Abstract:IN real communities of plants and animals, species are linked to each other–as predator and prey, competitors or mutualists–in a complex mesh of interactions. The schematic representation of this array of interconnections is called a food web. Although a good deal of scattered information about individual food webs has been available for some time, it is only in the last 10 years or so that people have begun a systematic attempt to understand what factors determine the structure of food webs. A recent workshop* on food webs, organized mainly by the ecologists of Oak Ridge and held amidst the fall foliage in the Smoky Mountains, was valuable both in drawing some strands of research together and in helping set an agenda for future work.
