Abstract:Cyclotomic polynomials are basic objects in Number Theory. Their properties depend on the number of distinct primes that intervene in the factorization of their order, and the binary case is thus the first nontrivial case. This paper sees the vector of coefficients of the polynomial as a word on a ternary alphabet $\{-1,0 ,+1\}$. It designs an efficient algorithm that computes a compact representation of this word. This algorithm is of linear time with respect to the size of the output, and, thus, optimal. This approach allows to recover known properties of coefficients of binary cyclotomic polynomials, and extends to the case of polynomials associated with numerical semi-groups of dimension 2.

Abstract:There are many different algebraic, geometric and combinatorial objects that one can attach to a complex polynomial with distinct roots. In this article we introduce a new object that encodes many of the existing objects that have previously appeared in the literature. Concretely, for every complex polynomial $p$ with $d$ distinct roots and degree at least 2, we produce a canonical compact planar 2-complex that is a compact metric version of a tiled phase diagram. It has a locally CAT(0) metric that is locally Euclidean away from a finite set of interior points indexed by the critical points of $p$, and each of its 2-cells is a metric rectangle. From this planar rectangular 2-complex one can use metric graphs known as metric cacti and metric banyans to read off several pieces of combinatorial data: a chain in the partition lattice, a cyclic factorization of a d-cycle, a real noncrossing partition (also known as a primitive d-major), and the monodromy permutations for the polynomial. This article is the first in a series.

Abstract:Using the cyclotomic identity we compute sums over d-tuples of monic polynomials in F_q[x] weighted by the multiplicity of their irreducible factors. As consequences we determine explicit expressions for the number of d-tuples of polynomials such that their greatest common divisor is rth power free. We also compute the number of monic polynomials where the multiplicity of each irreducible factor belongs to the monoid generated by two relatively prime integers.

Abstract:It is conjectured that all separable polynomials with integers coefficients, satisfying some local conditions, take infinitely many square free values on integer arguments. But not a single polynomial of degree greater than $3$ is proven to exhibit this property. In this article, we propose a method to show that ``cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_{\ell}(X)$ take square free values with positive proportion". Following this method, conditionally, we do prove the Square-free conjecture for all cyclotomic polynomials. The method is applicable to some other class of polynomials as well. Moreover we show that the method readily succeeds for quadratic polynomials to give unconditional result. In the appendix, we give an elementary proof of the square-free conjecture for cyclotomic polynomials under abc conjecture.

Abstract:We promote the recent research by Akiyama and Kaneko on the higher-order derivative values $\Phi_n^{(k)}(1)$ of the cyclotomic polynomials. This article focuses on Lehmer's explicit formula of $\Phi_n^{(k)}(1)/\Phi_n(1)$ as a polynomial of the Euler and Jordan totient functions over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then we prove Akiyama-Kaneko's conjecture that the polynomials have a specific simple factor.

Abstract:The factorizations of the polynomial $X^n-1$ and the cyclotomic polynomial $\Phi_n$ over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ have been studied for a very long time. Explicit factorizations have been given for the case that $\mathrm{rad}(n)\mid q^w-1$ where $w=1$, $w$ is prime or $w$ is the product of two primes. For arbitrary $a\in \mathbb F_q^\ast$ the factorization of the polynomial $X^n-a$ is needed for the construction of constacyclic codes. Its factorization has been determined for the case $\mathrm{rad}(n)\mid q-1$ and for the case that there exist at most three distinct prime factors of $n$ and $\mathrm{rad}(n)\mid q^w-1$ for a prime $w$. Both polynomials $X^n-1$ and $X^n-a$ are compositions of the form $f(X^n)$ for a monic irreducible polynomial $f\in \mathbb F_q[X]$. The factorization of the composition $f(X^n)$ is known for the case $\gcd(n, \mathrm{ord}(f)\cdot \mathrm{deg}(f))=1$ and $\mathrm{rad}(n)\mid q^w-1$ for $w=1$ or $w$ prime. However, there does not exist a closed formula for the explicit factorization of either $X^n-1$, the cyclotomic polynomial $\Phi_n$, the binomial $X^n-a$ or the composition $f(X^n)$. Without loss of generality we can assume that $\gcd(n,q)=1$. Our main theorem, Theorem 18, is a closed formula for the factorization of $X^n-a$ over $\mathbb F_q$ for any $a\in \mathbb F_q^\ast$ and any positive integer $n$ such that $\gcd(n,q)=1$. From our main theorem we derive one closed formula each for the factorization of $X^n-1$ and of the $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial $\Phi_n$ for any positive integer $n$ such that $\gcd(n,q)=1$ (Theorem 2.5 and Theorem 2.6). Furthermore, our main theorem yields a closed formula for the factorization of the composition $f(X^n)$ for any irreducible polynomial $f\in \mathbb F_q[X]$, $f\neq X$, and any positive integer $n$ such that $\gcd(n,q)=1$ (Theorem 27).

Abstract:Let $\vartheta(m)$ is number of nonzero coefficients in the $m$-th cyclotomic polynomial. For real $\gamma > 0$ and $x \ge 2$ we define $$H_{\gamma}(x)=\#\left\{m:~m=pq \le x, \ p<q\text{ primes }, \ \vartheta(m)\le m^{1/2+\gamma}\right\}, $$ and show that for any fixed $\eta> 0$, uniformly over $\gamma$ with $$9/20+\eta \le \gamma\le 1/2 -\eta, $$ we have an asymptotic formula $$ H_{\gamma}(x)\sim C(\gamma)x^{1/2+\gamma}/ \log x, \qquad x \to \infty, $$ where $C(\gamma)> 0$ is an explicit constant depending only on $\gamma$. This extends the previous result of {É}.~Fouvry (2013), which has $12/25$ instead of $9/20$.

Abstract:It is customary to define a cyclotomic polynomial Φn(x) to be ternary if n is the product of three distinct primes, p<q<r. Let A(n) be the largest absolute value of a coefficient of Φn(x) and M(p) be the maximum of A(pqr). In 1968, Sister Marion Beiter (1968, 1971) [3], [4] conjectured that A(pqr)≤p+12. In 2008, Yves Gallot and Pieter Moree (2009) [6] showed that the conjecture is false for every p≥11, and they proposed the Corrected Beiter conjecture: M(p)≤23p. Here we will give a sufficient condition for the Corrected Beiter conjecture and prove it when p=7.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a formula for the proper class number of a binary quadratic polynomial assuming that the conductor ideal is sufficiently divisible at dyadic places. This allows us to study the growth of the proper class numbers of totally positive binary quadratic polynomials. As an application, we prove finiteness results on totally positive binary quadratic polynomials with a fixed quadratic part and a fixed proper class number.

Abstract:Polynomials are special examples of (effective) zero-cycles on varieties. We prove a Prime Number Theorem and an Erdos-Kac theorem for zero-cycles on a smooth variety over finite fields, generalizing previous results about polynomials over finite fields. In this way, the well-known analogy between integers and polynomials is extended to zero-cycles. We also show that the Frobenius automorphism on a random zero-cycle of degree $n$ tends to be equidistributed as $n\to\infty$.

Abstract:The theory of cyclotomy dates back to Gauss and has a number of applications in combinatorics, coding theory, and cryptography. Cyclotomy over a residue class ring ${\BBZ}_{v}$ can be divided into classical cyclotomy or generalized cyclotomy, depending on $v$ prime or composite. In this paper, we introduce a generalized cyclotomy of order $d$ over ${\BBZ}_{p_{1}^{e_{1}}p_{2}^{e_{2}},\ldots, p_{n}^{e_{n}}}$, which includes Whiteman's and Ding-Helleseth's generalized cyclotomy as special cases. Here, $p_{1},p_{2},\ldots,p_{n}$ are pairwise distinct odd primes satisfying $d\vert (p_{i}-1)$ for all $1\leq i\leq n$ and $e_{1},e_{2},\ldots,e_{n}$ are positive integers. We derive some basic properties of the corresponding cyclotomic numbers and obtain a general formula to compute them via classical cyclotomic numbers. As applications, we completely solve an open problem and a conjecture on Whiteman's generalized cyclotomy of order four over ${\BBZ}_{p_{1}p_{2}}$. Besides, we also construct an infinite series of near-optimal codebooks over ${\BBZ}_{p_{1}p_{2}}$, as well as some infinite series of asymptotically optimal difference systems of sets over ${\BBZ}_{p_{1}^{e_{1}}p_{2}^{e_{2}},\ldots,p_{n}^{e_{n}}}$.

Abstract:We study the explicit factorization of 2 n r -th cyclotomic polynomials over finite field 𝔽_q where q , r are odd with ( r , q ) = 1. We show that all irreducible factors of 2 n r -th cyclotomic polynomials can be obtained easily from irreducible factors of cyclotomic polynomials of small orders. In particular, we obtain the explicit factorization of 2 n 5-th cyclotomic polynomials over finite fields and construct several classes of irreducible polynomials of degree 2 n –2 with fewer than 5 terms.
Fast polynomial arithmetic in homomorphic encryption with cyclo-multiquadratic fields

Abstract:We discuss the advantages and limitations of cyclotomic fields to have fast polynomial arithmetic within homomorphic encryption, and show how these limitations can be overcome by replacing cyclotomic fields by a family that we refer to as cyclo-multiquadratic. This family is of particular interest due to its arithmetic efficiency properties and to the fact that the Polynomial Learning with Errors (PLWE) and Ring Learning with Errors (RLWE) problems are equivalent for it. Likewise, we provide exact expressions for the condition number for any cyclotomic field, but under what we call the twisted power basis. As a tool for our result, we obtain refined polynomial upper bounds for the condition number of cyclotomic fields with up to 6 different primes dividing the conductor. From a more practical side, we also show that for this family, swapping between NTT and coefficient representations can be achieved at least twice faster than for the usual cyclotomic family.

Abstract:We observe that the vocabulary used to construct the "answer" to problems in computer algebra can have a dramatic effect on the computational complexity of solving that problem. We recall a formalization of this observation and explain the classic example of sparse polynomial arithmetic. For this case, we show that it is possible to extend the vocabulary so as reap the benefits of conciseness whilst avoiding the obvious pitfall of repeating the problem statement as the "solution". It is possible to extend the vocabulary either by irreducible cyclotomics or by $x^n-1$: we look at the options and suggest that the pragmatist might opt for both.

Generalized cyclotomic polynomials associated with regular systems of divisors and arbitrary sets of positive integers

Abstract:We introduce and study the generalized cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_{A,S,n}(x)$ associated with a regular system $A$ of divisors and an arbitrary set $S$ of positive integers. We show that all of these polynomials have integer coefficients, they can be expressed as the product of certain classical cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_d(x)$ with $d\mid n$, and enjoy many other properties which are similar to the classical and unitary cases. We also point out some related Menon-type identities. One of them seems to be new even for the cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_n(x)$.

Beyond uniform cyclotomy

Abstract:Cyclotomy, the study of cyclotomic classes and cyclotomic numbers, is an area of number theory first studied by Gauss. It has natural applications in discrete mathematics and information theory. Despite this long history, there are significant limitations to what is known explicitly about cyclotomic numbers, which limits the use of cyclotomy in applications. The main explicit tool available is that of uniform cyclotomy, introduced by Baumert, Mills and Ward in 1982. In this paper, we present an extension of uniform cyclotomy which gives a direct method for evaluating all cyclotomic numbers over $GF(q^n)$ of order dividing $(q^n-1)/(q-1)$, for any prime power $q$ and $n \geq 2$, which does not use character theory nor direct calculation in the field. This allows the straightforward evaluation of many cyclotomic numbers for which other methods are unknown or impractical. Our methods exploit connections between cyclotomy, Singer difference sets and finite geometry.

Abstract:Zeta functions of periodic cubical lattices are explicitly derived by computing all the eigenvalues of the adjacency operators and their characteristic polynomials. We introduce cyclotomic-like polynomials to give factorization of the zeta function in terms of them and count the number of orbits of the Galois action associated with each cyclotomic-like polynomial to obtain its further factorization. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for such a polynomial to be irreducible and discuss its irreducibility from this point of view.
