Abstract:The D0 detector at Fermilab is in the final stages of an extensive upgrade. It is designed to meet the demands imposed by high luminosity Tevatron running planned to begin March 2001. Abstract:The High-Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI Darmstadt consists of a 6-coil toroidal magnet centered on the beam axis and six identical detection sections located between the coils and covering polar angles between $18^\circ$ and $85^\circ$. The physics aims include the study of the properties of hot and dense hadronic matter as well as elementary and pion-induced reactions. To increase the acceptance of HADES at very low polar angles in the forward region, between $0.5^\circ$ and $7^\circ$, a new detector, the Forward Detector (FD), has been built. The FD is composed of a tracking and a Time Of Flight (TOF) detector based on Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) technology. The TOF detector, covering an area of around $2$ m$^2$, is composed by $128$ strip-like shielded RPC cells, with two different widths $22$ mm and $44$ mm and $750$ mm length distributed in four modules symmetrically placed around the beam axis. Each cell is composed by four gas gaps, $0.270$ mm, delimited by three ($2$ mm) aluminum and two ($1$ mm) glass electrodes. In order to cope with an expected maximum particle load of around $400$ Hz/cm$^{2}$, close to the beam axis, the detector is operated above room temperature in order to decrease the resistivity of the glass and increase the count rate capability. Details of the system construction and results concerning timing precision are described in this communication. The detector was operated at $31.5^\circ$C with a maximum particle load of around $600$ Hz/cm$^2$ during a production beam time for six weeks in early $2022$ showing an average time precision of around $80$ ps.

Abstract:A new forward vertex detector is under construction for the PHENIX experiment and will be installed in 2011. The device consists of two sets of four disks of silicon mini-strips and matches the acceptance of the existing muon detectors, and will provide precise vertex measurement for charged tracks. The forward vertex detector is designed to greatly enhance the heavy-flavor physics capabilities on PHENIX. The structure of the proposed device and its performance from Monte Carlo studies are presented.

Abstract:A new, very forward proton spectrometer (VFPS) with large acceptance is proposed to be installed in the proton beam of the H1 experiment after the luminosity upgrade in the year 2000. The spectrometer, located at 220 m downstream of the interaction point is based on the Roman Pot technique and consists of two stations situated in the cold section of the proton beam line. Physics motivations and a brief description of the proton spectrometer are presented.

Abstract:Using the D0 detector, we have studied events produced in proton-antiproton collisions that contain large forward regions with very little energy deposition (``rapidity gaps'') and concurrent jet production at center-of-mass energies of root-s = 630 and 1800 Gev. The fractions of forward and central jet events associated with such rapidity gaps are measured and compared to predictions from Monte Carlo models. For hard diffractive candidate events, we use the calorimeter to extract the fractional momentum loss of the scattered protons.

Abstract:In this communication I describe the ATLAS forward physics program and the detectors, LUCID, ZDC and ALFA that have been designed to meet this experimental challenge. In addition to their primary role in the determination of ATLAS luminosity these detectors - in conjunction with the main ATLAS detector - will be used to study soft QCD and diffractive physics in the initial low luminosity phase of ATLAS running. Finally, I will briefly describe the ATLAS Forward Proton (AFP) project that currently represents the future of the ATLAS forward physics program.

Abstract:A new silicon detector has been developed to provide the PHENIX experiment with precise charged particle tracking at forward and backward rapidity. The Forward Silicon Vertex Tracker (FVTX) was installed in PHENIX prior to the 2012 run period of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The FVTX is composed of two annular endcaps, each with four stations of silicon mini-strip sensors, covering a rapidity range of 1.2 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.2 that closely matches the two existing PHENIX muon arms. Each station consists of 48 individual silicon sensors, each of which contains two columns of mini-strips with 75 mu m pitch in the radial direction and lengths in the phi direction varying from 3.4 mm at the inner radius to 11.5 mm at the outer radius. The FVTX has approximately 0.54 million strips in each endcap. These are read out with FPFIX chips, developed in collaboration with Fermilab, which are wire bonded directly to the mini-strips. The maximum strip occupancy reached in central Au-Au collisions is approximately 2.8%. The precision tracking provided by this device makes the identification of muons from secondary vertices away from the primary event vertex possible. The expected distance of closest approach (DCA) resolution of 200 mu m or better for particles with a transverse momentum of 5 GeV/c will allow identification of muons from relatively long-lived particles, such as D and B mesons, through their broader DCA distributions. Abstract:At the FAIR facility, currently under construction at GSI (Darmstadt), a 1.5 AGeV uranium beam with intensities up to 2.5 × 10 11 238 U/spill will impinge on a graphite target at the entrance of the Super-FRS for the production of a wide range of rare isotopes by projectile fission and fragmentation. The next generation in-flight magnetic separator Super-FRS, operated up to a magnetic rigidity of 20 Tm with a large angular acceptance (Δθ = ± 40 mrad, Δφ = ± 20 mrad) and momentum acceptance (Δ p/p = ± 2.5%), requires a new generation of tracking detectors with a position resolution of 0.2 mm (σ x ) over large detector areas reaching up to 570 cm 2 . Besides gas detectors, planar detectors made of scintillating fibers are an option worth investigating not only because of the comparable material budget but especially for the fast response and high-rate capability. A one-dimensional prototype consisting of 128 fibers with active area of 25.6 × 100 mm 2 coupled to Multi-Pixel-Photon Counters (MPPCs) and readout by FPGA TDC is described together with some recent 197 Au beam test results.

Abstract:The D0 detector at The Fermilab Tevatron is undergoing a major upgrade to prepare for data taking with luminosities reaching 2 x 10^{32} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. The upgrade includes a new central tracking array, new muon detector components and electronic upgrades to many subsystems. The D0 upgraded detector will be operational for RUN II in spring 2000.

Abstract:DUNE is a long-baseline accelerator experiment currently in construction at Fermilab and SURF (South Dakota). The science objectives of DUNE include the search for CP violation in the leptonic sector and the identification of the neutrino mass hierarchy, along with the observation of supernova neutrino bursts and proton decay. The Far Detector consists of four modules located deep underground, three of those instrumented with Liquid Argon TPCs and equipped with the DUNE Photon Detection System (PDS). The PDS is based on a novel light trapping technology that greatly enhances the DUNE physics reach, improving vertex identification, energy resolution and providing the trigger for non-beam events. Following a first run of data taking (from 2018 to 2020), the PDS of the two prototypes of the Far Detector located at CERN Neutrino Platform, ProtoDUNE-HD and ProtoDUNE-VD, is currently being reinstalled in order to implement the final design of the first (Horizontal Drift) and second (Vertical Drift) module. This paper presents the latest results of the PDS from test facilities and the status of the installation in ProtoDUNE in view of its second run. The most important achievements of the Vertical Drift PDS are reported, with emphasis on the new SiPM configuration and cold electronics, the custom WaveLength Shifting bars, and the latest generation of the dichroic filter designed for ProtoDUNE-VD.

Abstract:The ATLAS experiment at the LHC is building several detector systems for forward physics studies and to determine the luminosity. The main forward systems consist of a Cerenkov detector called LUCID, a Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) and Roman Pots which will house a scintillating fiber tracker system called ALFA. Here we report some of the forward physics activities that are foreseen in ATLAS together with the status of the related detector systems.

Abstract:The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will be a premier facility for exploring long-standing questions about the boundaries of the standard model. Acting in concert with the liquid argon time projection chambers underpinning the far detector design, the DUNE photon detection system will capture ultraviolet scintillation light in order to provide valuable timing information for event reconstruction. To maximize the active area while maintaining a small photocathode coverage, the experiment will utilize a design based on plastic light guides coated with a wavelength-shifting compound, along with silicon photomultipliers, to collect and record scintillation light from liquid argon. This report presents recent preliminary performance measurements of this baseline design and several alternative designs which promise significant improvements in sensitivity to low-energy interactions.

Abstract:The proposed high-luminosity high-energy Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will provide a clean environment to precisely study several fundamental questions in the fields of high-energy and nuclear physics . A low material budget and high granularity silicon vertex/tracking detector is critical to carry out a series of hadron and jet measurements at the future EIC especially for the heavy flavor product reconstruction or tagging. The conceptual design of a proposed forward silicon tracking detector with the pseudorapidity coverage from 1.2 to 3.5 has been developed in integration with different magnet options and the other EIC detector sub-systems. The tracking performance of this detector enables precise heavy flavor hadron and jet measurements in the hadron beam going direction. The detector R$\&$D for the proposed silicon technology candidates: Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) and radiation hard depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MALTA), which can provide good spatial and timing resolutions, is underway. Bench test results of the LGAD and MALTA prototype sensors will be discussed.

Abstract:The Very Forward Proton Spectrometer (VFPS) of the H1 experiment at HERA is collecting data since 2005. The fiber detectors in the Roman pots located at 218 and 222m downstream from the H1 interaction point, tag and measure diffractively scattered protons with a high acceptance in the $\xpom$ range [0.01, 0.025]. The experimental set up and the spectrometer tagging performance using diffractive events collected during 2006 and 2007 are discussed.

Abstract:The FASER experiment is a new small and inexpensive experiment that is being placed 480 meters downstream of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The experiment will shed light on currently unexplored phenomena, having the potential to make a revolutionary discovery. FASER is designed to capture decays of exotic particles, produced in the very forward region, out of the ATLAS detector acceptance. This talk will present the physics prospects, the detector design, and the construction progress of FASER. The experiment has been successfully installed and will take data during the LHC Run-3.

Abstract:DarkSide-20k is a global direct dark matter search experiment situated underground at LNGS (Italy), designed to reach a total exposure of 200 tonne-years nearly free from instrumental backgrounds. The core of the detector is a dual-phase Time Projection Chamber (TPC) filled with 50 tonne of low-radioactivity liquid argon. The entire TPC wall is surrounded by a gadolinium-loaded polymethylmethacrylate (Gd-PMMA), which acts as a neutron veto, immersed in a second low-radioactivity liquid argon bath enclosed in a stainless steel vessel. The neutron veto is equipped with large-area Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM) array detectors, placed on the outside of the TPC wall. SiPMs are arranged in a compact design meant to minimize the material used for PCBs, cables and connectors: the so-called Veto Photon-Detector Units (vPDUs). A vPDU comprises 16 vTiles, each containing 24 SIPMs, together with front-end electronics, and a motherboard, which distributes voltage and control signals, sums vTiles channels, and drives the electrical signal transmission. The neutron veto will be equipped with 120 vPDUs. The paper will focus on the production of the first vPDUs, describing the assembly chain in the U.K. institutes, in order to underline the rigorous QA/QC procedures, up to the final characterization of the first completed prototypes. Tests will be extensively performed in liquid nitrogen baths either for the single vTiles and for the assembled vPDUs, with the purpose of assigning a "quality passport" to each component.

Design of Prototype Front-end Digital Module for Direct Dark Matter Detection based on LAr

Abstract: Liquid argon (LAr) with a high light yield of approximately 40 photons per keV is an attractive target for the direct detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are well motivated galactic dark matter candidates. We studies a front-end electronics design for a LAr dark matter detector with the scintillation read out by PMT, which has an input dynamic range from 5pC to 1nC, and high resolution that single photoelectron can be distinguished. In this paper, we present the design of front-end digital module (FDM) which is the important portion of electronics. The prototype FDM is equipped with 14-bit 1-GSPS analog-to-digital converters (ADC), and the performance of prototype FDM had been test in lab (e.g. ENOB is 10.40 bits @298 MHz). Moreover, this prototype FDM had been tested with LAr detector collaboratively and test results are also presented.

Abstract:This paper describes the design, fabrication, installation and performance of the new inner layer called Layer 0 (L0) that was inserted in the existing Run IIa Silicon Micro-Strip Tracker (SMT) of the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. L0 provides tracking information from two layers of sensors, which are mounted with center lines at a radial distance of 16.1 mm and 17.6 mm respectively from the beam axis. The sensors and readout electronics are mounted on a specially designed and fabricated carbon fiber structure that includes cooling for sensor and readout electronics. The structure has a thin polyimide circuit bonded to it so that the circuit couples electrically to the carbon fiber allowing the support structure to be used both for detector grounding and a low impedance connection between the remotely mounted hybrids and the sensors.

Abstract:We present a scintillator based detector able to measure both spatial and energy information at High repetition rate (HRR) with a relatively simple design. It has been built at the Center of Pulsed Laser (CLPU) in Salamanca and tested in the proton accelerator at the Centro de Micro-Analisis de Materiales (CMAM) in Madrid. The detector has been demonstrated to work in HRR mode by reproducing the performance of the radiochromic film detector. It represents a new class of on-line detectors for Laser-plasma physics experiments in the new emerging High Power and HRR laser systems.
