Abstract:For manipulating heat flow efficiently, recently we established a theory of temperature-dependent transformation thermotics which holds for steady-state cases. Here, we develop the theory to unsteady-state cases by considering the generalized Fourier's law for transient thermal conduction. As a result, we are allowed to propose a new class of intelligent thermal metamaterial — switchable concentrator, which is made of inhomogeneous anisotropic materials. When environmental temperature is below or above a critical value, the concentrator is automatically switched on, namely, it helps to focus heat flux in a specific region. However, the focusing does not affect the distribution pattern of temperature outside the concentrator. We also perform finite-element simulations to confirm the switching effect according to the effective medium theory by assembling homogeneous isotropic materials, which bring more convenience for experimental fabrication than inhomogeneous anisotropic materials. This work may help to figure out new intelligent thermal devices, which provide more flexibility in controlling heat flow, and it may also be useful in other fields that are sensitive to temperature gradient, such as the Seebeck effect.

Abstract:A new generation of efficient heat transfer and cooling technologies has been studied by researchers since the 1990s due to the rise of nanotechnology. In 1995, Professor S.U.S. The idea of 'nanofluids' was first proposed by Choi from the Aragon National Laboratory in the United States, which combines nanotechnology with traditional thermal engineering in an innovative way. Enhanced heat transfer is a field where nanofluid technology has broad application prospects and potential significant economic value, and is known as the 'future cooling and heat dissipation technology'. The theme of this article is the principles, preparation processes, and application fields of micro-nano fluids. The research on nanofluids still needs to be carried out. Due to their unique thermal conductivity properties, they can theoretically be widely used in fields such as industry, energy, aerospace, automobiles, air conditioning and refrigeration, electronics, etc. The aim of this study is to examine the heat conduction principle of nanofluids, the basic preparation process, and some applications of nanofluids in the field of enhanced heat conduction.

Abstract:Heat transfer can differ distinctly at the nanoscale from that at the macroscale. Recent advancement in computational and experimental techniques has enabled a large number of interesting observations and understanding of heat transfer processes at the nanoscale. In this review, we will first discuss recent advances in computational and experimental methods used in nanoscale thermal transport studies, followed by reviews of novel thermal transport phenomena at the nanoscale observed in both computational and experimental studies, and discussion on current understanding of these novel phenomena. Our perspectives on challenges and opportunities on computational and experimental methods are also presented.

Abstract:Demands for engineering thermal transport properties are ever increasing for a wide range of modern microand nanodevices and materials-based energy technologies. In particular, there is a severe situation due to the rapid progress in the synthesis and processing of materials and devices with structural characteristic length on the nanometer scales, which are comparable or even smaller than the intrinsic length scales (such as mean free path and wavelength) of basic energy carriers (such as phonons, electrons, and photons). Although advanced approaches for controlling the electronic and photonic transport have been proposed in the past decades, progress on controlling lattice vibrations (i.e., the phonons) is still far behind. Gaps between the fundamental understandings of the behavior of the basic energy carriers at small scales and the technological demands still remain, particularly from a computer modeling point of view. Herewith, we give a perspective of the computational approaches for predicting the thermal transport properties of low-dimensional materials and nanostructures, which are mainly sorted into three categories: empirical molecular dynamics, anharmonic lattice dynamics based Boltzmann transport equation, and Landauer theory. The advantage and disadvantage of each method are discussed and some possible solutions are suggested. The discussion is focused on fully and accurately characterizing the mode-level phonon behavior, possible all-order phonon scattering process, and incorporation of realistic nanostructures. Moreover, emerging challenges of phonon coupling effects, such as electron−phonon, phonon−photon, and phonon−magnon coupling, are also discussed. We expect that this perspective will stimulate future research in computer modeling of micro-/nanoscale heat transfer beyond traditional phonons.

Abstract:A diverse spectrum of technology drivers such as improved thermal barriers, higher efficiency thermoelectric energy conversion, phase-change memory, heat-assisted magnetic recording, thermal management of nanoscale electronics, and nanoparticles for thermal medical therapies are motivating studies of the applied physics of thermal transport at the nanoscale. This review emphasizes developments in experiment, theory, and computation in the past ten years and summarizes the present status of the field. Interfaces become increasingly important on small length scales. Research during the past decade has extended studies of interfaces between simple metals and inorganic crystals to interfaces with molecular materials and liquids with systematic control of interface chemistry and physics. At separations on the order of ∼ 1 nm , the science of radiative transport through nanoscale gaps overlaps with thermal conduction by the coupling of electronic and vibrational excitations across weakly bonded or rough interfaces between materials. Major advances in the physics of phonons include first principles calculation of the phonon lifetimes of simple crystals and application of the predicted scattering rates in parameter-free calculations of the thermal conductivity. Progress in the control of thermal transport at the nanoscale is critical to continued advances in the density of information that can be stored in phase change memory devices and new generations of magnetic storage that will use highly localized heat sources to reduce the coercivity of magnetic media. Ultralow thermal conductivity—thermal conductivity below the conventionally predicted minimum thermal conductivity—has been observed in nanolaminates and disordered crystals with strong anisotropy. Advances in metrology by time-domain thermoreflectance have made measurements of the thermal conductivity of a thin layer with micron-scale spatial resolution relatively routine. Scanning thermal microscopy and thermal analysis using proximal probes has achieved spatial resolution of 10 nm, temperature precision of 50 mK, sensitivity to heat flows of 10 pW, and the capability for thermal analysis of sub-femtogram samples.

Abstract:When implemented on the nanoscale, material flows driven by gradients in temperature, sometimes known as thermocapillary flows, can be exploited for various purposes, including nanopatterning, device fabrication, and purification of arrays of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Systematic experimental and theoretical studies on thermocapillary flow in thin polymer films driven by heating in individual metallic SWNT over a range of conditions and molecular weights reveal the underlying physics of this process. The findings suggest that the zero-shear viscosity is a critical parameter that dominates the dependence on substrate temperature and heating power. The experimentally validated analytical models in this study allow assessment of sensitivity to other parameters, such as the temperature coefficient of surface tension, the thermal interface conductance, and the characteristic length scale of the heated zone.

Abstract:Context: Industrial production and humans cannot exist without energy, but the low efficiency of the heat transfer in the excessive use of energy is the most significant aspect of energy saving and emission reduction. Molecular dynamics simulation methods are devoted to simulate the heat transfer efficiency of a nanofluid system with different particle sizes, and the heat transfer enhancement mechanism of the nanofluid is simulated and studied from a microscopic perspective. The analysis showed that as nanoparticle size increases, the thermal conductivity of the Al-Ar nanofluid tends to decrease, but all of them are still higher than the thermal conductivity of the liquid argon system. According to the findings of the density and radial distribution function analyses, it can be seen that the microstructure of the system changes after putting solid nanoparticles to the original fluid. This alteration in the system's microstructure is the primary component responsible for the increased heat transfer efficiency of nanofluids. Methods: In this paper, based on the theory of molecular dynamics, the simulation calculations were mainly performed using LAMMPS software, which is a commonly used open source computational program in the field of MD simulation research. VMD is used for visualization and analysis. The Lennard-Jones potential function was used in the simulation to accurately describe the forces acting between the atoms.
Thermal Radiation at the Nanoscale and Applications

Abstract:There has been a paradigm shift from the well-known laws of thermal radiation derived over a century ago, valid only when the length scales involved are much larger than the thermal wavelength (around 10 $\mu$m at room temperature), to a general framework known as fluctuational electrodynamics that allows calculations of radiative heat transfer for arbitrary sizes and length scales. Near-field radiative heat transfer and thermal emission in systems of sub-wavelength size can exhibit super-Planckian behaviour, i.e. flux rates several orders of magnitude larger than that predicted by the Stefan-Boltzmann (or blackbody) limit. These effects can be combined with novel materials, e.g. low-dimensional or topological systems, to yield even larger modifications and spectral and/or directional selectivity. We introduce briefly the context and the main steps that have led to the current boom of ideas and applications. We then discuss the original and impactful works gathered in the associated Special Topic collection, which provides an overview of the flourishing field of nanoscale thermal radiation.

Abstract:This work summarizes recent progress on the thermal transport properties of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures, with an emphasis on experimental results. Depending on the applications, different 3D nanostructures can be prepared or designed to either achieve a low thermal conductivity for thermal insulation or thermoelectric devices, or a high thermal conductivity for thermal interface materials used in the continuing miniaturization of electronics. A broad range of 3D nanostructures have been discussed, ranging from colloidal crystals/assemblies, array structures, holey structures, hierarchical structures, 3D nanostructured fillers for metal matrix composites and polymer composites. Different factors that impact the thermal conductivity of these 3D structures are compared and analyzed. This work provides an overall understanding of the thermal transport properties of various 3D nanostructures, which will shed light on the thermal management at nanoscale.

Abstract:Two-dimensional nanomaterials provide an ideal platform for the research of heat conduction in nanoscale, for their novel heat conduction properties derived from limited phonon transport. Due to unique two-dimensional expanded ultra-thin structure, interface engineering effectively induces the change of phonon vibration mode and the coupling of phonon vibration, leading to the differences of heat conduction behavior. Benefiting from wide adjustability of heat conduction properties, two-dimensional nanomaterials exhibit potential applications in the heat dissipation of micro-nano devices and thermal protection in harsh environments. This paper introduces the mechanisms and novel characteristics of heat conduction in classical two-dimensional nanomaterials in detail, expounds the influence of interface engineering on the heat conduction in two-dimensional nanomaterials, and further expects the prospects of atomic-molecular interface regulation in the field of heat conduction in two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent studies of thermal transport in nanoscaled semiconductors. Different from bulk materials, new physics and novel thermal properties arise in low dimensional nanostructures, such as the abnormal heat conduction, the size dependence of thermal conductivity, phonon boundary/edge scatterings. It is also demonstrated that phonons transport super-diffusively in low dimensional structures, in other words, Fourier's law is not applicable. Based on manipulating phonons, we also discuss envisioned applications of nanostructures in a broad area, ranging from thermoelectrics, heat dissipation to phononic devices.

Nanoscale and Microscale Thermophysical Engineering

Abstract:This article describes the most prominent materials, fabrication methods, and manufacturing schemes for micro- and nanostructured surfaces that can be employed to enhance phase-change heat transfer phenomena. The numerous processes include traditional microfabrication techniques such as thin-film deposition, lithography, and etching, as well as template-assisted and template-free nanofabrication techniques. The creation of complex, hierarchical, and heterogeneous surface structures using advanced techniques is also reviewed. Additionally, research needs in the field and future directions necessary to translate these approaches from the laboratory to high-performance applications are identified. Particular focus is placed on the extension of these techniques to the design of micro/nanostructures for increased performance, manufacturability, and reliability. The current research needs and goals are detailed, and potential pathways forward are suggested.

Abstract:Radiative heat transfer between parallel objects separated by deep sub-wavelength distances and subject to large thermal gradients (>100 K) could enable breakthrough technologies for electricity generation and thermal transport control. However, thermal transport in this regime has never been achieved experimentally due to the difficulty of maintaining large thermal gradients over nm-scale distances while avoiding other heat transfer mechanism such as conduction. Previous experimental measurement between parallel planes were limited to distances greater than 500 nm (with a 20 K thermal gradient), which is much larger than the theoretically predicted distance (<100 nm) required for most applications. Here we show near-field radiative heat transfer between parallel nanostructures in the deep sub-wavelength regime using high precision micro electromechanical (MEMS) displacement control. We also exploit the high mechanical stability of structures under high tensile stress to minimize thermal buckling effects and maintain small separations at large thermal gradients. We achieve an enhancement of heat transfer of almost two orders of magnitude relative to the far-field limit, which corresponds to a 54 nm separation. We also achieve a high temperature gradient (260 K) between the cold and hot surfaces while maintaining a ~100 nm distance.

Abstract:The thermal properties of interfaces in nanomaterials are critical for various technological applications, including thermal management in electronic and photonic devices, thermoelectric conversion and thermal insulation. Recent advancements in numerical simulation tools (the non-equilibrium Green's approach, the Boltzmann transport equation and the Monte Carlo method, molecular dynamics simulations) have significantly enhanced our understanding of phonon transport and scattering processes in nanomaterials. These advances have led to the discovery of new thermal interfacial materials and enabled precise modulation of phonon thermal conductance to achieve desired thermal performance. This review summarizes recent research progress in interface thermal transport, focusing on intriguing heat phenomena such as finite size effect and phonon coherent property. Additionally, it discusses strategies for modulating thermal conductance through disorder and roughness. Finally, the review proposes the opportunities and challenges associated with modulating interface thermal transport.

Abstract:Some of the most exciting recent advancements in heat conduction physics have been motivated, enabled, or achieved by the thermal management community that ITherm serves so effectively. In this paper we highlight the resulting renaissance in basic heat conduction research, which is linked to cooling challenges from power transistors to portables. Examples include phonon transport and scattering in nanotransistors, engineered high-conductivity composites, modulated conductivity through phase transitions, as well as the surprising transport properties of low-dimensional (1D and 2D) nanomaterials. This work benefits strongly from decades of collaboration and leadership from the semiconductor industry.

Abstract:The demand for sophisticated tools and approaches in heat management and control has triggered the fast development of fields that include conductive thermal metamaterials, nanophononics, and far-field and near-field radiative thermal management. In this Review, we offer a unified perspective on the control of heat transfer, summarizing complementary paradigms towards the manipulation of physical parameters and the realization of unprecedented phenomena in heat transfer using artificial structures. The Review is divided into three parts that focus on the three main categories of heat flow control. Thermal conduction and radiation, at both the macroscale and microscale, are emphasized in the first and second parts. The third part discusses efforts to actively introduce heat sources or tune the material parameters with multiphysical effects in conduction, radiation and convection. We conclude by analysing the challenges in this research area and surveying new possible directions, in particular topological thermal effects, heat waves and quantum thermal effects.
