Abstract:We conjecture a new correlation-like inequality for percolation probabilities and support our conjecture with numerical evidence and a few special cases which we prove. This inequality, if true, implies that there is no percolation at criticality on the Euclidean lattice, for any dimension bigger than one.

Abstract:We consider oriented bond or site percolation on ℤ d +. In the case of bond percolation we denote by P p the probability measure on configurations of open and closed bonds which makes all bonds of ℤ d + independent, and for which P p {e is open} = 1 −P p e {is closed} = p for each fixed edge e of ℤ d +. We take X(e) = 1 (0) if e is open (respectively, closed). We say that ρ-percolation occurs for some given 0 < ρ≤ 1, if there exists an oriented infinite path v0 = 0, v1, v2, …, starting at the origin, such that lim inf n →∞ (1/n) ∑ i=1 n X(e i ) ≥ρ, where e i is the edge {v i−1 , v i }. [MZ92] showed that there exists a critical probability p c = p c (ρ, d) = p c (ρ, d, bond) such that there is a.s. no ρ-percolation for p < p c and that P p {ρ-percolation occurs} > 0 for p > p c . Here we find lim d →∞d 1/ρ p c (ρd, bond) = D 1 , say. We also find the limit for the analogous quantity for site percolation, that is D2 = lim d →∞d1/ρp c (ρ, d, site). It turns out that for ρ < 1, D 1 < D 2 , and neither of these limits equals the analogous limit for the regular d-ary trees.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the AB-percolation model on Z+d and Zd. Let pHalt(Zd) be the critical probability for AB-percolation on Zd. We show that pHalt(Zd)∼1/(2d2). If the probability of a site to be in state A is γ/(2d2) for some fixed γ>1, then the probability that AB-percolation occurs converges as d→∞ to the unique strictly positive solution y(γ) of the equation y=1−exp(−γy). We also find the limit for the analogous quantities for oriented AB-percolation on Z+d. In particular, pHalt(Z+d)∼2/d2. We further obtain a small extension to the two parameter problem in which even vertices of Zd have probability pA of being in state A and odd vertices have probability pB of being in state B (but without relation between pA and pB). The principal tools in the proofs are a method of Penrose (1993) for asymptotics of percolation on graphs with vertices of high degree and the second moment method.
Strict inequalities for arm exponents in planar percolation

Abstract:We discuss a general method to prove quantitative improvements on correlation inequalities and apply it to arm estimates for Bernoulli bond percolation on the square lattice. Our first result is that the two-arm exponent is strictly larger than twice the one-arm exponent and can be seen as a quantitative improvement on the Harris-FKG inequality. This answers a question of Garban and Steif, which was motivated by the study of exceptional times in dynamical percolation. Our second result is that the monochromatic arm exponents are strictly larger than their polychromatic versions, and can be seen as a quantitative improvement on Reimer's main lemma. This second result is not new and was already proved by Beffara and Nolin using a different argument.

Abstract:We provide the first nontrivial upper bound for the chemical distance exponent in two-dimensional critical percolation. Specifically, we prove that the expected length of the shortest horizontal crossing path of a box of side length $n$ in critical percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is bounded by $Cn^{2-\delta}\pi_3(n)$, for some $\delta>0$, where $\pi_3(n)$ is the "three-arm probability to distance $n$." This implies that the ratio of this length to the length of the lowest crossing is bounded by an inverse power of $n$ with high probability. In the case of site percolation on the triangular lattice, we obtain a strict upper bound for the exponent of $4/3$. The proof builds on the strategy developed in our previous paper, but with a new iterative scheme, and a new large deviation inequality for events in annuli conditional on arm events, which may be of independent interest.

Provided the critical exponents $\delta$ and $2-\eta$ defined by $\delta = \lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{-\log(n)}{\log\left(\mathbb{P}_{\beta_c}\left(|K_0|\geq n\right)\right)}$ and $2-\eta = \lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{\log\left(\mathbb{P}_{\beta_c}\left(0\leftrightarrow x\right)\right)}{\log(\|x\|)} + d$ exist, where $K_0$ is the cluster containing the origin, we show that \begin{equation*} \delta \geq \frac{d+(\alpha\wedge 1)}{d-(\alpha\wedge 1)} \ \text{ and } \ 2-\eta \geq \alpha \wedge 1 \text. \end{equation*} The lower bound on $\delta$ is believed to be sharp for $d = 1, \alpha \in \left[\frac{1}{3},1\right)$ and for $d = 2, \alpha \in \left[\frac{2}{3},1\right]$, whereas the lower bound on $2-\eta$ is sharp for $d=1, \alpha \in (0,1)$, and for $\alpha \in \left(0,1\right]$ for $d>1$, and is not believed to be sharp otherwise. Our main tool is a connection between the critical exponents and the isoperimetry of cubes inside $\mathbb{Z}^d$.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the corrector method we give another proof of the quenched invariance principle for the random walk on the infinite random graph generated by a one-dimensional long-range percolation under the conditions that the connection probability p(1)=1 and the percolation exponent s>2. The key step of the proof is the construction of the corrector. We show that the corrector can be constructed under either s∈(2,3] or s>3, though the corresponding underlying measures may be different. As an application of the main result we get a new lower bound of the quenched diagonal transition probability for the random walk.

Abstract:We prove two results concerning percolation on general graphs. - We establish the converse of the classical Peierls argument: if the critical parameter for (uniform) percolation satisfies $p_c<1$, then the number of minimal cutsets of size $n$ separating a given vertex from infinity is bounded above exponentially in $n$. This resolves a conjecture of Babson and Benjamini from 1999. - We prove that $p_c<1$ for every uniformly transient graph. This solves a problem raised by Duminil-Copin, Goswami, Raoufi, Severo and Yadin, and provides a new proof that $p_c<1$ for every transitive graph of superlinear growth.

Critical exponents of correlated percolation of sites not visited by a random walk

Abstract:We consider a $d$-dimensional correlated percolation problem of sites {\em not} visited by a random walk on a hypercubic lattice $L^d$ for $d=3$, 4 and 5. The length of the random walk is ${\cal N}=uL^d$. Close to the critical value $u=u_c$, many geometrical properties of the problem can be described as powers (critical exponents) of $u_c-u$, such as $\beta$, which controls the strength of the spanning cluster, and $\gamma$, which characterizes the behavior of the mean finite cluster size $S$. We show that at $u_c$ the ratio between the mean mass of the largest cluster $M_1$ and the mass of the second largest cluster $M_2$ is independent of $L$ and can be used to find $u_c$. We calculate $\beta$ from the $L$-dependence of $M_2$ and $\gamma$ from the finite size scaling of $S$. The resulting exponent $\beta$ remains close to 1 in all dimensions. The exponent $\gamma$ decreases from $\approx 3.9$ in $d=3$ to $\approx1.9$ in $d=4$ and $\approx 1.3$ in $d=5$ towards $\gamma=1$ expected in $d=6$, which is close to $\gamma=4/(d-2)$.

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition is established for the strict inequality $p_c(G_*)<p_c(G)$ between the critical probabilities of site percolation on a quasi-transitive, plane graph $G$ and on its matching graph $G_*$. It is assumed that $G$ is properly embedded in either the Euclidean or the hyperbolic plane. When $G$ is transitive, strict inequality holds if and only if $G$ is not a triangulation. The basic approach is the standard method of enhancements, but its implemention has complexity arising from the non-Euclidean (hyperbolic) space, the study of site (rather than bond) percolation, and the generality of the assumption of quasi-transitivity. This result is complementary to the work of the authors ("Hyperbolic site percolation", <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2203.00981" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.00981">arXiv:2203.00981</a>) on the equality $p_u(G) + p_c(G_*) = 1$, where $p_u$ is the critical probability for the existence of a unique infinite open cluster. It implies for transitive $G$ that $p_u(G) + p_c(G) \ge 1$, with equality if and only if $G$ is a triangulation.

Abstract:We prove Schramm's locality conjecture for Bernoulli bond percolation on transitive graphs: If $(G_n)_{n\geq 1}$ is a sequence of infinite vertex-transitive graphs converging locally to a vertex-transitive graph $G$ and $p_c(G_n) \neq 1$ for every $n \geq 1$ then $\lim_{n\to\infty} p_c(G_n)=p_c(G)$. Equivalently, the critical probability $p_c$ defines a continuous function on the space $\mathcal{G}^*$ of infinite vertex-transitive graphs that are not one-dimensional. As a corollary of the proof, we obtain a new proof that $p_c(G)<1$ for every infinite vertex-transitive graph that is not one-dimensional.

Abstract:Despite great progress in the study of critical percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for $d$ large, properties of critical clusters in high-dimensional fractional spaces and boxes remain poorly understood, unlike the situation in two dimensions. Closely related models such as critical branching random walk give natural conjectures for the value of the relevant high-dimensional critical exponents; see in particular the conjecture by Kozma-Nachmias that the probability that $0$ and $(n, n, n, \ldots)$ are connected within $[-n,n]^d$ scales as $n^{-2-2d}$. In this paper, we study the properties of critical clusters in high-dimensional half-spaces and boxes. In half-spaces, we show that the probability of an open connection ("arm") from $0$ to the boundary of a sidelength $n$ box scales as $n^{-3}$. We also find the scaling of the half-space two-point function (the probability of an open connection between two vertices) and the tail of the cluster size distribution. In boxes, we obtain the scaling of the two-point function between vertices which are any macroscopic distance away from the boundary.

Abstract:For the range-R bond percolation in d=4,5,6, we obtain a lower bound for the critical probability p_c for R large, agreeing with the conjectured asymptotics and thus complementing the corresponding results of Van der Hofstad-Sakai (2005) for d>6, and Frei-Perkins (2016), Hong (2021) for d<4. The proof follows by showing the extinction of the associated SIR epidemic model and introducing a self-avoiding branching random walk where births onto visited sites are suppressed and the total range of which dominates that of the SIR epidemic process.

Abstract:We summarize several decades of work in finding values for the percolation threshold p_c for site percolation on the square lattice, the universal correction-to-scaling exponent Omega, and the susceptibility amplitude ratio C^+/C^-, in two dimensions. Recent studies have yielded the precise values p_c = 0.59274602(4), Omega = 72/91 = 0.791, and C^+/C^- = 161.5(1.5), resolving long-standing controversies about the last two quantities and verifying the widely used value p_c = 0.592746 for the first.

An upper bound on geodesic length in 2D critical first-passage percolation

Abstract:We consider i.i.d. first-passage percolation (FPP) on the two-dimensional square lattice, in the critical case where edge-weights take the value zero with probability $1/2$. Critical FPP is unique in that the Euclidean lengths of geodesics are superlinear, rather than linear, in the distance between their endpoints. This fact was speculated by Kesten in 1986 but not confirmed until 2019 by Damron and Tang, who showed a lower bound on geodesic length that is polynomial with degree strictly greater than $1$. In this paper we establish the first non-trivial upper bound. Namely, we prove that for a large class of critical edge-weight distributions, the shortest geodesic from the origin to a box of radius $R$ uses at most $R^{2+\epsilon}\pi_3(R)$ edges with high probability, for any $\epsilon > 0$. Here $\pi_3(R)$ is the polychromatic 3-arm probability from classical Bernoulli percolation; upon inserting its conjectural asymptotic, our bound converts to $R^{4/3 + \epsilon}$. In any case, it is known that $\pi_3(R) \lesssim R^{-\delta}$ for some $\delta > 0$, and so our bound gives an exponent strictly less than $2$. In the special case of Bernoulli($1/2$) edge-weights, we replace the additional factor of $R^\epsilon$ with a constant and give an expectation bound.

Isoperimetric Inequalities and Supercritical Percolation on High-dimensional Graphs

Abstract:It is known that many different types of finite random subgraph models undergo quantitatively similar phase transitions around their percolation thresholds, and the proofs of these results rely on isoperimetric properties of the underlying host graph. Recently, the authors showed that such a phase transition occurs in a large class of regular high-dimensional product graphs, generalising a classic result for the hypercube. In this paper we give new isoperimetric inequalities for such regular high-dimensional product graphs, which generalise the well-known isoperimetric inequality of Harper for the hypercube, and are asymptotically sharp for a wide range of set sizes. We then use these isoperimetric properties to investigate the structure of the giant component $L_1$ in supercritical percolation on these product graphs, that is, when $p=\frac{1+\epsilon}{d}$, where $d$ is the degree of the product graph and $\epsilon>0$ is a small enough constant. We show that typically $L_1$ has edge-expansion $\Omega\left(\frac{1}{d\ln d}\right)$. Furthermore, we show that $L_1$ likely contains a linear-sized subgraph with vertex-expansion $\Omega\left(\frac{1}{d\ln d}\right)$. These results are best possible up to the logarithmic factor in $d$. Using these likely expansion properties, we determine, up to small polylogarithmic factors in $d$, the likely diameter of $L_1$ as well as the typical mixing time of a lazy random walk on $L_1$. Furthermore, we show the likely existence of a path of length $\Omega\left(\frac{n}{d\ln d}\right)$. These results not only generalise, but also improve substantially upon the known bounds in the case of the hypercube, where in particular the likely diameter and typical mixing time of $L_1$ were previously only known to be polynomial in $d$.

Critical site percolation and cutsets

Abstract:In 2003, Kahn conjectured a characterization of the critical percolation probability $p_c$ in terms of vertex cut sets (\cite{JK03}). Later, Lyons and Peres (2016) conjectured a similar characterization of $p_c$ , but in terms of edge cut sets (\cite{LP16}). Both conjectures were subsequently proven by Tang (\cite{pt23}) for bond percolation and site percolation on bounded-degree graphs. Tang further conjectured that Kahn's vertex-cut characterization for $p_c^{site}$ and the Lyons-Peres edge-cut characterization for $p_c^{site}$ would hold for site percolation on any infinite, connected, locally finite graph. In this paper, we establish Kahn's vertex-cut characterization for $p_c^{site}$ by adapting arguments from \cite{jmh57a, DCT15}. Additionally, we disprove the Lyons-Peres edge-cut characterization for $p_c^{site}$ by constructing a counterexample.

Abstract:We derive the critical nearest-neighbor connectivity g(n) as 3/4, 3(7 - 9p(c)(tri))/4(5 - p4(c)(tri)), and 3(2 + 7p(c)(tri))/4(5 - p(c)(tri)) for bond percolation on the square, honeycomb, and triangular lattice, respectively, where p(c)(tri) = 2 sin(pi/18) is the percolation threshold for the triangular lattice, and confirm these values via Monte Carlo simulations. On the square lattice, we also numerically determine the critical next-nearest-neighbor connectivity as g(nn) = 0.687 500 0(2), which confirms a conjecture by Mitra and Nienhuis [J. Stat. Mech. (2004) P10006], implying the exact value g(nn) = 11/16. We also determine the connectivity on a free surface as g(n)(surf) = 0.625 000 1(13) and conjecture that this value is exactly equal to 5/8. In addition, we find that at criticality, the connectivities depend on the linear finite size L as similar to Lyt-d, and the associated specific-heat-like quantities C-n and C-nn scale as similar to L2yt-d ln(L/L-0), where d is the lattice dimensionality, y(t) = 1/nu the thermal renormalization exponent, and L-0 a nonuniversal constant. We provide an explanation of this logarithmic factor within the theoretical framework reported recently by Vasseur et al. [J. Stat. Mech. (2012) L07001].
The ant on loops: Alexander-Orbach conjecture for the critical level set of the Gaussian free field

Abstract:Alexander and Orbach (AO) in 1982 conjectured that the simple random walk on critical percolation clusters (also known as the ant in the labyrinth) in Euclidean lattices exhibit mean field behavior; for instance, its spectral dimension is $4/3$. While false in low dimensions, this is expected to be true above the upper critical dimension of six. First rigorous results in this direction go back to Kesten who verified this on the tree. After many developments, in a breakthrough work, Kozma and Nachmias [KN] established the AO conjecture for bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for $d>19$ and $d>6$ for the spread out lattice. We investigate the validity of the AO conjecture for the critical level set of the Gaussian Free Field (GFF), a canonical dependent percolation model of central importance. In an influential work, Lupu proved that for the cable graph of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ (which is obtained by also including the edges), the signed clusters of the associated GFF are given by the corresponding clusters in a Poisson loop soup, thus reducing the analysis to the study of the latter.
