Abstract:Let $B/F$ be a quaternion algebra over a totally real number field. We give an explicit formula for heights of special points on the quaternionic Shimura variety associated with $B$ in terms of Faltings heights of CM abelian varieties. Special points correspond to CM fields $E$ and partial CM-types $\phi \subset \mathrm{Hom}(E, \mathbb{C})$. We then show that our height is compatible with the canonical height of a partial CM-type defined by Pila, Shankar, and Tsimerman. This gives another proof that the height of a partial CM-type is bounded subpolynomially in terms of the discriminant of $E$.

Abstract:We consider the problem of explicitly computing Beilinson--Bloch heights of homologically trivial cycles on varieties defined over number fields. Recent results have established a congruence, up to the rational span of logarithms of primes, between the height of certain limit mixed Hodge structures and certain Beilinson--Bloch heights obtained from odd-dimensional hypersurfaces with a node. This congruence suggests a new method to compute Beilinson--Bloch heights. Here we explain how to compute the relevant limit mixed Hodge structures in practice, then apply our computational method to a nodal quartic curve and a nodal cubic threefold. In both cases, we explain the nature of the primes occurring in the congruence.

Abstract:We promote the recent research by Akiyama and Kaneko on the higher-order derivative values $\Phi_n^{(k)}(1)$ of the cyclotomic polynomials. This article focuses on Lehmer's explicit formula of $\Phi_n^{(k)}(1)/\Phi_n(1)$ as a polynomial of the Euler and Jordan totient functions over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then we prove Akiyama-Kaneko's conjecture that the polynomials have a specific simple factor.

Heights of Drinfeld modular polynomials and Hecke images

Abstract:We obtain explicit upper and lower bounds on the size of the coefficients of the Drinfeld modular polynomials $\Phi_N$ for any monic $N\in\mathbb{F}_q[t]$. These polynomials vanish at pairs of $j$-invariants of Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$-modules of rank 2 linked by cyclic isogenies of degree $N$. The main term in both bounds is asymptotically optimal as $\mathrm{deg}(N)$ tends to infinity. We also obtain precise estimates on the Weil height and Taguchi height of Hecke images of Drinfeld modules of rank 2.

Algorithms for $p$-adic Heights on Hyperelliptic Curves of Arbitrary Reduction

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an algorithm for computing Coleman--Gross (and hence Nekovář) $p$-adic heights on hyperelliptic curves over number fields with arbitrary reduction type above $p$. This height is defined as a sum of local heights at each finite place and we use algorithms for Vologodsky integrals, developed by Katz and the second-named author, to compute the local heights above $p$. We also discuss an alternative method to compute these for odd degree genus 2 curves via $p$-adic sigma functions, via work of the first-named author. For both approaches one needs to choose a splitting of the Hodge filtration. A canonical choice for this is due to Blakestad in the case of an odd degree curve of genus $2$ that has semistable ordinary reduction at $p$. We provide an algorithm to compute Blakestad's splitting, which is conjecturally the unit root splitting for the action of Frobenius. We give several numerical examples, including the first worked quadratic Chabauty example in the literature for a curve with bad reduction.

A note on quadratic cyclotomic extensions

Abstract:This paper provides two characterizations of the primitive roots of unity in quadratic cyclotomic extensions over arbitrary fields. Firstly, we introduce a mapping from $\mathbb{N}$ to $\mathbb{N}$ crucial for describing these roots, closely tied to their order over the field. Secondly, for any prime $p$, we determine the maximal natural number $n$ such that $\zeta_{p^n}$ defines a quadratic cyclotomic extension over the field $F$. This characterization is uniform across different fields, regardless of their characteristic, and applies to both odd and even primes.

Abstract:Polynomials are special examples of (effective) zero-cycles on varieties. We prove a Prime Number Theorem and an Erdos-Kac theorem for zero-cycles on a smooth variety over finite fields, generalizing previous results about polynomials over finite fields. In this way, the well-known analogy between integers and polynomials is extended to zero-cycles. We also show that the Frobenius automorphism on a random zero-cycle of degree $n$ tends to be equidistributed as $n\to\infty$.

Abstract:Let K be a number field, X/K a curve, and f/X a family of endomorphisms of projective N-space. It follows from a result of Call and Silverman that the canonical height associated to the family f, evaluated along a section, differs from a Weil height on the base by little-o of a Weil height. In the case where f is a family with an invariant hyperplane, whose restriction to this invariant hyperplane is isotrivial, we improve this by showing that the canonical height along a section differs from a Weil height on the base by a bounded amount.

Abstract:The largest coefficient (in absolute value) of a cyclotomic polynomial $\Phi_n$ is called its height $A(n)$. In case $p$ is a fixed prime it turns out that as $q$ and $r$ range over all primes satisfying $p<q<r$, the height $A(pqr)$ assumes a maximum $M(p)$. In 1968, Sister Marion Beiter conjectured that $M(p)\leq (p+1)/2$. In 2009, this was disproved for every $p\ge 11$ by Yves Gallot and Pieter Moree. They proposed a Corrected Beiter Conjecture, namely $M(p)\leq 2p/3$. In 2009, Jia Zhao and Xianke Zhang posted on the arXiv what they thought to be a proof of this conjecture. Their work was never accepted for publication in a journal. However, in retrospect it turns out to be essentially correct, but rather sketchy at some points. Here we supply a lot more details. \par The bound $M(p)\le 2p/3$ allows us to improve some bounds of Bzdęga from 2010 for ternary cyclotomic coefficients. It also makes it possible to determine $M(p)$ exactly for three new primes $p$ and study the fine structure of $A(pqr)$ for them in greater detail.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to prove a formula expressing the modular height of a quaternionic Shimura curve over a totally real number field in terms of the logarithmic derivative of the Dedekind zeta function of the totally real number field. Our proof is based on the work of Yuan-Zhang-Zhang on the Gross-Zagier formula and the work of Yuan-Zhang on the averaged Colmez conjecture. All these works are in turn inspired by the Pioneering work of Gross-Zagier and some philosophies of Kudla's program.

Abstract:Several recent papers construct auxiliary polynomials to bound the Weil height of certain classes of algebraic numbers from below. Following these techniques, the author gave a general method for introducing auxiliary polynomials to problems involving the Weil height. The height appears as a solution to a certain extremal problem involving polynomials. We further generalize the above techniques to acquire both the projective height and the height on subspaces in the same way. We further obtain lower bounds on the heights of points on some subvarieties of $\mathbb P^{N-1}(\overline{\mathbb Q})$.

A naive p-adic height on the Jacobians of curves of genus 2

Abstract:Consider a genus 2 curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ given by an affine equation of the form $y^2 = f(x)$ for some polynomial $f$ of degree 5, and let $p$ be an odd prime. Extending work of Perrin-Riou for elliptic curves, we construct a naive $p$-adic height function on a finite index subgroup of the Jacobian $J$ of this curve, using the explicit embedding of $J$ in $\mathbb{P}^8$ and the associated formal group described by Grant. We use the naive height to construct a global height $h_p: J(\mathbb{Q}) \rightarrow \mathbb{Q}_p$ using a limit construction analogous to Tate's construction of the Néron-Tate height, and show that it is quadratic. We compare $h_p$ to a $p$-adic height constructed in a different way by Bianchi and show that they are equal.

Abstract:Given a family of products of elliptic curves over a rational curve over a number field $K$, we give a bound for the number of special fibers of height at most $B$ such that the two factors are isogenous. We prove an upper bound that depends on $K$, the family, and the height $B$. Moreover, if we slightly change the definition of the height of the parametrizing family, we prove a uniform bound that depends only on the degree of the family, $K$, and the height $B$.

Abstract:Under the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, any integer $n>1$ can be uniquely written as a product of prime powers $p^a$; factoring each exponent $a$ as a product of prime powers $q^b$, and so on, one will obtain what is called the tower factorization of $n$. Here, given an integer $n>1$, we study its height $h(n)$, that is, the number of "floors" in its tower factorization. In particular, given a fixed integer $k\geq 1$, we provide a formula for the density of the set of integers $n$ with $h(n)=k$. This allows us to estimate the number of floors that a positive integer will have on average. We also show that there exist arbitrarily long sequences of consecutive integers with arbitrarily large heights.

Abstract:C.J. Smyth was among the first to study the spectrum of the Weil height in the field of all totally real numbers, establishing both lower and upper bounds for the limit infimum of the height of all totally real integers and determining isolated values of the height. Later, Bombieri and Zannier established similar results for totally p-adic numbers and, inspired by work of Ullmo and Zhang, termed this the Bogomolov property. In this paper, we use results on equidistribution of points of low height to generalize both Bogomolov-type results to a wide variety of heights arising in arithmetic dynamics.

Abstract:Let s be a special point on a Shimura variety, and x a pre-image of s in a fixed fundamental set of the associated Hermitian symmetric domain. We prove that the height of x is polynomially bounded with respect to the discriminant of the centre of the endomorphism ring of the corresponding Z-Hodge structure. Our bound is the final step needed to complete a proof of the Andre-Oort conjecture under the conjectural lower bounds for the sizes of Galois orbits of special points, using a strategy of Pila and Zannier.

Abstract:In these lectures we cover basics of the theory of heights starting with the heights in the projective space, heights of polynomials, and heights of the algebraic curves. We define the minimal height of binary forms and moduli height for algebraic curves and prove that the moduli height of superelliptic curves $\mathcal H (f) \leq c_0 \tilde H (f)$ where $c_0$ is a constant and $\tilde H$ the minimal height of the corresponding binary form. For genus $g=2$ and 3 such constant is explicitly determined. Furthermore, complete lists of curves of genus 2 and genus 3 hyperelliptic curves with height 1 are computed.

Generalized cyclotomic polynomials associated with regular systems of divisors and arbitrary sets of positive integers

Abstract:We introduce and study the generalized cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_{A,S,n}(x)$ associated with a regular system $A$ of divisors and an arbitrary set $S$ of positive integers. We show that all of these polynomials have integer coefficients, they can be expressed as the product of certain classical cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_d(x)$ with $d\mid n$, and enjoy many other properties which are similar to the classical and unitary cases. We also point out some related Menon-type identities. One of them seems to be new even for the cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_n(x)$.

Heights and periods of algebraic cycles in families

Abstract:We consider the Beilinson-Bloch heights and Abel-Jacobian periods of homologically trivial Chow cycles in families. For the Beilinson-Bloch heights, we show that for any $g\ge 3$, we can construct a Zariski open dense subset $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{amp}}$ of $\mathcal{M}_g$, the coarse moduli of curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, such that the heights of Ceresa cycles and Gross-Schoen cycles over $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{amp}}$ have a lower bound and satisfy the Northcott property. For the Abel-Jacobi periods, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Schoen cycle over every non-$\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ point in $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{amp}}$ is non-torsion. We also prove results and make conjectures for any family $X \rightarrow S$ of smooth projective varieties and homologically trivial cocycles $Z$ defined over a number field. Using the Betti strata, we construct a Zariski open subset $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ of $S_{\mathbb{C}}$ over which $Z_s$ is non-torsion for all transcendental points $s$ and prove a criterion for $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ to be dense. We conjecture the rationality of $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ and also conjecture that $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ is precisely the open locus on which the Beilinson-Bloch height of $Z_s$ has a lower bound and satisfies the Northcott property.
