Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition is established for the strict inequality $p_c(G_*)<p_c(G)$ between the critical probabilities of site percolation on a quasi-transitive, plane graph $G$ and on its matching graph $G_*$. It is assumed that $G$ is properly embedded in either the Euclidean or the hyperbolic plane. When $G$ is transitive, strict inequality holds if and only if $G$ is not a triangulation. The basic approach is the standard method of enhancements, but its implemention has complexity arising from the non-Euclidean (hyperbolic) space, the study of site (rather than bond) percolation, and the generality of the assumption of quasi-transitivity. This result is complementary to the work of the authors ("Hyperbolic site percolation", <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2203.00981" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.00981">arXiv:2203.00981</a>) on the equality $p_u(G) + p_c(G_*) = 1$, where $p_u$ is the critical probability for the existence of a unique infinite open cluster. It implies for transitive $G$ that $p_u(G) + p_c(G) \ge 1$, with equality if and only if $G$ is a triangulation.

Abstract:We consider oriented bond or site percolation on ℤ d +. In the case of bond percolation we denote by P p the probability measure on configurations of open and closed bonds which makes all bonds of ℤ d + independent, and for which P p {e is open} = 1 −P p e {is closed} = p for each fixed edge e of ℤ d +. We take X(e) = 1 (0) if e is open (respectively, closed). We say that ρ-percolation occurs for some given 0 < ρ≤ 1, if there exists an oriented infinite path v0 = 0, v1, v2, …, starting at the origin, such that lim inf n →∞ (1/n) ∑ i=1 n X(e i ) ≥ρ, where e i is the edge {v i−1 , v i }. [MZ92] showed that there exists a critical probability p c = p c (ρ, d) = p c (ρ, d, bond) such that there is a.s. no ρ-percolation for p < p c and that P p {ρ-percolation occurs} > 0 for p > p c . Here we find lim d →∞d 1/ρ p c (ρd, bond) = D 1 , say. We also find the limit for the analogous quantity for site percolation, that is D2 = lim d →∞d1/ρp c (ρ, d, site). It turns out that for ρ < 1, D 1 < D 2 , and neither of these limits equals the analogous limit for the regular d-ary trees.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the AB-percolation model on Z+d and Zd. Let pHalt(Zd) be the critical probability for AB-percolation on Zd. We show that pHalt(Zd)∼1/(2d2). If the probability of a site to be in state A is γ/(2d2) for some fixed γ>1, then the probability that AB-percolation occurs converges as d→∞ to the unique strictly positive solution y(γ) of the equation y=1−exp(−γy). We also find the limit for the analogous quantities for oriented AB-percolation on Z+d. In particular, pHalt(Z+d)∼2/d2. We further obtain a small extension to the two parameter problem in which even vertices of Zd have probability pA of being in state A and odd vertices have probability pB of being in state B (but without relation between pA and pB). The principal tools in the proofs are a method of Penrose (1993) for asymptotics of percolation on graphs with vertices of high degree and the second moment method.

Abstract:Several results are presented for site percolation on quasi-transitive, planar graphs $G$ with one end, when properly embedded in either the Euclidean or hyperbolic plane. If $(G_1,G_2)$ is a matching pair derived from some quasi-transitive mosaic $M$, then $p_u(G_1)+p_c(G_2)=1$, where $p_c$ is the critical probability for the existence of an infinite cluster, and $p_u$ is the critical value for the existence of a unique such cluster. This fulfils and extends to the hyperbolic plane an observation of Sykes and Essam(1964), and it extends to quasi-transitive site models a theorem of Benjamini and Schramm (Theorem 3.8, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 14 (2001) 487--507) for transitive bond percolation. It follows that $p_u (G)+p_c (G_*)=p_u(G_*)+p_c(G)=1$, where $G_*$ denotes the matching graph of $G$. In particular, $p_u(G)+p_c(G)\ge 1$ and hence, when $G$ is amenable we have $p_c(G)=p_u(G) \ge \frac12$. When combined with the main result of the companion paper by the same authors ("Percolation critical probabilities of matching lattice-pairs", Random Struct. Alg. 2024), we obtain for transitive $G$ that the strict inequality $p_u(G)+p_c(G)> 1$ holds if and only if $G$ is not a triangulation. A key technique is a method for expressing a planar site percolation process on a matching pair in terms of a dependent bond process on the corresponding dual pair of graphs. Amongst other things, the results reported here answer positively two conjectures of Benjamini and Schramm (Conjectures 7 and 8, Electron. Comm. Probab. 1 (1996) 71--82) in the case of quasi-transitive graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the corrector method we give another proof of the quenched invariance principle for the random walk on the infinite random graph generated by a one-dimensional long-range percolation under the conditions that the connection probability p(1)=1 and the percolation exponent s>2. The key step of the proof is the construction of the corrector. We show that the corrector can be constructed under either s∈(2,3] or s>3, though the corresponding underlying measures may be different. As an application of the main result we get a new lower bound of the quenched diagonal transition probability for the random walk.
Strict inequality for the chemical distance exponent in two-dimensional critical percolation

Abstract:We provide the first nontrivial upper bound for the chemical distance exponent in two-dimensional critical percolation. Specifically, we prove that the expected length of the shortest horizontal crossing path of a box of side length $n$ in critical percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is bounded by $Cn^{2-\delta}\pi_3(n)$, for some $\delta>0$, where $\pi_3(n)$ is the "three-arm probability to distance $n$." This implies that the ratio of this length to the length of the lowest crossing is bounded by an inverse power of $n$ with high probability. In the case of site percolation on the triangular lattice, we obtain a strict upper bound for the exponent of $4/3$. The proof builds on the strategy developed in our previous paper, but with a new iterative scheme, and a new large deviation inequality for events in annuli conditional on arm events, which may be of independent interest.

The consideration generalizes the recently obtained thresholds of Scullard and Ziff for bond and site percolation on the martini and related lattices to the Potts model and to other lattices.

Abstract:The probability of simultaneous occurence of at least k spanning clusters has been studied by Monte Carlo simulations on the 2D square lattice at the bond percolation threshold Pc=1/2. The calculated probabilities for free boundary conditions and periodic boundary conditions are in a very good coincidence with the exact formulae developed recently by Cardy.

Abstract:We prove a remarkable combinatorial symmetry in the number of spanning configurations in site percolation: for a large class of lattices, the number of spanning configurations with an odd or even number of occupied sites differs by $\pm 1$. In particular, this symmetry implies that the total number of spanning configurations is always odd, independent of the size or shape of the lattice. The class of lattices that share this symmetry includes the square lattice and the hypercubic lattice in any dimension, with a wide variety of boundary conditions.

An upper bound on geodesic length in 2D critical first-passage percolation

Abstract:We consider i.i.d. first-passage percolation (FPP) on the two-dimensional square lattice, in the critical case where edge-weights take the value zero with probability $1/2$. Critical FPP is unique in that the Euclidean lengths of geodesics are superlinear, rather than linear, in the distance between their endpoints. This fact was speculated by Kesten in 1986 but not confirmed until 2019 by Damron and Tang, who showed a lower bound on geodesic length that is polynomial with degree strictly greater than $1$. In this paper we establish the first non-trivial upper bound. Namely, we prove that for a large class of critical edge-weight distributions, the shortest geodesic from the origin to a box of radius $R$ uses at most $R^{2+\epsilon}\pi_3(R)$ edges with high probability, for any $\epsilon > 0$. Here $\pi_3(R)$ is the polychromatic 3-arm probability from classical Bernoulli percolation; upon inserting its conjectural asymptotic, our bound converts to $R^{4/3 + \epsilon}$. In any case, it is known that $\pi_3(R) \lesssim R^{-\delta}$ for some $\delta > 0$, and so our bound gives an exponent strictly less than $2$. In the special case of Bernoulli($1/2$) edge-weights, we replace the additional factor of $R^\epsilon$ with a constant and give an expectation bound.

Abstract:We summarize several decades of work in finding values for the percolation threshold p_c for site percolation on the square lattice, the universal correction-to-scaling exponent Omega, and the susceptibility amplitude ratio C^+/C^-, in two dimensions. Recent studies have yielded the precise values p_c = 0.59274602(4), Omega = 72/91 = 0.791, and C^+/C^- = 161.5(1.5), resolving long-standing controversies about the last two quantities and verifying the widely used value p_c = 0.592746 for the first.

Abstract:We introduce a method for translating any upper bound on the percolation threshold of a lattice $G$ into a lower bound on the exponential growth rate $a(G)$ of lattice animals and vice-versa. We exploit this in both directions. We improve on the best known asymptotic lower and upper bounds on $a(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ as $d\to \infty$. We use percolation as a tool to obtain the latter, and conversely we use the former to obtain lower bounds on $p_c(\mathbb{Z}^d)$. We obtain the rigorous lower bound $\dot{p}_c(\mathbb{Z}^3)>0.2522$ for 3-dimensional site percolation.

Existence of subcritical percolation phases for generalised weight-dependent random connection models

Abstract:We derive a sufficient condition for the existence of a subcritical percolation phase for a wide range of continuum percolation models where each vertex is embedded into Euclidean space according to an iid-marked stationary Poisson point process. In contrast to many established models, the probability of existence of an edge may not only depend on the distance and the weights of its end vertices but also on a surrounding vertex set. Our results can be applied in particular to models combining heavy-tailed degree distributions and long-range effects, which are typically well connected. More precisely, we study the critical annulus-crossing intensity $\widehat{\lambda}_c$ which is smaller or equal to the classical critical percolation intensity $\lambda_c$ and derive sharp conditions for $\widehat{\lambda}_c>0$ by controlling the occurrence of long edges. We further present tail bounds for the Euclidean diameter and number of points of the typical cluster in the subcritical phase and apply our results to several examples including some in which $\widehat{\lambda}_c<\lambda_c$.

Abstract:In this work, we study the random metric for the critical long-range percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. A recent work by Bäumler [3] implies the subsequential scaling limit, and our main contribution is to prove that the subsequential limit is uniquely characterized by a natural list of axioms. Our proof method is hugely inspired by recent works of Gwynne and Miller [42], and Ding and Gwynne [25] on the uniqueness of Liouville quantum gravity metrics.

Abstract:Liouville first passage percolation (LFPP) with the parameter ξ > 0 is the family of random distance functions {D_h^ϵ}_ ϵ > 0 on the plane obtained by integrating e^ξh_ϵ along paths, where h ∊ ∊ >0 is a smooth mollification of the planar Gaussian free field. Recent works have shown that for all ξ > 0, the LFPP metrics, appropriately re-scaled, admit non-trivial subsequential limiting metrics. In the case ξ < ξ crit ≈ 0.41, it has been shown that the subsequential limit is unique and defines a metric on γ -Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) γ = γ( ξ ) ∈ (0, 2). We prove that for all ξ > 0, each possible subsequential limiting metric is nearly bi-Lipschitz equivalent to the LFPP metric D_h^ϵ when ∊ is small, even if ∊ does not belong to the appropriate subsequence. Using this result, we obtain bounds for the scaling constants for LFPP which are sharp up to polylogarithmic factors. We also prove that any two subsequential limiting metrics are bi-Lipschitz equivalent. Our results are an input in subsequent works which shows that the subsequential limits of LFPP induce the same topology as the Euclidean metric when ξ = ξ crit and that the subsequential limit of LFPP is unique when ξ ≽ ξ crit .

Abstract:We study critical site percolation on the triangular lattice. We find the difference of the probabilities of having a percolation interface to the right and to the left of two given points in the scaling limit. This generalizes both Cardy's and Schramm's formulae. The generalization involves a new interesting discrete analytic observable and an unexpected conformal mapping.
