Abstract:The structural, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of -octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (-HMX) crystal have been studied using the isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics (NPT-MD) simulations. The variations of cell volume, lattice constants and molecular geometry of solid -HMX are presented and discussed at different pressure and temperature. It was found that the N-N bond is significantly lengthened with increasing temperature, which suggests that it is relevant to the initial decomposition. An abrupt change at 27 Gpa for the volume and internal geometrical parameters was observed. This is in good accord with the experimental observation that there is a phase transition at 27 GPa, which is clearly due to conformational change, not chemical reaction. The vibrational frequencies at ambient conditions agree well with experimental results, and the pressure/temperature-induced frequency shifts of these modes are discussed. Frequency discontinuity was also observed at pressure when the phase transition occurred. The Gruneisen parameter was obtained using the vibrational frequency.

Abstract:The phase transitions and mechanical properties of the energetic material octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) in three pure polymorphs crystals, alpha-, beta-, and delta-phases, have been studied theoretically. isothermal isobaric molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed in the temperature range of (5 to 555) K at 0 GPa and the pressure range of (0 to 40) GPa at 298 K. The lattice parameters and volumes show nonlinear dependence on the temperature and pressure. In the high-temperature regime, there exist two phase transitions, that is, from beta- to alpha-HMX at 360 K and from alpha- to delta-HMX at 440 K. Under high pressure, the beta-HMX transition to delta-HMX is shown at 27 GPa and 298 K. Within the range of temperature and pressure studies, it can be deduced that the beta-HMX at lower temperatures and higher pressures, the alpha-HMX at higher pressures, and the delta-HMX at lower temperatures have better malleability.
Ab Initio Neural Network MD Simulation of Thermal Decomposition of a High Energy Material CL-20/TNT.

Abstract:CL-20 (2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane, also known as HNIW) is one of the most powerful energetic materials. However, its high sensitivity to environmental stimuli greatly reduces its safety and severely limits its application. In this work, ab initio based neural network potential (NNP) energy surfaces for both β-CL-20 and CL-20/TNT co-crystals were constructed. To accurately simulate the thermal decomposition processes of these two crystal systems, reactive molecular dynamics simulations based on the NNPs were performed. Many important intermediate species and their associated reaction paths during the decomposition had been identified in the simulations and the direct results on detonation temperatures of both systems were provided. The simulations also showed clearly that 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) molecules in the co-crystal act as a buffer to slow down the chain reactions triggered by nitrogen dioxide and this effect is more significant at lower temperatures. Specifically, the addition of TNT molecules in the CL-20/TNT co-crystal introduces intermolecular hydrogen bonds between CL-20 and TNT molecules in the system, thereby increasing the thermal stability of the co-crystal. The current reactive molecular dynamics simulation is performed based on the NNP which helps in accelerating the speed of ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation by more than 3 orders of magnitude while preserving the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This enabled us to perform longer-time simulations at more realistic temperatures that traditional AIMD methods cannot achieve. With the advantage of the NNP in its powerful fitting ability and transferability, the NNP-based MD simulation can be widely applied to energetic material systems.
Reactive molecular dynamics simulation of thermal decomposition for nitromethane/nano-aluminum composites

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of pure nitromethane (NM) and NM/nano-aluminum (Al) composites was simulated by reactive molecular dynamics with ReaxFF-lg corrected force field parameters. The initial decomposition pathway of NM molecules in pure NM is C-N bond rupture. However, NM is decomposed early by the initial pathway of N-O bond rupture when it mixes with nano-Al because of the strong attraction of Al to O. The decomposition process of NM/nano-Al can be divided into three stages: adsorption, slow decomposition, and rapid decomposition. The addition of nano-Al particles decreases the energy barrier in decomposition, increases the released energy, and reduces the decomposition temperature of NM. Adding 3% Al to the explosive can make the detonation pressure 3.083% higher than that of pure system. Compared with pure NM, the energy barrier of 16% Al composite is 25.63 kcal/mol lower and the energy released is 22.99 kcal/mol more. There is an optimal amount of Al contents being added to the NM composite by which the largest total numbers of gaseous products (N2, H2O, and CO2) are released. The effect of Al additives on CO2 production is the most obvious. The maximum detonation pressure can be achieved by adding an appropriate amount of nano-Al, which is similar to the experimental results. Graphical abstract.

Abstract:The molecular structures and thermal decomposition of nitromethane confined inside a armchair (5,5) single-wall carbon nanotube were studied by using the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and ONIOM level of theory. Results show that nitromethane confined inside a CNT(5,5) has no Cs symmetry and the C—N bond becomes short slightly. Analysis of the potential energy curves along the C—N bond length shows that a transition state exists for the thermal decomposition of nitromethane/CNT(5,5),which is different from that of nitromethane monomer (no transition state for the C—N bond dissociation). For nitromethane/CNT(5,5),the energy barrier of the transition state is calculated to be about 198 kJ·mol-1,which is about 21 kJ·mol-1 lower than that of the C—N bond dissociation energy of nitromethane monomer. In addition,calculated results show that the (5,5) single-wall carbon nanotube has effect on the changing in the molecular structure and electronic charge of NO2 and CH3 groups during the thermal decomposition process of nitromethane.
Thermal Decomposition Mechanism of Nitroglycerin by ReaxFF Reactive Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:The decomposition processes of nitroglycerin (NG) at various temperatures (2500, 2750, 3000, 3250 and 3500 K) are simulated by the reactive molecular dynamics simulations with ReaxFF-lg. The initial decomposition pathway of NG, the evolution of the main products and the reaction kinetic parameters for the different stages are analyzed. The results show that the main initial decomposition mechanisms of NG are O-NO2 bond dissociation and the hydrogen capture reaction of NO2. The main products of NG thermal decomposition are NO2, NO, HNO, CO2, N2, and H2O, while CO2, N2, and H2O are the final products. As the temperature increases, the processes of O-NO2 bond dissociation and the hydrogen capture reaction of NO2 accelerate, resulting in accelerated decomposition of NG. The reaction kinetic parameters are calculated for three different reaction stages. The activation energy and the pre-exponential factor obtained in the initial decomposition stage are 69.58 kcal mol−1 and 32.53 s−1. The activation energy and the pre-exponential factor obtained in the intermediate decomposition stage are 111.78 kcal mol−1 and 29.12 s−1. At 3250 K, the rate constants of N2 and CO2 reach maximum while the rate constant of H2O increases continuously with increasing temperature. Accordingly, the mechanism of initial thermal decomposition of NG under the high temperatures is proposed detailedly.

Abstract:The decomposition process of 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) crystal at high temperatures (2500 and 3390 K) and detonation pressure of 33.4 GPa coupled with temperatures were studied by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the initial decomposition mechanism of LLM-105 is the same under different conditions. The product analysis indicates that high temperature is conducive to the formation of N 2 and CO 2 , but inhibited the formation of H 2 O. It is found that the formation mechanism of H 2 O is the same under different conditions, which involves the reaction between OH radical and H radical. Although the detailed processes of the formation of N 2 are different, they all involve the reaction between nitrogen-containing fragments, and its core is the formation of intermediates with R 1 -NN-R 2 structure. The core of the formation of CO 2 under different conditions is to form the intermediate R 1 -CO-R 2 with carbonyl structure, and then generate the fragment with -OCO- structure, and finally generate CO 2 . This research may provide new insights into the initiation and subsequent decomposition mechanisms of energetic materials under extreme conditions.

Abstract:The CL-20/MTNI cocrystal, as a novel energetic material (EMs), possesses the advantages of high energy content and low sensitivity, making it a promising substitute for traditional EMs. However, the thermal decomposition mechanism of this cocrystal has not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, we utilized the ReaxFF/lg force field to study the thermal decomposition of CL-20/MTNI cocrystal at different temperatures (2500, 2750, 3000, 3250, and 3500 K) and pressures (3000 K/0.5 GPa, 3000 K/1.0 GPa, and 3000 K/1.5 GPa). The evolution of species, initial decomposition mechanisms, and changes in the number of final products were analyzed. The results indicate that hexanitrohexaazoisowuzane (CL-20) completely decomposes within 55 ps, while 1-methyl-2,4,5-trinitroimidazole (MTNI) decomposes completely within 110 ps, suggesting that CL-20 has lower thermal stability compared to MTNI. The high-temperature decomposition of CL-20/MTNI cocrystal exhibits three main possible reaction pathways. Firstly, the denitration of CL-20 occurs, followed by the denitration of MTNI, and finally, the nitro group isomerization of MTNI. This indicates that the nitro groups in CL-20 have lower thermal stability compared to those in MTNI within the CL-20/MTNI cocrystal. Analysis of the five final products reveals that the quantities of NO 2 and NO are higher than other species, attributed to the higher nitrogen and oxygen content in the CL-20/MTNI cocrystal structure. As the temperature increases, the decomposition and conversion of NO 2 are accelerated, leading to a sharp decrease in the quantity of NO 2 and an increase in the content of NO. However, when the pressure increases, both the quantities of NO 2 and NO exhibit a trend of initially increasing and then decreasing, with a noticeable increase in the quantity of N 2 . This indicates that high pressure accelerates the thermal decomposition of NO 2 and NO.

Thermochemical and Kinetic Analysis of the Thermal Decomposition of Monomethylhydrazine: an Elementary Reaction Mechanism

Abstract:The reaction kinetics for the thermal decomposition of monomethylhydrazine (MMH) was studied with quantum Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel (QRRK) theory and a master equation analysis for pressure falloff. Thermochemical properties were determined by ab initio and density functional calculations. The entropies, S degrees (298.15 K), and heat capacities, Cp degrees (T) (0 < or = T/K < or = 1500), from vibrational, translational, and external rotational contributions were calculated using statistical mechanics based on the vibrational frequencies and structures obtained from the density functional study. Potential barriers for internal rotations were calculated at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level, and hindered rotational contributions to S degrees (298.15 K) and Cp degrees (T) were calculated by solving the Schrödinger equation with free rotor wave functions, and the partition coefficients were treated by direct integration over energy levels of the internal rotation potentials. Enthalpies of formation, DeltafH degrees (298.15 K), for the parent MMH (CH3NHNH2) and its corresponding radicals CH3N*NH2, CH3NHN*H, and C*H2NHNH2 were determined to be 21.6, 48.5, 51.1, and 62.8 kcal mol(-1) by use of isodesmic reaction analysis and various ab initio methods. The kinetic analysis of the thermal decomposition, abstraction, and substitution reactions of MMH was performed at the CBS-QB3 level, with those of N-N and C-N bond scissions determined by high level CCSD(T)/6-311++G(3df,2p)//MPWB1K/6-31+G(d,p) calculations. Rate constants of thermally activated MMH to dissociation products were calculated as functions of pressure and temperature. An elementary reaction mechanism based on the calculated rate constants, thermochemical properties, and literature data was developed to model the experimental data on the overall MMH thermal decomposition rate. The reactions of N-N and C-N bond scission were found to be the major reaction paths for the modeling of MMH homogeneous decomposition at atmospheric conditions.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of methane at constant temperatures and densities ranging from 0.05 to 0.524 g/cm 3 has been simulated using methods of molecular dynamics and equilibrium thermodynamics. The molecular-dynamics simulation of the initial stage of methane decomposition has been performed using the reaction force field ReaxFF-lg at temperatures of 2500–4000 K. The simulation results showed that the methane decomposition consists of the successive formation and decay of radicals and light hydrocarbons and their replacement with polyatomic hydrocarbons of increasing complexity, similar to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, whose decomposition and aggregation leads to generation of condensed-carbon nucleation centers. In turn, the results of the thermodynamic calculations indicate that the methane decomposition begins and occurs at lower temperatures as compared with the results of ultrashort nonequilibrium calculations by the molecular dynamics method. Thus, the application of molecular dynamics and thermodynamics methods for the same process presents extreme versions of possible sequences of states in the cases of ultrashort nonequilibrium and long-term, similar to equilibrium, processes of methane thermal decomposition.

Abstract:Context: To investigate the influence of two typical nitro explosives, 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) and nitroguanidine (NQ), on the thermal decomposition mechanism of 3,4-Bis (3-nitrofurazan-4-yl) furoxan (DNTF). The study simulates the dynamical behavior of the DNTF/DNTF, DNTF/NQ, and DNTF/LLM-105 systems at different temperatures. We analyzed their thermal decomposition mechanisms through decomposition processes, reaction paths, and product evolution. Building on our analysis of thermal decomposition mechanisms, we found that introducing these two components (NQ and LLM-105) significantly alters the decomposition mechanism of DNTF. This introduction promotes the breakdown of DNTF molecules, modifies the thermal decomposition processes, and consequently changes the reaction pathways. In the DNTF/DNTF system, the product C3N4O4 remains stable, while the N-O bond in NO2 undergoes repeated breaking and formation, ultimately converting into NO. Conversely, in the mixed system, NO2 persists throughout the simulation, while the reaction product C3N4O4 undergoes additional reactions and eventually disappears at higher temperatures. This behavioral disparity determines distinct decomposition mechanisms between the mixed and pure DNTF systems. Methods: To investigate the thermal decomposition mechanisms of DNTF/LLM-105 and DNTF/NQ composite energetic materials, the first-principles calculation software CP2K is used. The GFNI-xTB (Geometry, Frequency, and Noncovalent, eXtended Tight Binding) program within CP2K is employed. This method provides a powerful tool for performing calculations with arbitrary accuracy on complex systems.
Metallization and molecular dissociation of dense fluid nitrogen

Abstract:Diatomic nitrogen is an archetypal molecular system known for its exceptional stability and complex behavior at high pressures and temperatures, including rich solid polymorphism, formation of energetic states, and an insulator-to-metal transformation coupled to a change in chemical bonding. However, the thermobaric conditions of the fluid molecular-polymer phase boundary and associated metallization have not been experimentally established. Here, by applying dynamic laser heating of compressed nitrogen and using fast optical spectroscopy to study electronic properties, we observe a transformation from insulating (molecular) to conducting dense fluid nitrogen at temperatures that decrease with pressure, and establish that metallization, and presumably fluid polymerization, occurs above 125 GPa at 2500 K. Our observations create a better understanding of the interplay between molecular dissociation, melting, and metallization revealing features that are common in simple molecular systems.

Abstract:Thermal decomposition of 1-methyl-3,4,5-trinitropyrazole (MTNP), a melt-cast explosive, was investigated at different temperatures (2500, 2750, 3000, 3250, and 3500 K) and pressures (3000 K/0.5 GPa, 3000 K/1 GPa) using the ReaxFF/lg force field. The study aimed to analyze the changes in reactant quantities, initial reaction pathways, and final product yields. The results demonstrated that complete decomposition of MTNP molecules occurred within a timeframe of 200 ps, with shorter decomposition times observed as the temperature increased. The high-temperature thermal decomposition of MTNP was found to follow two primary reaction pathways. Reaction 1 involved denitration, while reaction 2 proceeded with nitro group isomerization. DFT calculations indicated that nitro group isomerization was the most favorable reaction. During the initial stages, higher quantities of NO 2 , NO, and N 2 were observed compared to other species. This can be attributed to the relatively higher nitrogen and oxygen content in the MTNP structure. Among the five reaction temperatures, it was observed that the quantities of small molecules followed the order of NO 2 > NO > N 2 > CO. Moreover, with increasing temperature, the quantities of all four small molecules increased, indicating that higher temperatures promoted the progression of the reactions. However, as the pressure increased, there was a trend of initially increasing and then decreasing to zero for the quantities of NO 2 and NO. This suggests that high temperature accelerated the high-temperature thermal decomposition of NO 2 and NO, leading to a significant increase in the content of N 2 .

Temperature and pressure effect on the HMX/Graphene mixture system thermal decomposition via ReaxFF molecular dynamic simulation

Abstract:Abstract Study the detail mechanisms of energetic materials thermal decomposition process at high temperature, is helpful to understand the detail reaction information and mechanism, which are foundation for understanding reactivity of energetic materials, design of mixed explosives and safety. In this work, new model and method effect of temperature and pressure for graphene (Gr) based HMX crystal were determined by ReaxFF molecular dynamic simulation. The thermal decomposition process, HMX molecules absorption on Gr surface of perfect HMX crystal, different direction crystal planes and HMX/Gr mixed models were studied at high temperature and pressure. The different configurations of HMX molecules adsorbed on graphene surface in the mixed system were confirmed by theoretical calculation method. We observed 3, 5 and 3 HMX configurations absorption on the graphene in the (001)/Gr, (010)/Gr and (100)/Gr range from normal pressure to 31 GPa, respectively. The time-dependent curves of fragments evolution, intermediates and pyrolysis products were analyzed. The results show that the rate constants of HMX molecules during thermal decomposition process can be significantly affect by adding graphene with HMX crystal. Gr is the most obvious inhibition effect on the thermal decomposition reaction of (010) surface of HMX/Gr, which indicates that graphene has a coupling between the temperature and thermal anisotropy effect, because of the NO 2 functional groups steric hindrance and the interaction between graphene and HMX molecules. Gr also affects the initial reaction pathways of homolytic cleavage of N-NO 2 bond forming nitro radical and HONO through the C=O, C-OH and C-OC bonds formation on graphene surface.
Multi-aspect and comprehensive atomic insight: the whole process of thermolysis of HMX/Poly-NIMMO-based plastic bonded explosive

Abstract:Based on the reactive molecular dynamics, the whole process of thermolysis of HMX/Poly-NIMMO-based PBX was studied in detail at the micro scale, which provided a novel atomic insight into the thermolysis mechanism of HMX/Poly-NIMMO. Further, it was compared with the HMX single substance system to explore the influence of binder on thermolysis of HMX. According to the findings, the activation energy required by pyrolysis of HMX in the mixed system is much less than that required by the pure HMX system at both phases. From the point of view of reaction energy, poly-NIMMO promoted the thermolysis of HMX. Especially, the mechanism analysis confirmed this point. The nitro and hydroxyl groups detached from Poly-NIMMO will react with HMX, and the generated HNO2 will further accelerate the decomposition process of nitrogen heterocycles. In addition, the number of the final products H2O and H2 in the two-component system increased greatly, but the number of CO2 and N2 molecules had not changed much, and C clusters were formed in the system. The evolution trend of bond number further verified the above analysis. While the maximum cluster number does drop with increasing temperature at first, after a particular temperature threshold is reached, it remains unchanged. In a nutshell, poly-NIMMO will hasten HMX's thermolysis and reduce the system's stability when subjected to heat.
Thermal Decomposition of Monomethylhydrazine: Shock Tube Experiments and Kinetic Modeling

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of gaseous monomethylhydrazine (MMH) was studied by recording MMH absorption at 220 nm of the reacting gas behind a reflected shock wave at temperatures of 900–1370 K, pressures of 140–450 kPa, and in mixtures containing 97.5–99 mol% argon. Based on previous work (Sun and Law; J Phys Chem A 2007, 111(19), 3748–3760), a kinetic mechanism was developed over extended temperature and pressure ranges to model these experimental data. Specifically, the temperature and pressure dependence of the unimolecular rate coefficients on the dissociation of MMH and the associated radicals were calculated by the QRRK/Master equation analysis at temperatures of 300–2000 K and pressures of 1–100 atm based on published thermochemical and kinetic parameters. They were then fitted using the Troe formalism and incorporated in the kinetic model. This unadjusted model was then used to predict the MMH decomposition profiles at different temperatures and pressures for seven groups of MMH/Ar mixtures and the half-life decomposition times from shock tube experiments. Good agreement was observed below 940 K and above 1150 K for the diluted MMH/Ar mixtures. The model predictions further show that the overall MMH decomposition rate follows first-order kinetics, and that the N–N bond scission is the most sensitive reaction path for the modeling of the homogeneous decomposition of MMH at elevated pressures. However, the model predictions deviate from the experimental data with the incubation period of ca. 100 μs observed in the 1030–1090 K temperature range, and it also predicts longer ignition delays for highly concentrated MMH/Ar mixtures. The discrepancy between the model predictions and experimental data at these special conditions of MMH decomposition was analyzed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet 41: 176–186, 2009

Abstract:Nitro-based ionic liquids are promising green propellants that have been studied as substitutes for hydrazine. An in-depth study of their thermal decomposition mechanism is important to further improve their combustion efficiency. In this work, pyrolysis experiments of hydroxylamine nitrate (HAN) and 2-hydroxyethylhydrazinium nitrate (HEHN) were carried out by using a flow reactor combined with synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry. The mole fraction distribution of the pyrolysis products was quantitatively measured. In addition, to further understand the decomposition mechanism of nitro-based ionic liquids, we performed quantum chemical calculations on 2-hydroxyethylhydrazine (HEH), the initial decomposition product of HEHN, at the CCSD(T)/BH&HLYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. The calculation results show that bond fission and hydrogen migration are potential driving forces in the overall pyrolysis process. In particular, nitric acid plays an important role in the autocatalytic decomposition behavior of HEH. These results on the thermal decomposition of these two ionic liquids provide valuable references for the future kinetic modeling of nitro-based ionic liquids.

Abstract:To investigate the thermal decomposition mechanism between Poly(3-nitratomethyl-3- methyloxetane) (PNIMMO) and 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12-Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20), the thermal decomposition of PNIMMO, CL-20 and PNIMMO+CL-20 mixture under different conditions was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry-mass spectra-fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TG-DSC-MS/FTIR) and in-situ FTIR experiments. As a result, the exothermic peak temperature of the PNIMMO+CL-20 mixture shifts to lower values under both closed and open circumstances compared to CL-20. Different kinetic parameters and models were obtained for the three decomposition steps in the mixture. The first step follows the random chain scission model (L2) at α <0.5, and the phase boundary controlled reaction model (R3) at α >0.5. The second/third step is between the random chain scission model (L2) and the first-order reaction model (F1) at α <0.5, and conforms to the first-order reaction model (F1) at α >0.5. Thus, the decomposition of PNIMMO controls the initial speed, while the removal of the nitro group in CL-20 controls the later step. Combined with the analysis of gas products and condensed phase, PNIMMO speeds up the N—NO 2 bond breaking in CL-20 but doesn't alter its initial breakdown route.

Abstract:Solid nitrogen has received widespread attention. In this paper, the calculated structural, electronic, phonon and mechanical properties are used to investigate the phase transition of solid nitrogen (space group P42/mnm). Acoustic phonons can be divided into two parts. One acoustic phonon shows that tetragonal solid nitrogen is dynamically stable at c-axis, while the remaining two acoustic phonons have virtual frequencies at a,b-axis. The virtual frequency of phonon indicates that tetragonal solid nitrogen has a structural softening process. We point out that the softening process of acoustic phonon is considered to be related to the phase transition. Based on the results in our calculation, the phase transition of tetragonal solid nitrogen starts at a,b-axis along <math>[001¯]</math> direction (from k-point Z to <math>Γ</math>). The negative group velocity of phonon is considered as the speed of phase transition. The phase transition velocity is increasing under pressure, and the low pressure corresponds to low velocity.
