Abstract:K-ion battery (KIB) is a new-type energy storage device that possesses potential advantages of low-cost and abundant resource of potassium. To develop advanced electrode materials for accommodating the large size and high activity of potassium ion is of great interests. Herein, a segment-like antimony (Sb) nanorod encapsulated in hollow carbon tube electrode material (Sb@HCT) was prepared. Beneficial from the virtue of abundant nitrogen doping in carbon tube, one-dimensional and hollow structure advantages, Sb@HCT exhibits excellent potassium storage properties: in the case of potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) electrolyte, Sb@HCT displays a reversible capacity of up to 453.4 mAh·g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A·g−1 and good rate performance (a capacity of 211.5 mAh·g−1 could be achieved at an ultrahigh rate of 5 A·g−1). Additionally, Sb@HCT demonstrates excellent long-cycle stability at a current density of 2 A·g−1 over 120 cycles. Meanwhile, electrolyte optimization is an effective strategy for greatly improving electrochemical performance. Through ex-situ characterizations, we disclosed the potassiation of Sb anode is quite reversible and undergoes multistep processes, combining solid solution reaction and two-phase reaction.

A Superconcentrated Water‐in‐Salt Hydrogel Electrolyte for High‐Voltage Aqueous Potassium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:We report a high‐voltage aqueous full K‐ion battery (AFKIB) using a 50 m K‐ion water‐in‐salt hydrogel electrolyte (WISHE). This WISHE exhibits an expanded electrochemical stability window (ESW) of 3.0 V as well as a high ionic conductivity of 4.34 mS cm ‐1 . The hydrogen bonds between the polymer network and the water phase help to further widen the ESW over a liquid type water‐in‐salt electrolyte, and prevent liquid leakage. The assembled AFKIB exhibits a considerable capacity of 135 mAh g ‐1 and a superior stability after 3000 cycles. This work provides a meaningful way in designing high‐voltage aqueous energy storage devices.

Abstract:Aqueous potassium-ion batteries (AKIBs) are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage. However, the performance of AKIBs is restricted the dissolution of electrode materials and the narrow voltage window of aqueous electrolytes. Herein, we report the amphiphilic supramolecule modified aqueous K-ion electrolytes with synergistic functions of excluded-volume effect and hydrogen bond networks, which greatly reduce the activity of water molecules, inhibit the dissolution of active materials, and expand the operation voltage window (>3.4 V). Moreover, the as-assembled full-cell AKIBs exhibit an open-circuit voltage of 2.0 V, good rate capability, wide operating temperature range (-20 to 90 degrees C), and ultralong cycling life (with a capacity retention of 97.8 % after 10,000 cycles at 10 C). The study makes it possible for aqueous electrolytes to possess wide voltage window and temperature endurance, greatly expanding the choices of practicable electrolyte and paving the way of high -voltage aqueous batteries towards sustainable, safety and low-cost energy storage.
Zn-ion ultrafluidity via bioinspired ion channel for ultralong lifespan Zn-ion battery

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries have been deemed a promising energy storage device. However, the dendrite growth and side reactions have hindered their practical application. Herein, inspired by the ultrafluidic and K+ ion-sieving flux through enzyme-gated potassium channels (KcsA) in biological plasma membranes, a metal-organic-framework (MOF-5) grafted with -ClO4 groups (MOF-ClO4) as functional enzymes is fabricated to mimic the ultrafluidic lipid-bilayer structure for gating Zn2+ 'on' and anions 'off' states. The MOF-ClO4 achieved perfect Zn2+/SO4 2- selectivity (∼10), enhanced Zn2+ transfer number ([Formula: see text]) and the ultrafluidic Zn2+ flux (1.9 × 10-3 vs. 1.67 mmol m-2 s-1 for KcsA). The symmetric cells based on MOF-ClO4 achieve a lifespan of over 5400 h at 10 mA cm-2/20 mAh cm-2. Specifically, the performance of the PMCl-Zn//V2O5 pouch cell keeps 81% capacity after 2000 cycles at 1 A g-1. The regulated ion transport, by learning from a biological plasma membrane, opens a new avenue towards ultralong lifespan aqueous batteries.

Abstract:A Zn–K hybrid ion battery design is developed using a nonflammable Zn–K hybrid ion electrolyte, which divides the electrochemical process into two parts of K+ insertion/extraction at cathode and Zn2+ plating/stripping at anode and avoids the structure destruction caused by the Zn2+ insertion in the cathode. An ultra‐long cycle life of 15 000 cycles is realized with 65.2% capacity retention. Zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) are viewed as a promising energy storage system for large‐scale applications thanks to the low cost and wide accessibility of Zn‐based materials, the high theoretical capacity of Zn anode, and their high level of safety. However, the practical application of ZIBs is hindered by the rapid performance degradation. Herein, a Zn–K hybrid ion battery design is proposed using a high‐quality Prussian blue cathode and a nonflammable Zn–K hybrid ion electrolyte. The electrochemical process is divided into two parts, with K+ insertion/extraction occurring at the cathode side and Zn2+ plating/stripping occurring at the anode side, which avoids structure destruction caused by Zn2+ insertion in the cathode. The non‐flammable electrolyte not only ensures high safety but also effectively suppresses dendrite growth on the Zn anode. The hybrid cells demonstrate a high capacity of 151.0 mAh g−1, a high voltage of 1.74 V (vs Zn2+/Zn), and an ultra‐long cycle life of 15 000 cycles. Combining the nonflammable nature of the electrolyte, the abundance of raw materials, and good electrochemical performance, the Zn–K hybrid ion battery system promises a promising future for renewable energy storage applications.

Abstract:A potassium iron (II) hexacyanoferrate nanocube cathode material is reported, which operates with an aqueous electrolyte to deliver exceptionally high capacities (up to 120 mA h g-1 ). The cathode material exhibits excellent structural integrity, leading to fast kinetics and highly reversible properties. All of the battery materials are safe, inexpensive, and provide superior high-rate, long-cycle-life electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage because of their low cost and high safety. However, their practical applications are impeded by low energy density and short service life. Here, an aqueous Zn2+/Li+ hybrid-ion battery is fabricated using the LiV3O8 nanorods as the cathode, metallic Zn as the anode, and 3 M Zn(OTf)2 + 0.5 M LiOTf aqueous solution as the electrolyte. Compared with the batteries using pure 3 M Zn(OTf)2 electrolyte, the cycle performance of the hybrid-ion battery is significantly improved. After 4000 cycles at 5 A g1, the remaining capacity is 163.9 mA h g−1 with impressive capacity retention of 87.0%. Ex-situ XRD, ex-situ XPS, and SEM tests demonstrate that the hybrid electrolyte can inhibit the formation of the irreversible Zn3(OH)2V2O7·2H2O by-product and restrict Zn dendrite growth during cycling, thereby improving the cycle performance of the batteries.

Abstract:Based on low cost and earth abundance potassium resources, potassium-ion batteries have been regarded as the potential candidate for large-scale energy storage applications for renewable energy and smart grid. Although some earlier works have proposed reversible insertion/extraction of K+ ions in K cells, their cycle instability is insufficient for the further application of potassium-ion batteries. Herein, we report a symmetric potassium-ion battery with ultralong life employing a bipolar Cr/Ti based layered oxide, which contains two electrochemically active transition metals with the redox couples of Cr4+/Cr3+ and Ti4+/Ti3+ working on the cathode and anode side, respectively. Moreover, the (de)intercalation process in the structure and the in-situ electrochemical exchange process are investigated by ex-situ XRD. As a result, the symmetric cell based on the obtained K-based bipolar layered material exhibits a reversible capacity of 102 mA·h/g between 0.5 V and 3.5 V at 20 mA/g, an ultralong cycle life of 2000 cycles with a capacity retention of 80% and high rate capabilities. The outstanding cycling stability and rate performance endow this work with promising advantages for the future development of the novel energy storage system.

Long lifespan organic K-ion batteries with working voltage above 2 V in ether electrolytes

Abstract:Herein, the first example of high-voltage all-organic K-ion batteries is reported worldwide, which features poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK, ∼138 mA h g−1) as the high-potential polymer cathode and potassium terephthalate (K2TP, 221 mA h g−1) as the small-molecule anode. Excitedly, the resulting PVK-K2TP full cells can work in the voltage range of 2-4.1 V using 1 M potassium hexafluorophosphate (KPF6) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) and simultaneously deliver the max. discharge capacity of 67 mA h g−1cathode. Accordingly, the full cells can realize a high energy density of ∼214 W h kg−1cathode (3.2 V x 67 mA h g−1cathode) based on a high median working voltage of 3.2 V. Furthermore, the full cells can fulfill a long lifespan with the average discharge capacities of 46 mA h g−1cathode over 3000 cycles at 2 A g−1. To the best of our knowledge, this is currently one of the best results for K-ion full cells.

Abstract:K-ion batteries are promising alternatives to Li-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage, owing to the abundance of potassium resources and low cost of raw materials. The search and improvement for electrode materials are critical to obtain high safety and high efficiency potassium-ion full batteries. Here we synthesize a well-constructed KVPO4F with primary particles embedded in carbon framework. The as-obtained KVPO4F manifests a high capacity of 103 mAh g(-1) (at 20 mA g(-1)), stable cycle life to 900 cycles (at 1 A g(-1)) and excellent high-rate capacity of 87.6 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1). For the first time, we assemble K-ion full batteries based on KVPO4F/VPO4 with a high capacity of 101 mAh g(-1) (controlled by cathode), high operating voltage of 3.1 V, and a capacity retention of 86.8% over 2000 cycles.

Abstract:Potassium–sulfur (K–S) batteries have attracted wide attention owing to their high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, the intractable shuttle effect of K polysulfides results in poor cyclability of K–S batteries, which severely limits their practical application. Herein, a bifunctional concentrated electrolyte (3 mol L−1 potassium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide in ethylene carbonate (EC)) with high ionic conductivity and low viscosity is developed to regulate the dissolution behavior of polysulfides and induce uniform K deposition. The organic groups in the cathode electrolyte interphase layer derived from EC can effectively block the polysulfide shuttle and realize a "solid–liquid–solid" reaction mechanism. The KF-riched solid-electrolyte interphase inhibits K dendrite growth during cycling. As a result, the achieved K–S batteries display a high reversible capacity of 654 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 after 800 cycles and a long lifespan over 2000 cycles at 1 A g−1.

Abstract:Current rechargeable batteries generally display limited cycle life and slow electrode kinetics and contain environmentally unfriendly components. Furthermore, their operation depends on the redox reactions of metal elements. We present an original battery system that depends on the redox of I-/I-3(-) couple in liquid cathode and the reversible enolization in polyimide anode, accompanied by Li+ (or Na+) diffusion between cathode and anode through a Li+/Na+ exchange polymer membrane. There are no metal element-based redox reactions in this battery, and Li+ (or Na+) is only used for charge transfer. Moreover, the components (electrolyte/electrode) of this system are environment-friendly. Both electrodes are demonstrated to have very fast kinetics, which gives the battery a supercapacitor-like high power. It can even be cycled 50,000 times when operated within the electrochemical window of 0 to 1.6 V. Such a system might shed light on the design of high-safety and low-cost batteries for grid-scale energy storage.
A Dynamically Ion‐Sieved Electrolyte towards Ultralong‐Lifespan Zn‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:The practical deployment of Zn-ion batteries faces challenges such as dendrite growth, side reactions and cathode dissolution in traditional electrolytes. Here, we develop a highly conductive and dynamically ion-sieved electrolyte to simultaneously enhance the Zn metal reversibility and suppress the cathode dissolution. The dynamic ion screen at the electrode/electrolyte interface is achieved by numerous pyrane rings with a radius of 3.69 Å, which can selectively facilitate the plating/stripping and insertion/extraction process of [Zn(H2O)6]2+ and Zn2+ on the anode and cathode surfaces. As a proof of concept, Zn//Zn symmetric cells deliver exceptional cyclic stability for over 6,800 h and ultrahigh cumulative plated capacity of 3.9 Ah cm−2. Zn//Na2Mn3O7 cells exhibit satisfactory cycling performance with capacity retention of 82.7% after 4,000 cycles, and the assembled pouch cells achieve excellent stability and durability. This work provides valuable insights into the development of electrolytes aimed at enhancing the interface stability of aqueous batteries.

Abstract:In order to meet the ever-growing demand for energy and power densities in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, intensive research efforts are focusing on increasing output voltage and maintaining high capacity. However, the trade-off for higher voltage is sacrificing the service life of the batteries, since the detrimentally oxidative degradation on the high-potential cathode side would inevitably poison the whole cell. Thus, optimizing strategies for full-cells must take into account, cathode/anode-electrolyte compatibilities, electrochemical reversibility, and even thermal stability for practical applications, which spurs a hierarchical design for full-cell architecture. Benefitting from its superior oxidative stability, ionic liquid (Li/Pyr(13)TFSI) is employed as catholyte, and equimolar LiTFSI/G(3) complex is used as anolyte due to its high graphite-intercalation-chemistry reversibility. Segregated by a metal-organic-framework-based separator, advantages and drawbacks of each electrolyte systems can be synergistically tuned within their isolated environments. Encouragingly, assembled by this hybrid-electrolytes strategy, a LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (5 V-class)/graphite Li-ion full-cell holds an ultrahigh capacity retention rate of 83.8% over 1000 cycles at harsh elevated temperature.

Abstract:To tackle the persisting challenge of active materials dissolution, a high‐entropy methodology is harnessed in the formulation of a high‐entropy Prussian blue analog (HEPBA) for aqueous potassium‐ion batteries. The HEPBA exhibits exceptional resistance to dissolution in aqueous environments and demonstrates minimal volume fluctuation throughout charge–discharge cycles, leading to an extensive cycling lifespan and a prolonged calendar life. Aqueous potassium‐ion batteries (AKIBs) are considered promising electrochemical energy storage systems owing to their high safety and cost‐effectiveness. However, the structural degradation resulting from the repeated accommodation of large K‐ions and the dissolution of active electrode materials in highly dielectric aqueous electrolytes often lead to unsatisfactory electrochemical performance. This study introduces a high‐entropy Prussian blue analog (HEPBA) cathode material for AKIBs, demonstrating significantly enhanced structural stability and reduced dissolution. The HEPBA exhibits a highly reversible specific capacity of 102.4 mAh g−1, with 84.4% capacity retention after undergoing 3448 cycles over a duration of 270 days. Mechanistic insights derived from comprehensive experimental investigations, supported by theoretical calculations, reveal that the HEPBA features a robust structure resistant to dissolution, a solid‐solution reaction pathway with negligible volume variation during charge–discharge, and efficient ion transport kinetics characterized by a reduced band gap and a low energy barrier. This study represents a measurable step forward in the development of long‐lasting electrode materials for aqueous AKIBs.

Abstract:Due to its high theoretical energy density, good safety, and availability, as well as low cost, the rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion battery is considered one of the most promising systems for the next generation of energy storage devices. However, due to the strong electrostatic interaction between Zn2+ and host and the proton/Zn2+ cointercalation in aqueous media, the development of a zinc-ion battery with high capacity and a long lifetime remains an uphill task. In this work, a novel electrode–electrolyte design is employed by using a ZIF/Zn heterostructure as a microporous host matrix and an organic zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate as the constituent of the electrolyte. A zinc-ion battery based on the ZIF/Zn heterostructure anode delivers a specific capacity of 149 mAh g–1 and maintains a retention as high as 80% after 330 cycles at 1 A g–1. The synergistic effect of microstructural ZIF and hydrophobic trifluoromethanesulfonate anions creates a unique electrode–electrolyte interface, which suppresses the formation of dendrites and self-discharge of the Zn anode, resulting in the long cycling stability of the aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous nickel-ion batteries (NiIBs) featuring small ionic radius and high theoretical volumetric capacity hold great potential in novel aqueous battery systems. However, the further development of aqueous NiIBs is plagued, owing to the strong electrostatic repulsion between Ni2+ ions and the host electrode materials, leading to the limited capacity, poor cycling performance, and inferior rate capability. Herein, the novel K2V6O16·1.64H2O (KVO) nanobelts are synthesized and utilized as cathodes for aqueous NiIBs. The KVO cathode delivers a highly reversible specific capacity of ∼140.0 mA h g–1 after the initial activation process, and ∼70.8 mA h g–1 is achieved with the Coulombic efficiency close to 100% at 0.2 A g–1 after 1000 cycles. ∼40.5 mA h g–1 is still achieved at 1.0 A g–1 after 8000 cycles. Moreover, this battery possesses a remarkable rate capability with ∼137.4 mA h g–1 being regained when the current density is switched from 1.8 to 0.2 A g–1, which is ∼97% of that at 0.2 A g–1. The capacity, lifetime, and rate capability achieved all far exceed those of the reported aqueous NiIBs, arising from the layered structure and fast kinetics of the KVO cathode. This work paves the way toward the design of aqueous NiIBs with high electrochemical performances.

Abstract:The abundant reserve and low price of potassium resources promote K-ion batteries (KIBs) becoming a promising alternative to Li-ion batteries, while the large ionic radius of K-ions creates a formidable challenge for developing suitable electrodes. Here Ni-substituted Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are investigated comprehensively as cathodes for KIBs. The synthesized K1.90Ni0.5Fe0.5[Fe(CN)6]0.89·0.42H2O (KNFHCF-1/2) takes advantage of the merits of high capacity from electrochemically active Fe-ions, outstanding electrochemical kinetics induced by decreased band gap and K-ion diffusion activation energy, and admirable structure stability from inert Ni-ions. Therefore, a high first capacity of 81.6 mAh·g–1 at 10 mA·g–1, an excellent rate property (53.4 mAh·g–1 at 500 mA·g–1), and a long-term lifespan over 1000 cycles with the lowest fading rate of 0.0177% per cycle at 100 mA·g–1 can be achieved for KNFHCF-1/2. The K-ion intercalation/deintercalation proceeds through a facile solid solution mechanism, allowing 1.5-electron transfer based on low- and high-spins FeII/FeIII couples, which is verified by ex situ XRD, XPS, and DFT calculations. The K-ion full battery is also demonstrated using a graphite anode with a high energy density of 282.7 Wh·kg–1.
