Abstract:The original motivation of great interest to topological insulators was the hope to observe the quantum spin Hall effect. Therefore if a material is in the topological insulator state they frequently call it the quantum spin Hall state. However, despite impressive experimental results confirming the existence of the quantum spin Hall state, the quantum spin Hall effect has not yet been detected. After a short overview of what was originally suggested as the quantum spin Hall effect (quantum spin conductance determined by the topological Chern number) the paper analyzes the crucial role of the boundary condition on the observation of the effect and finally discusses whether and how the quantum spin Hall effect could be observed.

Abstract:The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect has been recently discovered in an experiment using a thin-film topological insulator with ferromagnetic ordering and strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we investigate the spin degree of freedom of a QAH insulator and uncover the fundamental phenomenon that the edge states exhibit a topologically stable spin texture in the boundary when a chiral-like symmetry is present. This result shows that edge states are chiral in both the orbital and spin degrees of freedom, and the chiral edge spin texture corresponds to the bulk topological states of the QAH insulator. We also study the potential applications of the edge spin texture in designing topological-state-based spin devices, which might be applicable to future spintronic technologies.

Abstract:The quantum Hall liquid is a novel state of matter with profound emergent properties such as fractional charge and statistics. The existence of the quantum Hall effect requires breaking of the time reversal symmetry caused by an external magnetic field. In this work, we predict a quantized spin Hall effect in the absence of any magnetic field, where the intrinsic spin Hall conductance is quantized in units of 2(e/4pi). The degenerate quantum Landau levels are created by the spin-orbit coupling in conventional semiconductors in the presence of a strain gradient. This new state of matter has many profound correlated properties described by a topological field theory.

Abstract:We consider the topological characteristics of the spin-orbital coupling particles loaded in one-dimensional (1D) optical superlattices subject to the Zeeman field. The phase shift of the superlattice provides a virtual dimension which allows us to simulate two-dimensional topological phases with a physically 1D system. The system possesses a variety of quantum phase transitions over a large parametric space and two important topological phases, namely, quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) and quantum spin Hall (QSH) phases are found to coexist in the system, but they reside in different bandgaps. This new category of gap-dependent QAH--QSH insulator paves the way for the possible observation of the coexistence of QSH and QAH effects at one platform.

Abstract:Topological insulators show unique properties resulting from massless, Dirac-like surface states that are protected by time-reversal symmetry. Theory predicts that the surface states exhibit a quantum spin Hall effect with counter-propagating electrons carrying opposite spins in the absence of an external magnetic field. However, to date, the revelation of these states through conventional transport measurements remains a significant challenge owing to the predominance of bulk carriers. Here, we report on an experimental observation of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in quantum capacitance measurements, which originate from topological helical states. Unlike the traditional transport approach, the quantum capacitance measurements are remarkably alleviated from bulk interference at high excitation frequencies, thus enabling a distinction between the surface and bulk. We also demonstrate easy access to the surface states at relatively high temperatures up to 60 K. Our approach may eventually facilitate an exciting exploration of exotic topological properties at room temperature.
Quantum Spin Hall Effect and Topological Phase Transition in Two-Dimensional Square Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators (TIs) hold promise for applications in spintronics based on the fact that the propagation direction of edge electrons of a 2D TI is robustly linked to their spin origination. Here, with the use of first-principles calculations, we predict a family of robust 2D TIs in monolayer square transition metal dichalcogenides (MoS2, MoSe2, MoTe2, WS2, WSe2, and WTe2). Sizeable intrinsic nontrivial bulk band gaps ranging from 24 to 187 meV are obtained, guarantying the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect observable at room temperature in these new 2D TIs. Significantly different from most known 2D TIs with comparable band gaps, these sizeable energy gaps originate from the strong spin-orbit interaction related to the pure d electrons of the Mo/W atoms around the Fermi level. A single pair of topologically protected helical edge states is established for the edge of these systems with the Dirac point locating in the middle of the bulk band gap, and their topologically nontrivial states are also confirmed with nontrivial topological invariant Z2 = 1. More interestingly, by controlling the applied strain, a topological quantum phase transition between a QSH phase and a metallic phase or a trivial insulating phase can be realized in these 2D materials, and the detailed topological phase diagram is established.

Two-dimensional dephasing effects in topological insulators

Abstract:Topological insulator is one of the most attractive areas in condensed matter physics in recent years.The study of the dephasing effect in such systems has important theoretical meanings and meanwhile,is inevitable for the realization of future quantum devices.In our studies of the influence of dephasing on the two-dimensional topological insulator,especially the quantum spin Hall effect,we find that the quantized longitudinal resistance plateaus are robust against normal dephasing but fragile to spin dephasing. Thus, these quantized plateaus can only survive in mesoscopic samples in which the spin coherence length is smaller than the sample size. Our results are in excellent agreement with experiments (Science,2007,318:766). In addition, we define a new spin Hall resistance that also exhibits quantum plateaus, which are robust against both normal and spin dephasings. These novel quantum plateaus can thus survive in macroscopic samples and better reflect the topological nature of the quantum spin Hall effect.

Abstract:The dephasing effect on the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) is studied. Without dephasing, the longitudinal resistance in a QSHE system exhibits the quantum plateaus. We find that these quantum plateaus are robust against the normal dephasing but fragile with the spin dephasing. Thus, these quantum plateaus survive only in mesoscopic samples. Moreover, the longitudinal resistance increases linearly with the sample length but is insensitive to the sample width. These characters are in excellent agreement with the recent experimental results [Science 318, 766 (2007)]. In addition, we define a new spin Hall resistance that also exhibits quantum plateaus. In particular, these plateaus are robust against any type of dephasing and therefore, survive in macroscopic samples and better reflect the topological nature of QSHE.

Abstract:We study theoretically the two-dimensional topological electric state in a single band semiconductor with strong spin-orbit interactions under harmonic scalar electrostatic potentials. The electronic states described by the spin Landau levels are insulating in the bulk and host gapless edge states in the presence of time-reversal symmetry. Such topological states show the properties of the quantized electric conductivity and the quantized spin Hall conductivity characterized by the spin Chern number $\mathbb{Z}$. The quantization of the two conductivities are robust under various perturbations such as the potential disorder, the Zeeman field, and the spin-orbit scatterings. Existing semiconductor technologies would realize the topological states discussed in the present paper.

Abstract:A topologically ordered material is characterized by a rare quantum organization of electrons that evades the conventional spontaneously broken symmetry–based classification of condensed matter. Exotic spin-transport phenomena, such as the dissipationless quantum spin Hall effect, have been speculated to originate from a topological order whose identification requires a spin-sensitive measurement, which does not exist to this date in any system. Using Mott polarimetry, we probed the spin degrees of freedom and demonstrated that topological quantum numbers are completely determined from spin texture–imaging measurements. Applying this method to Sb and Bi 1–x Sb x , we identified the origin of its topological order and unusual chiral properties. These results taken together constitute the first observation of surface electrons collectively carrying a topological quantum Berry's phase and definite spin chirality, which are the key electronic properties component for realizing topological quantum computing bits with intrinsic spin Hall–like topological phenomena.

Abstract:The quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator, ensured by the time-reversal (T) symmetry, has been a conceptual milestone of complex topological phases and well known to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect when T symmetry is broken by introducing ferromagnetism. Here, based on first-principles calculations and a tight-binding model, we show that, unlike previous T-symmetry breaking, the QSH phase can survive under the antiferromagnetic long-range order in a RbCuSe/CsMnP heterobilayer consisting of a nonmagnetic QSH insulator RbCuSe and an antiferromagnetic insulator CsMnP. The calculated spin Chern number, Z2 invariant, and gapless edge state confirm the topological nontrivial phase clearly. Moreover, the role of effective and Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the magnitude of antiferromagnetism are discussed to reveal the underlying physical mechanism. Our results may lead to further scientific and technological advances in topological magnetism and antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Spin-Triplet Topological Excitonic Insulators in Two-dimensional Materials

Abstract:Quantum spin-hall insulator (QSHI) processes nontrivial topology. We notice that the electronic structures of some particular QSHIs are favorable for realization of excitonic insulators (EIs). Using first-principles many-body perturbation theory ($GW$+BSE) and $k \cdot p$ model, we show that high-temperature ($T$) topological EIs with unlike spin can exist in such QSHIs with non-vanishing band gaps, e.g. 2D AsO and $\text{Mo}_2\text{Ti}\text{C}_2\text{O}_2$. Spin-triplet type EI phase induced by strong electron-hole interaction preserves time-reversal symmetry and the topological characteristics. A novel optical selection rule exists, upon going through the phase transition from the normal QSHIs to the topological EIs, absorption spectroscopy shows pronounced $T$-dependent changes, providing guidance for future experimental detections. The demonstrated coupling between EIs and topology also means that rich physics exists in such materials which retain such interdisciplinary features.

Abstract:Topological insulators are emergent states of quantum matter that are gapped in the bulk with time-reversal symmetry-preserved gapless edge/surface states, adiabatically distinct from conventional materials. By proximity to various magnets and superconductors, topological insulators show novel physics at the interfaces, which give rise to two new areas named topological spintronics and topological quantum computation. Effects in the former such as the spin torques, spin-charge conversion, topological antiferromagnetic spintronics, and skyrmions realized in topological systems will be addressed. In the latter, a superconducting pairing gap leads to a state that supports Majorana fermions states, which may provide a new path for realizing topological quantum computation. Various signatures of Majorana zero modes/edge mode in topological superconductors will be discussed. The review ends by outlooks and potential applications of topological insulators. Topological superconductors that are fabricated using topological insulators with superconductors have a full pairing gap in the bulk and gapless surface states consisting of Majorana fermions. The theory of topological superconductors is reviewed, in close analogy to the theory of topological insulators.

Abstract:We present a topological description of the quantum spin-Hall effect (QSHE) in a two-dimensional electron system on a honeycomb lattice with both intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. We show that the topology of the band insulator can be characterized by a 2x2 matrix of first Chern integers. The nontrivial QSHE phase is identified by the nonzero diagonal matrix elements of the Chern number matrix (CNM). A spin Chern number is derived from the CNM, which is conserved in the presence of finite disorder scattering and spin nonconserving Rashba coupling. By using the Laughlin gedanken experiment, we numerically calculate the spin polarization and spin transfer rate of the conducting edge states and determine a phase diagram for the QSHE.

Abstract:Two-dimensional topological materials attracted intense interest in condensed matter physics due to their topologically protected edge states and potential applications in electronic devices. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we found that a two-dimensional CX3 (X = Sb, Bi) monolayer is a quantum spin Hall insulator with a large band gap. With the strong spin-orbit coupling effect, CX3 exhibits noticeable bulk band gaps up to 470 meV, sufficiently large for realizing the quantum spin Hall effect at room temperature. The topological characteristic is confirmed by the Z(2) invariant since the system preserves time-reversal symmetry. Particularly, the CSb3 monolayer displays unique topologically entangled Rashba-splitting edge states, resembling nearly free-electron quadratic dispersion. Such topologically entangled Rashba-like edge states derive from the spin-orbit coupling effect and inversion symmetry breaking on the edges. Moreover, we demonstrate that the topological properties are perfectly preserved in the CX3 monolayer even with a h-BN substrate. The nontrivial quantum spin Hall state in the CX3 monolayer will provide possibilities for studying a novel phenomenon of edge states and potential applications in low-dissipation electronic devices.

Abstract:<p>Geometric Berry phase can be induced either by spin-orbit coupling, giving rise to the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic materials, or by chiral spin texture, such as skyrmions, leading to the topological Hall effect. Recent experiments have revealed that both phenomena can occur in topological insulator films with magnetic doping, thus providing us with an intriguing platform to study the interplay between these two phenomena. In this work, we report on a numerical simulation of the anomalous Hall and topological Hall effects in a four-band model that can properly describe the quantum well states in the magnetic topological insulator films by combining Landauer-Büttiker formula and the iterative Green's function method. Our numerical results suggest that spin-orbit coupling in this model plays a different role in the quantum transport in the clean and disordered limits. In the clean limit, spin-orbit coupling mainly influences the longitudinal transport but does not have much effect on topological Hall conductance. In the disordered limit, the longitudinal transport is determined by disorder scattering and spin-orbit coupling is found to affect strongly the topological Hall conductance. This sharp contrast unveils a dramatic interplay between spin-orbit coupling and disorder effect in topological Hall effect in magnetic topological insulator systems.</p>
