Abstract:Demands for engineering thermal transport properties are ever increasing for a wide range of modern microand nanodevices and materials-based energy technologies. In particular, there is a severe situation due to the rapid progress in the synthesis and processing of materials and devices with structural characteristic length on the nanometer scales, which are comparable or even smaller than the intrinsic length scales (such as mean free path and wavelength) of basic energy carriers (such as phonons, electrons, and photons). Although advanced approaches for controlling the electronic and photonic transport have been proposed in the past decades, progress on controlling lattice vibrations (i.e., the phonons) is still far behind. Gaps between the fundamental understandings of the behavior of the basic energy carriers at small scales and the technological demands still remain, particularly from a computer modeling point of view. Herewith, we give a perspective of the computational approaches for predicting the thermal transport properties of low-dimensional materials and nanostructures, which are mainly sorted into three categories: empirical molecular dynamics, anharmonic lattice dynamics based Boltzmann transport equation, and Landauer theory. The advantage and disadvantage of each method are discussed and some possible solutions are suggested. The discussion is focused on fully and accurately characterizing the mode-level phonon behavior, possible all-order phonon scattering process, and incorporation of realistic nanostructures. Moreover, emerging challenges of phonon coupling effects, such as electron−phonon, phonon−photon, and phonon−magnon coupling, are also discussed. We expect that this perspective will stimulate future research in computer modeling of micro-/nanoscale heat transfer beyond traditional phonons.

Quantum thermometry with single molecules in portable nanoprobes

Abstract:Understanding heat transport is relevant to develop efficient strategies for thermal management in microelectronics for instance, as well as for fundamental science purposes. However, measuring temperatures in nanostructured environments and in cryogenic conditions remains a challenging task, that requires both high sentitivity and a non-invasive approach. Here we present a portable nanothermometer based on a molecular two-level quantum system that operates in the 3 - 30 K temperature range, with excellent temperature and spatial resolutions on the order of mK and $\mu$m, respectively. We validate the performance of this molecular thermometer on nanostructures, by estimating the thermal conductivity of a patterned silicon membrane. In addition, we demonstrate the two-dimensional temperature mapping of a patterned surface via the simultaneous spectroscopy of all thermometers deposited on a sample. These results demonstrate the potential of this molecular thermometer to explore thermal properties and related phenomena at cryogenic temperatures.

Abstract:Electrical generation of heat in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and subsequent thermal transport into the surroundings can critically affect the design, operation, and reliability of electronic and optoelectronic devices based on these materials. Here we investigate such heat generation and transport characteristics in perfectly aligned, horizontal arrays of SWNTs integrated into transistor structures. We present quantitative assessments of local thermometry at individual SWNTs in these arrays, evaluated using scanning Joule expansion microscopy. Measurements at different applied voltages reveal electronic behaviors, including metallic and semiconducting responses, spatial variations in diameter or chirality, and localized defect sites. Analytical models, validated by measurements performed on different device structures at various conditions, enable accurate, quantitative extraction of temperature distributions at the level of individual SWNTs. Using current equipment, the spatial resolution and temperature precision are as good as ∼100 nm and ∼0.7 K, respectively.

Abstract:Thermal management plays an important role in miniaturized and integrated nanoelectronic devices, where finding ways to enable efficient heat-dissipation can be critical. 2D materials, especially graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), are generally regarded as ideal materials for thermal management due to their high inherent thermal conductivity. In this paper, a new method is reported, which can be used to characterize thermal transport in 2D materials. The separation of pumping from detection can obtain the temperature at different distances from the heat source, which makes it possible to study the heat distribution of 2D materials. Using this method, the thermal conductivity of graphene and molybdenum disulfide is measured, and the thermal diffusion for different shapes of graphene is explored. It is found that thermal transport in graphene changes when the surrounding environment changes. In addition, thermal transport is restricted at the boundary. These processes are accurately simulated using the finite element method, and the simulated results agree well with the experiment. Furthermore, by depositing a layer of h-BN on graphene, the heat-dissipation characteristics of graphene become tunable. This study introduces and describes a new method to investigate and optimize thermal management in 2D materials.

Abstract:Transport measurement, which applies an electric field and studies the migration of charged particles, i.e. the current, is the most widely used technique in condensed matter studies. It is generally assumed that the quantum phase remains unchanged when it hosts a sufficiently small probing current, which is, surprisingly, rarely examined experimentally. In this work, we study the ultra-high mobility two-dimensional electron system using a propagating surface acoustic wave, whose traveling speed is affected by the electrons' compressibility. The acoustic power used in our study is several orders of magnitude lower than previous reports, and its induced perturbation to the system is smaller than the transport current. Therefore we are able to observe the quantum phases become more incompressible when hosting a perturbative current.

Abstract:When taking into account the electronic correlations such as the onsite Coulomb repulsion and coupling between electrons, spins and orbitals, many fascinating novel quantum states beyond the free-electron framework can emerge, e.g., unconventional superconductiv- ity and quantum spin liquids. The understanding of these new states not only will expand the existing territory of our knowledge, but also likely lead to revolution in quantum science and technology. Therefore, studying the strongly correlated physics is a cutting-edge theme in condensed matter physics. The parent state of cuprate high-temperature superconductors is a Mott insulator, an insulating state due to the strong electronic correlation, whereas the band theory predicts it to be metallic. Due to the Coulomb gap in Mott insulators, the charge degree of freedom is often frozen, which makes electrical transport measurements inapplicable. As a probe sensitive to the elementary excitations of quasiparticles not limited to electrons, but also including magnons, spinons, as well as phonons, thermal transport measurements play an important role in the study of strongly correlated electronic systems. In this paper, we review some of the recent interesting results on unconventional superconductors, heavy fermions and quantum spin liquids utilizing the longitudinal thermal transport measurements, complimentary to our recent review article on the progress of the transverse thermal conduc- tivity measurements on the thermal Hall effect.
Quantum Thermal Transport and Spin Thermoelectrics in Low-Dimensional Nano Systems: Application of Nonequilibrium Green'S Function Method

Abstract:Emerging novel properties of nanomaterials have been attracting attention. Besides quantum electronic transport properties, the breakdown of classical Fourier's law and other significant quantum thermal behaviors such as quantized thermal conductance, phonon subbands, size effects, the bottleneck effect, and even interaction between heat and spin degrees of freedom have also been revealed over the past two decades. These phenomena can be well captured by the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method, which is pretty simple under ballistic or quasi-ballistic regimes. In this review, we mainly focus on two aspects: quantum phonon transport and thermal-spin transport in low-dimensional nanostructures. First, we present a brief history of researches on thermal transport in nanostructures, summarize basic characteristics of quantum thermal transport, and then describe the basic algorithm and framework of the phonon NEGF method. Compared with other methods, the NEGF method facilitates numerical calculations and can systematically incorporate quantum many-body effects. We further demonstrate the power of phonon NEGF method by recent research progress: from the phonon NEGF method, distinct behaviors of phonon transport compared with those of electrons, intrinsic anisotropy of phonon transport, radial strain within elastic regime as quantum perturbation, two kinds of interfacial transport behaviors, defect-induced localization of local phonon density of states, unobservable phonon localization, etc, have been discovered in some particular low-dimensional nanomaterials or nanostructures. Second, the new concept of "spin caloritronics", which is devoted to the study of thermally induced spin-related transport in magnetic systems and offers a brand-new way to realize thermal-spin or thermoelectric energy conversion, is also introduced. After concisely discussing the spin Seebeck effect, spin-dependent Seebeck effect, and magneto-Seebeck effect, we present the linear response theory with spin degree of freedom and show that by combining with linear response theory, NEGF method is also applicable for studying spin caloritronics, especially spin thermoelectrics. Finally, recent research on quantum dot models or numerical calculation of real materials give hints to the searching for high-ZT materials. With the ever-increasing demand for energy and increasing power density in highly integrated circuits, quantum thermal transport properties are not only of fundamental interest, but also crucial for future developing electronic devices. Relevant researches also pave the way to spin thermoelectrics, which has vast potential in thermoelectric spintronic devices and energy harvesting.
Thermophysical properties of 1D materials: transient characterization down to atomic level

Abstract:The thermophysical properties of 1D micro/nanoscale materials could differ significantly from those of their bulk counterparts due to intensive energy carrier scattering by structures. This work provides an in-depth review of cutting-edge techniques employed for transient characterization of thermophysical properties at the micro/nanoscale scale. In terms of transient excitation, step Joule heating, step laser heating, pulsed laser heating, and frequency domain amplitude-modulated laser heating are covered. For thermal probing, electrical and Raman scattering-based physical principles are used. These techniques enable the measurement of thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and specific heat from the sub-mm level down to the atomic level (single-atom thickness). This review emphasizes the advantages of these techniques over steady state techniques and their physics, challenges, and potential applications, highlighting their significance in unraveling the intricate thermal transport phenomena to the atomic level of 1D materials.

Abstract:Thermal transport is a fundamental mechanism of energy transfer process quite distinct from wave propagation phenomena. It can be manipulated well beyond the possibilities offered by natural materials with a new generation of artificial metamaterials: thermal metamaterials. Topological physics, a focal point in contemporary condensed matter physics, is closely intertwined with thermal metamaterials in recent years. Inspired by topological photonics and topological acoustics in wave metamaterials, a new research field emerged recently, which we dub `topological thermotics', which encompasses three primary branches: topological thermal conduction, convection, and radiation. For topological thermal conduction, we discuss recent advances in both 1D and higher-dimensional thermal topological phases. For topological thermal convection, we discuss the implementation of thermal exceptional points with their unique properties and non-Hermitian thermal topological states. Finally, we review the most recent demonstration of topological effects in the near-field and far-field radiation. Anticipating future developments, we conclude by discussing potential directions of topological thermotics, including the expansion into other diffusion processes such as particle dynamics and plasma physics, and the integration with machine learning techniques.

Abstract:In low-dimensional systems, the combination of reduced dimensionality, strong interactions and topology has led to a growing number of many-body quantum phenomena. Thermal transport, which is sensitive to all energy-carrying degrees of freedom, provides a discriminating probe of emergent excitations in quantum materials and devices. However, thermal transport measurements in low dimensions are dominated by the phonon contribution of the lattice, requiring an experimental approach to isolate the electronic thermal conductance. Here we measured non-local voltage fluctuations in a multi-terminal device to reveal the electronic heat transported across a mesoscopic bridge made of low-dimensional materials. Using two-dimensional graphene as a noise thermometer, we measured the quantitative electronic thermal conductance of graphene and carbon nanotubes up to 70 K, achieving a precision of ~1% of the thermal conductance quantum at 5 K. Employing linear and nonlinear thermal transport, we observed signatures of energy transport mediated by long-range interactions in one-dimensional electron systems, in agreement with a theoretical model.

Hassle-free Approach to Thermal Transport Measurements Using Spatial-Temporal Temperature Data

Abstract:Nanoscale engineering and novel materials have created interesting effects in thermal transport. Thermal conductivity can now be different due to physical and heating sizes. Also, highly anisotropic thermal conductivity can result from unique material composition and geometries. Various experimental methods have been developed to measure these thermal conductivity variations. All of them require varying the physical size of the sample, the heating size or relative positions between heating and detection. Here, we numerically propose a time-domain optical method that uses spatial temporal temperature data to resolve anisotropic and size-dependent thermal conductivity. Our method is hassle-free as it does not vary any experimental parameters and is easily compatible with various methods of measuring temperature in the time domain. This technique can high throughput screening of thermal properties for nanoengineered and novel materials in thermal transport. Also, this technique can be used to identify novel effects in thermal transport within a single experiment.

Abstract:In this Colloquium recent advances in the field of quantum heat transport are reviewed. This topic has been investigated theoretically for several decades, but only during the past 20 years have experiments on various mesoscopic systems become feasible. A summary of the theoretical basis for describing heat transport in one-dimensional channels is first provided. The main experimental investigations of quantized heat conductance due to phonons, photons, electrons, and anyons in such channels are then presented. These experiments are important for understanding the fundamental processes that underlie the concept of a heat conductance quantum for a single channel. An illustration of how one can control the quantum heat transport by means of electric and magnetic fields, and how such tunable heat currents can be useful in devices, is first given. This lays the basis for realizing various thermal device components such as quantum heat valves, rectifiers, heat engines, refrigerators, and calorimeters. Abstract:Advances in nano-electronics, nano-optics, energy harvesting materials, and nanoparticle-based photothermal therapies are motivating studies of the thermal properties of micro/nanostructures. Thus, the demands for highly sensitive and accurate thermal measurement techniques are encouraged for both fundamental studies and industrial applications. The time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) method, based on an ultrafast pump-probe technique, enables high-fidelity thermal measurements at the micro/nanoscale and the observation of dynamic processes with sub-picosecond time resolution. TDTR is an optical technique, capable of measuring the thermal properties of micro/nanostructures, including thermal conductivity and interfacial thermal conductance of bulk substrates, thin films, and nanoparticles, among others. Here we review some recent developments in the state-of-the-art ultrafast pump-probe method applied to study the thermal and magnetic properties of materials at the micro- and nanometer scales. We also discuss in detail improvements to this technique by presenting several example extensions to its capabilities.

Abstract:The rapid and precise extraction of thermophysical properties remains an enormous challenge in pump-probe thermoreflectance, and quantum algorithms present significant potential for addressing thermal transport problems. This paper introduces an innovative application of the quantum genetic algorithm to the fitting of experimental data from pump-probe thermoreflectance. Initially, a physical model based on the thermal transmission matrix is developed to compute the heat transport of multilayer micro-/nano-structures. The quantum genetic algorithm is then employed for multiparameter optimization in the extraction of thermophysical properties and tested on three samples. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the quantum genetic algorithm assisted pump-probe thermoreflectance, capable of extracting thermophysical properties with high precision in just one minute, is approximately 30 times faster than the conventional method and 10 times faster than the genetic algorithm. Furthermore, measurement sensitivity and algorithmic randomness are analyzed. The reasons behind the phenomenon of equivalent fitting results and the indication of non-convex optimization are also presented.

Abstract:Non-equilibrium quantum transport is crucial to technological advances ranging from nanoelectronics to thermal management. In essence, it deals with the coherent transfer of energy and (quasi-)particles through quantum channels between thermodynamic baths. A complete understanding of quantum transport thus requires the ability to simulate and probe macroscopic and microscopic physics on equal footing. Using a superconducting quantum processor, we demonstrate the emergence of non-equilibrium steady quantum transport by emulating the baths with qubit ladders and realising steady particle currents between the baths. We experimentally show that the currents are independent of the microscopic details of bath initialisation, and their temporal fluctuations decrease rapidly with the size of the baths, emulating those predicted by thermodynamic baths. The above characteristics are experimental evidence of pure-state statistical mechanics and prethermalisation in non-equilibrium many-body quantum systems. Furthermore, by utilising precise controls and measurements with single-site resolution, we demonstrate the capability to tune steady currents by manipulating the macroscopic properties of the baths, including filling and spectral properties. Our investigation paves the way for a new generation of experimental exploration of non-equilibrium quantum transport in strongly correlated quantum matter.

Abstract:Characterizing the nature of hydrodynamical transport properties in quantum dynamics provides valuable insights into the fundamental understanding of exotic non-equilibrium phases of matter. Experimentally simulating infinite-temperature transport on large-scale complex quantum systems is of considerable interest. Here, using a controllable and coherent superconducting quantum simulator, we experimentally realize the analog quantum circuit, which can efficiently prepare the Haar-random states, and probe spin transport at infinite temperature. We observe diffusive spin transport during the unitary evolution of the ladder-type quantum simulator with ergodic dynamics. Moreover, we explore the transport properties of the systems subjected to strong disorder or a tilted potential, revealing signatures of anomalous subdiffusion in accompany with the breakdown of thermalization. Our work demonstrates a scalable method of probing infinite-temperature spin transport on analog quantum simulators, which paves the way to study other intriguing out-of-equilibrium phenomena from the perspective of transport.

Probing Majorana Bound States via Thermoelectric Transport

Abstract:We propose a set of thermoelectric experiments based on Aharonov-Bohm interferometry to probe Majorana bound states (MBS), which are generated in 2D topological insulators (TI) in the presence of superconducting and ferromagnetic correlations via the proximity effect. The existence and nature (coupled or uncoupled) of these MBS can be determined by studying the charge and heat transport, specifically, the behavior of various thermoelectric coefficients like the Seebeck coefficient, Peltier coefficient, thermal conductance, and violations of Wiedemann-Franz law as a function of the Fermi energy and Aharonov-Bohm flux piercing the TI ring with the embedded MBS.
