Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:In recent years, photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have attracted increasing attention. Compared with traditional optical fibers, PCFs exhibit many unique optical properties and superior performance due to their high degree of structural design freedom. Using large-mode area (LMA) fibers with single-mode operation is essential to overcoming emerging problems as the power of fiber lasers scales up, which can effectively reduce the power density and mitigate the influence of nonlinear effects. With a brief introduction of the concept, classification, light transmission mechanism, basic properties, and theoretical analysis methods of PCFs, this paper mainly compiles the worldwide development of large-mode area and polarization-maintaining (PM) PCFs, and finally proposes possible technical routes to realize the single-mode operation of LMA-PCFs and PM-LMA-PCFs. Finally, the future development prospects of the PCFs are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract A numerical analysis of a hexagonal PCF structure with four circular air hole rings around the core has been presented in this paper. By utilizing a full vectorial finite element method with perfectly matched layers, propagation properties such as birefringence, chromatic dispersion and confinement losses are numericaly evaluated for the proposed PCF structure. Specifically, birefringence of 2.018 × 10 –2 , nonlinear coefficients of 40.682 W −1 km −1 , negative chromatic dispersion of − 47.72 ps/km.nm at 1.55 μm and − 21 to − 105 ps/km.nm at the telecommunication band of C-U have been reported.

Abstract:Abstract Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have brought tremendous advancements due to their predominant feature of a peculiar air-hole arrangement in the 2D direction. Functional materials like metals, magnetic fluids, nematic liquid crystals, graphene and so on, are being extensively adopted for integration with PCFs to obtain extraordinary transmission properties. This review takes the development stages of photonic devices based on functional material-infiltrated PCFs into consideration, covering the overview of common materials and their photoelectric characteristics, state-of-art infiltrating/coating techniques, and the corresponding applications involving polarization filtering and splitting devices in optical communication and sensing elements related to multiple-parameter measurement. The cladding airhole of PCFs provides a natural optofluidic channel for materials to be introduced, light–matter interaction to beenhanced, and transmission properties to be extended, in this case, a lab on a fiber are able to be implemented. This paves the way for the development of photonic devices in the aspects of compact, multi-functional integration as well as electromagnetic resistance. When the PCFs are integrated with the phemomenon of surface plasmon resonance, the property of tunable refractive indices, and the flexible geometry structures, it comes up to some representative researches on polarization filters, multiplexer-demultiplexers, splitters, couplers and sensors. It makes a candidate for widespread fields of telecommunication, signal-capacity, and high-performance sensing.

Abstract:This article offers an extensive survey of results obtained using hybrid photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) which constitute one of the most active research fields in contemporary fiber optics. The ability to integrate novel and functional materials in solid- and hollow-core PCFs through various post-processing methods has enabled new directions towards understanding fundamental linear and nonlinear phenomena as well as novel application aspects, within the fields of optoelectronics, material and laser science, remote sensing and spectroscopy. Here the recent progress in the field of hybrid PCFs is reviewed from scientific and technological perspectives, focusing on how different fluids, solids and gases can significantly extend the functionality of PCFs. In the first part of this review we discuss the most important efforts by research groups around the globe to develop tunable linear and nonlinear fiber-optic devices using PCFs infiltrated with various liquids, glasses, semiconductors and metals. The second part is concentrated on the most recent and state-of-the-art advances in the field of gas-filled hollow-core PCFs. Extreme ultrafast gas-based nonlinear optics towards light generation in the extreme wavelength regions of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), pulse propagation and compression dynamics in both atomic and molecular gases, and novel soliton - plasma interactions are reviewed. A discussion of future prospects and directions is also included.

Design of Photonic Crystal Fibers with Anomalous Dispersion

Abstract:Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with anomalous dispersion in short wavelength region are significant for some applications, such as short wavelength soliton propagation, super continuum generation and short pulse fiber lasing. In this paper, a systematic method for designing PCFs with required anomalous dispersion region is proposed by using a finite difference solver and the scaling transformation of the waveguide dispersion of PCFs. Designed PCF can be anomalously dispersive in the region less than 1.3 μm, which is very difficult to realize in the traditional standard single-mode fibers. The effectiveness of the proposed method is approved by numerical results.

Abstract:Over the past few years, much work has been devoted to the study of microcavities in photonic crystals (PCs). High-quality factor (Q) PC microcavities exhibit attractive properties since they can confine light in wavelength-scale dimensions, making them potentially useful not only for photonic integration but also in quantum optics. Most of the high-Q PC microcavities are realized in slabs (PCSs), which are two-dimensional (2D) PCs with a high refractive index core layer providing light confinement in the third dimension. The key to design high-Q cavities is to reduce the radiation losses, i.e., to minimize the spatial Fourier components above the light line of the PCS. This chapter will focus on high-Q PC microcavity, including design rules, characterization methods, device demonstrations, and applications.

Abstract:2D graphene with tremendous novel properties is an ideal material for optical and optoelectronic applications. Meanwhile, photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have been recognized as next-generation optical fibers that possess a designable porous structure, rich functions, and different working mechanisms. Recently, the integration of graphene with a PCF has formed a new hybrid fiber, a graphene photonic crystal fiber (Gr-PCF), which exhibits an extremely strong and tunable light-matter interaction across a broadband spectrum range and opens up a new interdisciplinary research direction. In this review, recent studies on, and achievements in graphene-traditional fibers and Gr-PCFs have been summarized from the aspects of the development process, preparation method, and device application. First, the graphene properties and the development and characteristics of PCFs are introduced. The discussion is continued with the existing fabrication technologies for hybrid graphene-traditional fibers. Next, the chemical vapor deposition method for Gr-PCFs is elaborated. Then, fiber devices based on graphene-traditional fibers, Gr-PCFs, and other 2D material fibers are presented. To conclude, challenges and perspectives are presented to encourage advanced Gr-PCF study.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are a new type of synthetic microstructure materials which have periodical refraction index variations in the space and produce photonic band gaps similar to electronic band gaps produced by the crystal potentials of semiconductors. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to the studies of photonic crystals due to their unique abilities to manipulate and control photon behaviors. It presents a brief introduction to the photonic crystal and structure characteristics. Some major fabrication methods are demonstrated and various applications of photonic crystals, such as photonic crystal fiber, photonic crystal waveguide, photonic crystal laser, are also discussed.

Abstract:A new type of highly birefringent polyethylene rectangular lattice photonic crystal fiber (RLPCF) was investigated. This PCF can operate at single-polarization single-mode (SPSM). By changing the structure parameters of the RLPCF, the mode index of the two linearly polarized principal states can be designed. Results show that the PCF has higher birefringence than regular RLPCF. Furthermore, the polyethylene material that is transparent to terahertz wave is inexpensive and easy to operate. This PCF is an effective component for some THz systems.
Optofluidics in Photonic Crystal Fibers

Abstract:The micro-hole channels inside Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) open up new opportunities for integrated microfluidics. Compared to their planar counterparts, PCF devices offer a number of advantages such as long lengths, 2D waveguide design flexibility, relative ease of fabrication, and robustness. In this talk, we will begin by reviewing the progress of optofluidics in PCFs. Specifically we will show how microfluidics can enhance the functionalities of PCFs, for example, by making them highly tunable, reconfigurable and adaptive. We will then discuss how these PCFs and PCF-based devices can be exploited for advanced microfluidic applications such as spectroscopy, bio-sensing, medicine, as well as environmental monitoring and novel lasers. Following this, we will introduce our recent progress in all-in-fiber PCF optofluidic microcells. We have developed a new technique to seamlessly integrate the PCFs with standard fibers, with advantages such as compactness, isolation from the environment (i.e., eliminating evaporation), high efficiency, as well as easy launching and detection of light. Furthermore, by using a pulsed CO2 laser to seal the cladding holes of the PCF extremities we can isolate the core with minimal structural deformation along the length (deformation region is limited to ~10 µm), so that the guiding properties are not disturbed. Using different PCF designs, we will demonstrate strong cascaded stimulated Raman scattering in fluids with indices both higher (toluene) and lower (ethanol) than silica, possible due to the 2D structure. We will also discuss the use of this all-in-fiber platform to detect the aqueous solutions of biomolecules with high sensitivity.

Abstract:Photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has shown a promising application in various fields of modern optics due to its excellent transmission characteristics. However, conventional numerical solution methods have limitations such as high computational effort and low efficiency in designing PCF structures and characterizing pulse propagation in PCFs. With the advancement of artificial intelligence technology, various types of intelligent computing approaches, especially intelligent algorithm and machine learning algorithm (IML), provide new perspectives to solve the above difficulties. Therefore, an increasing number of researchers are committed to using IML to break through the limitations of conventional methods and accordingly open up a new interdisciplinary research direction. This paper begins with a brief overview of common optical properties and typical algorithms. Subsequently, it reviews specific areas where PCF and IML are combined, including the prediction and optimization of optical properties, the design of polarization devices, fiber lasers and amplifiers, as well as the control and prediction of Supercontinuum generation. Finally, this paper offers insights into the future developments and challenges in this emerging interdisciplinary field.

Optical Fibers Embedded with As-Grown Carbon Nanotubes for Ultrahigh Nonlinear Optical Responses

Abstract:Photonic crystal fiber (PCF) embedded with functional materials has demonstrated diverse applications ranging from ultrafast lasers, optical communication to chemical sensors. Many efforts have been made to fabricating carbon nanotube (CNT) based optical fibers by ex situ transfer method; however, often suffer poor uniformity and coverage. Here, the direct growth of CNTs on the inner walls of PCFs by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is reported. A two-step growth method is developed to control the narrow diameter distribution of CNTs to ensure desirable nanotube optical transitions. In the as-fabricated CNT- embedded fiber, third-harmonic generation (THG) has been enhanced by & AP;15 times compared with flat CNT film on fused silica. A dual-wavelength all-fiber mode-locked ultrafast laser (& AP;1561 and & AP;1064 nm) is further demonstrated by integrating the 1.36 & PLUSMN;0.15 nm-diameter CNTs into two kinds of photonic bandgap hollow core PCF (named HC-1550 and HC-1060) as saturable absorbers, using their S-11 (& AP;0.7 eV) and S-22 (& AP;1.2 eV) interband transition respectively. The fiber laser shows stable output of & AP;10 mW, & AP;800 fs pulse width, and & AP;71 MHz repetition rate at 1561 nm wavelength. These results can enable the large-scale applications of CNTs in PCF-based optical devices.

Abstract:Abstract-Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have attracted a lot of interest because of their special optical characteristics and possible uses in a number of industries, including sensing, medical imaging, and telecommunications. Here, we report on a thorough examination of a newly developed PCF structure with a rectangular core that was simulated with the aid of the COMSOL Multiphysics software. In comparison to conventional circular core fibers, the suggested PCF design has a rectangular core geometry, which offers advantages in terms of greater flexibility in adjusting light propagation properties. We examine the modal properties like Birefringence, Effective Area and confinement losses of the rectangular-core PCF over a broad wavelength range using comprehensive numerical simulations performed with COMSOL. Regarding the viability and efficiency of the rectangular-core PCF architecture, our results show encouraging trends. Its potential usefulness for applications requiring customized optical features is suggested by the strong modal confinement and low dispersion properties we see within the relevant spectral range. All things considered, this work opens the door for the creation of sophisticated optical fibers with improved performance and adaptability by offering insightful information on the design and optimization of photonic crystal fibers with rectangular cores using COMSOL.

Abstract:A new nonlinear dispersion flattened photonic crystal fiber with low confinement loss is proposed. This fiber has threefold symmetry core. The doped region in the core and the big air-holes in the 1st ring can make high nonlinearity in the PCF. And the small air-holes in the 1st ring and the radial increasing diameters air-holes rings in cladding can be used to achieve the dispersion properties of the PCF. We can achieve the optimized optical properties by carefully selecting the PCFs structure parameters. A PCF with flattened dispersion is obtained. The dispersion is less than 0.8ps/(nmkm) and is larger than −0.7ps/(nmkm) from 1.515μm to 1.622μm. The nonlinear coefficient is about 12.6456W−1km−1, the fundamental mode area is about 10.2579μm2. The confinement loss is 0.30641dB/km. This work may be useful for effective design and fabrication of dispersion flattened photonic crystal fibers with high nonlinearities.

Abstract:The photnic crystal devices(PhCD)can manipulate the behavior of photons with the advantages such as lower energy loss,smaller size and more easy to integrate on a chip. In this paper some capital design methods and theories of PhCDs were summarized,then the technological difficult points in the fabrication were pointed out and two important coupling technologies were introduced. We also give a perspective about the PhCDs in the end.

Abstract:We propose two kinds of hybrid photonic crystal fiber (PCF) structures and investigate the properties of such PCFs in detail. The modal effective index, mode field area, confinement loss, group velocity dispersion, and birefringence are numerically simulated and compared with those of the corresponding index-guiding and bandgap PCFs, which allows for a deeper understanding of the guiding mechanism of the hybrid PCFs. The advantages of hybrid PCFs and potential applications are also discussed.

Abstract:A) novel photonic crystal fiber structure with high nonlinearity and flattened dispersion is proposed and analyzed.A parameter δ is introduced to measure the nonlinearity and dispersion flattening.The effect of hole size on nonlinearity and dispersion of the photonic crystal fiber(PCF) is analyzed by the plane wave expansion method.The new structure introduces six additional smaller holes between the holes of the first ring to reduce the effective area,and increase the nonlinearity of the fiber.By optimizing the diameters of the first,third,and the additional rings of holes,a PCF with high nonlinearity and flattened dispersion is achieved.The dispersion parameter is within(±0.5 ps/(km·nm)) in a 330 nm wavelength range,within ±0.1 ps/(km·nm) in a 230 nm wavelength range,and within(±0.05 ps/(km·nm)) in a 200 nm wavelength range.The effective area is 2.26 μm~2.The nonlinearity-dispersion flattening parameter δ=11.8 ps·W/μm~2.
