Abstract:Mersenne primes and Fermat primes may be thought of as primes of the form $\Phi_m(2)$, where $\Phi_m(x)$ is the $m$th cyclotomic polynomial. This paper discusses the more general problem of primes and composites of this form.

Abstract: It is well-known that translation schemes on prime number of vertices are exactly the cyclotomic schemes. In this current paper, we show that there are no nonsymmetric primitive translation schemes on prime square vertices with at most four classes. On the other hand, we find new non-symmetric four- and five-class association schemes from cyclotomy as fission schemes of certain symmetric three-class schemes. Moreover, we provide an affirmative answer to the following question raised by Song \cite{song_2}: Are there any other two-class primitive schemes that admit symmetrizable fission schemes besides the cyclotomic scheme of index 2 for $q \equiv5 \pmod{8}$? To be more specific, we show that a certain two-class primitive scheme in the finite field $\F_{37^3}$ constructed by Feng and Xiang in \cite{fx} admits a four-class fission scheme. This fission scheme is realized as a fusion scheme of the cyclotomic scheme of index 28.

Abstract:It is well-known that translation schemes of prime order are exactly the cyclotomic schemes. In this paper, we show that there do not exist any two-, three-, or four-class nonsymmetric primitive translation schemes of prime square order. On the other hand, we find new nonsymmetric four- and five-class association schemes from cyclotomy as fission schemes of certain symmetric three-class association schemes. Moreover, we provide an affirmative answer to the following question raised by Song (J Algebr Comb 5:47–55, 1996): are there any other two-class primitive association schemes that admit symmetrizable fission schemes besides the cyclotomic scheme of index 2 for $q \equiv 5 \hbox { (mod 8)}$? To be more specific, we show that a certain two-class primitive association scheme in the finite field ${\mathbb F}_{37^3}$ constructed by Feng and Xiang (J Comb Theory Ser A 119:245–256, 2012) admits a four-class fission scheme. This fission scheme is realized as a fusion scheme of the cyclotomic scheme of index 28.

Abstract:Let r = pλ, K = Fr(t), f be an irreducible monic polynomial in Fr[t], K(Λf) the cyclotomic function field with conductor f, hf+ the class number of the maximal “real” subfield of K(Λf), hf− the relative class number of K(Λf). The main results in this note are that (1) for each r = pλ > 2 there exist infinitely many irreducible monic polynomials f ∈ Fr[t] with p|hf−; (2) for each r = pλ there exist infinitely many irreducible monic polynomials f ∈ Fr[t] with p|hf+.

Abstract:For a fixed prime p, the maximum coefficient (in absolute value) M(p) of the cyclotomic polynomial Φpqr(x), where r and q are free primes satisfying r>q>p exists. Sister Beiter conjectured in 1968 that M(p)≤(p+1)/2. In 2009 Gallot and Moree showed that M(p)≥2p(1−ϵ)/3 for every p sufficiently large. In this article Kloosterman sums (‘cloister man sums’) and other tools from the distribution of modular inverses are applied to quantify the abundancy of counter-examples to Sister Beiter’s conjecture and sharpen the above lower bound for M(p).

Abstract:It is customary to define a cyclotomic polynomial Φn(x) to be ternary if n is the product of three distinct primes, p<q<r. Let A(n) be the largest absolute value of a coefficient of Φn(x) and M(p) be the maximum of A(pqr). In 1968, Sister Marion Beiter (1968, 1971) [3], [4] conjectured that A(pqr)≤p+12. In 2008, Yves Gallot and Pieter Moree (2009) [6] showed that the conjecture is false for every p≥11, and they proposed the Corrected Beiter conjecture: M(p)≤23p. Here we will give a sufficient condition for the Corrected Beiter conjecture and prove it when p=7.

Abstract:The only (unitary) perfect polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_2$ that are products of $x$, $x+1$ and Mersenne primes are precisely the nine (resp. nine "classes") known ones. This follows from a new result about the factorization of $M^{2h+1} +1$, for a Mersenne prime $M$ and for a positive integer $h$. Other consequences of such a factorization are new results about odd perfect polynomials.

Abstract:Using the cyclotomic identity we compute sums over d-tuples of monic polynomials in F_q[x] weighted by the multiplicity of their irreducible factors. As consequences we determine explicit expressions for the number of d-tuples of polynomials such that their greatest common divisor is rth power free. We also compute the number of monic polynomials where the multiplicity of each irreducible factor belongs to the monoid generated by two relatively prime integers.

Abstract:This paper provides two characterizations of the primitive roots of unity in quadratic cyclotomic extensions over arbitrary fields. Firstly, we introduce a mapping from $\mathbb{N}$ to $\mathbb{N}$ crucial for describing these roots, closely tied to their order over the field. Secondly, for any prime $p$, we determine the maximal natural number $n$ such that $\zeta_{p^n}$ defines a quadratic cyclotomic extension over the field $F$. This characterization is uniform across different fields, regardless of their characteristic, and applies to both odd and even primes.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of order $q$ and $F=\mathbb{F}_q(x)$ the rational function field. In this paper, we give a characterization of the cyclotomic function fields $F(\Lambda_M)$ with modulus $M$, where $M \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is a monic and irreducible polynomial of degree two. We also provide the full automorphism group of $F(\Lambda_M)$ in odd characteristic, extending results of \cite{MXY2016} where the automorphism group of $F(\Lambda_M)$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ was computed.

Beyond uniform cyclotomy

Abstract:Cyclotomy, the study of cyclotomic classes and cyclotomic numbers, is an area of number theory first studied by Gauss. It has natural applications in discrete mathematics and information theory. Despite this long history, there are significant limitations to what is known explicitly about cyclotomic numbers, which limits the use of cyclotomy in applications. The main explicit tool available is that of uniform cyclotomy, introduced by Baumert, Mills and Ward in 1982. In this paper, we present an extension of uniform cyclotomy which gives a direct method for evaluating all cyclotomic numbers over $GF(q^n)$ of order dividing $(q^n-1)/(q-1)$, for any prime power $q$ and $n \geq 2$, which does not use character theory nor direct calculation in the field. This allows the straightforward evaluation of many cyclotomic numbers for which other methods are unknown or impractical. Our methods exploit connections between cyclotomy, Singer difference sets and finite geometry.

Abstract:When investigating the distribution of the Euler totient function, one encounters sets of primes P where if p is in P then r is in P for all r|(p-1). While it is easy to construct finite sets of such primes, the only infinite set known is the set of all primes. We translate this problem into the function field setting and construct an infinite such set in F_p[x] whenever p is equivalent to 2 or 5 modulo 9.

Abstract:We show that there are infinitely many primes of the form $X^2+(Y^2+1)^2$ and $X^2+(Y^3+Z^3)^2$. This extends the work of Friedlander and Iwaniec showing that there are infinitely many primes of the form $X^2+Y^4$. More precisely, Friedlander and Iwaniec obtained an asymptotic formula for the number of primes of this form. For the sequences $X^2+(Y^2+1)^2$ and $X^2+(Y^3+Z^3)^2$ we establish Type II information that is too narrow for an aysmptotic formula, but we can use Harman's sieve method to produce a lower bound of the correct order of magnitude for primes of form $X^2+(Y^2+1)^2$ and $X^2+(Y^3+Z^3)^2$. Estimating the Type II sums is reduced to a counting problem which is solved by using the Weil bound, where the arithmetic input is quite different from the work of Friedlander and Iwaniec for $X^2+Y^4$. We also show that there are infinitely many primes $p=X^2+Y^2$ where $Y$ is represented by an incomplete norm form of degree $k$ with $k-1$ variables. For this we require a Deligne-type bound for correlations of hyper-Kloosterman sums.

Abstract:Cyclotomic polynomials are basic objects in Number Theory. Their properties depend on the number of distinct primes that intervene in the factorization of their order, and the binary case is thus the first nontrivial case. This paper sees the vector of coefficients of the polynomial as a word on a ternary alphabet $\{-1,0 ,+1\}$. It designs an efficient algorithm that computes a compact representation of this word. This algorithm is of linear time with respect to the size of the output, and, thus, optimal. This approach allows to recover known properties of coefficients of binary cyclotomic polynomials, and extends to the case of polynomials associated with numerical semi-groups of dimension 2.

Abstract:A well-known conjecture, often attributed to Serre, asserts that any motive over any number field has infinitely many ordinary reductions (in the sense that the Newton polygon coincides with the Hodge polygon). In the case of Hilbert modular cuspforms $f$ of parallel weight $(2, \cdots , 2)$, we show how to produce more ordinary primes by using the Sato-Tate equidistribution and combining it with the Galois theory of the Hecke field. Under the assumption of stronger forms of Sato-Tate equidistribution, we get stronger (but conditional) results. In the case of higher weights, we formulate the ordinariness conjecture for submotives of the intersection cohomology of proper algebraic varieties with motivic coefficients, and verify it for the motives whose $l$-adic Galois realisations are abelian on a finite index subgroup. We get some results for Hilbert cuspforms of weight $(3, \cdots , 3)$, weaker than those for $(2, \cdots , 2)$.
