Abstract:In this work, BiVO4-based solid solutions, Bi0.5Y0.5VO4, were prepared via the MOF-derived method initially. The physical and chemical properties of the Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 samples were characterized by XRD, Raman spectra, XPS, HRTEM, element mapping, UV-vis DRS spectrum, TRPL and electrochemical analysis. The results showed that Y sources will be beneficial for the generation of tetragonal phase BiVO4, which made Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 samples constructed by tetragonal Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 and amorphous Bi0.5Y0.5VO4. The ratio of the tetragonal Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 was changed if the variation of the calcined time increased, which could be ascribed to the conversion of the amorphous Bi0.5Y0.5VO4. Consequently, photocatalytic overall water splitting property was enhanced and the results exhibited that Bi0.5Y0.5VO4-10 h samples exhibited the best performance with a rate of 124.2 mu mol H-2 and 61.7 mu mol O-2 per hour. The reason could be attributed to the variation of twisting degree, which thus influencing the internal electric field of the materials. More importantly, after metallic Pt particles as co-catalysts deposited, the ratio of H-2:O-2 was decreased. It could be proposed that the electric field shield effect will emerge to regulate the interfacial internal electric field further, which could play an essential role in the procedure of photocatalytic water splitting, especially for the reduction procedure.
Strain-Induced Photocatalytic H2 Production over BiVO4 in Pure Water without Any Cocatalyst

Abstract:In this study, BiVO4 nanosheets (BiVO4-NS) were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. It is found that sonication-induced strain can effectively promote the H2 production over BiVO4-NS in the presence of pure water without any cocatalysts. With the assistance of the sonication, the H2 production over BiVO4-NS is 1.344 mmol·g-1 after 3 h simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 24.8 times higher than that of BiVO4-NS without sonication (0.054 mmol·g-1). In addition, the products of water oxidation are determined to be hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, BiVO4-NS also shows obviously enhanced photoactivity than that of the commercially available BiVO4 nanoparticles (BiVO4-C). The improved photoactivity of BiVO4-NS is attributed to the effective charge separation and low charge transfer resistance. The underlying mechanism of sonication-promoted water splitting is investigated by a variety of controlled experiments. The results show that ultrasonic waves can produce obvious strain inside the sample, which results in lattice distortion of BiVO4. Therefore, the conduction band of BiVO4 is obviously negative shifted, which is beneficial for H2 production. In addition, the strain in BiVO4 also produces local polarization of the sample, which effectively promotes the charge transfer and separation process. It is hoped that our study could provide a new strategy for achieving efficient photocatalytic water splitting.
Engineering interfacial band bending over bismuth vanadate/carbon nitride by work function regulation for efficient solar-driven water splitting

Abstract:Nature-inspired artificial Z-scheme photocatalyst offers great promise in solar overall water splitting, but its rational design, construction and interfacial charge transfer mechanism remain ambiguous. Here, we design an approach of engineering interfacial band bending via work function regulation, which realizes directional charge transfer at interface and affords direct Z-scheme pathway. Taking BiVO4 as prototype, its oxygen vacancy concentration is reduced by slowing down the crystallization rate, thereby changing the work function from smaller to larger than that of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN). Consequently, the photoinduced charge transfer pathway of BiVO4/PCN is switched from type-II to Z-scheme as evidenced by synchronous illuminated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Specifically, the direct Z-scheme BiVO4/PCN shows superior photocatalytic performance in water splitting. This work provides deep insights and guidelines to constructing heterojunction photocatalysts for solar utilization.
Enhanced Twisting Degree Assisted Overall Water Splitting on a Novel Nano-Dodecahedron BiVO4-based Heterojunction

Abstract:A novel nano-dodecahedron Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 solid solution with a diameter ranging from 20 to 50 nm has been prepared initially. The sample was characterized by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, element mapping, XPS, UV vis spectrum, Raman spectra, Mott-Schottky and XPS valence band analysis to reveal its properties. Photocatalytic experiment exhibited that H-Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 exhibited a much superior activity than the P-Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 among overall water splitting. The enhanced twisting degree in hetero-Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 (H-Bi0.5Y0.5VO4), which reconstructed the internal electric field and thus promoting the photogenerated carriers migrating directionally to form the direct Z-scheme heterojunction, should be responsible for the improvement of the photocatalytic performances. Furthermore, it also contributed to the morphology edge formation, which could be another critical factor for improving the photocarriers separation efficiency after simulating the rules of charge distribution. Additionally, results also indicated that the co-catalysts Rh@Rh2O3 could unlock a new charge transfer channel in the procedure of photocatalytic overall water splitting.
Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting over PbTiO3 Modulated by Oxygen Vacancy and Ferroelectric Polarization

Abstract:Ferroelectric materials hold great promise in the field of photocatalytic water splitting due to their spontaneous polarization that sets up an inherent internal field for the spatial separation of photogenerated charges. The ferroelectric polarization, however, is generally accompanied by some intrinsic defects, particularly oxygen vacancies, whose impact upon photocatalysis is far from being fully understood and modulated. Here, we have studied the role of oxygen vacancies over the photocatalytic behavior of single-domain PbTiO3 through a combination of theoretical and experimental viewpoints. Our results indicate that the oxygen vacancies in the negatively polarized facet (001) are active sites for water oxidation into O2, while the defect-free sites prefer H2O2 as the oxidation product. The apparent quantum yield at 435 nm for photocatalytic overall water splitting with PbTiO3/Rh/Cr2O3 is determined to be 0.025%, which is remarkable for single undoped metal oxide-based photocatalysts. Furthermore, the strong correlation among oxygen vacancies, polarization strength, and photocatalytic activity is properly reflected by charge separation conditions in the single-domain PbTiO3. This work clarifies the crucial role of oxygen vacancies during photocatalytic reactions of PbTiO3, which provides a useful guide to the design of efficient ferroelectric photocatalysts and their water redox reaction pathways.
Simultaneous Structural and Electronic Engineering on Bi- and Rh-co-doped SrTiO3 for Promoting Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Activating metal ion‐doped oxides as visible‐light‐responsive photocatalysts requires intricate structural and electronic engineering, a task with inherent challenges. In this study, we employed a solid (template)‐molten (dopants) reaction to synthesize Bi‐ and Rh‐codoped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:Bi,Rh) particles. Our investigation reveals that SrTiO3:Bi,Rh manifests as single‐crystalline particles in a core (undoped)/shell (doped) structure. Furthermore, it exhibits a well‐stabilized Rh3+ energy state for visible‐light response without introducing undesirable trapping states. This precisely engineered structure and electronic configuration promoted the generation of high‐concentration and long‐lived free electrons, as well as facilitated their transfer to cocatalysts for H2 evolution. Impressively, SrTiO3:Bi,Rh achieved an exceptional apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 18.9% at 420 nm, setting a new benchmark among Rh‐doped‐based SrTiO3 materials. Furthermore, when integrated into an all‐solid‐state Z‐scheme system with Mo‐doped BiVO4 and reduced graphene oxide, SrTiO3:Bi,Rh enabled water splitting with an AQY of 7.1% at 420 nm. This work underscores the significance of simultaneous structural and electronic engineering and introduces the solid‐molten reaction as a viable approach for this purpose.

Abstract:BiOBr nanosheets with highly reactive {001} facets exposed were selectively synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The inner strain in the BiOBr nanosheets has been tuned continuously by the pH value. The photocatalytic performance of BiOBr in dye degradation can be manipulated by the strain effect. The low-strain BiOBr nanosheets show improved photocatalytic activity. Density functional calculations suggest that strain can modify the band structure and symmetry in BiOBr. The enhanced photocatalytic activity in low-strain BiOBr nanosheets is due to improved charge separation attributable to a highly dispersive band structure with an indirect band gap.
Photocatalytic Water Splitting on BiVO4: Balanced Charge-Carrier Consumption and Selective Redox Reaction

Abstract:Surficial redox reactions play an essential role in photocatalytic water splitting, and are closely related to the surface properties of a specific photocatalyst. In this work, using monoclinic BiVO4 decahedral single crystals as a model photocatalyst, we report on the interrelationship between the photocatalytic activity and the surficial reaction sites for charge-carrier consumption. By controlled hydrothermal synthesis, the ratio of {010} to {110} facets on BiVO4, which respectively serve as reductive and oxidative sites, is carefully tailored. Our results show that superior photocatalytic water oxidation could be obtained on BiVO4 decahedrons with a medium ratio of reductive/oxidative sites and that efficient overall water splitting could be achieved via further modification of appropriate cocatalysts in Z-scheme system. The excellent photocatalytic performance is attributed to the accelerated selective redox reactions by realizing balanced charge-carrier consumption, which provides insightful guidance for prospering photocatalytic reactions in energy conversion.
Reconstructing Ferroelectric Polarization Screening of PbTiO3 by Epitaxial SrTiO3 for Efficient Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:A large depolarization field in single-domain PbTiO3 is anticipated to drive the spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers and enable potential active sites for photocatalytic overall water splitting reaction. However, the negatively polarized surface usually cannot provide sufficient active sites for water oxidation to oxygen because of lacking oxygen vacancies, inevitably hindering photocatalytic water splitting reaction. Here, the ferroelectric polarization screening is reconstructed by a heteroepitaxial SrTiO3 film on the positively polarized surface of PbTiO3 nanoplates to generate abundant oxygen vacancies on the negatively polarized surface as active sites for water oxidation. Moreover, it is experimentally and theoretically revealed that the epitaxial SrTiO3 layer on the positively polarized surface is also beneficial for good dispersion of cocatalyst and the formation of low Schottky barrier height at the interface between the heterostructure and the cocatalyst for efficient electron transfer. Compared with pristine PbTiO3, the obtained PbTiO3/SrTiO3 heteroepitaxial structure with the simultaneous regulation of positively and negatively polarized surfaces delivered a greatly enhanced photocatalytic overall water splitting with stoichiometric ratio (2:1) of hydrogen and oxygen evolution by a factor of 15 times. These findings might open up a new avenue for the design of ferroelectric photocatalysts with excellent activity.

Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water splitting is a promising environmental friendly technique to convert solar energy into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). Here, BiVO4 ultrathin nanosheets is found to disintegrate pure water into H2 and O2 simultaneously under simulated solar light irradiation without sacrificial reagents. And a novel 2D/2D BiVO4/Ti3C2 composites is successfully synthesized through electrostatic interaction between BiVO4 and Ti3C2 nanosheets. Because the unique 2D/2D heterojunction possesses large interface contact area and quite short charge transport distance, BiVO4/Ti3C2 displays much higher photoexcited carrier transfer and separation efficiency and ultimately exhibits remarkable photocatalytic overall water splitting activity. This work may provide the first experimental confirmation of ultrathin BiVO4 nanosheets with an ability of photocatalytic overall water splitting, and the 2D/2D combination between BiVO4 and Ti3C2 is an effective way for further improving the activity, which may provide guidance for designing efficient water splitting photocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:Abstract Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) has been widely investigated as a photocatalyst or photoanode for solar water splitting, but its activity is hindered by inefficient cocatalysts and limited understanding of the underlying mechanism. Here we demonstrate significantly enhanced water oxidation on the particulate BiVO 4 photocatalyst via in situ facet-selective photodeposition of dual-cocatalysts that exist separately as metallic Ir nanoparticles and nanocomposite of FeOOH and CoOOH (denoted as FeCoO x ), as revealed by advanced techniques. The mechanism of water oxidation promoted by the dual-cocatalysts is experimentally and theoretically unraveled, and mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of the spatially separated dual-cocatalysts (Ir, FeCoO x ) on both interface charge separation and surface catalysis. Combined with the H 2 -evolving photocatalysts, we finally construct a Z-scheme overall water splitting system using [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3−/4− as the redox mediator, whose apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm and solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency are optimized to be 12.3% and 0.6%, respectively.

Synthesis and characterization of visible-light-responding Bi0.5La0.5VO4 solid solution for photocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:Bi0.5La0.5VO4 solid solution was synthesized by a solid state reaction at high temperature and characterized by X-ray diffraction. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and scanning electron microscopy. The photocatalyst had it) appropriate band gap energy 2.70 eV, corresponding to the absorption edge of 470 nm. Furthermore, Bi0.5La0.5VO4 was found to act as a photocatalyst for water splitting under UV light and visible light when loading Pt, RuO2, Pt-Cr2O3, Rh, and so on. Among these photocatalysts, Pt-Cr2O3/BLV exhibited the best photocatalytic property. The amounts of produced hydrogen and oxygen were about 28.86 and 14.34 mu mol/h under irradiation lambda > 300 nm light, respectively. This study indicated that the formation of solid solution was a feasible method to adjust the conduction band and valence band to obtain a visible-light-driven photocatalyst.
Refined Z-scheme Charge Transfer in Facet-Selective BiVO4/Au/CdS Heterostructure for Solar Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Artificial Z-scheme systems that mimic natural photosynthesis are well applicable to photocatalytic overall water splitting for hydrogen (H-2) production free of electricity. However, it commonly confronts low efficiency with huge challenge of steering charge transfer between H-2 evolution photocatalyst (HEP) and oxygen evolution photocatalyst (OEP). Here we report an all-solid-state Z-scheme system with facet-selective construction that favors charge spatial separation toward HEP and OEP for high efficient solar overall water splitting. Based on the spontaneous separation of photogenerated electrons and holes on the different crystal facets of BiVO4 decahedra, we successively implemented the selective depositions of Au and CdS nanoparticles (NPs) onto the electron-rich {010} facets, to fortify the Z-scheme charge transfer between BiVO4 and CdS across Au mediators upon two-step photoexcitation. In-situ photoelectron dynamics ascertains Z-scheme model of resultant BiVO4/Au/CdS, which enables an impressive overall water splitting with stoichiometric H-2 and O-2 evolution rates of 281 and 138 mu mol g(-1)h(-1), respectively, under 1 sun irradiation (100 mW cm(-2 ), AM 1.5G) without using any sacrificial agents and external bias. Abstract:Strontium Titanate has a typical perovskite structure with advantages of low cost and photochemical stability. However, the wide bandgap and rapid recombination of electrons and holes limited its application in photocatalysis. In this work, a SrTiO3 material with surface oxygen vacancies was synthesized via carbon reduction under a high temperature. It was successfully applied for photocatalytic overall water splitting to produce clean hydrogen energy under visible light irradiation without any sacrificial reagent for the first time. The photocatalytic overall water splitting ability of the as-prepared SrTiO3-C950 is attributed to the surface oxygen vacancies that can make suitable energy levels for visible light response, improving the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers.

Solar-Light-Driven Pure Water Splitting with Ultrathin BiOCl Nanosheets

Abstract:A suitable photocatalyst for overall water splitting has been produced by overcoming the disadvantage of the band structure in bulk BiOCl by reducing the thickness to the quantum scale. The ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets with surface/subsurface defects realized the solar-driven pure water splitting in the absence of any co-catalysts or sacrificial agent. These surface defects cannot only shift both the valence band and conduction band upwards for band-gap narrowing but also promote charge-carrier separation. The amount of defects in the outer layer surface of BiOCl results in an enhancement of carrier density and faster charge transport. First-principles calculations provide clear evidence that the formation of surface oxygen vacancies is easier for the ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets than for its thicker counterpart. These defects can serve as active sites to effectively adsorb and dissociate H2 O molecules, resulting in a significantly improved water-splitting performance.
Novel photocatalyst of V-based solid solutions for overall water splitting

Abstract:A series of mixed oxide (BYV) photocatalysts BixY1-xVO4 were prepared by solid state reaction. When the composition was below x = 0.65, BYV were of single phase and of zircon-type structure and can be regarded as solid solutions of YVO4 and BiVO4 within the same structure. All the BYV solid solutions were proved for the first time to be effective photocatalysts based on V with d(0) electron configuration for overall water splitting under UV light. 0.2 g Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 with cocatalyst showed the highest photocatalytic activity (402 mu mol h (1) H-2 and 196 mu mol h(-1) O-2) among all the samples, about 25 times that of YVO4. Under visible light irradiation, BYV solid solutions also performed photocatalytic activity to produce H-2 and O-2 from sacrificial reagent solutions. The photocatalytic activity of BYV solid solutions was effectively improved by increasing calcination temperature from 1073 to 1173 K. Band structure calculation by using the WIEN2K code indicated that incorporation of Bi in YVO4 caused a reduction of the band gap and dispersion of the conduction band of BYV solid solution due to the interaction between Bi6s/6p and VO4, which was demonstrated to be the major factor for effective activity of BYV solid solutions.

Abstract:A series of metal oxide solid solutions Bi1-xDyxVO4 and Bi0.5M0.5VO4 (M = La, Sm, Nd, Gd, Eu, Y) were synthesized by solid state reaction at high temperature and characterized by XRD, UV-vis DRS, BET, SEM. Bi1-xDyxVO4 showed two crystal structures with the component content. For 0.3 <= x <= 1.0, the structure was tetragonal type, while that was monoclinic when x = 0. For 0.1 <= x < 0.3, tetragonal and monoclinic structures had been observed. Bi1-xDyxVO4 solid solutions of tetragonal type could split water into H-2 and O-2 simultaneously when loaded with 0.3 wt% Pt and 1 wt% Pt-Cr2O3 respectively as cocatalyst. Among these catalysts, Bi0.5Dy0.5VO4 showed the best photocatalytic activity for water splitting under UV light irradiation. Besides, Bi0.5M0.5VO4 (M = La, Sm, Nd, Gd, Eu, Y) were also prepared and discovered to be of tetragonal type as same as Bi0.5Dy0.5VO4. They performed high photocatalytic activities of splitting pure water into H-2 and O-2 under UV light irradiation when loaded with 1 wt% Pt-Cr2O3. The activities of Bi0.5M0.5VO4 (M = Dy, La, Sm, Nd, Gd, Eu, Y) solid solutions indicated band-gap engineering of metal oxide solid solutions was the feasible method to obtain a photocatalyst for overall water splitting. Abstract:Strong metal -support interaction (SMSI) has been widely discussed for activity promotion of heterogeneous catalysis, but the effect of SMSI on photocatalysis remains unclear. Here, we employ bismuth vanadate (BiVO4)-supported iridium (denoted as Ir/BVO) as a model photocatalyst to observe highly dispersed iridium overlayers as well as moderate SMSI effect between Ir and BiVO4. It is revealed that charge separation on the Ir/BVO can be remarkably promoted by the SMSI effect. Together with the right distribution of dual cocatalysts (Ir and IrO2) achieved by a simple photoinduction, the water oxidation activity on optimal Ir/BVO is about 75 times higher than that on pristine BVO. Finally, we construct an effective redoxdriven Z -scheme overall water splitting system with a benchmark apparent quantum efficiency of 16.9% under visible light irradiation of 420 G 10 nm at room temperature. Our work extends the application of SMSI to photocatalysis to provide an alternative way of promoting photocatalytic activity.
Tungsten induced defects control on BiVO4 photoanodes for enhanced solar water splitting performance and photocorrosion resistance

Abstract:The stabilization of semiconductor against photocorrosion has become one of the most essential targets in photoelectrochemical water splitting. Herein, a research of three mixing enhancement strategies of WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction, W doping, and oxygen vacancy formation can be made to incorporate into such a nanostructure during the preparation of BiVO4 in terms of PEC performance improvement. The WO3 layer not only facilitated the electron transfer, but importantly, was used as a diffusion source for W doping which brought oxygen vacancies on the bulk material. Moreover, the introduction of different W doping profiles,- bottom, middle, and top, all electrodes exhibited a photo-activation character with the improved photocurrent and the negative shift of onset potential. The bottom W doping led to the most notable enhancement in charge separation efficiency on BiVO4 electrode, which yielded the close photocurrent densities of ∼4.4 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE under front and back 1 sun illumination. More importantly, the cocatalyst-free W:BiVO4-Ov photoanode present a favorable stability during 25 h test applied at 1.0 VRHE. By experimental and theoretical arguments, it demonstrated that the multiple collaborative strategies shed light on designing efficient and stable photoelectrodes for solar energy conversion.

Abstract:p-type tetragonal zircon BiVO4 nanocrystal photocathodes (P-BVO) and n-type monoclinic scheelite BiVO4 nanoporous photoanodes (N-BVO) are prepared by a hydrothermal method and an electrochemical synthesis method, respectively. Pt nanoparticles and cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) as co-catalysts are loaded by an electrodeposition way to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of BiVO4 (BVO) electrodes. After modification, a monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of P-BVO/Pt at 360 nm is improved by 2.2 times, and the highest IPCE of N-BVO/Co-Pi at 440 nm is increased by 1.7 times. The calculated electron-hole separation yield and the charge carrier injection yield of N-BVO/Co-Pi at 1.23 V-RHE are further improved to 80% and 86%, respectively. The surface modification also results in the latest approximate to 0.2% half-cell solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency (HC-STH) for a P-BVO/Pt photocathode and a higher approximate to 1.16% half-cell applied bias photon-to-current conversion efficiency (ABPE) for an N-BVO/Co-Pi photoanode. Furthermore, the prepared photoelectrodes are proved to have excellent stability for water splitting. Above all, a tandem-type PEC cell containing the newly developed P-BVO/Pt photocathode and an N-BVO/Co-Pi photoanode is built for the first time, which evolves H-2 and O-2 at a stoichiometric ratio of 2:1 with a bias-free STH of 0.14%.
