Abstract:The scaling limit of crossing probabilities is believed to satisfy a conformal mapping formula, called Cardy's formula, in two-dimensional percolation at the criticality. The formula has been confirmed to hold for site percolation on the equilateral triangular lattice. In this paper, we show that Cardy's formula could not hold for some two-dimensional triangular and square-type lattices, in particular for some periodic 2D graphs.

Abstract:We consider oriented bond or site percolation on ℤ d +. In the case of bond percolation we denote by P p the probability measure on configurations of open and closed bonds which makes all bonds of ℤ d + independent, and for which P p {e is open} = 1 −P p e {is closed} = p for each fixed edge e of ℤ d +. We take X(e) = 1 (0) if e is open (respectively, closed). We say that ρ-percolation occurs for some given 0 < ρ≤ 1, if there exists an oriented infinite path v0 = 0, v1, v2, …, starting at the origin, such that lim inf n →∞ (1/n) ∑ i=1 n X(e i ) ≥ρ, where e i is the edge {v i−1 , v i }. [MZ92] showed that there exists a critical probability p c = p c (ρ, d) = p c (ρ, d, bond) such that there is a.s. no ρ-percolation for p < p c and that P p {ρ-percolation occurs} > 0 for p > p c . Here we find lim d →∞d 1/ρ p c (ρd, bond) = D 1 , say. We also find the limit for the analogous quantity for site percolation, that is D2 = lim d →∞d1/ρp c (ρ, d, site). It turns out that for ρ < 1, D 1 < D 2 , and neither of these limits equals the analogous limit for the regular d-ary trees.

Abstract:Percolation on a plane is usually associated with clusters spanning two opposite sides of a rectangular system. Here we investigate three-leg clusters generated on a square lattice and spanning the three sides of equilateral triangles. If the position and orientation of the triangles relative to the lattice are uniformly randomized, one obtains an efficient method of determining the percolation threshold, on par with the most advanced Monte Carlo methods developed for the rectangular geometry. The universal crossing probability for three-leg clusters is geometry-independent, which opens a way for further improvements of the method.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the corrector method we give another proof of the quenched invariance principle for the random walk on the infinite random graph generated by a one-dimensional long-range percolation under the conditions that the connection probability p(1)=1 and the percolation exponent s>2. The key step of the proof is the construction of the corrector. We show that the corrector can be constructed under either s∈(2,3] or s>3, though the corresponding underlying measures may be different. As an application of the main result we get a new lower bound of the quenched diagonal transition probability for the random walk.

Abstract:We study critical site percolation on the triangular lattice. We find the difference of the probabilities of having a percolation interface to the right and to the left of two given points in the scaling limit. This generalizes both Cardy's and Schramm's formulae. The generalization involves a new interesting discrete analytic observable and an unexpected conformal mapping.

Abstract:We extend Smirnov's proof of the existence and conformal invariance of the scaling limit of critical site-percolation on the triangular lattice to particular sequences of periodic graphs with more arbitrary large-scale structure, obtained by piecing together triangular regions of the triangular lattice. While not formally speaking a scaling limit statement (as the graphs are not rescaled versions of each other), the result is a weak form of universality for critical percolation.

Abstract:In this paper we present the proof of the convergence of the critical bond percolation exploration process on the square lattice to the trace of SLE$_{6}$. This is an important conjecture in mathematical physics and probability. The case of critical site percolation on the hexagonal lattice was established in the seminal work of Smirnov via proving Cardy's formula. Our proof uses a series of transformations and conditioning to construct a pair of paths: the $+\partial$CBP and the $-\partial$CBP. The convergence in the site percolation case on the hexagonal lattice allows us to obtain certain estimates on the scaling limit of the $+\partial$CBP and the $-\partial$CBP. By considering a path which is the concatenation of $+\partial$CBPs and $-\partial$CBPs in an alternating manner, we can prove the convergence in the case of bond percolation on the square lattice.

Abstract:We consider Bernoulli first-passage percolation on the triangular lattice in which sites have 0 and 1 passage times with probability $p$ and $1-p$, respectively. For each $p\in(0,p_c)$, let $\mathcal {B}(p)$ be the limit shape in the classical "shape theorem", and let $L(p)$ be the correlation length. We show that as $p\uparrow p_c$, the rescaled limit shape $L(p)^{-1}\mathcal {B}(p)$ converges to a Euclidean disk. This improves a result of Chayes et al. [J. Stat. Phys. 45 (1986) 933--951]. The proof relies on the scaling limit of near-critical percolation established by Garban et al. [J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018) 1195--1268], and uses the construction of the collection of continuum clusters in the scaling limit introduced by Camia et al. [Springer Proceedings in Mathematics \& Statistics, 299 (2019) 44--89].

Strict inequality for the chemical distance exponent in two-dimensional critical percolation

Abstract:We provide the first nontrivial upper bound for the chemical distance exponent in two-dimensional critical percolation. Specifically, we prove that the expected length of the shortest horizontal crossing path of a box of side length $n$ in critical percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is bounded by $Cn^{2-\delta}\pi_3(n)$, for some $\delta>0$, where $\pi_3(n)$ is the "three-arm probability to distance $n$." This implies that the ratio of this length to the length of the lowest crossing is bounded by an inverse power of $n$ with high probability. In the case of site percolation on the triangular lattice, we obtain a strict upper bound for the exponent of $4/3$. The proof builds on the strategy developed in our previous paper, but with a new iterative scheme, and a new large deviation inequality for events in annuli conditional on arm events, which may be of independent interest.

Scaling limits for random walks on long range percolation clusters

Abstract:We study limit laws for simple random walks on supercritical long-range percolation clusters on the integer lattice. For the long range percolation model, the probability that two vertices are connected behaves asymptotically as a negative power of distance between them. We prove that the scaling limit of simple random walk on the infinite component converges to an isotropic alpha-stable Levy process. This complements the work of Crawford and Sly, who proved the corresponding result for alpha between 0 and 1. The convergence holds in both the quenched and annealed senses.

Abstract:The scaling behavior of the closed trajectories of a moving particle generated by randomly placed rotators or mirrors on a square or triangular lattice is studied numerically. For most concentrations of the scatterers the trajectories close exponentially fast. For special critical concentrations infinitely extended trajectories can occur which exhibit a scaling behavior similar to that of the perimeters of percolation clusters. In addition to the two critical exponents $\tau=15/7$ and $d_{f}=7/4$ found before, the critical exponent $\sigma=3/7$, which is associated with the scaling function for trajectory size away from criticality, also appears. This exponent determines structural scaling properties of closed trajectories of finite size when they approach infinity, at criticality. New scaling behavior was found for the square lattice partially occupied by rotators, indicating a different universality class from that of percolation clusters. An argument for the scaling behavior found along the critical lines is presented.

Abstract:The probability of simultaneous occurence of at least k spanning clusters has been studied by Monte Carlo simulations on the 2D square lattice at the bond percolation threshold Pc=1/2. The calculated probabilities for free boundary conditions and periodic boundary conditions are in a very good coincidence with the exact formulae developed recently by Cardy.

Annulus crossing formulae for critical planar percolation

Abstract:We derive exact formulae for three basic annulus crossing events for the critical planar Bernoulli percolation in the continuum limit. The first is for the probability that there is an open path connecting the two boundaries of an annulus of inner radius $r$ and outer radius $R$. The second is for the probability that there are both open and closed paths connecting the two annulus boundaries. These two results were predicted by Cardy based on non-rigorous Coulomb gas arguments. Our third result gives the probability that there are two disjoint open paths connecting the two boundaries. Its leading asymptotic as $r/R\to 0$ is captured by the so-called backbone exponent, a transcendental number recently determined by Nolin, Qian and two of the authors. This exponent is the unique real root to the equation $\frac{\sqrt{36 x +3}}{4} + \sin (\frac{2 \pi \sqrt{12 x +1}}{3} ) =0$, other than $-\frac{1}{12}$ and $\frac{1}{4}$. Besides these three real roots, this equation has countably many complex roots. Our third result shows that these roots appear exactly as exponents of the subleading terms in the crossing formula. This suggests that the backbone exponent is part of a conformal field theory (CFT) whose bulk spectrum contains this set of roots. Expanding the same crossing probability as $r/R\to 1$, we obtain a series with logarithmic corrections at every order, suggesting that the backbone exponent is related to a logarithmic boundary CFT. Our proofs are based on the coupling between SLE curves and Liouville quantum gravity (LQG). The key is to encode the annulus crossing probabilities by the random moduli of certain LQG surfaces with annular topology, whose law can be extracted from the dependence of the LQG annuli partition function on their boundary lengths.

Abstract:Fitting percolation into the conformal field theory framework requires showing that connection probabilities have a conformally invariant scaling limit. For critical site percolation on the triangular lattice, we prove that the probability that $n$ vertices belong to the same open cluster has a well-defined scaling limit for every $n \geq 2$. Moreover, the limiting functions $P_n(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ transform covariantly under Möbius transformations of the plane as well as under local conformal maps, i.e., they behave like correlation functions of primary operators in conformal field theory. In particular, they are invariant under translations, rotations and inversions, and $P_n(sx_1,\ldots,sx_n)=s^{-5n/48}P_n(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ for any $s>0$. This implies that $P_{2}(x_1,x_2)=C_2 \Vert x_1-x_2 \Vert^{-5/24}$ and $P_3(x_1,x_2,x_3) = C_3 \Vert x_1-x_2 \Vert^{-5/48} \Vert x_1-x_3 \Vert^{-5/48} \Vert x_2-x_3 \Vert^{-5/48}$, for some constants $C_2$ and $C_3$. We also define a site-diluted spin model whose $n$-point correlation functions $\mathrm{C}_{n}$ can be expressed in terms of percolation connection probabilities and, as a consequence, have a well-defined scaling limit with the same properties as the functions $P_n$. In particular, $\mathrm{C}_{2}(x_1,x_2)=P_{2}(x_1,x_2)$. We prove that the magnetization field associated with this spin model has a well-defined scaling limit in an appropriate space of distributions. The limiting field transforms covariantly under Möbius transformations with exponent (scaling dimension) $5/48$. A heuristic analysis of the four-point function of the magnetization field suggests the presence of an additional conformal field of scaling dimension $5/4$, which counts the number of percolation four-arm events and can be identified with the so-called "four-leg operator'' of conformal field theory.

Abstract:We study the connected components in critical percolation on the Hamming hypercube $\{0,1\}^m$. We show that their sizes rescaled by $2^{-2m/3}$ converge in distribution, and that, considered as metric measure spaces with the graph distance rescaled by $2^{-m/3}$ and the uniform measure, they converge in distribution with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov topology. The two corresponding limits are as in critical Erdős-Rényi graphs.

Abstract:Despite great progress in the study of critical percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for $d$ large, properties of critical clusters in high-dimensional fractional spaces and boxes remain poorly understood, unlike the situation in two dimensions. Closely related models such as critical branching random walk give natural conjectures for the value of the relevant high-dimensional critical exponents; see in particular the conjecture by Kozma-Nachmias that the probability that $0$ and $(n, n, n, \ldots)$ are connected within $[-n,n]^d$ scales as $n^{-2-2d}$. In this paper, we study the properties of critical clusters in high-dimensional half-spaces and boxes. In half-spaces, we show that the probability of an open connection ("arm") from $0$ to the boundary of a sidelength $n$ box scales as $n^{-3}$. We also find the scaling of the half-space two-point function (the probability of an open connection between two vertices) and the tail of the cluster size distribution. In boxes, we obtain the scaling of the two-point function between vertices which are any macroscopic distance away from the boundary.

Abstract:We report on the exact treatment of a random-matrix representation of bond percolation model on a square lattice in two dimensions with occupation probability $p$. The percolation problem is mapped onto a random complex matrix composed of two random real-valued matrices of elements $+1$ and $-1$ with probability $p$ and $1-p$, respectively. We find that the onset of percolation transition can be detected by the emergence of power-law divergences due to the coalescence of the first two extreme eigenvalues in the thermodynamic limit. We develop a universal finite-size scaling law that fully characterizes the scaling behavior of the extreme eigenvalue's fluctuation in terms of a set of universal scaling exponents and amplitudes. We make use of the relative entropy as an index of the disparity between two distributions of the first and second-largest extreme eigenvalues, to show that its minimum underlies the scaling framework. Our study may provide an inroad for developing new methods and algorithms with diverse applications in machine learning, complex systems, and statistical physics.

Abstract:We divide the circular boundary of a hyperbolic lattice into four equal intervals and study the probability of a percolation crossing between an opposite pair as a function of the bond occupation probability p. We consider the {7,3} (heptagonal), enhanced or extended binary tree (EBT), the EBT-dual, and the {5,5} (pentagonal) lattices. We find that the crossing probability increases gradually from 0 to 1 as p increases from the lower p_{l} to the upper p_{u} critical values. We find bounds and estimates for the values of p_{l} and p_{u} for these lattices and identify the self-duality point p corresponding to where the crossing probability equals 1/2. Comparison is made with recent numerical and theoretical results.
