Abstract:Synthesis of Ni/TiO2 core/shell nanorod arrays is carried out using a one-step electrodeposition technique. The TiO2 shell and Ni core are synthesized at the same time. Furthermore, this approach makes the Ni core directly connect with the Ni substrate without a barrier layer, which would benefit electron transport from the Ni core to the substrate. The TiO2 shell thickness can be tuned from about 20 to 90 nm by changing the concentration of TiF4, and the length of the Ni/TiO2 core/shell nanorods can be tuned from about 2 to 60 mu m by changing the deposition potential or time. The NiMO2 core/shell nanorods are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction are used to determine the chemical composition and crystal structure of the Ni/TiO2 core/shell nanorods. The present approach can be used for synthesizing variable metal/TiO2 core/shell nanostructure.

Abstract:Fe-Ni alloys possess a range of excellent properties that are closely related to their composition, making them widely used in microelectronics, precision components, and electrocatalysis. Electrodeposition is a primary method for preparing Fe-Ni alloys. The codeposition process of Fe and Ni exhibits a characteristic preferential Fe deposition, resulting in a higher Fe/Ni atom ratio in the deposits than the Fe/Ni ion ratio in the electrolyte, which is categorized as anomalous codeposition. This paper reviews research findings on the mechanisms behind this anomalous codeposition, focusing on chemical reaction equilibrium and electrode kinetics. Key aspects include the hydrogen evolution side reaction, changes in near-surface pH, concentration profiles of main ion species near the cathode, and the competitive adsorption behavior of metal intermediate species. Additionally, the preparation and process parameters affecting alloy composition and underlying mechanisms are discussed. This comprehensive review aims to enhance understanding and control of the anomalous codeposition in Fe-Ni alloys, offering insights into the electrodeposition of other iron-group metals and expanding perspectives on metal electrodeposition.

Abstract:Fe-Ni-based nanocrystalline coatings with unique magnetic properties are widely used as soft magnetic materials and usually act as the core component in electronic devices. Nanocrystallized particles and thin films have become a popular contemporary research direction. Electrical explosion, characterized by an ultrafast atomization and quenching rate (dT/dt ~ 109–1011 K/s) for the material, is a unique approach for the rapid "single-step" synthesis of nanomaterials and coatings. In this study, experiments were carried out with intertwined wire under a directional spraying device in atmospheric Ar ambience. Two load systems of Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-Co were considered in this work. Electrical parameters and high-speed camera images were obtained to reveal the physical mechanism and dynamic process of explosive spraying. The morphologic and crystallographic results were characterized by SEM and XRD. The magnetic properties were measured via VSM equipment, and the parameters of saturation magnetization Ms, residual magnetization Mr, and coercivity Hc were emphasized in the hysteresis loop pattern. The experimental results indicate that a dense coating was prepared with extremely low porosity, and the morphology of the coating surface shows different regions characterized by solidified chunks and loose particles. XRD patterns showed that crystalline structures were discrepant under two load systems with different Ni weight proportions. Magnetic measurements gave a thin and narrow hysteresis loop, which represents loops with good soft magnetic properties. Quantitatively, coercivity Hc decreased from 59.3 to 52.6 and from 121.0 to 49.9 for the coatings not containing and containing Co under parallel and perpendicular fields, respectively.

Abstract:We have demonstrated the crystalline ZnO–Al2O3 core–shell nanowire structure by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at a temperature 100°C. The core–shell structure could have potential applications in the fabrication of ZnO field effect transistor. After dissolving the ZnO core, shape defined, rigid and robust crystalline Al2O3 shelled nanostructures have been fabricated. Nanowire ZnO nanostructures have been replicated by alumina shell. This is one of the most effective techniques for producing core–shell or shell/hollowed nanostructures of any desired objects. The Al2O3 shelled nanostructures could have potential applications as space confined nanoreactors, drug delivery, nanofluidic channels and optical transmitting.

Abstract:We report the fabrication of Co-Fe mixed oxides with an intriguing hierarchical nanostructure built on Fe-Co-Ni alloy substrate. This novel structure comprises two-dimensional (2D) nanostructured arrays and one-dimensional (1D) nanoneedles aligned on their top. The possible growth mechanism has been discussed in details on the basis of time-dependent experiments. The results indicate that the formation of 1D/2D nanostructures results from the secondary growth of Co-based hydroxides on layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanowalls. The precursor materials can be further transformed into Co-Fe mixed oxides by annealing in Argon atmosphere. Then, the nanostructured film of Co-Fe mixed oxides was investigated as cathode for field emission (FE) application. This work presents not only one kind of Co-based mixed oxides for possible FE cathode, but also a tunable pathway to build well-engineered hierarchical nanostructures.

Abstract:Abstract Highly-ordered Fe nanowires (NWs) were successfully electrodeposited in a laboratory made anodic aluminum oxide template with a diameter of 30 nm. The as prepared Fe NWs were used as a substrate to prepare core–shell Fe@Fe3O4 NWs after annealing and hydrogen reduction at high temperature. The phase transformation of the oxide shell of electrodeposited Fe NWs took the form Fe2O3 → α-Fe2O3 → Fe3O4. Transmission electron microscopy images revealed that the surface of Fe@Fe x−1O x NWs was smooth and orderly, and the oxide layer was dense and uniform. The magnetic analysis of Fe@Fe x−1 O x nanowires was carried out using a vibrating sample magnetometer. It was found that Fe@Fe3O4 nanowires manifested the characteristics of super-paramagnetism in the direction perpendicular to the nanowires due to smaller coercive force, and they can be suitable material for future biomedical applications.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) nanohierarchical Ni nanomace (Ni NM) array was fabricated on copper substrate by only one step with electroplating method, the unique structure was covered with Au film (Ni/Au NM) without changing its morphology, and in the following step, it was sintered with silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) paste. The structure of the Ni NM array and its surface morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and atomic force microscope. The sintered interface was investigated by SEM, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to analyze the sintering mechanism. The results showed that a metallurgical bond was successfully achieved at 250 °C without any gas or vacuum shield and extra pressure. The Cu substrate with Ni/Au NM array was able to join with the Ag NP paste without obvious voids. Due to the compatible chemical potential between Ag NPs and Ni/Au NM array, the Au element was able to diffuse into the Ag layer with about 800 nm distance. Based on the excellent 3D nanohierarchical structure, the shear strength of Ni/Au NM array was 6 times stronger than the flat Ni/Au coated substrate. It turned out that the substrate surface played a crucial role in improving the shear strength and sintering efficiency. The 3D Ni NM array had achieved an excellent bonding interface and had great potential application in the microelectronics packaging field.
Electrodeposition of Complex High Entropy Oxides via Water Droplet Formation and Conversion to Crystalline Alloy Nanoparticles

Abstract:A combination of electrodeposition and thermal reduction methods have been utilized for the synthesis of ligand-free FeNiCo alloy nanoparticles through a high-entropy oxide intermediate. These phases are of great interest to the electrocatalysis community, especially when formed by a sustainable chemistry method. This is successfully achieved by first forming a complex five element amorphous FeNiCoCrMn high-entropy oxide (HEO) phase via electrodeposition from a nanodroplet emulsion solution of the metal salt reactants. The amorphous oxide phase is then thermally treated and reduced at 570-600 °C to form the crystalline FeNiCo alloy with a separate CrMnOx cophase. The FeNiCo alloy is fully characterized by scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elemental analysis and is identified as a face-centered cubic crystal with the lattice constant a = 3.52 Å. The unoptimized, ligand-free FeNiCo NPs activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction is evaluated in alkaline solution and found to have an ∼185 mV more cathodic onset potential than the Pt metal. Beyond being able to synthesize highly crystalline, ligand-free FeNiCo nanoparticles, the demonstrated and relatively simple two-step process is ideal for the synthesis of tailor-made nanoparticles where the desired composition is not easily achieved with classical solution-based chemistries.

Abstract:Ni–Co alloy has high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, excellent magnetic and catalytic capabilities, and is widely used in energy development, chemical industry, electronics, aviation and aerospace, such as combustion chamber hot end parts, aircraft engine working blades and hydrogen evolution catalysts. It is well known that the properties of materials depend on the structure and morphology, which depend on the preparation method. At present, the main methods for preparing nano-Ni–Co alloy are electrodeposition, sol–gel method and solution reduction method. The parameters in these preparation methods affect the morphology and properties of nano-Ni–Co alloy, so it is particularly important to study the influence of various parameters on the properties of Ni–Co alloy. In this work, the preparation methods and research progress of nano-Ni–Co alloy in recent decades are summarized, hoping to provide valuable information for the development of Ni–Co alloy.

Synthesis of Various Metal/TiO2 Core/shell Nanorod Arrays

Abstract:We present a general approach to fabricate metal/TiO2 core/shell nanorod structures by two-step electrodeposition. Firstly, TiO2 nanotubes with uniform wall thickness are prepared in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes by electrodeposition. The wall thickness of the nanotubes could be easily controlled by modulating the deposition time, and their outer diameter and length are only limited by the channel diameter and the thickness of the AAO membranes, respectively. The nanotubes' tops prepared by this method are open, while the bottoms are connected directly with the Au film at the back of the AAO membranes. Secondly, Pd, Cu, and Fe elements are filled into the TiO2 nanotubes to form core/shell structures. The core/shell nanorods prepared by this two-step process are high density and free-standing, and their length is dependent on the deposition time.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a modified novel silica sol-gel process and explored the possibility, for the first time, to synthesize binary nanoalloy nanoparticles. We successfully prepared ultrafine Ni3Fe nanoparticles supported with carbon and silica via this simple one-pot reaction without H-2 reduction. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) investigations of the Ni3Fe nanoparticles show that the nanoparticles have a face-centered-cubic (fcc) crystal structure. The TEM images show that grain sizes of Ni3Fe nanoparticles have a narrow size distribution. Moreover, the grain size of the nanoparticles is not very sensitive to the elevated annealing temperature. The Ni3Fe nanoparticles exhibit typical superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature, and the blocking temperatures (T-B) are determined by the temperature-dependent magnetization (M-T curves) measurements. This novel silica sol-gel method is expected to have broad applications in synthesizing nanoalloy nanoparticles. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A novel hydrothermal coating process has been developed to deposit amorphous Ni(OH)2·H2O over octahedral α-Fe2O3 particles by treating aqueous dispersion of the preformed cores in Ni(NO3)2/CH3COONa solution. NiO(core)/Fe2O3(shell) composite particles were prepared by air sintering of the Ni(OH)2·H2O(shell)/Fe2O3(core) particles at 200–500°C for 1–6h. The changes of morphology, structure and weight of the hydrothermal and sintering products were studied by means of TEM, XRD, XPS, TG and IR analyzers. The nucleation and growth model was suggested for the non-isothermal decomposition of Ni(OH)2·H2O coatings and the kinetic equation was derived from the non-linear regression of the TG data. The activation in the thermal-decomposition process is 73.8kJmol−1 and the pre-exponential factor is 1.95×104s−1.

Abstract:Commercial nickel nanoparticles (Ni NPs) were directly converted to efficient electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction by urea-Ni solid powder pyrolysis, in which a Ni, N-co-doped graphite carbon shell wraps the Ni NPs in situ. 98.3% CO selectivity was realized with a current density of -20.2 mA cm-2 and an overpotential of 0.69 V.

Abstract:Fe-Co-Ni coating, a vital type of transition metal alloy, shows great potential in the field of hydrogen storage and magnetic materials. In this study, Fe-Co-Ni coatings were prepared on Cu substrates from a deep eutectic solution of choline chloride/2Urea (ChCl/2Urea) DES by electrodeposition. The effects of deposition potential on the morphology, chemical composition, crystal structure, corrosion resistance and magnetic properties of nanostructured Fe-Co-Ni coatings were investigated. The results revealed that the reduction process of Fe-Co-Ni alloy on the Cu electrode in ChCl/2Urea DES was irreversible three-dimensional instantaneous nucleation, which was controlled by diffusion. The surface morphology, microstructure, compose and crystallite size of the Fe-Ni-Co alloy were related to the deposition potential. The Fe content of the electrodeposited alloys showed a maximum of 48.17 at% at the applied potential of −1.3 V and a positive correlation was observed between the Fe content and electrodeposition potential in the investigated potential range. The nickel-rich coatings were obtained at high potential and iron-rich coatings were obtained at low potential. The less roughness, more compact grain and uniform flat Fe-Co-Ni coatings were prepared under a more negative potential. The Fe-Co-Ni coatings were composed of face-centered cube (fcc, NiFe) and body-centered cube crystals (bcc, FeCo). With the negative shift of deposition potential, the structure of Fe-Co-Ni coatings grew preferentially toward FeCo(110) and FeCo(211) crystal surfaces. The Fe-Co-Ni coatings prepared from ChCl/2Urea DES at different deposition potentials showed good corrosion resistance. Fe-Co-Ni coating that is produced at the deposition potential of −1.2 V, exhibited a more positive corrosion potential and obvious magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract:Air stable Co3Fe7-CoFe2O4 nanoparticles have been synthesized via one-step flame spray pyrolysis of a mixture of Fe/Co precursor solution under stronger reducing atmosphere. The as-synthesized nanoparticles with diameters of 20-80 nm showed a typical core shell structure and high stability for being one month in air, whose metallic Co3Fe7 cores were protected against oxidation by a surface shell of about 2-4 nm cobalt iron oxide (CoFe2O4). The ratio of metallic Fe/Co alloy nanoparticles was 7:3. The alloy nanoparticles exhibited enhanced saturation magnetization (126.1 emu/g), compared with flame sprayed iron nanoparticles with the same conditions. The formation process of metallic alloy nanoparticles with core-shell structure was investigated, which included three stages: flame combustion, reducing, and surface oxidation during the flame process. It is reckoned that such a continuous production approach is an effective way to produce the stable Co3Fe7 alloy nanoparticles with high saturation magnetization.

Abstract:Co-Ni films are widely used in electronics industry for their excellent magnetic, mechanical and electrical properties. In this work, the influence of substrate type and deposition parameters on the morphologies of electroplating Co-Ni nanostructures was investigated. It was found that scallop shell-like Co-Ni depositions could be fabricated on copper wafers. The tendency to form the scallop shell-like depositions increased with increase of deposition time and current density. While on silicon wafers, scallop shell-like Co-Ni depositions could not form. Only acupuncture-like nanostructures could be fabricated on silicon wafers at a high current density.

Abstract:A novel double-layer structural nanocomposite coating was prepared via one-step plasma electrolytic oxidation-synchronous deposition & sintering of nanoparticles (PEO-SDSN) technique under unique threshold conditions of concentration of added nanoparticles, electrolyte temperature, and applied voltage. The special discharges at the coating/electrolyte interface lead to the directional migration, deposition and sintering of organic (eg. PTFE) or inorganic (eg. SiC) nanoparticles, combined with the dynamic growth equilibrium of bottom oxide layer and outer nanoparticle deposition & sintering layer. Different from traditional PEO, the addition of nanoparticles creates interesting rising and falling changes in current and corresponding discharging characteristics. The underlined formation mechanism of the double-layer coating was detected by OES combined with discharging phenomena and coating structure evolution. Moreover, compared with the single PEO coating, the double-layer structural nanocomposite coating has better comprehensive performances, such as corrosion protection, and low and stable friction coefficient. The PEO-SDSN technique is energy saving, more importantly, it provides a brand-new fabrication strategy for a series of double-layer multifunctional coatings by tailoring the nanoparticles species. Eventually, the potential applications and guiding strategies of double-layer nanocomposite coating are presented.

Abstract:A noble metal (NM) can stabilize monolayer-dispersed surface oxide phases with metastable nature. The formed "oxide-on-metal" inverse catalyst presents better catalytic performance than the NM because of the introduction of coordinatively unsaturated cations at the oxide-metal boundaries. Here we demonstrate that an ultrathin NM layer grown on a non-NM core can impose the same constraint on the supported oxide as the bulk NM. Cu@Pt core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) decorated with FeO patches use much less Pt but exhibit performance similar to that of Pt NPs covered with surface FeO patches in the catalytic oxidation of CO. The "oxide-on-core@shell" inverse catalyst system may open a new avenue for the design of advanced nanocatalysts with decreased usage of noble metals.

Among many Ni-based coatings, NiMo coatings are widely used in various fields due to their excellent hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and electrocatalytic properties. Compared with other preparation techniques, the preparation of NiMo coatings by electrodeposition has the advantages of simplicity, moderate cost, and high efficiency. By selecting appropriate electrodeposition parameters, coatings with various properties can be obtained. In this review, the electrodeposition mechanism, electrodeposition parameters, and the properties of NiMo coatings are comprehensively discussed. The effects of electrodeposition parameters on the elemental content and current efficiency in NiMo coatings are also described in detail. Additionally, a summary is provided for the related content of heat treatment and energy field-assisted electrodeposition, emphasizing the potential applications of the latter in the preparation of NiMo composite coatings. This review summarizes and evaluates the previous related literature reports, aiming to guide the development of NiMo alloys and composite coatings with better performance.
