Abstract:We have performed quantum-based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the initial chemical processes of the TATB under different temperatures. A self-consistent charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) method was employed.The results show that a large number of clusters (such as C12H12O8N10, C12H12O12N12, C12H12O6N9, C18H18O16N17) formed in the initial reaction process, which indicates that the initial heating mainly results in the binding of TATB adjacent molecules rather than their decomposition. Moreover, the stability sequence of bonds is C-C > N-H > C-NH2 > C-NO(2)in our research, C-NO(2)is the main reaction path at 1500 K, and C-NO(2)and C-NH(2)are the main reaction path at 2000 K. When temperature increase to 2500 K and 3000 K, the homolytic cleavage of the N-NO(2)and C-NH(2)bonds is suppressed, and the C-H bond dissociation becomes the primary pathway for TATB decomposition in its early stages.

Abstract:The heat effect of ammonia borane decomposition at 357 K under atmospheric pressure in glass and copper cells has been determined by calorimetry. The enthalpy of BH3NH3 heat-induced decomposition in glass ampoules is of–24.8±2.3 kJ/mol; this value includes the structural reorganization into diammoniate of diborane of–4.0±2.8 kJ/mol and the thermal effect of decomposition into polyamidoborane of–20.8±1.6 kJ/mol. In the case of experiments in copper cells a much higher (–47.6±8.3 kJ/mol) heat evolution is observed. The solidstate 15N and 11B NMR analysis of samples after the calorimetric experiment has shown that partial oxidation of the sample into boric acid occurs in copper cells.

Abstract:One equivalent of hydrogen gas is evolved from ammonia borane (NH3BH3) when it is heated above 70°C. The initial stages of this process have been examined using TG/DSC, optical microscopy, and high temperature X-ray diffraction. Two exothermic events have been observed, the first of which takes place without hydrogen evolution. During this stage, the sample loses its crystallinity and birefringence. The products are believed to be a more mobile form of NH3BH3 and the diammoniate of diborane ([NH3BH2NH3]+[BH4]−). These products subsequently react in the second exothermic stage to generate hydrogen.

Abstract:Thermal behavior of ammonia borane BH3NH3 (AB) has been studied by calorimetry, tensimetry and mass spectrometry methods. It is shown, that depending on vapor pressure in the system two competitive processes are taking place at 357K. At atmospheric pressure thermal decomposition with hydrogen evolution is the dominant process: BH3NH3(s) =1/n (BH2NH2) n(s) +H2(g) (1). At low pressures (circa 4mTorr) the major process is endothermic sublimation of AB: BH3NH3(s) =BH3NH3(g) (2). At intermediate pressures both processes occur simultaneously. Enthalpies for the processes (1) and (2) have been determined by drop-calorimetry method: Δ(1) H 357°=−24.8±2.3kJmol−1 and Δsub H 357°(BH3NH3)=76.3±3.0kJmol−1. Solid products after sublimation and decomposition have been characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy; gaseous forms were studied by mass spectrometry. Activation energy of 94±11kJmol−1 for the process (1) in range 327–351K was determined by static tensimetry method. Based on the analysis of available thermodynamic characteristics, new values for the standard formation enthalpy of solid AB −133.4±5.2kJmol−1 and polyamidoborane −156.7±5.8kJmol−1 are recommended.

Abstract:The dynamic mechanisms involved in the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane are investigated using quasi-classical trajectory simulations. The effects of solvent and nuclear motion yield qualitatively different results compared to simulations where these considerations are neglected. Not only are rate-limited barriers substantially different from the gas to solvent phase, trajectories leading from transition states branch to different products depending on the presence or lack of solvent. In addition the formation of the diammoniate of diborane is shown to be noncompetitive in the gas phase due to the presence of lower-barrier dehydrogenation pathway. The first comparative analysis of the pathways leading to the thermolysis of ammonia-borane is presented herein.
From orientation disordered to ordered - An simulation on ammonia borane phase transition within van der Waals corrections.

Abstract:In this work, we report a detailed theoretical investigation of the phase transition of ammonia borane (NH(3) BH(3); AB), from a tetragonal I4mm (C(4v)(9)) phase with disordered orientation of hydrogen to an orthorhombic phase with Pmn2(1) (C(2v)(7)) symmetry, as a function of temperature based on Density Functional Theory calculations with semiempirical dispersion potential correction. We define a series of substructures with the NH(3) BH(3) moiety always in C(3v) symmetry and the partially occupied high temperature state can be described as a continuous transformation between these substructures. To understand the role of the van der Waals corrections to the physical properties, we use the empirical Grimme's dispersion potential correction (PBE-D2). Both Perdew-Burke-Emzerhof (PBE) and PBE-D2 functional yield almost the same energy sequence along the transition path. However, PBE-D2 functional shows obvious advantage in describing the lattice parameters of AB. The rigid rotor harmonic oscillator approximation is used to compute the free energy and the entropies contribution along the transition pathway. With knowledge of free energy surfaces along rotations of the --[NH(3)] and --[BH(3)] groups, complete transformation paths are mapped out. The phase transition is found to follow the sequence of partially occupied tetragonal system (I4mm) of a mixture of states with monoclinic (Cc), (CM) and orthorhombic (Pmn2(1)) symmetries to fully occupied quasitetragonal system (the intermediate phase, Pmn2(1)) to fully occupied orthorhombic system (Pmn2(1)).

Abstract:The Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulation was applied to study the thermal decomposition of solid phase nitromethane under gradual heating and fast annealing conditions. In gradual heating simulations, we found that, rather than C–N bond cleavage, intermolecular proton transfer is more likely to be the first reaction in the decomposition process. At high temperature, the first reaction in fast annealing simulation is intermolecular proton transfer leading to CH3NOOH and CH2NO2, whereas the initial chemical event at low temperature tends to be a unimolecular C–N bond cleavage, producing CH3 and NO2 fragments. It is the first time to date that the direct rupture of a C–N bond has been reported as the first reaction in solid phase nitromethane. In addition, the fast annealing simulations on a supercell at different temperatures are conducted to validate the effect of simulation cell size on initial reaction mechanisms. The results are in qualitative agreement with the simulations on a unit cell. By analyzing the time evolution of some molecules, we also found that the time of first water molecule formation is clearly sensitive to heating rates and target temperatures when the first reaction is an intermolecular proton transfer.

Abstract:Thermochemistry, kinetics, and mechanism of thermal decomposition of 1,5-diaminotetrazole (DAT), a widely used "building block" of nitrogen-rich energetic compounds, were studied theoretically at a high and reliable level of theory (viz., using the explicitly correlated CCSD(T)-F12/aug-cc-pVTZ procedure). Quantum chemical calculations provided detailed insight into the thermolysis mechanism of DAT missing in the existing literature. Moreover, several contradictory assumptions on the mechanism and key intermediates of thermolysis were resolved. The unimolecular primary decomposition reactions of the seven isomers of DAT were studied in the gas phase and in the melt using a simplified model of the latter. The two-step reaction of N2 elimination from the diamino tautomer was found to be the primary decomposition process of DAT in the gas phase and melt. The effective Arrhenius parameters of this process were calculated to be E a = 43.4 kcal mol-1 and log( A/s-1) = 15.2 in a good agreement with the experimental values. Contrary to the existing literature data, all other decomposition channels of DAT isomers turned out to be kinetically unimportant. Apart from this, a new primary decomposition channel yielding N2, cyanamide, and 1,1-diazene was found for some H-bonded dimers of DAT. We also determined a reliable and mutually consistent set of thermochemical values for DAT (Δ f H solid0 = 74.5 ± 1.5 kcal·mol-1) by combining theoretically calculated (W1 multilevel procedure along with an isodesmic reaction) gas phase enthalpy of formation (Δ f H gas0 = 100.7 ± 1.0 kcal·mol-1) and experimentally measured sublimation enthalpy (Δ sub H0 = 26.2 ± 0.5 kcal·mol-1).

Abstract:The thermal behaviour, decomposition kinetics and mechanisms of three diaminotriazole-substituted tetrazine compounds have been investigated using simultaneous DSC-TG and TG/MS techniques. It has been found that TBDM-2NB is much more stable than TBDM-NB and TBDM, where the latter decomposes in two steps with different kinetic parameters. The TBDM decomposes with peak temperature of 379.0 degrees C, while it is 355.6 degrees C and 386.5 degrees C for TBDM-NB and TBDM-2NB, respectively. The activation energy of the first step of TBDM is much higher (176.2 kJ mol(-1)) than the second step (102.3 kJ mol(-1)). The decomposition of TBDM-NB follows 2-d diffusion model, while it is a first order reaction model for TBDM and nucleation growth model for TBDM-2NB. The rearrangement of s-tetrazine ring is typical for thermal decomposition of the title compounds, which may undergo a homo-scission to produce N-2 and followed by production of NH3.

Abstract:An eutectic mixture of tetrabutylammonium bromide and octanol in the molar ratio 1‐10 exhibited a melting point of ‐17°C. This system was investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy, in the liquid and in the solid state. Classical molecular dynamics was performed to study the fine details of the hydrogen bond interactions established in the mixture. Both octanol and the mixtures displayed an almost featureless far‐infrared spectrum in the liquid state but it becomes highly structured in the solid phase. DFT calculations suggest that new vibrational modes appearing in the mixture at low temperatures may be related to the population of the higher energy conformers of the alcohol. Mid‐infrared spectroscopy measurements evidenced no shift of the CH stretching bands in the mixture compared to the starting materials, while the OH stretching are blue shifted by a few cm‐1. Consistently, molecular dynamics provides a picture of the mixture in which the hydrogen bonds (HB) of pure octanol are replaced by weaker HB formed with the TBA ion and the Br cation. Due to these interactions the ionic couple becomes more separated. In agreement with this model, the lengths of all HB are much larger than those observed in acids in previous studies.

Abstract:In this paper, we reported density ρ and viscosity η measurements for pure butylamine and 2-butanone as well as for the binary system [butylamine (1) + 2-butanone (2)] over the whole composition range and at the temperature range of (288.15–318.15) K. Experimental data were fitted to empirical equations, which allow for the calculation of these properties for the pure components and binary system over the whole concentration and temperature ranges studied. In the same way, experimental data of the binary system were further used to calculate the excess molar volume V E and viscosity deviation Δη as a function of composition and temperature using an extended Redlich–Kister [Redlich, O.; Kister, A. T. Algebraic Representation of Thermodynamic Properties and the Classification of Solutions. Ind. Eng. Chem. 1948, 40, 345–348] equation type. The experimental data of the excess molar enthalpy HE for all binary systems and the (vapor + liquid) equilibrium isotherm for binary system [butylamine (1) + 2-butanone (2)] at 298.15 K were also reported, and the excess Gibbs energy GE and excess entropy SE were calculated. The binary system [butylamine (1) + 2-butanone (2)] exhibits an azeotrope and negative deviation from the ideal behavior. On the other hand, the Raman and FTIR spectra confirm molecular associations, heteroassociations, and the inferences obtained from thermophysical properties for binary system [butylamine (1) + 2- butanone (2)].

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of ammonia borane (AB) in the absence and presence of chemical additives was investigated to develop an approach for reducing the induction period for hydrogen release in the solid state. Gas chromatography techniques were used to measure the yield of hydrogen as a function of time under isothermal conditions between 75 and 90 °C to set the baseline. Solid-state 11B-NMR spectroscopy of the products produced after 1 mol equiv of hydrogen had been desorbed from AB (i.e., polyaminoborane) showed a complex mixture of sp3 boron species. Raman microscopy was used to follow the transformation of crystalline AB to amorphous AB upon heating and the subsequent formation of the diammoniate of diborane (DADB). A gas buret was used to monitor the time-dependent release of hydrogen from AB in the presence of chemical additives. The combination of these approaches provides insight into the mechanism of hydrogen release from solid AB. The release of molecular hydrogen is described by a process involving sequential induction (disruption of dihydrogen bonds), nucleation (formation of DADB), and growth (hydrogen release through dehydrocoupling). Addition of DADB or ammonium chloride to neat AB significantly reduces the induction time for hydrogen release. These results provide approaches to improve the hydrogen storage properties of AB.

Solid and Solution State Thermodynamics of Polymorphs of Butamben (Butyl 4-Aminobenzoate) in Pure Organic Solvents

Abstract:The solubility of butamben has been measured gravimetrically in pure methanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, and toluene over the temperature range 268-298 K. Polymorph transition and melting temperatures, associated enthalpy changes, and the heat capacity of the solid forms and the supercooled melt have been measured by differential scanning calorimetry. Based on extrapolated calorimetric data, the Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy of fusion, and the activity of solid butamben (the ideal solubility) have been calculated from below ambient temperature up to the melting point. Activity coefficients of butamben at equilibrium in the different solvents have been estimated from solubility data and the activity of the solid, revealing that all investigated systems exhibit positive deviation from Raoult's law. Solubility data are well correlated by a semiempirical regression model. On a mass basis, the solubility is clearly higher in methanol than in the other solvents, but mole fraction solubilities are very similar across all 5 solvents. The 2 known polymorphs are enantiotropically related, and the transition point is located at 283 K. Polymorph interconversions occur within 0.3 K of the transition point even in the solid state, and the 2 forms exhibit strong similarities in investigated properties.

Abstract:The process of rearrangement of the octadecahydroeicosaborate anion [ trans -B 20 H 18 ] 2– → [ iso -B 20 H 18 ] 2– in organic solvents (acetonitrile, DMF, DMSO) under UV irradiation has been studied using 11 B NMR spectroscopy in dynamics. It has been shown that the time of complete isomeric transition depends on the solvent used. In acetonitrile, complete conversion of the [ trans -B 20 H 18 ] 2– anion to the iso form is achieved in 1 h; in DMF, the process takes about 2 h; in DMSO, it takes about 3 h. The reverse process of rearrangement of the macropolyhedral borohydride anion [ iso -B 20 H 18 ] 2– → [ trans -B 20 H 18 ] 2– has been studied under the influence of temperature in DMF; it has been shown that an increase in the reaction time and temperature of the reaction solution is accompanied by degradation of the boron cluster.

Abstract:n-Butanal is a key intermediate formed during the low-temperature oxidation of hydrocarbons and is also a toxic pollutant during the high-temperature oxidation of biofuels. In this work, its low-temperature oxidation chemistry was studied over the temperature range of 500-900 K in a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) at 700 Torr. Synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry was employed to identify and quantify the intermediates. A total of 40 species were detected including some reactive peroxy radicals and hydroperoxide species. Speciation measurements obtained in this work can serve as validation targets for new reaction mechanisms, providing new kinetic insights into the n-butanal low-temperature oxidation. Particularly, the O-2-addition to the carbonyl radical of n-butanal (n-C3H7CO) proves to be a competing channel with the direct decomposition, which is supported by our experimental results. First-principles Study of Structure of Ammonia Borane

Abstract:Two kinds of crystal structures(Pmn2_1 and P4_2cm) of(ammonia borane) are studied using first-principles plane wave pseudopotential method based on density functional theory in this paper. It was found that the Pmn2_1 structure is energetically more stable than the P4_2cm structure at 0 K. This agrees well with the experimental observation,that lower temperature phase is the Pmn2_1 structure whereas the room temperature phase is P4_2cm structure.The structure difference between Pmn2_1 and P4_2cm phases manifests itself mainly by the variation of intermolecular bond length whereas the intramolecular bond length remains almost unchanged.Electronic state of density was calculated to identify the bonding nature of ammonia borane.The XRD and FTIR patterns of the P4_2cm structure were calculated,results agree well with the experimental results of AB at room temperature.
