Abstract:Artificial quantum systems have emerged as indispensable platforms to realize exotic topological matter in a well-controlled manner. Here, we demonstrate topological quantum Heisenberg spin lattices, engineered with spin chains and two-dimensional spin arrays using spin 1/2 atoms on insulating films in a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). We engineered with atomic precision both topological and trivial phases of the quantum spin model, realizing first- and second-order topological quantum magnets. Their many-body excitations were probed by single-atom electron spin resonance with ultrahigh energy resolution. The atomically-localized magnetic field of the STM tip allows us to directly visualize various topological bound modes including topological edge states, topological defects, and higher-order corner modes. Our results provide an important bottom-up approach to simulating exotic quantum many-body phases of interacting spins.

Abstract:Unlocking the potential of topological order within many-body spin systems has long been a central pursuit in the realm of quantum materials. Despite extensive efforts, the quest for a versatile platform enabling site-selective spin manipulation, essential for tuning and probing diverse topological phases, has persisted. Here, we utilize on-surface synthesis to construct spin-1/2 alternating-exchange Heisenberg (AH) chains[1] with antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ by covalently linking Clar's goblets -- nanographenes each hosting two antiferromagnetically-coupled unpaired electrons[2]. Utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy, we exert atomic-scale control over the spin chain lengths, parities and exchange-coupling terminations, and probe their magnetic response by means of inelastic tunneling spectroscopy. Our investigation confirms the gapped nature of bulk excitations in the chains, known as triplons[3]. Besides, the triplon dispersion relation is successfully extracted from the spatial variation of tunneling spectral amplitudes. Furthermore, depending on the parity and termination of chains, we observe varying numbers of in-gap $S=1/2$ edge spins, enabling the determination of the degeneracy of distinct topological ground states in the thermodynamic limit-either 1, 2, or 4. By monitoring interactions between these edge spins, we identify the exponential decay of spin correlations. Our experimental findings, corroborated by theoretical calculations, present a phase-controlled many-body platform, opening promising avenues toward the development of spin-based quantum devices.

Abstract:The interplay between the spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions acting on a spinful Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model is studied based on an InAs nanowire subjected to a periodic gate potential along the axial direction. It is shown that a nontrivial topological phase can be achieved by regulating the confining-potential configuration. In the absence of the Zeeman field, we prove that the topology of the chain is not affected by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction due to the persisting chiral symmetry. The energies of the edge modes can be manipulated by varying the magnitude and direction of the external magnetic field. Remarkably, the joint effect of the two spin-related interactions leads to novel edge states that appear in the gap formed by the anti-crossing of the bands of a finite spinful dimerized chain, and can be merged into the bulk states by tilting the magnetic-field direction.
Topological States in Dimerized Quantum-Dot Chains Created by Atom Manipulation

Abstract:Topological electronic phases exist in a variety of naturally occurring materials but can also be created artificially. We used a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope to create dimerized chains of identical quantum dots on a semiconductor surface and to demonstrate that these chains give rise to one-dimensional topological phases. The dots were assembled from charged adatoms, creating a confining potential with single-atom precision acting on electrons in surface states of the semiconductor. Quantum coupling between the dots leads to electronic states localized at the ends of the chains, as well as at deliberately created internal domain walls, in agreement with the predictions of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy also reveals deviations from this well-established model manifested in an asymmetric level spectrum and energy shifts of the boundary states. The deviations arise because the dots are charged and hence lead to an onsite potential that varies along the chain. We show that this variation can be mitigated by electrostatic gating using auxiliary charged adatoms, enabling fine-tuning of the boundary states and control of their quantum superposition. The experimental data, which are complemented by theoretical modeling of the potential and the resulting eigenstates, reveal the important role of electrostatics in these engineered quantum structures.

Abstract:Recent advances in electron spin resonance techniques have allowed the manipulation of the spin of individual atoms, making magnetic atomic chains on superconducting hosts one of the most promising platform where topological superconductivity can be engineered. Motivated by this progress, we provide a detailed, quantitative description of the effects of manipulating spins in realistic nanowires by applying a first-principles-based computational approach to a recent experiment: an iron chain deposited on top of Au/Nb heterostructure. As a continuation of the first part of the paper experimentally relevant computational experiments are performed in spin spiral chains that shed light on several concerns about practical applications and add new aspects to the interpretation of recent experiments. We explore the stability of topological zero energy states, the formation and distinction of topologically trivial and non-trivial zero energy edge states, the effect of local changes in the exchange fields, the emergence of topological fragmentation, and the shift of Majorana Zero Modes along the superconducting nanowires opening avenues toward the implementation of a braiding operation.

Abstract:The topology of a topological material can be encoded in its surface states. These surface states can only be removed by a bulk topological quantum phase transition into a trivial phase. Here we use photoemission spectroscopy to image the formation of protected surface states in a topological insulator as we chemically tune the system through a topological transition. Surprisingly, we discover an exotic spin-momentum locked, gapped surface state in the trivial phase that shares many important properties with the actual topological surface state in anticipation of the change of topology. Using a spin-resolved measurement, we show that apart from a surface bandgap these states develop spin textures similar to the topological surface states well before the transition. Our results offer a general paradigm for understanding how surface states in topological phases arise from a quantum phase transition and are suggestive for the future realization of Weyl arcs, condensed matter supersymmetry and other fascinating phenomena in the vicinity of a quantum criticality.

Abstract:Topological phases of matter give rise to exotic physics that can be leveraged for next generation quantum computation and spintronic devices. Thus, the search for topological phases and the quantum states that they exhibit have become the subject of a massive research effort in condensed matter physics. Topologically protected states have been produced in a variety of systems, including artificial lattices, graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and bismuth bilayers. Despite these advances, the real-time manipulation of individual topological states and their relative coupling, a necessary feature for the realization of topological qubits, remains elusive. Guided by first-principles calculations, we spatially manipulate robust, zero-dimensional topological states by altering the topological invariants of quasi-one-dimensional artificial graphene nanostructures. This is achieved by positioning carbon monoxide molecules on a copper surface to confine its surface state electrons into artificial atoms positioned to emulate the low-energy electronic structure of graphene derivatives. Ultimately, we demonstrate control over the coupling between adjacent topological states that are finely engineered and simulate complex Hamiltonians. Our atomic synthesis gives access to an infinite range of nanoribbon geometries, including those beyond the current reach of synthetic chemistry, and thus provides an ideal platform for the design and study of novel topological and quantum states of matter.
Topological Phases in Graphene Nanoribbons: Junction States, Spin Centers and Quantum Spin Chains

Abstract:Knowledge of the topology of the electronic ground state of materials has led to deep insights to novel phenomena such as the integer quantum Hall effect and fermion-number fractionalization, as well as other properties of matter. Joining two insulators of different topological classes produces fascinating boundary states in the band gap. Another exciting recent development is the bottom-up synthesis (from molecular precursors) of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with atomic precision control of their edge and width. Here we connect these two fields, and show for the first time that semiconducting GNRs of different width, edge, and end termination belong to different topological classes. The topology of GNRs is protected by spatial symmetries and dictated by the terminating unit cell. We have derived explicit formula for their topological invariants, and show that localized junction states developed between two GNRs of distinct topology may be tuned by lateral junction geometry. The topology of a GNR can be further modified by dopants, such as a periodic array of boron atoms. In a superlattice consisted of segments of doped and pristine GNRs, the junction states are stable spin centers, forming a Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 chain with tunable exchange interaction. The discoveries here are not only of scientific interest for studies of quasi one-dimensional systems, but also open a new path for design principles of future GNR-based devices through their topological characters.

Controlling in-gap end states by linking nonmagnetic atoms and artificially-constructed spin chains on superconductors

Abstract:Chains of magnetic atoms with either strong spin-orbit coupling or spiral magnetic order which are proximity-coupled to superconducting substrates can host topologically non-trivial Majorana bound states. The experimental signature of these states consists of spectral weight at the Fermi energy and spatially localized near the ends of the chain. However, topologically trivial Yu-Shiba-Rusinov in-gap states localized near the ends of the chain can lead to similar spectra. Here, we explore a protocol to disentangle these contributions by artificially augmenting a candidate Majorana spin chain with orbitally-compatible nonmagnetic atoms. Combining scanning tunneling spectroscopy with ab-initio and tight-binding calculations, we realize a sharp spatial transition between the proximity-coupled spiral magnetic order and the non-magnetic superconducting wire termination, with persistent zero-energy spectral weight localized at either end of the magnetic spiral. Our findings open a new path towards the control of the spatial position of in-gap end states, trivial or Majorana, via different chain terminations, and the realization of designer Majorana chain networks for demonstrating topological quantum computation.

Topological Incommensurate Magnetization Plateaus in Quasi-Periodic Quantum Spin Chains

Abstract:Uncovering topologically nontrivial states in nature is an intriguing and important issue in recent years. While most studies are based on the topological band insulators, the topological state in strongly correlated low-dimensional systems has not been extensively explored due to the failure of direct explanation from the topological band insulator theory on such systems and the origin of the topological property is unclear. Here we report the theoretical discovery of strongly correlated topological states in quasi-periodic Heisenberg spin chain systems corresponding to a series of incommensurate magnetization plateaus under the presence of the magnetic field, which are uniquely determined by the quasi-periodic structure of exchange couplings. The topological features of plateau states are demonstrated by the existence of non-trivial spin-flip edge excitations, which can be well characterized by nonzero topological invariants defined in a two-dimensional parameter space. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the topological invariant of the plateau state can be read out from a generalized Streda formula and the spin-flip excitation spectrum exhibits a similar structure of the Hofstadter's butterfly spectrum for the two-dimensional quantum Hall system on a lattice.

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic spin-1 chains host the celebrated symmetry protected topological Haldane phase, whose spin-1/2 edge states were evidenced in bulk by, e.g., Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). Recent success in assembling effective spin-1 antiferromagnetic chains from nanographene and porphyrin molecules opens the possibility of local, site-by-site, characterization. The nascent technique of combined ESR-STM is able to measure the spin dynamics with atomic real-space resolution, and could fully reveal and manipulate the spin-1/2 degree of freedom. In this work, we combine exact diagonalization and DMRG to investigate the local dynamic spin structure factor of the different phases of the bilinear-biquadratic Hamiltonian with single-ion anisotropy in presence of an external magnetic field. We find that the signature of the Haldane phase is a low-energy peak created by singlet-triplet transitions in the edge-state manifold. We predict that the signature peak is experimentally observable, although for chains of length above N = 30 its energy should be first tuned by application of external magnetic field. We fully characterize the peak in real-space and energy, and further show its robustness to weak anisotropy and a relevant range of temperatures.

Quantum State Transfer in a Magnetic Atoms Chain Using a Scanning Tunneling Microscope

Abstract:The electric control of quantum spin chains has been an outstanding goal for the few last years due to its potential use in technologies related to quantum information processing. In this work, we show the feasibility of the different steps necessary to perform controlled quantum state transfer in a $S=1/2$ titanium atoms chain employing the electric field produced by a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). Our results show that the initialization and transmission of a single excitation state is achievable in short times, and with high fidelity. Our study uses spin Hamiltonians to model the magnetic atoms chain, the tip of the STM, the interaction between it and the atoms chain and the electronic response to the fields applied by the tip, employing sets of parameters compatible with the latest experiments and ab initio calculations. The time dynamical evolution is considered in the full Hilbert space and the control pulses frequencies exerted by the tip of the microscope are within the reach of present day technology.

Engineering Topological States in Graphene Systems

Abstract:In this talk, I will introduce our recent progress on engineering various topological states in graphene systems. The presentation includes two parts: (i) We show that in monolayer graphene, Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) together with Zeeman field can open a nontrivial bulk gap to host the quantum anomalous-Hall effect [1]. We further show that this can be realized via doping magnetic metal atoms on graphene [2,3]. In Bernal stacking bilayer graphene, an interlayer potential difference breaks the inversion symmetry and opens a bulk gap to support the quantum valley-Hall effect. We find that Rashba SOC can induce a topological phase transition from the quantum valley-Hall effect to a Z2 topological insulator [4]. When the Zeeman field is further considered, a rich variety of topological phases emerge. (ii) When the mass term (e.g., sublattice potential in monolayer graphene, or interlayer potential difference in bilayer graphene) varies spatially, topologically protected 1D kink states arise along zero lines. We demonstrate that such 1D kink state exhibits zero bend resistance for arbitrary turns in its propagating path [5]. We further point out that similar kink states can be tailored in graphene nanoroads in boron nitride sheets [6]. When the kink current experiences a crossing junction composed of four zero lines, we find the splitting of the 1D kink state at the bifurcation point obeys an explicit law of current partition [7].

Abstract:The recent advent of topological states of matter spawned many significant discoveries. The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is a prime example due to its potential for applications in quantum metrology, as well as its influence on fundamental research into the underlying topological and magnetic states and into axion electrodynamics. Here, electronic transport studies on a (V,Bi,Sb)2 Te3 ferromagnetic topological insulator nanostructure in the QAH regime are presented. This allows access to the dynamics of an individual ferromagnetic domain. The domain size is estimated to be in the 50-100 nm range. Telegraph noise resulting from the magnetization fluctuations of this domain is observed in the Hall signal. Careful analysis of the influence of temperature and external magnetic field on the domain switching statistics provides evidence for quantum tunneling (QT) of magnetization in a macrospin state. This ferromagnetic macrospin is not only the largest magnetic object in which QT is observed, but also the first observation of the effect in a topological state of matter.

Abstract:Topological superconductivity emerges in chains or arrays of magnetic atoms coupled to a superconductor. However, the external controllability of such systems with gate voltages is detrimental for their future implementation in a topological quantum computer. Here we showcase the supramolecular assembly of radical molecules on Pb(111), whose discharge is controlled by the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. Charged molecules carry a spin-1/2 state, as confirmed by observing Yu-Shiba-Rusinov in-gap states by tunneling spectroscopy at millikelvin temperature. Low energy modes are localized at island boundaries with a long decay towards the interior, whose spectral signature is consistent with Majorana zero modes protected by mirror symmetry. Our results open up a vast playground for the synthesis of gate-tunable organic topological superconductors.

Spin transport properties in a topological insulator sandwiched between two-dimensional magnetic layers

Abstract:Nontrivial band topology along with magnetism leads to different novel quantum phases. When time-reversal-symmetry is broken in three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) by applying high enough magnetic field or proximity effect, different phases such as quantum Hall or quantum anomalous Hall(QAH) emerge and display interesting transport properties for spintronic applications. The QAH phase displays sidewall chiral edge states which leads to the QAH effect. In a finite slab, contribution of the surface states depends on both the cross-section and thickness of the system. Having a small cross-section and a thin thickness leads to direct coupling of the surfaces, on the other hand, a thicker slab results in a higher contribution of the non-trivial sidewall states which connect top and bottom surfaces. In this regard, we have considered a heterostructure consisting of a TI, namely Bi2Se3, which is sandwiched between two-dimensional magnetic monolayers of CrI3 to study its topological and transport properties. Combining DFT and tight-binding calculations along with non-equilibrium Green's function formalism, we show that a well-defined exchange gap appears in the band structure in which spin polarised edge states flow. We also study the width and finite-size effect on the transmission and topological properties of this magnetised TI nanoribbon.

Topological phase and lattice structures in spin chain models

Abstract:Finding new topological materials and understanding the physical essence of topology are crucial problems for researchers. We studied the topological property based on several proposed Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) related models. We show that the topologically non-trivial phase (TNP) in the SSH model can exist in other model conditions and can even be caused by anisotropy; its origin has a close relation with the even-bond dimerization. Further study shows that the TNP is not determined by the periodicity of the system, but the parity of the two kinds of bonds plays a significant role for the formation of the TNP. This finding reveals the topological invariant of the system and might supply potential extended topological materials for both theoretical and experimental researches.

Abstract:A variety of exotic quantum phases of matter have been created by Van der Waals heterostructures. Moreover, these twisted heterostructures provide a feasible way of braiding correlation effect and nontrivial band topology together. Here, through a comprehensive spectrum study, we report the discovery of topological torus lattice in twisted mono-bilayer graphene. The strong Coulomb correlations give rise to an unusual charge localization behavior within the moiré supercell, leading to an electron crystal. The nontrivial band topology is encoded into the electron crystal, which would result in spatial modulated Chern numbers, and is evidenced by an emergent topological torus lattice state. Our result illustrates an efficient strategy for entwining and engineering topological physics with a strong electron correlation.
