Abstract:Aerodynamic heating in hypersonic flow presents one of the most serious challenges in the design of space vehicles. In the present study, heat flux reduction mechanism of the pulsed counterflowing jet from the nose of a blunt body is numerically investigated. Flow field around the hemisphere model is calculated in hypersonic free stream of Mach number 10 and Knudsen number 0.4. Considering that the external flow field is highly rarefied, recent works have demonstrated the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) technique to accurately predict the flow field under steady-state conditions. For supersonic flow with a counterflowing jet, the mean free path could vary by orders of magnitude within the computation domain and the computational mesh size in DSMC should be of one third of local mean free path (MFP) of the gas due to the requirement of selecting colliding partners among particles. Therefore, the open-source SPARTA code with octree Cartesian mesh is utilized in our research with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR), which has been widely used in modern DSMC codes. AMR is crucial for efficient solutions of multi-scale problems characterized by large gradients of parameters in localized areas of the computational domain. Currently, tree-based methods have being developed for extremely large scale AMR simulations with billions of cells. As a conclusion, significant decreases of surface heat flux are obtained and counterflowing jet is proved to be effective on heat flux reduction in the vicinity of the stagnation point.

Abstract:Computational methods in heat transfer and fluid flow have gained significant progresses and stimulated strong interest and continued efforts in academic and industrial communities for a broad range of thermal engineering. The topics included in this special issue cover computational methods from microscopic to macroscopic modellings and related applied researches from single-phase to multi-phase flow phenomena, as well as an introduction of Prof. Wen-Quan Tao's 50-year academic career in heat transfer. The research efforts documented in the papers clearly reflect the most recent advances in computational heat transfer and fluid flow. The vision of the paper shows some of the key achievements and main challenges which still remain in applied thermal engineering. Finally, some future perspectives in employing modern methods are given to highlight pathways of ongoing researches in understanding and predicting complex physical phenomena and processes in heat transfer and fluid flows.

Abstract:In the present study, turbulent heat transfer in open-channel flows has been numerically investigated by means of a Direct Numerical Simulations (DNSs) with a constant temperature at both free surface and bottom wall. The DNSs were conducted for two Prandtl number, 1.0 and 5.0 with a neutral (i.e., zero gravity) or stable stratification (Richardson number; 27.6), while a Reynolds number of 200, based on the friction velocity and flow depth. As the results, the coherent turbulent structures of fluid motion and thermal mixing, and the influence of Pr change for heat transfer, buoyancy effect for turbulent structures and hear transfer, and relationship among them, are revealed and discussed.

Abstract:Numerical simulations based on the MARS (Multi-interface Advection and Reconstruction Solver) developed by one of the authors have been performed in order to understand the heat transfer mechanism of falling film flows along a vertical wall. In the present study, we focused on an internal structure, i.e. velocity profile and heat transfer. In this study, the velocity profiles in a failing film are categorized into three regions: substrate film region, solitary wave region, and capillary wave region with each characteristic. Moreover, small vortices can be found in the capillary wave region. Additionally, numerical results indicate that heat transfer mechanism is different for these three regions. We proposed new heat transfer evaluation manner as a function of the Prandtl number for these regions. This manner could contribute to a design work of failing film flow device.

Abstract:*The large-scale direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a Magneto-Hydro-Dynamics (MHD) turbulent heat transfer have been executed on massively parallel processing supercomputer systems. The maximum computational speed was measured up 5.28 Tflops and the sufficiently parallelization efficiency by using up to over thousands CPUs was achieved. The DNS results were in good agreements with the previous experimental data and we proposed new MHD heat transfer equation: Nu/NuHa=0 = 1-5.5 N, where Nu is the Nusselt number, Ha is the Hartman number and N is the interaction parameter. Definitely, we can succeed to establish the DNS data of MHD heat transfer under the high-Re (= 14,000) and the wide-range Prandtl number conditions (Pr = 0.025-25).

Abstract:The design of advanced nuclear reactors (Gen IV) involves an array of challenging fluid-flow issues that affect safety and performance. Currently, these problems are addressed in an ad-hoc manner at varying scales which are time-consuming and expensive. The creation of a high-resolution heat transfer numerical database has the potential to help develop to accurate and inexpensively reduced resolution heat transfer models. Such models can help address industrial-driven issues associated with the heat transfer behavior of advanced reactors. The models can be developed using the multiscale hierarchy developed as part of the recently DOE-funded center of excellence for thermal-fluids applications in nuclear energy. Ultimately this can lead to fast-running reliable models, thus accelerating the deployment of advanced reactors. In this paper, we performed a series of Direct Numerical Simulation using the spectral element codes Nek5000 and NekRS to investigate heat transfer in mixed convection conditions. First, we investigate the heat transfer of the flow in heated parallel plates for high Prandtl number fluids. The calculated database will eventually be used to evaluate existing heat transfer correlations and some modifications will be proposed for cases where no satisfactory choice is available. We have also investigated the heated transfer alteration phenomena in a straight heated tube for supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2). The low-Mach-number approximation is used to decouple thermal and dynamic pressure, as pressure drop is negligible in this problem. The properties of sCO2 are calculated using multi-region polynomials. We observed that the heat transfer deterioration occurred in combination with the property changes of sCO2 and the depreciation of turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) for upward flow. Whereas, in downward flow, the heat transfer is enhanced thanks to the increase of TKE.

Development of a New Heat Transfer Optimization Method for Compressible Fluid Flows and It Numerical Verifications

Abstract:A general optimization criterion for heat transfer process is developed based on the entransy theory. Then, a modified field synergy principle for compressible viscous fluid, which represents the irreversibility of the specific heat transfer processes, is discussed. Modified field synergy equations are set up and theoretically, the solution of the modified field synergy equations under the constraint conditions of a given mean kinetic energy is able to show the optimal flow field, in which the amount of heat transfer is maximized. In the study, a numerical simulation of the heat transfer processes of air in a cavity is selected as the numerical verification of the modified field synergy equations. Numerical simulation results show that asymmetric vortices are generated in the flow field due to the variation of the density. These vortices enhance the heat transfer performance in the absence of too much work dissipation. Comparisons among the results of the Navier Stokes equations, the existed laminar field synergy equations, and the modified field synergy equations are made. The results confirm that the equations developed in this study correspond to the best heat-transfer performance when the density of fluid changes with temperature or pressure. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Convective heat transfer in turbulent flow in porous media is, in general, less understood compared to laminar and creeping flows. It is broadly integrated into industrial applications even though a lack of understanding in microscale. In the present study, we report a direct numerical simulation (DNS) based microscopic analysis of heat and fluid flow in synthetic porous media with an aim to link the macroscopic statistics and qualitative observations with pore-scale signatures of the same. DNS is conducted with two computational codes with a cautious validation on the microscale. The conventional finite-volume solver shows an excellent agreement with high-order spectral/hp element solvers. The synthetic porous media are comprised of square cylinders in a staggered array. Macroscopic observation indicates an increased pressure loss and increased Nusselt number (Nu) as a result of high Reynolds numbers. However, a further examination of the ratio of Stanton number to skin friction coefficient St/C-f reveals that increasing Reynolds numbers lead to more pressure loss than improved heat transfer. Microscopic analysis shows that Nu is highest on the impinging surface, whereas lowest on the wake surface. In addition, it tends to be homogeneously distributed on surface area in the high porosity case. In the low porosity case, Nu on the sharp corners, is significantly higher than on other locations. Probability density function (PDF) of streamwise velocity fluctuation u' shows Gaussian like distribution within two standard deviation. The high porosity group owns a spike around zero abscissa on PDF of both u' and temperature fluctuation T', which is an indication of less chaotic flow motions. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
