Abstract:The kagome lattice system has been identified as a fertile ground for the emergence of a number of new quantum states,including superconductivity,quantum spin liquids,and topological electronic states.This has attracted significant interest within the field of condensed matter physics.Here,we present the observation of an anomalous Hall effect in an iron-based kagome antiferromagnet LuFe 6 Sn 6 ,which implies a non-zero Berry curvature in this compound.By means of extensive magnetic measurements,a high Neel temperature,T N =552 K,and a spin reorientation behavior were identified and a simple temperature-field phase diagram was constructed.Furthermore,this compound was found to exhibit a large Sommerfeld coefficient of γ=87 mJ·mol -1 ·K -2 ,suggesting the presence of a strong electronic correlation effect.Our research indicates that LuFe 6 Sn 6 is an intriguing compound that may exhibit magnetism,strong correlation,and topological states.

Abstract:We predict by first-principles calculations that thin films of a Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 magnetic topological insulator have gapless nonchiral edge states coexisting with the chiral edge state. Such gapless nonchiral states are not immune to backscattering, which would explain dissipative transport in the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state observed in this system experimentally. Here, we study the edge transport with both chiral and nonchiral states by the Landauer-Büttiker formalism and find that the longitudinal resistance is nonzero, whereas Hall resistance is quantized to h/e2. In particular, the longitudinal resistance can be greatly reduced by adding an extra floating probe even if it is not used, while the Hall resistance remains at the quantized value. We propose several transport experiments to detect the dissipative nonchiral edge channels. These results will facilitate the realization of pure dissipationless transport of QAH states in magnetic topological insulators.

Abstract:When an electron with well-defined momentum tunnels into a nonchiral Luttinger liquid, it breaks up into two separate wave packets that carry fractional charges and move in opposite directions. A direct observation of this phenomenon has proven elusive, mainly due to single-particle and plasmon backscattering caused by measurement probes. This paper theoretically introduces two topological insulator devices that are naturally suited for detecting fractional charges and their velocities directly and in a noninvasive fashion.

Abstract:Zitterbewegung is an inherent hallmark of the Dirac equation which arises from the superposition between the positive and negative energy part of the spinor states. This exotic quantum phenomenon is only observed very recently in traped ions and cold atom systems, but still a challenging task for electron systems. Here we present a general theory about the electron Zitterbewegung in a topological insulator in the presence of an in-plane electric field. We demonstrate theoretically that the topological edge states in topological insulators origin from electron Zitterbewegung and the quantum spin Hall effect and quantum anomalous Hall effect can be viewed as a manifestation of anomalous electron Zitterbewegung.
Electrical probes of the non-Abelian spin liquid in Kitaev materials

Abstract:Recent thermal-conductivity measurements evidence a magnetic-field-induced non-Abelian spin liquid phase in the Kitaev material $\alpha$-$\mathrm{RuCl}_{3}$. Although the platform is a good Mott insulator, we propose experiments that electrically probe the spin liquid's hallmark chiral Majorana edge state and bulk anyons, including their exotic exchange statistics. We specifically introduce circuits that exploit interfaces between electrically active systems and Kitaev materials to `perfectly' convert electrons from the former into emergent fermions in the latter---thereby enabling variations of transport probes invented for topological superconductors and fractional quantum Hall states. Along the way we resolve puzzles in the literature concerning interacting Majorana fermions, and also develop an anyon-interferometry framework that incorporates nontrivial energy-partitioning effects. Our results illuminate a partial pathway towards topological quantum computation with Kitaev materials.

Abstract:Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators have unique electronic properties, comprising a band gap in their 2D interior and 1D spin‐polarized edge states in which current flows ballistically. In scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), the edge states manifest themselves as an enhanced local density of states (LDOS). However, there is a significant research gap between the observation of edge states in nanoscale spectroscopy, and the detection of ballistic transport in edge channels which typically relies on transport experiments with microscale lithographic contacts. Here, few‐layer films of the 3D topological insulator (BixSb1−x$_{1-x}$)2Te3 are studied, for which a topological transition to a 2D topological QSH insulator phase has been proposed. Indeed, an edge state in the LDOS is observed within the band gap. Yet, in nanoscale transport experiments with a four‐tip STM, two‐quintuple‐layer films do not exhibit a ballistic conductance in the edge channels and thus no QSH edge states. This demonstrates that the detection of edge states in spectroscopy can be misleading with regard to the identification of a QSH phase. In contrast, nanoscale multi‐tip transport experiments are a robust method for effectively pinpointing ballistic edge channels, as opposed to trivial edge states, in quantum materials. In the present work, the conductance of quantum spin Hall edge states is probed using a multi‐tip scanning tunneling microscope as a “multimeter on the nanoscale.” While it is found that in the currently analyzed system no highly conducting edge states are detected, a route how to identify ballistic edge channels, the hallmark property of QSH phase, is demonstrated unequivocally.

Abstract:We propose a set of thermoelectric experiments based on Aharonov-Bohm interferometry to probe Majorana bound states (MBS), which are generated in 2D topological insulators (TI) in the presence of superconducting and ferromagnetic correlations via the proximity effect. The existence and nature (coupled or uncoupled) of these MBS can be determined by studying the charge and heat transport, specifically, the behavior of various thermoelectric coefficients like the Seebeck coefficient, Peltier coefficient, thermal conductance, and violations of Wiedemann-Franz law as a function of the Fermi energy and Aharonov-Bohm flux piercing the TI ring with the embedded MBS.

Probing the Percolation in the Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator

Abstract:The percolation plays an essential role in the physics of plateau transition, localization, and breakdown in quantum Hall (QH) systems. In practice, it always exists probably due to sample imperfections and has to be addressed before realizing the full potentials of topological electronics and qubits. Here, we investigate the cause, distribution, and number of the percolation in a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator of an anti-Hall bar geometry with two perimeters, which allows for probing both the inter- and intra-perimeter percolations by injecting currents into either or both perimeters. We discover the dual-QAH effect with opposite chiralities from these two perimeters, which exhibits linear modulations by the currents applied to both perimeters. By solving the formulation of such modulations with the Landauer–Büttiker formalism, the distribution and number of the inter-perimeter percolative channels could be identified. Strikingly, a dissipative constituent is detected in the transport of the QAH state, as revealed by the linear scalings in longitudinal conductivities versus the sum of currents injected to both perimeters, similar to that in the trivial-insulating state. Such a behavior unveils the quasi-2D nature of the intra-perimeter percolation, which superimposes onto and perturbs the dissipationless chiral edge transport. The formation of percolations is ascribed to the joint effect of the electric field, finite conductivity, and sample imperfections.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally the existence of two different regimes of electron transport in the transition regions between Hall plateaus at high magnetic fields. One regime is found in the high-magnetic-field tail of a Shubnikov-de Haas peak, while the other one is in the remaining magnetic-field region of the peak. The magnetoresistance measured in the two regimes is shown to arise from different physical origins. The experiment supports the recent theory that predicts the existence of a percolating metallic electron system at high magnetic fields.

Abstract:Advancements in materials synthesis have been key to unveil the quantum nature of electronic properties in solids by providing experimental reference points for a correct theoretical description. Here, we report hidden transport phenomena emerging in the ultraclean limit of the archetypical correlated electron system SrVO 3 . The low temperature, low magnetic field transport was found to be dominated by anisotropic scattering, whereas, at high temperature, we find a yet undiscovered phase that exhibits clear deviations from the expected Landau Fermi liquid, which is reminiscent of strange-metal physics in materials on the verge of a Mott transition. Further, the high sample purity enabled accessing the high magnetic field transport regime at low temperature, which revealed an anomalously high Hall coefficient. Taken with the strong anisotropic scattering, this presents a more complex picture of SrVO 3 that deviates from a simple Landau Fermi liquid. These hidden transport anomalies observed in the ultraclean limit prompt a theoretical reexamination of this canonical correlated electron system beyond the Landau Fermi liquid paradigm, and more generally serves as an experimental basis to refine theoretical methods to capture such nontrivial experimental consequences emerging in correlated electron systems.

Probing Transport in Quantum Many-Fermion Simulations Via Quantum Loop Topography

Abstract:Quantum many-fermion systems give rise to diverse states of matter that often reveal themselves in distinctive transport properties. While some of these states can be captured by microscopic models accessible to numerical exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations, it nevertheless remains challenging to numerically access their transport properties. Here we demonstrate that quantum loop topography (QLT) can be used to directly probe transport by machine learning current-current correlations in imaginary time. We showcase this approach by studying the emergence of superconducting fluctuations in the negative-U Hubbard model and a spin-fermion model for a metallic quantum critical point. For both sign-free models, we find that the QLT approach detects a change in transport in very good agreement with their established phase diagrams. These proof-of-principle calculations combined with the numerical efficiency of the QLT approach point a way to identify hitherto elusive transport phenomena such as non-Fermi liquids using machine learning algorithms.

Abstract:The scaling physics of quantum Hall transport in optimized topological insulators with a plateau precision of ~1/1000 e2/h is considered. Two exponential scaling regimes are observed in temperature-dependent transport dissipation, one of which accords with thermal activation behavior with a gap of 2.8 meV (> 20 K), the other being attributed to variable range hopping (1-20 K). Magnetic field-driven plateau-to-plateau transition gives scaling relations of (dR$_{xy}$/dB)$^{max}$ \propto T$^{-\kappa}$ and \DeltaB$^{-1}$ \propto T$^{-\kappa}$ with a consistent exponent of \kappa ~ 0.2, which is half the universal value for a conventional two-dimensional electron gas. This is evidence of percolation assisted by quantum tunneling, and reveals the dominance of electron-electron interaction of the topological surface states.

Abstract:Characterizing the nature of hydrodynamical transport properties in quantum dynamics provides valuable insights into the fundamental understanding of exotic non-equilibrium phases of matter. Experimentally simulating infinite-temperature transport on large-scale complex quantum systems is of considerable interest. Here, using a controllable and coherent superconducting quantum simulator, we experimentally realize the analog quantum circuit, which can efficiently prepare the Haar-random states, and probe spin transport at infinite temperature. We observe diffusive spin transport during the unitary evolution of the ladder-type quantum simulator with ergodic dynamics. Moreover, we explore the transport properties of the systems subjected to strong disorder or a tilted potential, revealing signatures of anomalous subdiffusion in accompany with the breakdown of thermalization. Our work demonstrates a scalable method of probing infinite-temperature spin transport on analog quantum simulators, which paves the way to study other intriguing out-of-equilibrium phenomena from the perspective of transport.

Abstract:The quantized version of the anomalous Hall effect has been predicted to occur in magnetic topological insulators, but the experimental realization has been challenging. Here, we report the observation of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in thin films of Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3, a magnetic topological insulator. At zero magnetic field, the gate-tuned anomalous Hall resistance reaches the predicted quantized value of h/e^2,accompanied by a considerable drop of the longitudinal resistance. Under a strong magnetic field, the longitudinal resistance vanishes whereas the Hall resistance remains at the quantized value. The realization of the QAH effect may lead to the development of low-power-consumption electronics.
Probing Fermi sea topology by Andreev state transport

Abstract:We show that the topology of the Fermi sea of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is reflected in the ballistic Landauer transport along a long and narrow Josephson $\pi$-junction that proximitizes the 2DEG. The low-energy Andreev states bound to the junction are shown to exhibit a dispersion that is sensitive to the Euler characteristic of the Fermi sea ($\chi_F$). We highlight two important relations: one connects the electron/hole nature of Andreev states to the convex/concave nature of Fermi surface critical points, and one relates these critical points to $\chi_F$. We then argue that the transport of Andreev states leads to a quantized conductance that probes $\chi_F$. An experiment is proposed to measure this effect, from which we predict an $I$-$V$ characteristic that not only captures the topology of Fermi sea in metals, but also resembles the rectification effect in diodes. Finally, we evaluate the feasibility of measuring this quantized response in graphene, InAs and HgTe 2DEGs.

Abstract:Identifying experimental probes capable of diagnosing extreme quantum behavior is widely regarded as one of the foremost challenges in modern condensed matter physics. Here, we propose a novel approach for detecting chiral Kitaev spin liquid states through measurements of the local dynamical spin structure factor on the boundary using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We specifically focus on unpaired ("dangling") Majorana fermions, which naturally emerge along boundaries of Kitaev spin liquids, and can serve as indicators of chiral boundary modes under broad conditions, thereby offering a clear signature of these exotic quantum states.
