Abstract:Foreshock transients are ion kinetic structures in the ion foreshock. Due to their dynamic pressure perturbations, they can disturb the bow shock and magnetosphere-ionosphere system. They can also accelerate particles contributing to shock acceleration. However, it is still unclear how exactly they form. Recent particle-in-cell simulations point out the important role of electric field and Hall current in the formation process. To further examine this, we use data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission to apply case studies on two small (1000-2000 km) foreshock transient events that just started to form. In event 1 where MMS were in a tetrahedral formation, we show that the current density configuration, which determined the magnetic field profile, was mainly driven by Hall currents generated by demagnetized foreshock ions. The resulting time variation of the magnetic field induced electric field that drove cold plasma moving outward with magnetic field lines. In event 2 where MMS were in a string-of-pearls formation, we analyze the evolution of field and plasma parameters. We show that the magnetic flux and mass flux were transported outward from the core resulting in the steepening of the boundary. The steepened boundary, which trapped more foreshock ions and caused stronger demagnetization of foreshock ions, nonlinearly further enhanced the Hall current. Based on our observations, we propose a physical formation process that the positive feedback of foreshock ions on the varying magnetic field caused by the foreshock ion Hall current enables an instability and the growth of the structure.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process of energy conversion in plasmas between electromagnetic fields and particles. Magnetic reconnection has been observed directly in a variety of plasmas in the solar wind and Earth's magnetosphere. Most recently, electron magnetic reconnection without ion coupling was observed for the first time in the turbulent magnetosheath and within the transition region of Earth's bow shock. In the ion foreshock upstream of Earth's bow shock, there may also be magnetic reconnection especially around foreshock transients that are very turbulent and dynamic. With observations from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission inside foreshock transients, we report two events of magnetic reconnection with and without a strong guide field, respectively. In both events, a super‐ion‐Alfvénic electron jet was observed within a current sheet with thickness less than or comparable to one ion inertial length. In both events, energy was converted from the magnetic field to electrons, manifested as an increase in electron temperature. Weak or no ion coupling was observed in either event. Results from particle‐in‐cell simulations of magnetic reconnection with and without a strong guide field are qualitatively consistent with observations. Our results imply that magnetic reconnection is another electron acceleration/heating process inside foreshock transients and could play an important role in shock dynamics.

Magnetosheath ion field-aligned anisotropy and implications for ion leakage to the foreshock

Abstract:The ion foreshock is highly dynamic, disturbing the bow shock and the magnetosphere-ionosphere system. To forecast foreshock-driven space weather effects, it is necessary to model foreshock ions as a function of upstream shock parameters. Case studies in the accompanying paper show that magnetosheath ions sometimes exhibit strong field-aligned anisotropy towards the upstream direction, which may be responsible for enhancing magnetosheath leakage and therefore foreshock ion density. To understand the conditions leading to such an anisotropy and the potential for enhanced leakage, we perform case studies and a statistical study of magnetosheath and foreshock region data surrounding ~500 THEMIS bow shock crossings. We quantify the anisotropy using the heat flux along the field-aligned direction. We show that the strong field-aligned heat flux persists across the entire magnetosheath from the magnetopause to the bow shock. Ion distribution functions reveal that the strong heat flux is caused by a secondary thermal population. We find that stronger anisotropy events exhibit heat flux preferentially towards the upstream direction near the bow shock and occur under larger IMF strength and larger solar wind dynamic pressure and/or energy flux. Additionally, we show that near the bow shock, magnetosheath leakage is a significant contributor to foreshock ions, and through enhancing the leakage the magnetosheath ion anisotropy can modulate the foreshock ion velocity and density. Our results imply that likely due to field line draping and compression against the magnetopause that leads to a directional mirror force, modeling the foreshock ions necessitates a more global accounting of downstream conditions.

Abstract:Although foreshock transients can generate strong magnetospheric Pc5 ULF waves, whether they can modulate the energy of magnetospheric ions is still poorly understood. In this paper, we analyze the strong magnetospheric ion energy modulations in a foreshock transient event on 30 October 2008, based on the magnetospheric observations by THEMIS A and D in the prenoon sector. ULF wave‐induced drift accelerated the cold ions up to ∼ 10 keV and the enhanced ion fluxes have wave‐like patterns. There is another portion of enhanced ion fluxes from ∼0.8 to ∼10 keV but with strong energy dispersions in this event. By comparing the observations and the theoretical prediction, we for the first time found that the drift‐bounce resonances played a major role in modulating the energy of those ions with energy dispersions, during the interactions between the ions and the foreshock transient‐driven Pc5 ULF wave with growing and damping effects.

Abstract:Foreshock transients such as hot flow anomalies (HFAs) are frequently observed in the dayside foreshock. They can disturb the local bow shock, magnetopause, and consequently the magnetosphere‐ionosphere system through dynamic pressure perturbations. Recent multipoint observations found that such perturbations can even propagate from the dayside to the midtail. However, whether the drivers of such perturbations, foreshock transients, persist in the midtail foreshock has not been observed. Thus, it is unclear whether the observed nightside magnetosheath/magnetopause perturbations are traveling waves or continuously driven by a propagating foreshock transient. Using two Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of the Moon's Interaction with the Sun (ARTEMIS) spacecraft, we report direct observational evidence of foreshock transients in the midtail foreshock. We present a case study showing an elongated mature HFA propagating with its driver discontinuity from TH‐C (X ~ −43 RE) to TH‐B (X ~ −48 RE). Our results confirm that foreshock transients disturb not only the dayside bow shock but also the nightside bow shock while propagating tailward. One hundred nine midtail foreshock transients were observed by ARTEMIS with a dynamic pressure decrease by more than 50% We present a case study of a mature HFA propagating in the midtail foreshock, which may have survived for ~30 min It could be common for foreshock transients to continuously disturb the local nightside bow shock while propagating tailward

Abstract:On 26 February 2008, the THEMIS satellites observed two substorms that occurred at about 0405 and 0455 UT. Angelopoulos et al. (2008) made a comprehensive study of the second event. In this paper we display detailed features of the two substorms with emphasis on the first. In both substorms, a distinct auroral intensification occurred during the earliest stage of onset, about 1 to 2 min after midtail reconnection began. This initial intensification was weak and localized and thus had the signatures of a pseudobreakup. In both substorms, a second, major intensification occurred next in the substorm onset sequence, followed by rapid and extensive poleward expansion. This second intensification had the features of the major expansion onset and was nearly coincident with observations of earthward flows and magnetic dipolarization in the near‐Earth tail. During the growth phase of the two substorms, open magnetic flux accumulated in the polar cap; in the expansion/recovery phase the polar cap open flux was quickly reduced. These observations are in agreement with the assertion that tail reconnection initiates the initial pseudobreakup and the ensuing major expansion and releases and transports energy to eventually cause near‐Earth dipolarization and the expansion phase onset of these two substorms.
Dynamic Motion of the Bow Shock and the Magnetopause Observed by Themis Spacecraft

Abstract:We present an observational study of the dynamic motion of the bow shock and the magnetopause and suggest that the dynamic motion of the bow shock is due to the interaction of an interplanetary shock with the Earth's bow shock. THEMIS B spacecraft crossed the magnetopause, a discontinuity and the bow shock successively in 5 min during its outbound journey on 10 July 2007. Following THEMIS B, THEMIS C, D, E and A consecutively crossed the magnetopause and the discontinuity but not the bow shock. Timing analysis shows that the magnetopause and the discontinuity were moving earthward with speeds of ∼47 km/s and ∼90 km/s, respectively. There is a trend that the discontinuity decelerates as it propagates toward the magnetopause. We suggest that the dynamic motion and the discontinuity are results of the interaction of a weak (MA = 1.4) interplanetary shock with the Earth's bow shock. After the interaction, the transmitted interplanetary shock took the form of a discontinuity where total magnetic field and density increase and the temperature decreases. The rotation of the magnetic field across this discontinuity was similar to that of the interplanetary shock. The expected fast shock ahead of the discontinuity for shock‐shock interaction was not observed.

Spatial Distribution of Magnetic Fluctuation Power with Period 40 to 600s in the Magnetosphere Observed by Themis

Abstract:Ultralow frequency (ULF) fluctuations are ubiquitous in the magnetosphere and have significant influence on the energetic particle transport. We use Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) data to give the spatial distribution of the Pi2/Pc4 and Pc5 band magnetic fluctuation amplitude near the magnetic equator in the magnetosphere. Statistical results can be summarized as follows: (1) strong ULF fluctuations are common in the magnetotail plasma sheet; the amplitude of all three components of magnetic fluctuations decreases with decreasing radial distance; (2) during periods of high AE index, fluctuations can propagate toward the Earth as far as the data cutoff in the nightside of the magnetosphere, and the amplitude of magnetic fluctuations is clearly stronger near the dusk sector of the synchronous orbit than that near the dawn sector, suggesting that the substorm particle injection has significant contribution to these fluctuations; (3) intense compressional Pc5 band magnetic fluctuations are a persistent feature near two flanks of the magnetosphere. Clear peaks of the compressional Pi2/Pc4 band magnetic fluctuation power near two flanks can be found during periods of fast solar wind, while the power of compressional Pi2/Pc4 band fluctuations is weak when the solar wind is slow. (4) Solar wind dynamic pressure and its variations can globally affect the ULF fluctuation power in the magnetosphere. Magnetic fluctuations near the noonside can penetrate from the magnetopause to the synchronous orbit or inner when solar wind pressure variations are large.

THEMIS Observations of Earthward Convected Flux Ropes Triggering Field Dipolarization/substorm Expansion and Associated Particle Energization

Abstract:We investigated a number of substorm events during major conjunctions of the THEMIS spacecraft for the tail seasons of the mission. We present simultaneous observations from various instruments onboard the THEMIS spacecraft during the events. We focus particularly on events when at least one of the THEMIS spacecraft is adjacent to the neutral sheet where convectional plasma flows are observed. The events demonstrate clear dipolarization signatures accompanied by high-speed earthward plasma flows and intense wave activity. We present evidence that flux ropes are embedded within the high-speed earthward convective plasma sheet flows. This fact has important implications since the leading edge of the flux rope having south polarity can impulsively merge with the north polarity field of the stretched magnetotail leading to mutual erosion of both magnetic structures. The merging of the vertically oriented oppositely-directed field lines can lead to local cross-tail current reduction and flux rope dissipation. These observations are very important in explaining the mechanism triggering near-Earth dipolarization and particle acceleration to supra-thermal energies, since they can be associated with non-adiabatic conditions and breakdown of the frozen-in condition in the near-Earth magnetotail similar to that taking place during magnetic reconnection in the mid-tail.
