Abstract:In this paper we show that Ultradistributions of Exponential Type (UET) are appropriate for the description in a consistent way world sheet superstring and superstring field theories. A new Lagrangian for the closed world sheet superstring is obtained. We also show that the superstring field is a linear superposition of UET of compact support (CUET), and give the notion of anti-superstring. We evaluate the propagator for the string field, and calculate the convolution of two of them.

Abstract:As of today there exist consistent, gauge-invariant string field theories describing all string theories: bosonic open and closed strings, open superstrings, heterotic strings and type II strings. The construction of these theories require algebraic ingredients, such as $A_\infty$ and $L_\infty$ homotopy algebras, geometric ingredients, relevant to the building of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces and the distribution of picture changing operators, and field-theoretic ingredients, involving two-dimensional CFT's and BCFT's and Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization. Applications of string field theory include the description of non-perturbative phenomena such as tachyon condensation and classical solutions, and the resolution of a number of ambiguities that bedevil the world-sheet formulation of perturbative string theory. It also allows, given a proper definition of contours of integration for momenta, for a proof of unitarity and a clear understanding of the ultraviolet finiteness of the theory. In this article we review these developments.

Abstract:We study the physical spectrum of cubic open string field theory around universal solutions, which are constructed using the matter Virasoro operators and the ghost and anti-ghost fields. We find the cohomology of the new BRS charge around the solutions, which appear with a ghost number that differs from that of the original theory. Considering the gauge-unfixed string field theory, we conclude that open string excitations perturbatively disappear after the condensation of the string field to the solutions.
Superconducting strings in the two-Higgs doublet model

Abstract:We present superconducting vortex solutions in the two-Higgs doublet model which has a gauged $U(1)$ Higgs-family symmetry. We write down an ansatz for the solution and study its basic properties, for the case of both global and gauged symmetries. We demonstrate its prima-facie stability using 3D numerical simulations of a global version of the theory, observing the flow of current along the string. We discuss how generic such a phenomena might be and the possible consequences if such a model is found in nature.

Abstract:We review recent developments in the construction of heterotic and type II string field theories and their various applications. These include systematic procedures for determining the shifts in the vacuum expectation values of fields under quantum corrections, computing renormalized masses and S-matrix of the theory around the shifted vacuum and a proof of unitarity of the S-matrix. The S-matrix computed this way is free from all divergences when there are more than 4 noncompact space–time dimensions, but suffers from the usual infrared divergences when the number of noncompact space–time dimensions is 4 or less.

String perturbation theory of Klebanov-Strassler throat

Abstract:In this work, we develop a tool to study string perturbation theory of the Klebanov-Strassler solution in the large radius approximation based on open-closed superstring field theory. Combining the large radius expansion and a double scaling limit, we find a perturbative background solution of open-closed superstring field theory that corresponds to the Klebanov-Strassler solution. To illustrate the utilities of this approach, we break supersymmetry of the background by placing a stack of anti-D3-branes at the tip of the throat. We then find a perturbative open string background solution to the third order in the large radius approximation, which agrees with the well-known supergravity analysis of Kachru-Pearson-Verlinde (KPV) on the stability of the antiD3-brane supersymmetry breaking. The perturbative background solution to the open string field theory we found is expected to be dual to an NS5-brane probing the KS solution.

Abstract:This note is devoted to the study of the classical solutions on the bosonic string with euclidean world-sheet in AdS(5)xS(5). We generalize solutions presented in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0707.4254" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0707.4254">arXiv:0707.4254</a> [hep-th] to the case where we include the dynamics of the string on S(5) as well.

Abstract:We construct Lorentz invariant and gauge invariant 1PI effective action for closed and open superstrings and demonstrate that it satisfies the classical BV master equation. We also construct the quantum master action for this theory satisfying the quantum BV master equation and generalize the construction to unoriented theories. The extra free field needed for the construction of closed superstring field theory plays a crucial role in coupling the closed strings to D-branes and orientifold planes.

Abstract:The WZW form of open superstring field theory has linearized gauge invariances associated with the BRST operator Q and the zero mode η0 of the picture minus-one fermionic superconformal ghost. We discuss gauge fixing of the free theory in a simple class of gauges using the Faddeev-Popov method. We find that the world-sheet ghost number of ghost and antighost string fields ranges over all integers, except one, and at any fixed ghost number, only a finite number of picture numbers appear. We calculate the propagators in a variety of gauges and determine the field-antifield content and the free master action in the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. Unlike the case of bosonic string field theory, the resulting master action is not simply related to the original gauge-invariant action by relaxing the constraint on the ghost and picture numbers.

Abstract:We classify almost all classical string configurations, considered in the framework of the semi-classical limit of the string/gauge theory duality. Then, we describe a procedure for obtaining the conserved quantities and the exact classical string solutions in general string theory backgrounds, when the string embedding coordinates depend non-linearly on the worldsheet time parameter.

Abstract:In this short talk we review basic ideas of string field theory with the emphasis on the recent developments. We show how without too much technicality one can look for analytic solutions to Witten's open string field theory. This is an expanded version of a talk given by the author over the last year at a number of occasions and notably at the conference "Selected Topics in Mathematical and Particle Physics" in honor of Prof. Jiri Niederle's 70th birthday.

Abstract:A closed string worldsheet of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures can be presented as a contact interaction in which $n$ semi-infinite cylinders are glued together in a specific way via the Strebel differential on it, if $n\geq1,\ 2g-2+n>0$. We construct a string field theory of closed strings such that all the Feynman diagrams are represented by such contact interactions. In order to do so, we define off-shell amplitudes in the underlying string theory using the combinatorial Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates to describe the moduli space and derive a recursion relation satisfied by them. Utilizing the Fokker-Planck formalism, we construct a string field theory from which the recursion relation can be deduced through the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The Fokker-Planck Hamiltonian consists of kinetic terms and three string interaction terms.

Abstract:We study the superstring theory with an Abelian worldsheet gauge field. The components of the gauge field appear as a space and a time coordinates. We call them as "fictitious coordinates". The worldsheet supersymmetry and the Poincar\'e symmetry of this model will be analyzed. The $T$-duality and quantization of the two fictitious coordinates also will be obtained.

We propose a new free-field description of the worldsheet theory and show how localization of string amplitudes emerges from the path integral. We exemplify our proposal by reproducing the worldsheet partition function of the (1 , 1|2) 1 WZW model and providing explicit expressions for spectrally-flowed vertex operators and DDF operators. We compute string correlators in the path integral formalism and obtain a precise tree-level match with correlation functions of the boundary symmetric orbifold.

Abstract:We propose a Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formulation of boundary superstring field theory. The superstring field action is defined in terms of a closed one-form in the space of couplings, and we compute it explicitly for exactly solvable tachyon perturbations. We also argue that the superstring field action defined in this way is the partition function on the disc, in accord with a previous proposal.

Effective interactions of the open bosonic string via field theory

Abstract:We describe a method to extract an effective Lagrangian description for open bosonic strings, at zero transcendentality. The method relies on a particular formulation of its scattering amplitudes derived from color-kinematics duality. More precisely, starting from a $(DF)^2 + \text{YM}$ quantum field theory, we integrate out all the massive degrees of freedom to generate an expansion in the inverse string tension $\alpha^\prime$. We explicitly compute the Lagrangian terms through $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^{\prime 4})$, and target the sector of operators proportional to $F^4$ to all orders in $\alpha^\prime$.
