Abstract:In this paper, the effect of VOD refining super-low-carbon stainless steel processing parameter of molten steel initial element, the temperature and vacuum level of oxygen jetting to the temperature of stop oxygen jetting are studied systematically. The conclusions are as follows : The molten steel temperature rise after oxygen jetting mainly depends on the quantity of heat transfer and distribution, and is not only the quantity of heat producing. The initial elements don't effect on the temperature after oxygen jetting. The molten steel temperature after oxygen jetting increases with the oxygen jetting temperature at the same vacuum level. A lower vacuum level also leads to higher molten steel temperature rise after oxygen jetting. The mainly metallographic structure of steel by VOD refining furnace treatment is strong tenacity board strip martensite organization.

Abstract:With the blowout demand of high-end military metallurgical materials, the implementation of the national "double carbon" strategy, the industrial upgrading of the domestic traditional metallurgical industry, vacuum induction smelting equipment has been favored which tends to be larger and larger.The process of "one furnace for multiple purposes, one machine for multiple heats" is quite popular in China, especially the large tonnage vacuum induction melting furnace, which is used to improve equipment utilization or reduce production and operation costs. The overall design of large-scale vacuum induction melting equipment and its related technology in special metallurgy field have been described in detail, while the development trend of large-scale vacuum induction melting equipment technology has been analyzed.

Abstract:An effective melting technique of carbon deoxidization of VIM was discussed in this article. Superalloys Inconel 718, M17F and iron were chosed as the testing materials. Applying thermodynamic stable CaO refractory as the melting crucible and increasing refining temperature, the carbon deoxidization thermodynamic and kinetic conditions were strengthened. For the end materials, which were melted with the calcia refining process, oxygen content of alloy 718 was decreased from 0.0025% to 0.0006%; M17F from 0.0025% to 0.0009%i iron from 0.0055% to 0.0025%. High oxygen purity metal materials were obtained in these new developed refining process by effective carbon deoxidation.
A mathematical model for dehydrogenation of molten steel in the Vacuum degasser

Abstract:This paper presents a mathematical model of VD dehydrogenation aimed at predicting hydrogen removal during the VD vacuum refining process and investigating the effect of controllable parameters on the dehydrogenation process. Taking into account the behavior of argon bubbles during their uplifting, the model considers that the dehydrogenation reaction occurs at three sites, the surface of the Ar bubbles, the bath surface of the molten steel, and the bulk steel. The calculated results are in good agreement with the industrial production data. The hydrogen content of the molten steel during VD dehydrogenation is observed to vary as an inversely proportional function with the vacuum holding time, decreasing rapidly in the early stage and slowing down in the later stage. Using the model, the contribution of different reaction sites to the dehydrogenation process was investigated. It was found that the internal spontaneous nucleation of the molten steel dominated the dehydrogenation process at the beginning. Then, the internal spontaneous nucleation gradually weakened to disappear as the hydrogen content of the molten steel decreased, followed by the dominance of dehydrogenation on the surface of the Ar bubble. The model also investigated the effect of vacuum pressure and argon flow rate on the VD dehydrogenation process. It was found that the vacuum pressure significantly influenced the dehydrogenation rate on the Ar bubble surface and the bath surface mainly by affecting the equilibrium hydrogen concentration in the gas phase and by influencing the critical nucleation depth, which affected the internal spontaneous dehydrogenation. Moreover, the increase of the argon flow rate not only increases the reaction area of the Ar bubble but also the reaction area at the activation zone on the bath surface. Additionally, the increase of the initial hydrogen content in the molten steel significantly promotes the spontaneous dehydrogenation of the internal nucleation in the bulk steel.

Abstract:The EAF tap contents(%) (C 0.7～0.90; Mn,Si 0.20～0.30; Al 0.010～0.020)and tap temperature (1660～1680℃) are designed to supply sufficient thermal energy for VOD refining welding rod steel. The process of charging with 50% hot metal and oxidation method can effectively dilute trace elements(As,Cu,P,Cr,V) and the acid slag formed in the process of VOD refining is beneficial to the controlling of element contents (C,O,N,Al,Si,Mn). The welding rod steel with the process of EAF+VOD refining can meet the requirement of standard and the quality level is equal to that of the same kind abroad.

Abstract:In this study, the effect of adding different contents of yttrium (Y) during vacuum induction melting in Al2O3 and Y2O3 crucibles on the purification of DD5 alloys was investigated. The results show that the Y2O3 crucible exhibited great crucible stability and an excellent desulfurization effect when melting a Y-containing DD5 alloy. The S content of the alloy was reduced from 5.03 ppm to 1.36 ppm with the addition of 0.50 wt.% Y. Element Y combined with free S in the melt to form the YS phase, which was removed from the condensate shell and slag during the vacuum induction melting (VIM) process. Meanwhile, when the alloy was melted in the Y2O3 crucible with 0.50 wt.% Y addition, there was a reduction in S content from 2.77 ppm to 1.36 ppm compared to the Al2O3 crucible. Additionally, the loss of Y decreased from 0.12 wt.% to 0.05 wt.%.

Abstract:A novel high-efficiency industrialized clean production technology based on multi-stage gradient batching and smelting was proposed for the production of high-quality ferrovanadium. The thermodynamic mechanism of aluminothermic reduction equilibrium, alloy settlement and raw material impurity distribution were confirmed, and a multi-stage double-gradient aluminum addition pattern (DG-ADP), the highly efficient separation of molten slag and alloy, and typical impurity control standards of raw materials were achieved on the basis of a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis with an electric auxiliary heating (SHS-EAH) process. The reduction efficiency, separation efficiency and the comprehensive utilization rate of the secondary resources were significantly improved, as the whole total vanadium (T.V) content in the industrially produced residue slag reduced from 2.34 wt.% to 0.60 wt.%, while the corresponding smelting yield increased from 93.7 wt.% to 98.7 wt.% and the aluminum consumption decreased from 510 kg·t−1 to 400 kg·t−1. The multi-stage DG-ADP process enabled the internal circulation of vanadium-bearing materials in the ferrovanadium smelting system, as well as the external circulation of iron and residue slag in the same system, and finally achieved the zero discharge of solid and liquid waste from the ferrovanadium production line, which provides a brand-new perspective for the cleaner production of ferrovanadium alloy.

Abstract:The influence of crucible and vacuum on oxygen content of CuCr25 prepared by vacuum induction melting (VIM) has been investigated. The experimental results show that the selection of crucible is very important. Alkaline oxide MgO crucible can result in increment of oxygen content and segregation of Cr in the CuCr25 alloys prepared. Neutral oxide Al2O3 crucible has no contribution to oxygen in CuCr25. The results also indicate that some kinds of deoxidant, such as Al, are further beneficial to deoxidization of the alloys.

Abstract:This study presents an effective and cleaner process with hydrogen-rich gases that uses oxidation roasting followed by gas-based direct reduction and melting separation to recovery iron, titanium, vanadium, and chromium from Hongge vanadium titanomagnetite (HVTM). The process parameters were systematically investigated and determined to be roasting temperature at 1200°C, roasting time of 15 min, reduction temperature at 1050°C, volume ratio of H2 to CO of 2.5, melting temperature at 1580°C, melting time of 30 min. Under optimized conditions, after melting separation, the recovery rates of iron, titanium, vanadium, and chromium were 97.9, 89.8, 96.7, and 97.8%, respectively. Furthermore, the melting separation mechanism was determined. The separated iron is a clean raw material for steelmaking and the Ti-rich slag can send for further processing to recover titanium. This study aims to provide a theoretical and technical basis for the comprehensive utilization of HVTM.

Industrial Experiment of Technique Optimization on IF Steel in RH Degasser

Abstract:The production process was tracked and investigated by aiming the problem on RH refining process in the high carbon content and instability in IF steel production at Panzhihua Steel Works.Industrial experiments of technique optimization on IF steel in RH degasser was done by controlling technique psocesses of converter end point and the oxygen activity of molten steel and the slag composition and the oxygenation in the ladle,as well as the time of decarburization so on.Industrial experiments showed that the fluctuation range of the carbon content was small when IF molten steel left from RH degasser.Adding the carbon powder,the oxygen activity of decarburization molten steel was controlled at 121×10-6～318×10-6 and its average value was 230.1×10-6,it was lower than original process about 120×10-6,purity of molten steel was improved.Adopting the slag-modifier of high alkalinity adjusted the composition in the ladle,the content of CaO increased and the content of Al2O3 decreased and slag sticking phenomenon of inserted ducts were mitigated obviously.

Abstract:Numerical modeling and industrial experiment were used to study the entire vacuum arc remelting (VAR) process of 660 mm GH4742 superalloy. In order to calculate the electromagnetic field, flow field, temperature field, and melt pool shape change throughout the entire VAR process, a 2D axisymmetric model with coupled multi-physical fields matching industry trials was constructed. The microstructure and elemental distribution conditions in the large-size GH4742 ingot were analyzed in combination with the industrial ingot dissection experiment, and the most likely locations of freckle defects were predicted. According to the research, the melt pool has two clockwise flow fields that are affected by buoyancy and Lorentz forces. The melt pool depth deepens gradually as melting proceeds, with a maximum melt pool depth of 0.32 m and a paste zone width of 0.16 m. Although the ingot's elemental distribution is largely consistent, there is microsegregation between the dendrites. Where the freckle is most likely to appear, at (0.322, 0.075), the Rayleigh has a great value of 1.1. For melt pool form and dendritic spacing throughout the entire melting process, the results of the industrial ingot dissection experiment and the simulation results show good agreement, proving the accuracy of the thermal history and solidification microstructure calculation for the entire melting process. Furthermore, the prospect of combining numerical simulation with a special material database for accurate defect prediction is proposed.

Abstract:On the basis of experimental research,optimal VIM technologies for producing ultra-high strength steel 32CrMnSi2Ni6MoV have been determined.They include: the selection of special raw materials,the control of melting rate,melting temperature and melting time.Owing to the application of the optimal VIM technologies,the nitrogen content in steel was less than 5×10-6and the oxygen content below 15×10-6,that guaranteed the steel to have good mechanical properties with Rm≥1 800 MPa and Aku≥70 J.
Influence of Vanadium Extraction Converter Process Optimization on Vanadium Extraction Effect

Abstract:In view of the problem of low bottom-blowing stirring intensity and easy blockage in the use of capillary bricks, the bottom-blowing gas supply element of circular seam was used. The results of water model experiments shows that the suitable bottom-blowing element was arranged on the circumference 0.45D away from the center of the furnace bottom (where D is the diameter of the converter bottom). The best blowing process parameters for vanadium extraction from hot metal were are obtained in different periods. The industrial test results shows that the average values of vanadium content in semi-steel and metallic iron content in vanadium slag were 0.033 wt% and 22.39 wt%, respectively, after process optimization, which were 0.003 wt% and 5.25 wt% lower than those before process optimization. The average value of vanadium oxide content in vanadium slag was 18.54 wt%, an increase of 0.2 wt% compared with the one before process optimization. This shows that after the process was optimized, the kinetic conditions of the molten bath were improved, and the vanadium oxide reaction was more sufficient. An additional 5210 tons of vanadium slag could be produced each year, and better economic benefits could be obtained.

Abstract:The production process from iron ore to steel can be divided into several stages, among which the processes of vanadium extraction and steelmaking are two key technological sections. The products of vanadium extraction are important strategic resources for modern industrial countries, and the remaining molten iron after vanadium extraction provides the material used in the subsequent steelmaking processes. In some mechanism models of vanadium extraction and the steelmaking process, the contact area of the reactions is considered to be constant in the empirical formula; furthermore, even the masses of the molten steel and slag are taken to be constants. This paper presents an important improvement to the existing models, in which the contact areas of the slag–metal interface and the emulsion system are considered to be non-constant. The improved model is simple and easy to analyze theoretically. Theoretical analysis of the model equations can be used to explain the competitive oxidation between each element, as well as the oxygen conservation of the system. The numerical simulations are consistent with existing production data, showing that the mass fraction of vanadium can be reduced to the specified threshold after about 3.5 min of blowing, which provides an important reference for production control. Furthermore, it is shown that the model captures the “trapezoid” structure of the decarburization rate. This paper also considers the relationship between FeO and O, the numerical simulation partly reflecting the dependence between the concentrations of FeO and O. The improved model can be used to describe and predict the change of the molten steel and slag composition in the process of vanadium extraction, which provides a mathematical foundation for the automatic control of the vanadium extraction process.
