Abstract:Magnetic materials hosting stable topological spin textures have demonstrated energy efficiency and potential as information carriers in novel logic and memory devices, offering an alternative to magnetic tunnel junction technology. While these structures are well understood in 2D, in 3D their stability, interactions, and topological transitions require further exploration. Here we present two thermodynamically stable topological states, termed the "hourglass" and "dome", in centrosymmetric magnetic films of varying thickness. Crucially, we observe thickness-dependent transitions between the two states, with regions of metastability where both configurations coexist. We construct a phase diagram detailing the parameter space for their existence and transitions, provide an effective description of the interactions that mediate the transition, and discuss the implications of this type of state switching.

Abstract:Topological swirling spin textures, such as skyrmions and merons, have recently attracted much attention as potential building blocks for high-density magnetic information devices. Controlling the transformation between different types of these quasiparticles is an important challenge. To date, these transitions have mostly been limited to a few non-centrosymmetric systems, where they are driven by the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. Here we demonstrate multistep topological transitions among a variety of meron and skyrmion crystal states in a centrosymmetric magnet GdRu 2 Ge 2 . These are governed by the competition between Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interactions at inequivalent wave vectors. These findings demonstrate that even a simple centrosymmetric magnet with competing interactions can be a promising material platform to realize a richer variety of magnetic quasiparticles with distinctive symmetry and topology, whose stability can be tuned by various external stimuli.

Abstract:Generation and control of topological spin textures constitutes one of the most exciting challenges of modern spintronics given their potential applications in information storage technologies. Of particular interest are magnetic insulators, which due to low damping, absence of Joule heating and reduced dissipation could provide energy‐efficient spin‐textures platform. Here we demonstrate that the interplay between sample thickness, external magnetic fields and optical excitations can generate a prolific paramount of spin textures, and their coexistence in insulating CrBr3 van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets. Using high‐resolution magnetic force microscopy and large‐scale micromagnetic simulation methods, we demonstrate the existence of a large region in T‐B phase diagram where different stripe domains, skyrmion crystals and magnetic domains exist and can be intrinsically selected or transformed to each‐other via a phase‐switch mechanism. Lorentz transmission electron microscopy unveiled the mixed chirality of the magnetic textures which are of Bloch‐type at given conditions but can be further manipulated into Néel‐type or hybrid‐type via thickness‐engineering. The topological phase transformation between the different magnetic objects could be further inspected by standard photoluminescence optical probes resolved by circular polarization indicative of an existance of exciton‐skyrmion coupling mechanism. Our findings identified vdW magnetic insulators as a promising framework of materials for the manipulation and generation of highly ordered skyrmion lattices relevant for device integration at the atomic level. Here, we report an experimental discovery of multi-step topological transitions among a variety of meron and skyrmion crystal states in a centrosymmetric magnet GdRu$_2$Ge$_2$. By performing the detailed magnetic structure analysis based on resonant X-ray and neutron scattering experiments as well as electron transport measurements, we have found that this compound hosts periodic lattice of elliptic skyrmions, meron/anti-meron pairs, and circular skyrmions as a function of external magnetic field. The diameter of these objects is as small as 2.7 nm, which is almost two orders of magnitude smaller than typical non-centrosymmetric magnets. Such an intricate manner of topological magnetic transitions are well reproduced by a theoretical model considering the competition between RKKY interactions at inequivalent wave vectors. The present findings demonstrate that even a simple centrosymmetric magnet with competing interactions can be a promising material platform to realize a richer variety of nanometric magnetic quasi-particles with distinctive symmetry and topology, whose stability may be tunable by various external stimuli.

Of particular interest are crystals with D2d symmetry that exhibit a complex variety of stable and metastable spin textures that includes antiskyrmions, elliptical Bloch‐skyrmions, fractional‐antiskyrmions, fractional Bloch‐skyrmions, and type‐II trivial‐bubbles. The observation of these structures necessitates their stabilization via magnetic field and temperature protocols which demands a thorough understanding of their creation, transformation, and collapse dynamics. Utilizing the real‐space imaging capabilities of Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, the generation and annihilation of diverse spin textures in a single D2d Heusler compound are demonstrated. It is showed that antiskyrmions and elliptical Bloch‐skyrmions can be deformed into more elaborate elongated magnetic nano‐objects through a collapse mechanism. Their elongation is governed by the intrinsic antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii‐Moriya vector exchange interaction and dipolar energy present in the system. Furthermore, antiskyrmions are found to be metastable at all temperatures on field‐cooling, while a topological phase transformation from elliptical Bloch‐skyrmions to antiskyrmions rather takes places on field‐heating. These results are corroborated by micromagnetic simulations and demonstrate the efficient manipulation of different spin textures in a D2d compound by varying field and temperature protocols and represents a critical step toward the application of magnetic skyrmions.

Abstract:Thanks to its unique symmetry, the unidirectional spin Hall and Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance (USRMR) is of great fundamental and practical interest, particularly in the context of reading magnetization states in two-terminal spin-orbit torque switching memory and logic devices. Recent studies show that topological insulators could improve USRMR amplitude. However, the topological insulator device configurations studied so far in this context, namely ferromagnetic metal/topological insulator bilayers and magnetically doped topological insulators, suffer from current shunting by the metallic layer and low Curie temperature, respectively. Here, we report large USRMR in a new material category - magnetic insulator/topological insulator bi-layered heterostructures. Such structures exhibit USRMR that is about an order of magnitude larger than the highest values reported so far in all-metal Ta/Co bilayers. We also demonstrate current-induced magnetization switching aided by an Oersted field, and electrical read out by the USRMR, as a prototype memory device.

Abstract:Particle-like magnetic textures with nanometric sizes, such as skyrmions, are potentially suitable for designing high-efficiency information bits in future spintronics devices. In general, the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions and dipolar interactions are the dominant factors for generating nonlinear spin configurations. However, to stabilize the topological skyrmions, an external magnetic field is usually required. In this study, the spontaneous emergence of skyrmions is directly observed, together with the unique successive topological domain evolution during the spin reorientation transition in a neodymium–cobalt (NdCo5) rare-earth magnet. On decreasing the temperature, nanometric skyrmion lattices evolve into enclosed in-plane domains (EIPDs) similar to mini bar-magnets with size below 120 nm. The internal magnetization rotates with magnetic anisotropy, demonstrating the ability to manipulate the mini bar-magnets. The nanoscale EIPD lattices remain robust over the wide temperature range of 241–167 K, indicating the possibility of high-density in-plane magnetic information storage. The generation of spontaneous magnetic skyrmions and the successive domain transformation in the traditional NdCo5 rare-earth magnet may prompt application exploration for topological magnetic spin textures with novel physical mechanisms in versatile magnets.

Unified topological characterization of electronic states in spin textures from noncommutative K-theory

Abstract:The nontrivial topology of spin systems such as skyrmions in real space can promote complex electronic states. Here, we provide a general viewpoint at the emergence of topological electronic states in spin systems based on the methods of noncommutative K-theory. By realizing that the structure of the observable algebra of spin textures is determined by the algebraic properties of the noncommutative hypertorus, we arrive at a unified understanding of topological electronic states which we predict to arise in various noncollinear setups. The power of our approach lies in an ability to categorize emergent topological states algebraically without referring to smooth real- or reciprocal-space quantities. This opens a way towards an educated design of topological phases in aperiodic, disordered, or non-smooth textures of spins and charges containing topological defects.

Abstract:Abstract Topological spin textures such as magnetic skyrmions 1-7 are promising candidates as information carriers for next-generation memory-in-logic devices 8 . Antiferromagnetic spin textures 9-12 , compared to their ferromagnetic counterparts, innately possess high stability with respect to external disturbance 13,14 and high-frequency dynamics 15-18 compatible with ultrafast information processing. However, deterministic creation and reconfigurable switching of different antiferromagnetic spin textures have not been realized so far. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature deterministic switching between antiferromagnetic domain walls, Bloch bimerons and Néel bimerons in single-crystal hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) 12,19-22 . All three topological states are found to be remarkably stable and fully controllable, as confirmed by 1’000 switching cycles. Their dynamics exhibit distinct resonance frequencies and magnetic field dependences. The switching from domain walls to Bloch bimerons requires only one microwave pulse (100 ns) with ultralow energy consumption (1 nJ). When the dynamic excitation wavevector approaches that of static spin textures, and the power lies beyond a threshold, chaotic magnons 23-26 are excited, which subsequently nucleate bimerons and finally lead to a deterministic switching, as unveiled by micromagnetic simulations. The progressive switching from Bloch-type to Néel-type bimerons imitates the weighted sum operation in neuromorphic computing 27,28 . Thus, our work points to the possibility of using spin textures in antiferromagnets for information processing.

Abstract:Stabilization of topological spin textures in layered magnets has the potential to drive the development of advanced low-dimensional spintronics devices. However, achieving reliable and flexible manipulation of the topological spin textures beyond skyrmion in a two-dimensional magnet system remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate the introduction of magnetic iron atoms between the van der Waals gap of a layered magnet, Fe3GaTe2, to modify local anisotropic magnetic interactions. Consequently, we present direct observations of the order-disorder skyrmion lattices transition. In addition, non-trivial topological solitons, such as skyrmioniums and skyrmion bags, are realized at room temperature. Our work highlights the influence of random spin control of non-trivial topological spin textures.
Multi-Level Switching of Spin-Torque Ferromagnetic Resonance in 2D Magnetite

Abstract:2D magnetic materials hold substantial promise in information storage and neuromorphic device applications. However, achieving a 2D material with high Curie temperature (TC), environmental stability, and multi-level magnetic states remains a challenge. This is particularly relevant for spintronic devices, which require multi-level resistance states to enhance memory density and fulfil low power consumption and multi-functionality. Here, the synthesis of 2D non-layered triangular and hexagonal magnetite (Fe3O4) nanosheets are proposed with high TC and environmental stability, and demonstrate that the ultrathin triangular nanosheets show broad antiphase boundaries (bAPBs) and sharp antiphase boundaries (sAPBs), which induce multiple spin precession modes and multi-level resistance. Conversely, the hexagonal nanosheets display slip bands with sAPBs associated with pinning effects, resulting in magnetic-field-driven spin texture reversal reminiscent of "0" and "1" switching signals. In support of the micromagnetic simulation, direct explanation is offer to the variation in multi-level resistance under a microwave field, which is ascribed to the multi-spin texture magnetization structure and the randomly distributed APBs within the material. These novel 2D magnetite nanosheets with unique spin textures and spin dynamics provide an exciting platform for constructing real multi-level storage devices catering to emerging information storage and neuromorphic computing requirements.

Abstract:Magnetization in a ferromagnetic layer could be manipulated by the spin-orbit torque whose generation commonly relies on the spin-orbit coupling from the adjacent heavy-metal layer within the bilayer. The fact that the magnetic topological insulator possesses both the ferromagnetic order with perpendicular anisotropy and inherent spin-orbit coupling inspires to realize such a torque-induced magnetization switching without forming any heterostructure with other materials. Here, only using a single layer of magnetically-doped topological insulator Cr:(Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 , we realize a magnetization switching only by applying a large dc current. Assisted by the magnetic history, such a switching behaves nonvolatile under zero field but becomes volatile otherwise, as consistently shown by magnetoelectric transports and magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. Static and quasistatic current are found to be equivalent for the switching. We propose that this switching may associate with the torque resulted from the spin-orbit coupling and the compositional asymmetry in the Cr-profile of the single layer.

Abstract:In the face of escalating modern data storage demands and the constraints of Moore's Law, exploring spintronic solutions, particularly the devices based on magnetic skyrmions, has emerged as a promising frontier in scientific research. Since the first experimental observation of skyrmions, topological spin textures have been extensively studied for their great potential as efficient information carriers in spintronic devices. However, significant challenges have emerged alongside this progress. This review aims to synthesize recent advances in skyrmion research while addressing the major issues encountered in the field. Additionally, we summarize current research on promising topological spin structures in addition to skyrmions. Beyond two‐dimensional structures, exploration also extends to one‐dimensional magnetic solitons and three‐dimensional spin textures. In addition, we introduce a diverse array of emerging magnetic materials, including antiferromagnets and two‐dimensional van der Waals magnets, broadening the scope of potential materials hosting topological spin textures. Through a systematic examination of magnetic principles, topological categorization, and the dynamics of spin textures, we offer a comprehensive overview of experimental and theoretical advances in the research of topological magnetism. Finally, we summarize both conventional and unconventional applications based on spin textures proposed thus far. This review provides an outlook on future development in applied spintronics. Topological state transitions in electromagnetic topological defects

Abstract:The recent emergence of electromagnetic topological defects has attracted wide interest in fields from topological photonics to deep-subwavelength light-mater interactions. Previously, much of the research has focused on constructing specific topological defects but the fundamental theory describing the physical mechanisms underlying their formation and transitions is lacking. Here, we present a spin-orbit coupling based theory describing such mechanisms for various configurations of spin topological defects in confined electromagnetic fields. The results reveal that their formation originates from the conservation of total angular momentum and that their transitions are determined by anisotropic spin-orbit couplings. By engineering the spin-orbit couplings, we observe the formation and transitions of Neel-type, twisted-type, and Bloch-type spin topological defects in confined electromagnetic fields. A stable Block-type spin topological defect is reported for the first time. Our theory can also describe the transitions of field topological defects. The findings enrich the portfolio of electromagnetic topological defects, deepen our understanding of conserved laws, spin-orbit couplings and transitions of topological defects in confined electromagnetic systems, and predict applications in high-density optical data transmissions and chiral quantum optics.

Abstract:Antiferromagnetically (AFM) coupled skyrmions offer potential advantages for spintronic devices, including reduced dipolar fields that may enable smaller skyrmion sizes and a reduction of the skyrmion Hall effect. However, the topological stability of AFM-coupled skyrmions subjected to dramatic spin deformation through low-temperature cycling has not been investigated. Here we report the discovery of a topological spin memory effect for AFM-coupled skyrmion pairs in [Co/Gd/Pt]10 multilayered films. Photoemission electron microscopy imaging shows that bubble skyrmions in the multilayer that are stable at room temperature evolve into complex in-plane spin textures as the temperature is lowered and reform completely when the sample is warmed back up. Simulations demonstrate that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions play a key role in this spin memory effect, and furthermore reveal that the topological charge is preserved throughout the dramatic spin texture rearrangement and recovery. These results highlight a key aspect of topological protection—the preservation of the topological properties under continuous deformation—and also provide a promising avenue for information encryption and recovery.

Abstract:Topological spin configurations have been an intriguing topic due to the exotic transport properties and promising applications in spintronic devices. The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials such as CrI3 provides new platforms for manipulating magnetic structures. Here, by first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo methods, we investigated the exchange interaction and magnetic states of 2D van der Waals ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructure CrI3/In2Se3. By switching the polarization in the ferroelectric In2Se3 layer under an electric field and changing the interlayer distance between CrI3 and In2Se3 under pressure, four spin configurations, ferromagnetic states, topological domain wall skyrmions, topological bimerons, and stripe domains can be realized. These striking tunable magnetic states can be understood from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and single-ion anisotropy parameters being modified by switching the polarization and changing the interlayer distance. Our results of controllable topological/non-topological spin states broaden the spin phenomena and potential of spintronic applications in van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable magnetic textures with novel behaviors suitable for applications in future spintronic devices. Tuning the temperature range of topological spin textures is imperative for their potential applications. Here, by means of the rapid solidification, topological magnetic transitions in the NdCo5 bulk alloy are manipulated whereby skyrmions spontaneously generate at a higher temperature in ribbons. The direct observation of magnetic domain evolution via in situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy reveals that the topological magnetic transition is dependent on the crystal orientations, where magnetic domain evolution is different within the a-b plane between the bulk and ribbons of NdCo5. Our work provides a way to tune the temperature range of topological spin textures and helps to clarify the importance of magnetic anisotropy on stabilizing the topological spin textures.
