Abstract: The strange-metal state is a crucial problem in condensed matter physics highlighted by its ubiquity in almost all major correlated systems[1-7]. Its understanding could provide important insight into high-Tc superconductivity[2] and quantum criticality[8]. However, with the Fermi liquid theory failing in strange metals, understanding the highly unconventional behaviors has been a long-standing challenge. Fundamental aspects of strange metals remain elusive, including the nature of their charge carriers[1]. Here, we report the observation of a giant Nernst response in the strange-metal state in a two-dimensional superconductor 2M-WS2. A giant Nernst coefficient comparable to the vortex Nernst signal in superconducting cuprates, and its high sensitivity to carrier mobility, are found when the system enters the strange-metal state from the Fermi liquid state. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the giant Nernst peak rule out the relevance of both Landau quasiparticles and superconductivity. Instead, the giant Nernst peak at the crossover indicates a dramatic change in carrier entropy when entering the strange-metal state. The presence of such an anomalous Nernst response is further confirmed in other iconic strange metals, suggesting its universality and places stringent experimental constraints on the mechanism of strange metals.

Abstract:A strange-metal state appears in many strongly correlated materials, so understanding its nature is a crucial problem in condensed matter physics. This knowledge could provide important insight into high-temperature superconductivity and quantum criticality, but standard Fermi-liquid theory fails in strange metals. Establishing an alternative theory has been a long-standing challenge and fundamental aspects of strange metals—including the nature of their charge carriers—remain elusive. Here we report the observation of a large Nernst response in the strange-metal state in a two-dimensional superconductor 2M-WS 2 . Specifically, when the system enters the strange-metal state from the Fermi-liquid state, the Nernst coefficient increases to be comparable to the vortex Nernst signal in superconducting cuprates, and it is highly sensitive to carrier mobility. The density and disorder tuned superconductor-metal transition in two dimensions

Abstract:Quantum ground states which arise at atomically controlled oxide interfaces provide an opportunity to address key questions in condensed matter physics, including the nature of two-dimensional (2D) metallic behaviour often observed adjacent to superconductivity. At the superconducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, a metallic ground state emerges upon the collapse of superconductivity with field-effect gating. Strikingly, such metallicity is accompanied with a pseudogap. Here, we utilize independent control of carrier density and disorder of the interfacial superconductor using dual electrostatic gates, which enables the comprehensive examination of the electronic phase diagram approaching zero temperature. We find that the pseudogap corresponds to precursor pairing, and the onset of long-range phase coherence forms a 2D superconducting dome as a function of the dual gate voltages. The gate-tuned superconductor-metal transitions are driven by macroscopic phase fluctuations of Josephson coupled superconducting puddles.

Abstract:The strange metallic regime across a number of high-temperature superconducting materials presents numerous challenges to the classic theory of Fermi liquid metals. Recent measurements of the dynamical charge response of strange metals, including optimally doped cuprates, have revealed a broad, featureless continuum of excitations, extending over much of the Brillouin zone. The collective density oscillations of this strange metal decay into the continuum in a manner that is at odds with the expectations of Fermi liquid theory. Inspired by these observations, we investigate the phenomenology of bosonic collective modes and the particle-hole excitations in a class of strange metals by making an analogy to the phonons of classical lattices falling apart across an unconventional jamming-like transition associated with the onset of rigidity. By making comparisons to the experimentally measured dynamical response functions, we reproduce many of the qualitative features using the above framework. We conjecture that the dynamics of electronic charge density over an intermediate range of energy scales in a class of strongly correlated metals can be at the brink of a jamming-like transition.

Strange metals and planckian transport in a gapless phase from spatially random interactions

Abstract:'Strange' metals that do not follow the predictions of Fermi liquid theory are prevalent in materials that feature superconductivity arising from electron interactions. In recent years, it has been hypothesized that spatial randomness in electron interactions must play a crucial role in strange metals for their hallmark linear-in-temperature ($T$) resistivity to survive down to low temperatures where phonon and Umklapp processes are ineffective, as is observed in experiments. However, a clear picture of how this happens has not yet been provided in a realistic model free from artificial constructions such as large-$N$ limits and replica tricks. We study a realistic model of two-dimensional metals with spatially random antiferromagnetic interactions in a non-perturbative regime, using numerically exact high-performance large-scale hybrid Monte Carlo and exact averages over the quenched spatial randomness. Our simulations reproduce strange metals' key experimental signature of linear-in-$T$ resistivity with a 'planckian' transport scattering rate $\Gamma_\mathrm{tr} \sim k_B T/\hbar$ that is independent of coupling constants. We further find that strange metallicity in these systems is not associated with a quantum critical point, and instead arises from a phase of matter with gapless order parameter fluctuations that lacks long-range correlations and spans an extended region of parameter space: a feature that is also observed in several experiments. Our work paves the way for an eventual microscopic understanding of the role of spatial disorder in determining important properties of correlated electron materials.

Abstract:A major puzzle of condensed-matter physics is the physics behind the linear-in-temperature law of resistivity in many exotic metallic systems, including cuprates, pnictides, and heavy fermions. In this work, we propose, based on a symmetry-breaking analysis, that the strange metal phase is a novel emergent mesoscopic quantum state, beyond Landau's quasiparticle excitation, which is composed of fluctuating vortices. The model predicts, in a straightforward way, the local magnetic field with a correlation time determined by the Coulomb potential, validated by observations of dynamic muon spin relaxation rates in both 3d cuprates and 5d iridate without fitting parameter. Furthermore, the model resolves the underlying quantum mechanism of the Planckian dissipation in terms of carrier scattering by fluctuating vortex, which predicts a scattering rate proportional to the vortex density, thus deriving both linear-in temperature and linear-in field laws, with a universal scattering coefficient validated by data of several dozens of samples for cuprates and iron pnictides. These findings offer a new phenomenology for non-Fermi liquid in strongly correlated materials.

Abstract:A wide range of metals exhibit anomalous electrical and thermodynamic properties when tuned to a quantum critical point (QCP), although the origins of such strange metals have posed a long-standing mystery. The frequent association of strange metals with unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetic QCPs 1 – 4 has led to the belief that they are highly entangled quantum states 5 . By contrast, ferromagnets are regarded as an unlikely setting for strange metals, because they are weakly entangled and their QCPs are often interrupted by competing phases or first-order phase transitions 6 – 8 . Here we provide evidence that the pure ferromagnetic Kondo lattice 9 , 10 CeRh 6 Ge 4 becomes a strange metal at a pressure-induced QCP. Measurements of the specific heat and resistivity under pressure demonstrate that the ferromagnetic transition is continuously suppressed to zero temperature, revealing a strange-metal behaviour around the QCP. We argue that strong magnetic anisotropy has a key role in this process, injecting entanglement in the form of triplet resonating valence bonds into the ordered ferromagnet. We show that a singular transformation in the patterns of the entanglement between local moments and conduction electrons, from triplet resonating valence bonds to Kondo-entangled singlet pairs at the QCP, causes a jump in the Fermi surface volume—a key driver of strange-metallic behaviour. Our results open up a direction for research into ferromagnetic quantum criticality and establish an alternative setting for the strange-metal phenomenon. Most importantly, strange-metal behaviour at a ferromagnetic QCP suggests that quantum entanglement—not the destruction of antiferromagnetism—is the common driver of the varied behaviours of strange metals.

Abstract:Since the mid-eighties there has been an accumulation of metallic materials whose thermodynamic and transport properties differ significantly from those predicted by Fermi liquid theory. Examples of these so-called non-Fermi liquids include the strange metal phase of high transition temperature cuprates, and heavy fermion systems near a quantum phase transition. We report on a class of non-Fermi liquids discovered using gauge/gravity duality. The low energy behavior of these non-Fermi liquids is shown to be governed by a nontrivial infrared (IR) fixed point which exhibits nonanalytic scaling behavior only in the temporal direction. Within this class we find examples whose single-particle spectral function and transport behavior resemble those of strange metals. In particular, the contribution from the Fermi surface to the conductivity is inversely proportional to the temperature. In our treatment these properties can be understood as being controlled by the scaling dimension of the fermion operator in the emergent IR fixed point.

Strange metal from spin fluctuations in a cuprate superconductor

Abstract:Strange metals challenge our understanding of charge transport in metals. Here, we investigate how the strange metal phase of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ is impacted by a field-induced glassy antiferromagnetic state. Using magnetic fields above 80 T, we discover a strong enhancement of the normal state magnetoresistance when entering the spin glass phase. We demonstrate that the spin glass causes insulating-like upturns in the resistivity inside the pseudogap phase, which resolves the origin of the ''metal-insulator'' crossover. In addition the strange metal phase appears at low temperatures over an extended range of magnetic fields where magnetic moments fluctuate, and disappears when these moments freeze out. We conclude that the transport properties of the strange metal phase are controlled by magnetic fluctuations persisting at the lowest temperatures.

An effective framework for strange metallic transport

Abstract:Semi-holography, originally proposed as a model for conducting lattice electrons coupled to a holographic critical sector, leads to an effective theory of non-Fermi liquids with only a few relevant interactions on the Fermi surface in the large $N$ limit. A refined version of such theories has only two effective couplings which give holographic and Fermi-liquid-like contributions to the self-energy, respectively. We show that a low co-dimension sub-manifold exists in the space of refined semi-holographic theories in which strange metallic behavior is manifested, and which can be obtained just by tuning the ratio of the two couplings. On this sub-manifold, the product of the spectral function and the temperature is approximately independent of the critical exponent, the Fermi energy, and the temperature at all frequencies and near the Fermi surface when expressed in terms of suitably scaled momentum and frequency variables. This quasi-universal behavior leads to linear-in-$T$ dc resistivity and Planckian dissipation over a large range of temperatures, and we also obtain $T^{-3}$ scaling of the Hall conductivity at higher temperatures. The quasi-universal spectral function also fits well with photoemission spectroscopic data without varying the critical exponent with the doping. Combining with the results for optical conductivity, we construct a generalized version of Drude phenomenology for strange-metallic behavior which satisfies non-trivial consistency tests. Finally, we discuss a possible dynamical mechanism for the fine-tuning of the ratio of the two couplings necessary to realize the strange metallic behavior in a typical state.

Abstract:The nodal-line semiconductor Mn3Si2Te6 is generating enormous excitment due to the recent discovery of a field-driven insulator-to-metal transition and associated colossal magnetoresistance as well as evidence for a new type of quantum state involving chiral orbital currents. Strikingly, these qualities persist even in the absence of traditional Jahn-Teller distortions and double-exchange mechanisms, raising questions about exactly how and why magnetoresistance occurs along with conjecture as to the likely signatures of loop currents. Here, we measured the infrared response of Mn3Si2Te6 across the magnetic ordering and field-induced insulator-to-metal transitions in order to explore colossal magnetoresistance in the absence of Jahn-Teller and double-exchange interactions. Rather than a traditional metal with screened phonons, the field-driven insulator-to-metal transition leads to a weakly metallic state with localized carriers. Our spectral data are fit by a percolation model, providing evidence for electronic inhomogeneity and phase separation. Modeling also reveals a frequency-dependent threshold field for carriers contributing to colossal magnetoresistance which we discuss in terms of polaron formation, chiral orbital currents, and short-range spin fluctuations. These findings enhance the understanding of insulator-to-metal transitions in new settings and open the door to the design of unconventional colossal magnetoresistant materials.
Theory of a Strange Metal in a Quantum Superconductor to Metal Transition

Abstract:Recent experiments with nanopatterned thin films revealed an unusual quantum superconductor to metal phase transition (QSMT) with a linear in temperature resistivity. In contrast, most known examples of such transitions and standard theoretical considerations predict a temperature-independent sheet resistance of order $R_Q = \frac{\hbar}{e^2}$. We propose an effective theory of a disordered superconductor which features a QSMT with robust $T$ linear resistivity at the critical point. The crucial ingredient in our model is spatial disorder in the pairing interaction. Such random pairing mirrors the emergent phase disorder seen in a recent mean field study of a microscopic $d$-wave superconductor subject to potential disorder. We also make the prediction that in such systems the diamagnetic susceptibility diverges as $\log\frac{\Lambda}{T}$, which starkly differs from the power law divergence in standard XY transitions.

Nonlinear Thermoelectric Probes of Anomalous Dynamics in Topological Fermi Liquids

Abstract:In two-dimensional Fermi liquids, odd-parity Fermi surface deformations have anomalously slow relaxation rates that are suppressed as $T^4$ with temperature $T$, distinct from the standard Fermi-liquid $T^2$ scaling. We demonstrate here that these long-lived modes, which are often hidden in linear response, have a significant impact on nonlinear transport by establishing a direct proportionality of nonlinear thermoelectric currents to the anomalously large relaxation time. These currents exist in topological time-reversal invariant Fermi liquids, and their magnitude is characterized by new topological heat capacitance terms that we refer to as the {\em Berry curvature capacity} and the {\em velocity-curvature capacity}. We quantify the effect in bismuth telluride, which is an efficient thermoelectric and a topological insulator with a hexagonal Fermi surface. Our findings demonstrate the potential to explore topological and many-body effects in Fermi liquids through the nonlinear thermoelectric response, urging further experimental studies.

Abstract:Fermi liquid theory forms the basis for our understanding of the majority of metals: their resistivity arises from the scattering of well defined quasiparticles at a rate where, in the low-temperature limit, the inverse of the characteristic time scale is proportional to the square of the temperature. However, various quantum materials1–15—notably high-temperature superconductors1–10—exhibit strange-metallic behaviour with a linear scattering rate in temperature, deviating from this central paradigm. Here we show the unexpected signatures of strange metallicity in a bosonic system for which the quasiparticle concept does not apply. Our nanopatterned YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) film arrays reveal linear-in-temperature and linear-in-magnetic field resistance over extended temperature and magnetic field ranges. Notably, below the onset temperature at which Cooper pairs form, the low-field magnetoresistance oscillates with a period dictated by the superconducting flux quantum, h/2e (e, electron charge; h, Planck’s constant). Simultaneously, the Hall coefficient drops and vanishes within the measurement resolution with decreasing temperature, indicating that Cooper pairs instead of single electrons dominate the transport process. Moreover, the characteristic time scale τ in this bosonic system follows a scale-invariant relation without an intrinsic energy scale: ħ/τ ≈ a(kBT + γμBB), where ħ is the reduced Planck’s constant, a is of order unity7,8,11,12, kB is Boltzmann’s constant, T is temperature, μB is the Bohr magneton and γ ≈ 2. By extending the reach of strange-metal phenomenology to a bosonic system, our results suggest that there is a fundamental principle governing their transport that transcends particle statistics.

Abstract:Abstract Anomalous metallic behavior, marked by a saturating finite resistivity much lower than the Drude estimate, has been observed in a wide range of two-dimensional superconductors. Utilizing the electrostatically gated LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface as a versatile platform for superconductor-metal quantum phase transitions, we probe variations in the gate, magnetic field, and temperature to construct a phase diagram crossing from superconductor, anomalous metal, vortex liquid, to the Drude metal state, combining longitudinal and Hall resistivity measurements. We find that the anomalous metal phases induced by gating and magnetic field, although differing in symmetry, are connected in the phase diagram and exhibit similar magnetic field response approaching zero temperature. Namely, within a finite regime of the anomalous metal state, the longitudinal resistivity linearly depends on the field while the Hall resistivity diminishes, indicating an emergent particle-hole symmetry. The universal behavior highlights the uniqueness of the quantum bosonic metallic state, distinct from bosonic insulators and vortex liquids.

Abstract:Anomalous transport behavior -- both longitudinal and Hall -- is the defining characteristic of the strange-metal state of High-Tc cuprates. The temperature, frequency, and magnetic field dependence of the resistivity is understood within strange metal phenomenology as resulting from energy-scale competition to set the inelastic relaxation rate. The anomalously strong temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient, however, is at odds with this phenomenology. Here we report measurements of the Hall resistivity in the strange metal state of cuprates over a broad range of magnetic fields and temperatures. The observed field and temperature dependent Hall resistivity at very high magnetic fields reveals a distinct high-field regime which is controlled by energy-scale competition. This extends the strange metal phenomenology in the cuprates to include the Hall resistivity and suggests, in particular, that the direct effect of magnetic field on the relaxation dynamics of quantum fluctuations may be at least partially responsible for the anomalous Hall resistivity of the strange metal state.

Abstract:Strange metal behavior refers to a linear temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity at temperatures below the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit. It is seen in numerous strongly correlated electron systems, from the heavy fermion compounds, via transition metal oxides and iron pnictides, to magic angle twisted bi-layer graphene, frequently in connection with unconventional or "high temperature" superconductivity. To achieve a unified understanding of these phenomena across the different materials classes is a central open problem in condensed matter physics. Tests whether the linear-in-temperature law might be dictated by Planckian dissipation - scattering with the rate $\sim k_{\rm B}T/\hbar$, are receiving considerable attention. Here we assess the situation for strange metal heavy fermion compounds. They allow to probe the regime of extreme correlation strength, with effective mass or Fermi velocity renormalizations in excess of three orders of magnitude. Adopting the same procedure as done in previous studies, i.e., assuming a simple Drude conductivity with the above scattering rate, we find that for these strongly renormalized quasiparticles, scattering is much weaker than Planckian, implying that the linear temperature dependence should be due to other effects. We discuss implications of this finding and point to directions for further work.

Abstract:We consider two-dimensional metals of fermions coupled to quantum critical scalars, the latter representing order parameters or emergent gauge fields. We show that at low temperatures ($T$), such metals generically exhibit strange metal behavior with a $T$-linear resistivity arising from spatially random fluctuations in the fermion-scalar Yukawa couplings about a non-zero spatial average. We also find a $T\ln (1/T)$ specific heat, and a rationale for the Planckian bound on the transport scattering time. These results are obtained in the large $N$ expansion of an ensemble of critical metals.

Abstract:Recent spectroscopic measurements in a number of strongly correlated metals that exhibit non-Fermi-liquid-like properties have observed evidence of anomalous frequency and momentum-dependent charge-density fluctuations. Specifically, in the strange metallic regime of the cuprate superconductors, there is a featureless particle-hole continuum exhibiting unusual power laws, and experiments suggest that the plasmon mode decays into this continuum in a manner that is distinct from the expectations of conventional Fermi liquid theory. Inspired by these experimental developments, we address the nature of low-energy collective modes and the particle-hole continua for different solvable lattice models of non-Fermi liquids that host a critical Fermi surface—a sharp electronic Fermi surface without any low-energy electronic quasiparticles. We scrutinize theoretically the possible existence of a long-lived zero-sound mode, which is renormalized to the plasma frequency in the presence of long-ranged Coulomb interactions, and its decay into the continuum over a wide range of frequencies and momenta. Quite remarkably, some of the models analyzed here can account for certain aspects of the universal experimental observations, that clearly lie beyond the purview of standard Fermi liquid theory. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.107.125157 ©2023 American Physical Society
