Abstract:The tooth bending fatigue fracture is caused by the alternating loads for the heavy-duty transmission gears. The crack initiation and propagation are the two major parts in the failure process. The crack propagation behavior is mainly affected by initial crack position except for the load and material properties. In this paper, the crack propagation model of a gear is established under the considering of crack initiation location by using extended finite element method (XFEM). The model accuracy is verified by testing results of strain and fractography by conducting the single-tooth bending fatigue experiment. The influence of crack initiation locations on subsequent crack propagation behavior is analyzed. The crack length in the tooth width direction and depth direction is faster when the initial crack is located in the middle of root surface. The crack growth rate is lower for the initial crack located in the surface close to the end surface of the gear.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper This paper aims to investigate the impact of the initial crack position on the crack propagation behavior in heavy-duty transmission gears. Specifically, the authors analyze the effects of different initial crack positions on the crack propagation speed and path by establishing an extended finite element method (XFEM) model. The focus of the paper includes: 1. **Establishment of Crack Propagation Model**: Using the XFEM method to establish a gear crack propagation model, considering the influence of the initial crack position. 2. **Experimental Validation**: Conducting single-tooth bending fatigue tests to measure strain and fracture morphology, thereby validating the accuracy of the model. 3. **Analysis of Crack Propagation Behavior**: Analyzing the impact of different initial crack positions on crack propagation behavior, particularly the propagation speed in the tooth width and depth directions. ### Main Findings - **Crack Propagation Speed**: When the initial crack is located in the middle of the tooth root surface, the crack propagation speed in both the tooth width and depth directions is the fastest. Conversely, when the initial crack is located near the surface of the gear end face, the crack propagation speed is slower. - **Determination of Critical Positions**: Through simulation and experimental results, the critical positions where the crack propagation life is the shortest or longest can be determined, which is significant for evaluating the fatigue life of gears. ### Conclusion This study provides important theoretical and experimental evidence for understanding the crack propagation behavior in heavy-duty transmission gears, which helps optimize gear design and improve their service life.
