Abstract:Photonic crystals and nanofibers,two kinds of important photonic materials,possess the unique feature of being able to control the propagation of photons.They are thus an important platform for the study of the interaction of photons and matter on the mesoscopic scale,as well as an important basis for the realization of novel micro/nano-scale photonic devices.Progress in the research on ultrafast low-power photonic crystal all-optical switching,nanofiber sensors,interferometers,and hybrid dielectric-metallic nanowire components will be reviewed.

Abstract:A filling-factor-graded wavelike two-dimensional photonic crystal (2DPC) possessing a light-path bending effect that is polarization dependent is theoretically studied by using a qualitative analysis of the isofrequency curves. The numerical simulation results obtained by using the finite-difference time-domain method demonstrate that such a graded 2DPC has potential applications in a polarization splitter and a parallel-plane resonant cavity. A new kind of waveguide structure that combines a filling-factor-graded wavelike 2DPC and one-dimensional multilayer thin films is also discussed.

Abstract:Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with $C_{6v}$ symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By introducing disorders to the waveguide, these states are proven to be robust with well suppressed backscattering.

Abstract:Abstract Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have brought tremendous advancements due to their predominant feature of a peculiar air-hole arrangement in the 2D direction. Functional materials like metals, magnetic fluids, nematic liquid crystals, graphene and so on, are being extensively adopted for integration with PCFs to obtain extraordinary transmission properties. This review takes the development stages of photonic devices based on functional material-infiltrated PCFs into consideration, covering the overview of common materials and their photoelectric characteristics, state-of-art infiltrating/coating techniques, and the corresponding applications involving polarization filtering and splitting devices in optical communication and sensing elements related to multiple-parameter measurement. The cladding airhole of PCFs provides a natural optofluidic channel for materials to be introduced, light–matter interaction to beenhanced, and transmission properties to be extended, in this case, a lab on a fiber are able to be implemented. This paves the way for the development of photonic devices in the aspects of compact, multi-functional integration as well as electromagnetic resistance. When the PCFs are integrated with the phemomenon of surface plasmon resonance, the property of tunable refractive indices, and the flexible geometry structures, it comes up to some representative researches on polarization filters, multiplexer-demultiplexers, splitters, couplers and sensors. It makes a candidate for widespread fields of telecommunication, signal-capacity, and high-performance sensing.
Photonic Crystal Waveguides and Their Applications

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) slab photonic crystal waveguides (PCWGs) on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer were designed and fabricated. Full photonic band gap, band gap guided mode, and index guided mode were observed by measuring the transmission spectra. Mini-stop-bands in the PCWG were simulated with different structure paramaters. Coupling characteristics of PCWG were investigated theoretically considering the imperfections during the fabrication process. It was found that suppressing power reservation effect can realize both short coupling length and high coupling efficiency.

Abstract:The photnic crystal devices(PhCD)can manipulate the behavior of photons with the advantages such as lower energy loss,smaller size and more easy to integrate on a chip. In this paper some capital design methods and theories of PhCDs were summarized,then the technological difficult points in the fabrication were pointed out and two important coupling technologies were introduced. We also give a perspective about the PhCDs in the end.
Modeling and Characterization of Tunable Photonic Crystal Waveguides Based on Two-Dimensional Periodic Arrays of Silicon Pillars

Abstract:Highly dense two-dimensional periodic arrays of nano-scaled silicon pillars present the capacity for acting as photonic crystals which can mould, manipulate and guide light. We demonstrate finite element modelling of silicon pillars based photonic crystals and their effective use in applications like waveguides, multiplexers and switches. The optical wave propagation through these structures was thoroughly simulated and analysed, confirming their high efficiency.Later the fabrication of highly periodic two-dimensional arrays of silicon pillars through the process of etching is also explained. High quality of fabricated silicon pillars is displayed in various scanning electron microscope images. The arrays with pillar radius of 50 nm and lattice constant of 400 nm were successfully utilised as optical waveguides with sharp turns. The experimental results are presented showing a good match with the simulation band gap results. Finally we also present the concept of utilising liquid crystals as an anisotropic medium around the silicon nano-pillars to establish tuneable photonic crystals waveguides. The cell geometry for such a hybrid device is suggested in which by application of voltage the dielectric constant of liquid crystals can be controlled and essentially the waveguides can be tuned.
On‐Chip Tightly Confined Guiding and Splitting of Surface Acoustic Waves Using Line Defects in Phononic Crystals

Abstract:Phononic crystals (PnCs) exhibit acoustic properties that are not usually found in natural materials, which leads to the possibility of new devices for the complex manipulation of acoustic waves. In this article, a micron-scale phononic waveguide constructed by line defects in PnCs to achieve on-chip, tightly confined guiding, bending, and splitting of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) is reported. The PnC is made of a square lattice of periodic nickel pillars on a piezoelectric substrate. The PnC lattice constant, pillar diameter, and pillar height are set to 10, 7.5, and 3.2 mu m, respectively, leading to a complete bandgap centered at 195 MHz. Interdigitated transducers are monolithically integrated on the same substrate for SAW excitation. The guiding, bending, and splitting of SAWs in the phononic waveguide are experimentally observed through measurement of the out-of-plane displacement fields using a scanning optical interferometer. The combination of destructive interference due to the Bragg bandgap and the interaction of the propagating wave with the pillars around the channel results in a tight confinement of the displacement field. The proposed phononic waveguides demonstrate the feasibility of precise local manipulation of SAW that is essential for emerging frontier applications, notably for phonon-based classical and quantum information processing.
Study of the Photonic Crystal Waveguide Based on 2D Compound Lattice Structure

Abstract:By employing 2D plane wave expansion (PWE) and finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods, a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) based on the compound square lattice structure is presented. Band-gap can be observed for TM polarization and compared with the simple lattice structure based on the same material, the band-gap is increased by 62.7%. By optimizing the parameters we get the PCW with the propagation only near the wavelength of 1.55 µm and a flat group index curve in a wide wavelength range of 40 nm. And the group velocity dispersion compensation can be realized by the structure optimization. The results provide a reference for the study and application of photonic crystal waveguide based on the compound lattice structure.
Engineering Dispersion Properties of Photonic Crystals for Spatial Beam Routing and Non-Channel Waveguiding

Abstract:In this research we present various implementations of novel photonic devices using photonic crystals, by engineering the dispersive properties of these periodic structures in a region outside the bandgap. Applications such as spatial beam routing can be attained through careful optimization of various Equi-Frequency Contours. The remarkable difference for the non-conventional-circular-shaped EFC in PhCs opens up a new dimension for the dispersion engineering of wide planar devices and applications based on the shape of the EFC obtained. Circular, square, star, or hexagonal are various possible shapes of EFC that can be achieved and/or engineered. For certain applications specific EFC shapes can be optimal while others are not. In addition to non-channel waveguiding through the periodic structure with sharp bends. We further present reverse engineering of the periodic structures dispersive properties to design various lattice arrangements. Numerical analyses were performed using both plane-wave expansion method as well as the FDTD method.

Abstract:The research field of photonic crystals (PhCs) remains active on a global scale. PhCs, which are periodic optical nanostructures with the characteristics of excellent light field confinement and numerous varying degrees of freedom, provide a solid foundation for controlling the movement of light. Periodic variation of the index of refraction in two or three spatial dimensions with a substantial high-to-low ratio generates a number of intriguing phenomena and enables a variety of potential functionalities. Recently, intriguing devices based on PhCs, such as Y-branches, small-diameter bent waveguides, and miniature resonator cavities, have been proposed and extensively utilized. PhC waveguides are considered ideal candidates for a variety of applications, such as in power splitters, logic gates, sensing and communication fields, etc. These exceptional characteristics may facilitate the development of a dense integrated circuit. However, PhC technology is still relatively new and therefore requires additional effort to fully exploit it. This paper reviews the most popular and essential optical components based on PhCs, including power splitters, modulators, polarization maintaining devices, sensors, and lasers, to summarize the most recent developments relating this hot topic. These devices have superior performance and a smaller footprint compared to conventional photonic devices.

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs) are periodic dielectric structures that severed as an excellent platform to manipulate light. A conventional way to guide/trap light via PCs is to introduce a line or point defect by removing or modifying several unit cells. Here we show that the light can be effectively guided and trapped in the glided photonic crystal interfaces (GPCIs). The projected band gap of GPCIs, which depends on the glide parameter, is characterized by a Dirac mass. Interestingly, the GPCIs with zero Dirac mass is a glide-symmetric waveguide featured with excellent transmission performance even in the presence of sharp corners and disorders. Moreover, placing two GPCIs with opposite Dirac mass together results in a photonic bound state due to the Jackiw-Rebbi theory. Our work provides an alternative way towards the design of ultracompact photonic devices such as GPCIs-induced coupled cavity-waveguide system and waveguide splitter.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are a new type of synthetic microstructure materials which have periodical refraction index variations in the space and produce photonic band gaps similar to electronic band gaps produced by the crystal potentials of semiconductors. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to the studies of photonic crystals due to their unique abilities to manipulate and control photon behaviors. It presents a brief introduction to the photonic crystal and structure characteristics. Some major fabrication methods are demonstrated and various applications of photonic crystals, such as photonic crystal fiber, photonic crystal waveguide, photonic crystal laser, are also discussed.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) has offered a powerful means to mold the flow of light and manipulate light-matter interaction at subwavelength scale. Silicon has a large refraction index and low loss in infrared wavelengths, which makes it an important optical material. And silicon has been widely used for integrated photonics applications. In this paper, we have reviewed some recent theoretical and experimental works in our group on infrared two-dimensional (2D) air-bridged silicon PhC slab devices that are based on both band gap and band structure engineering. We have designed, fabricated, and characterized a series of PhC waveguides with novel geometries, PhC high-quality (high-Q) cavity, and channel drop filters utilizing resonant coupling between waveguide and cavity. These devices are aimed to construct a more flexible network of transport channel for infrared light at micrometer/nanometer scale. We have also explored the remarkable dispersion properties of PhCs by engineering the band structures to achieve negative refraction, self-collimation, superprism, and other anomalous dispersion behaviors of infrared light beam. Furthermore, we have designed and fabricated a PhC structure with negative refraction effect and used scanning near-field optical microscopy to observe the negative refraction beam. Finally, we have designed and realized a PhC structure that exhibits a self-collimation effect in a wide angle range and with a large bandwidth. Our works presented in this review show that PhCs have a strong power of controlling propagation of light at micrometer/nanometer scale and possess a great potential of applications in integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:Photonic crystals have many potential applications due to their unique abilities to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves. If their bandgap and dispersive properties are modulated by external means, more exciting applications emerge. In this work, we present novel applications and devices created by tuning the bandgap and dispersive properties of periodic photonic crystal structures. We present our designs in both high- and low-refractive index materials. Many tunability alternatives exist including thermal, optical, electrical, microfluidic, and liquid crystals-based. In this paper, we will utilize these methods to implement various photonic crystal-based devices and applications.

Abstract:Photonic crystal is a structure with periodic dielectric constant and it has photonic band gap, in which the electromagnetic wave can not propagate in the structure. Two-dimensional slab photonic crystals can be fabricated by etching periodic air holes on a slab substrate, which has been investigated and applied extensively because of their good control of light propagation. Photonic crystal micro-cavities and waveguides can be achieved by introducing defects in the two-dimensional slab photonic crystal. The coupling of micro-cavities and waveguides can be controlled by adjusting geometric parameters, so as to realize the optical devices based on two-dimensional slab photonic crystals such as optical switching, optical storage and single photon source, etc. Prop erties of the micro-cavities and waveguides of two-dimensional slab photonic crystals are introduced, and their coupling control and potential applications in optical quantum information processing are discussed as well.

Abstract:Fabrication of photonic crystal-based ceramic materials is an important developing application.In this paper,recent re-searches about the fabrication and the application of ceramic photonic crystals in the frequency range from microwave to visible light of ceramic-based photonic crystals are reviewed.We focus on the tunable band-gap and spontaneous emission of ceramic photonic crystals caused by the various electric/optical properties of functional ceramics.Because ceramic photonic crystals have many advan-tages such as a high refractive index and extensive functions,and they can be fabricated by many different methods,they have great potential for a variety of applications;they can be used as optical switches based on the electro-optic effect and optical nonlinearity for communication application and as directional emissive light sources based on anisotropic light emission for display applications.
