Engineering Failure Analysis
Abstract:<p>The corrosion problem of atmospheric tower, as the main distillation unit in refineries, has attracted much researchers' attention. Based on the Braun K-10 thermodynamic model and Peng-Robinson equation, the process simulation was performed to predict the corrosion risk in the atmospheric tower. The distributions of the temperature, phase state and corrosive components in the multi-component stream were analyzed. The results have shown that the temperature distribution in the atmospheric tower is linearly correlated with the processing capacity and the properties of raw materials. The feed with corrosive medium can reduce the tower temperature by 15℃ on average. In addition, it has been found that both of the ammonium salt under-deposited corrosion and dew point corrosion exist in the atmospheric tower. The initial crystallization temperature of ammonium salt is located at the 15th stage of tray, and the dew point corrosion region is among the 1st and 15th stage of tray. The prediction results of the high-risk corrosion areas are coincided to the actual corrosion regions.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper primarily investigates the corrosion characteristics and risk assessment of atmospheric distillation columns in refineries. Specifically: 1. **Impact of Corrosive Components**: The paper focuses on the impact of corrosive components (such as sulfur, nitrogen, and chlorine) in the atmospheric distillation column on the trays, column walls, and overhead condensation system. It also explores how these components affect the process flow of subsequent hydrogenation units. 2. **Corrosion Risk Prediction**: Based on the Braun K-10 thermodynamic model and the Peng-Robinson equation, the paper uses Aspen Plus software to simulate the process within the atmospheric distillation column, predicting the temperature distribution, phase changes, and distribution of corrosive components at various stages within the column. 3. **High-Risk Corrosion Area Analysis**: By analyzing the temperature distribution, phase changes, and distribution of corrosive components in the multi-component fluid within the atmospheric distillation column, the paper predicts high-risk corrosion areas and compares these predictions with actual corrosion phenomena for validation. In summary, this paper aims to deeply understand the corrosion mechanisms within atmospheric distillation columns through simulation and experimental data, predict high-risk corrosion areas, optimize the operating conditions of refining equipment, and improve production management levels.
