Abstract:The research field of photonic crystals (PhCs) remains active on a global scale. PhCs, which are periodic optical nanostructures with the characteristics of excellent light field confinement and numerous varying degrees of freedom, provide a solid foundation for controlling the movement of light. Periodic variation of the index of refraction in two or three spatial dimensions with a substantial high-to-low ratio generates a number of intriguing phenomena and enables a variety of potential functionalities. Recently, intriguing devices based on PhCs, such as Y-branches, small-diameter bent waveguides, and miniature resonator cavities, have been proposed and extensively utilized. PhC waveguides are considered ideal candidates for a variety of applications, such as in power splitters, logic gates, sensing and communication fields, etc. These exceptional characteristics may facilitate the development of a dense integrated circuit. However, PhC technology is still relatively new and therefore requires additional effort to fully exploit it. This paper reviews the most popular and essential optical components based on PhCs, including power splitters, modulators, polarization maintaining devices, sensors, and lasers, to summarize the most recent developments relating this hot topic. These devices have superior performance and a smaller footprint compared to conventional photonic devices.

Abstract:The photnic crystal devices(PhCD)can manipulate the behavior of photons with the advantages such as lower energy loss,smaller size and more easy to integrate on a chip. In this paper some capital design methods and theories of PhCDs were summarized,then the technological difficult points in the fabrication were pointed out and two important coupling technologies were introduced. We also give a perspective about the PhCDs in the end.

Abstract:Photonic crystals have remained a rich ground for scientific efforts all around the world. Conceptual underpinnings, technological manufacturing, and experimental analysis of photonic crystals have all grown substantially in the previous few years. Periodic refractive-index fluctuation in two or three spatial dimensions with a huge high, low ratio causes a number of intriguing phenomena that may be used to create a number of devices. This chapter serves as a quick primer on the same fundamental concept, properties, and applications of photonic crystals.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an overview of milestone achievements in the research and development of photonic crystal structures and their perspective applications. We highlight challenges in the analysis techniques, device design, efficient coupling techniques, and fabrication and characterization techniques for both planar and three-dimensional structures. We discuss extensively progress to date to overcome various aspects in the available modeling and simulation tools as well as the necessary fabrication procedures to produce functional photonic crystal structures and devices. Hence, the goal of the work presented in this paper is to present key building blocks, which will in turn facilitate the full utilization of the unique spatial and temporal properties of photonic crystal structures.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are a new type of synthetic microstructure materials which have periodical refraction index variations in the space and produce photonic band gaps similar to electronic band gaps produced by the crystal potentials of semiconductors. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to the studies of photonic crystals due to their unique abilities to manipulate and control photon behaviors. It presents a brief introduction to the photonic crystal and structure characteristics. Abstract:The idea of photonic crystal came to be when E. Yablonovitch and S. John recommended a structure in 1987 having periodic alteration of refractive index in one or multiple directions. Photonic crystals have the potential to manipulate and tailor the flow of light across the crystal, which gives advantage to invent many photonic devices on the microscopic scale having very small footprints. In recent years several articles have been published on the advances of photonic crystal-based structures. This review article mainly focuses on the several fabrication techniques of photonic crystals and their applications in different fields. Several photonic crystal-based structures such as logic gates, optical sensors, polarization beam splitters, and absorbers for solar cells are reviewed in this paper to show recent advancements on this trending topic. Also, a brief review of the different steps of fabrication of photonic crystals and different fabrication methods proposed by researchers is articulated in this paper.

Abstract:Over the past few years, much work has been devoted to the study of microcavities in photonic crystals (PCs). High-quality factor (Q) PC microcavities exhibit attractive properties since they can confine light in wavelength-scale dimensions, making them potentially useful not only for photonic integration but also in quantum optics. Most of the high-Q PC microcavities are realized in slabs (PCSs), which are two-dimensional (2D) PCs with a high refractive index core layer providing light confinement in the third dimension. The key to design high-Q cavities is to reduce the radiation losses, i.e., to minimize the spatial Fourier components above the light line of the PCS. This chapter will focus on high-Q PC microcavity, including design rules, characterization methods, device demonstrations, and applications.

Abstract:Control of spontaneous emission is crucial to quantum optics and optical devices. It is essential for diverse applications ranging from miniature lasers, light-emitting diodes, and quantum information to solar energy harvesting. Photonic crystals (PCs) have the capacity to optimize the emission properties of active materials which provide an efficient strategy to construct highly efficient lighting devices, low-threshold lasers, sensitive fluorescent sensors, and so on. Colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs) are close-packed ordered arrays self-assembled from monodispersed colloid spheres. The self-assembled CPCs have great advantages of low cost, flexibility, and easy processability which show great potential for create captivating and diverse photonic structures for new photonic materials and devices. Here, we summarize the recent advantages of the CPC fabrication and its superior capacity for luminescence enhancement. Based on the current research studies, we offer a perspective on how to make full use of the advantages of the CPC-enhanced luminescence to construct novel, efficient, eco-friendly, and low-cost optical devices such as optical sensors, lasers, and displays.

Abstract:The ability to selectively redirect specific wavelengths of light has attracted a lot attention for photonic crystal materials. Presently, there is a wealth of research relating to the fabrication and application of photonic crystal materials. There a number of structures which fallinto the category of a photonic crystal; 1D, 2D and 3D ordered structures can qualify as a photonic crystal, provided there exists ordered repeating lattices of dielectric material with a sufficient refractive index contrast. The optical responses of these structures, namely the associated photonic bandgap or stopband, are of particular interest for any application involving light. The sensitivity of the photonic bandgap to changes in lattice size or refractive index composition creates the possibility foraccurate optical sensors. Optical phenomena involving reduced group velocity at wavelengths on the edge of the photonic bandgap are commonly exploited for photocatalytic applications. The inherent reflectivity of the photonic bandgap has created applications in optical waveguides or as solar cell reflector layers. There are countless examples of research attempting to exploit these facets of photonic crystal behaviorfor improved material design. Here, the role of photonic crystals is reviewed across a wide a variety of disciplines; cataloguing the ways in which these structures have enhanced specific applications. Abstract:Photonic crystals have many potential applications due to their unique abilities to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves. If their bandgap and dispersive properties are modulated by external means, more exciting applications emerge. In this work, we present novel applications and devices created by tuning the bandgap and dispersive properties of periodic photonic crystal structures. We present our designs in both high- and low-refractive index materials. Many tunability alternatives exist including thermal, optical, electrical, microfluidic, and liquid crystals-based. In this paper, we will utilize these methods to implement various photonic crystal-based devices and applications.

Abstract:Anomalous optical transmission phenomena have ever been discovered in various metamaterials, which can be modulated more easily in Photonic crystals (PhCs). Compared with the regular PhCs composed of round rods closely packed in air, the equal frequency contours (EFC) of honeycomb lattice PhCs constituted by trigonal rods are more rounded and more suitable to realize the all-angle left-handed negative refraction (AALNR) in the low band region. Due to the hex EFC distribution, the regular PhC can be applied in the optical collimator design. In the higher band regions, the more complicated refraction behaviors can be excited based on the intricate undulation of one band or the overlap of different bands in PhCs. These unique features will provide us with more understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation in PhCs and give important guideline for the design of new type optical devices.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are periodic structural materials that have an impact on the propagation properties of photons. Due to their excellent optical, electrical and magnetic properties, their advantages and potential for applications in the above areas are gradually emerging. Therefore, an increasing number of researchers have focused on photonic crystals. In this paper, the characteristics of biological photonic crystal structures, such as those found in butterfly wings, sea mouse bristles, peacock feathers, melon jellyfish epidermal cells, and weevil exoskeletons, are described. The preparation methods of photonic crystals are systematically summarized (including the template method, self-assembly technology, electron beam evaporation coating technology, chemical vapor deposition technology, femtosecond laser two-photon technology, spin coating technology, and a variety of technology mixing), and the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of the different methods are compared. Furthermore, the development of photonic crystals in the field of sensors, solar cells, filters, and infrared stealth is discussed, demonstrateing the great development potential of photonic crystals. It is concluded that the realization of photonic crystals with high precision, high sensitivity, angle independence, and large-area uniform preparation is a key problem requiring urgent solution. Moreover, photonic crystals have potential development prospects in the fields of equipment stealth, new concept weapons, production, an daily life.

Abstract:Recent advancements in photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) have opened up exciting new possibilities for the design of optoelectronic devices with improved performance. In this perspective article, we provide an overview of recent progress in photonic BICs based on metamaterials and photonic crystals, focusing on both the underlying physics and their practical applications. The first part of this article introduces two different interpretations of BICs, based on far-field interference of multipoles and near-field analysis of topological charges. We then discuss recent research on manipulating the far-field radiation properties of BICs through the engineering of topological charges. The second part of the article summarizes recent developments in the applications of BICs, including chiral light and vortex beam generation, nonlinear optical frequency conversion, sensors, and nanolasers. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the potential of photonic BICs to advance terahertz applications in areas such as generation and detection, modulation, sensing, and isolation. We believe that continued research in this area will lead to exciting new advancements in optoelectronics, particularly in the field of terahertz devices.

Abstract:The recent research of topological photonics has not only proposed and realized novel topological phenomena such as one-way broadband propagation and robust transport of light, but also designed and fabricated photonic devices with high-performance indexes which are immune to fabrication errors such as defects or disorders. Photonic crystals, which are periodic optical structures with the advantages of good light field confinement and multiple adjusting degrees of freedom, provide a powerful platform to control the flow of light. With the topology defined in the reciprocal space, photonic crystals have been widely used to reveal different topological phases of light and demonstrate topological photonic functionalities. In this review, we present the physics of topological photonic crystals with different dimensions, models and topological phases. The design methods of topological photonic crystals are introduced. Furthermore, we review the applications of topological photonic crystals in passive and active photonics. These researches pave the way of applying topological photonic crystals in practical photonic devices.
