Abstract:One equivalent of hydrogen gas is evolved from ammonia borane (NH3BH3) when it is heated above 70°C. The initial stages of this process have been examined using TG/DSC, optical microscopy, and high temperature X-ray diffraction. Two exothermic events have been observed, the first of which takes place without hydrogen evolution. During this stage, the sample loses its crystallinity and birefringence. The products are believed to be a more mobile form of NH3BH3 and the diammoniate of diborane ([NH3BH2NH3]+[BH4]−). These products subsequently react in the second exothermic stage to generate hydrogen.

Abstract:Ammonia borane(BH3NH3) is a promising hydrogen storage material because of its high gravimetric (19.6 wt% H2) and volumetric hydrogen density with an accompanying moderate decomposition temperature. Previously reported structures determined by using x-ray and neutron diffraction on hydrides show differences in bond lengths and atomic coordination. Here, the crystal structures of fully and half deuterated ammonia borane were investigated as a function of temperature using powder neutron diffraction. The neutron diffraction patterns show a significant difference due to large difference in the scattering length of D and H. It is evident that an order-disorder phase transition occurs around 225 K for all compounds. At low temperature, the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure with space group Pnm21 and gradually transforms to a high temperature disordered tetragonal structure with space group I/4mm at about 225K. The differential scanning calorimetry studies confirm this phase transformation and also indicate that all compounds melt and decompose at above 370 K. The c cell parameter remains unchanged in the orthorhombic phase from 16 K to 200K and increases liaa nearly above 225K. As the temperature is increased, the BH3-NH3 groups start to reorient along the c axis, and the D/H atoms become disordered, leading to the tetragonal phase transition around 225K.
The onset of dehydrogenation in solid Ammonia Borane, an ab-initio metadynamics study

Abstract:The discovery of effective hydrogen storage materials is fundamental for the progress of a clean energy economy. Ammonia borane ($\mathrm{H_3BNH_3}$) has attracted great interest as a promising candidate but the reaction path that leads from its solid phase to hydrogen release is not yet fully understood. To address the need for insights in the atomistic details of such a complex solid state process, in this work we use \textit{ab-initio} molecular dynamics and metadynamics to study the early stages of AB dehydrogenation. We show that the formation of ammonia diborane ($\mathrm{H_3NBH_2(}$$\mu$$\mathrm{-H)BH_3}$) leads to the release of $\mathrm{NH_4^+}$, which in turn triggers an autocatalytic $\mathrm{H_2}$ production cycle. Our calculations provide a model for how complex solid state reactions can be theoretically investigated and rely upon the presence of multiple ammonia borane molecules, as substantiated by standard quantum-mechanical simulations on a cluster.

Abstract:Ammonia borane is a promising material for hydrogen storage. In particular, its metal-catalyzed hydrolysis, which can occur under mild conditions and release a high amount (7%–8%) of hydrogen, has attracted considerable recent attention. Most previous studies have sought to improve the hydrolysis rate, leading to a relatively asymmetric research trend, where some potential problems must be overcome before its industrialization. A comprehensive analysis and systematic overview of current research would therefore be helpful to future works. This review first discusses the hydrolysis of ammonia borane in detail. It then summarizes and analyzes recent development of metal catalysts. Some challenges related to the hydrolysis system are also discussed, and finally, some perspectives on emerging issues regarding the future development of this system are provided.

Direct Pyrolysis Dehydrogenation Mechanism of Ammonia Borane and Alkali Metal Substituted Ammonia Borane

Abstract:As a material with high hydrogen storage density, ammonia borane has attracted the attention of researchers. Ammonia borane can release hydrogen gas through hydrolytic dehydrogenation and pyrolysis dehydrogenation, where hydrolytic dehydrogenation has a low actual hydrogen storage density and is expensive, which is not conducive to practical application. Direct thermal dehydrogenation research shows that improving the dehydrogenation performance of ammonia borane by metal substitution can not only increase the dehydrogenation rate, but also suppress the generation of impurity gases. In this paper, the density functional theory (DFT) is used to calculate the structural parameters, density of states, and HOMO-LUMO energy difference to obtain the dehydrogenation stability of ammonia borane and alkali metal substituted ammonia borane. Subsequently, the reaction energy barriers of the N-H ... H-B path and the M-H ... H-N path are calculated to obtain which dehydrogenation path is easy to occur. The results show that alkali metal substituted ammonia borane MAB(M = Li, Na, K) is easier to dehydrogenate than AB, and MAB is more likely to dehydrogenate by forming M-H ... H-N double hydrogen bonds. Density functional theory calculations can obtain the structural parameters and related thermodynamic information of each stagnation point on the dehydrogenation reaction path, which provides theoretical guidance for the research and improvement of the dehydrogenation performance of ammonia borane.
A First-Principles Simulation of the Metal Borohydride Ammonia Borane Complex (libh4)2(nh3bh3) and the Decomposition Reaction Pathway for Hydrogen Storage

Abstract:In this work, we predict a range of favorable functional properties of (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3, a relatively new member of the boron-containing metal borohydride ammonia borane family, by means of ab initio calculations, as well as its parent compounds, LiBH4 and NH3BH3, for comparisons. Both the mechanical and dynamical stabilities of this new compound have been demonstrated theoretically for the first time. Results from elastic modulus calculations show that the mechanical properties of (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3 are remarkably improved compared with its parent compounds. Secondly, Electronic structure results show that it remains to an insulator with large band gap typical of the boron containing hydrogenous family, but the band gap can be tuned by the compositions of NH3BH3 and LiBH4. Charge analysis demonstrates that charge transfers in individual layers of LiBH4 and NH3BH3 are similar to LiBH4 and NH3BH3, respectively. A measurable amount of charge transfers from the LiBH4 layers to the NH3BH3 layers result in enhanced activation properties for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation in (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3. Thirdly, Free energies of six possible dehydrogenation reactions have been calculated from 0 K to 700 K, and the results show that combination of NH3BH3 and LiBH4 can reduce the dehydrogenation energies compared with the parent compounds, a result consistent with recent experiments. Meanwhile, the N-B bond strengths increase and thereby borazine and diborane formation are reduced upon dehydrogenation. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Ammonia borane (NH(3)BH(3), AB) is a unique molecular crystal containing an intriguingly high density of hydrogen. In the past several years, AB has received extensive attention as a promising hydrogen storage medium. Several strategies have been successfully developed for promoting H(2) release and for suppressing the evolution of volatile by-products from the solid-state thermolysis of AB. Several potentially cost-effective and energy-efficient routes for regenerating AB from the spent fuels have been experimentally demonstrated. These remarkable technological advances offer a promising prospect of using AB-based materials as viable H(2) carriers for on-board application. In this perspective, the recent progresses in promoting H(2) release from the solid-state thermolysis of AB and in developing regeneration technologies are briefly reviewed.

Abstract:Ammonia borane (AB, NH3BH3) is considered as one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cells due to its high theoretical hydrogen capacity under moderate temperatures. Unfortunately, its on-board application is hampered by the sluggish kinetics, volatile byproducts and harsh conditions for reversibility. In this work, AB and AlH3 were simultaneously infiltrated into a carbon nanotube array (CMK-5) to combine the synergistic effect of alane with nanoconfinement for improving the dehydrogenation properties of AB. Results showed that the transformation from AB to DADB started at room temperature, which promoted AB to release 9.4 wt% H2 within 10 min at a low temperature of 95 °C. Moreover, the entire suppression of all harmful byproducts was observed.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of ammonia borane (AB) in the absence and presence of chemical additives was investigated to develop an approach for reducing the induction period for hydrogen release in the solid state. Gas chromatography techniques were used to measure the yield of hydrogen as a function of time under isothermal conditions between 75 and 90 °C to set the baseline. Solid-state 11B-NMR spectroscopy of the products produced after 1 mol equiv of hydrogen had been desorbed from AB (i.e., polyaminoborane) showed a complex mixture of sp3 boron species. Raman microscopy was used to follow the transformation of crystalline AB to amorphous AB upon heating and the subsequent formation of the diammoniate of diborane (DADB). A gas buret was used to monitor the time-dependent release of hydrogen from AB in the presence of chemical additives. The combination of these approaches provides insight into the mechanism of hydrogen release from solid AB. The release of molecular hydrogen is described by a process involving sequential induction (disruption of dihydrogen bonds), nucleation (formation of DADB), and growth (hydrogen release through dehydrocoupling). Addition of DADB or ammonium chloride to neat AB significantly reduces the induction time for hydrogen release. These results provide approaches to improve the hydrogen storage properties of AB.

Abstract:Ammonia borane (AB) is considered to be a promising chemical hydrogen storage material with high hydrogen storage density (19.6%), which can release three molar equivalents of hydrogen through catalytic hydrolysis at room temperature. However, AB releases hydrogen slowly in water, it is necessary to develop highly active metal nanocatalysts to accelerate the process of hydrolysis. This article provides an overview of the synthesis and characterization methods of ammonia borane, the mechanism of hydrolysis and catalytic hydrogen production using the unique dihydrogen key in the ammonia borane structure, and the various factors that affect the hydrogen release performance of AB.

Abstract:The study of ammonia borane (AB) with controllable dehydrogenations is an active research topic for solid-state hydrogen storage materials. The present work shows that tuning the reactivity of both B-H and N-H bonds in AB by alkaline earth metal chlorides not only results in a significantly decrease in the onset dehydrogenation temperature to 40 degrees C but also suppresses undesirable volatile by-products due to the incorporation of alkaline earth metal chlorides in the AB dehydrogenation process. Abstract:Hydrogen storage for vehicular applications requires high gravimetric/volumetric storage capacity. Ammonia borane (NH3BH3, AB), having hydrogen content as high as 19.6wt%, has been considered as a highly potential hydrogen storage medium for on-board applications. The AB hydrolytic dehydrogenation system presents a hydrogen capacity up to 7.8wt% of the starting materials AB and H2O, showing its high potential for chemical hydrogen storage. With significant research efforts, the reaction kinetics has been greatly enhanced under ambient conditions and the catalyst cost has been remarkably lowered for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB in recent five years. Herein, we briefly review the research progresses in catalytic hydrolytic dehydrogeneration from ammonia borane for chemical hydrogen storage. Moreover, we also concisely discuss hydrogen release from aqueous hydrazine boranes, derivatives of AB, as new hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract:Two new derivatives of ammonia borane (AB), 1,2/1,3-di-aminopropane borane (1,2/1,3-TMDAB), were prepared through the coordination reaction between 1,2/1,3-di-aminopropane and BH3-THF, which were then characterized by HR-XRD, FT-IR, C-13 and B-11 NMR. The crystal structure of 1,3-TMDAB was obtained with a combined technique of HR-XRD data and DFT calculations. 1,3-TMDAB crystallizes in the space group of P2(1)2(1)2(1) (no. 19) with an orthorhombic crystal system and lattice constants of a 12.6439(8) angstrom, b - 8.6289(3) angstrom, c - 7.2322(2)angstrom, and V - 789.05(3) angstrom(3).Both samples, with a theoretical hydrogen content of 9.8 wt%, were shown to release pure H-2 during thermal dehydrogenation, presenting great advantages over AB which releases large amounts of impurities (such as NH3, B2H6 or borazine). Moreover, 1,2/1,3-TMDAB did not foam and showed a faster dehydrogenation rate compared with AB. Our newly synthesized 1,2/1,3-TMDAB may serve as a superior alternative to AB for hydrogen storage and enrich the research field of B-N-H hydrogen storage materials.
Sublimation and thermal decomposition of ammonia borane: Competitive processes controlled by pressure

Abstract:Thermal behavior of ammonia borane BH3NH3 (AB) has been studied by calorimetry, tensimetry and mass spectrometry methods. It is shown, that depending on vapor pressure in the system two competitive processes are taking place at 357K. At atmospheric pressure thermal decomposition with hydrogen evolution is the dominant process: BH3NH3(s) =1/n (BH2NH2) n(s) +H2(g) (1). At low pressures (circa 4mTorr) the major process is endothermic sublimation of AB: BH3NH3(s) =BH3NH3(g) (2). At intermediate pressures both processes occur simultaneously. Enthalpies for the processes (1) and (2) have been determined by drop-calorimetry method: Δ(1) H 357°=−24.8±2.3kJmol−1 and Δsub H 357°(BH3NH3)=76.3±3.0kJmol−1. Solid products after sublimation and decomposition have been characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy; gaseous forms were studied by mass spectrometry. Activation energy of 94±11kJmol−1 for the process (1) in range 327–351K was determined by static tensimetry method. Based on the analysis of available thermodynamic characteristics, new values for the standard formation enthalpy of solid AB −133.4±5.2kJmol−1 and polyamidoborane −156.7±5.8kJmol−1 are recommended.

Abstract:Ammonia borane (AB) has attracted tremendous interest for on‐board hydrogen storage due to its low molecular weight and high gravimetric hydrogen capacity below a moderate temperature. However, the slow kinetics, irreversibility, and formation of volatile materials (trace borazine and ammonia) limit its practical application. In this paper, a new catalytic strategy involved lithium (Li) catalysis and nanostructure confinement in mesoporous carbon (CMK‐3) for the thermal decomposition of AB is developed. AB loaded on the 5% Li/CMK‐3 framework releases ∼7 wt % of hydrogen at a very low temperature (around 60 °C) and entirely suppresses borazine and ammonia emissions that are harmful for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The possible mechanism for enhanced hydrogen release via catalyzed thermal decomposition of AB is discussed.
Facile Solid-Phase Synthesis of the Diammoniate of Diborane and Its Thermal Decomposition Behavior

Abstract:The recent mechanistic finding of the hydrogen release pathways from ammonia borane (AB) has sparked new interest in the chemistry and properties of the diammoniate of diborane (DADB), an ionic isomer of AB. We herein report a facile one-step solid-phase synthesis route of DADB using inexpensive starting materials. Our study found that mechanically milling a 1 : 1 NaBH(4)/NH(4)F powder mixture causes the formation of crystalline DADB via a NH(4)BH(4) intermediate. The produced DADB can be readily separated from the sodium fluoride (NaF) by-product by a purification procedure using liquid ammonia at -78 degrees C. The thermal decomposition behavior of DADB was studied using synchronous thermal analyses, particularly in comparison with AB. It was found that the decomposition steps and products of DADB are similar to those of AB. But meanwhile, DADB exhibits a series of advantages over AB that merit its potential hydrogen storage application, such as lower dehydrogenation temperature, free of foaming and lack of an induction period in the thermal decomposition process. Our study further found that the volatile non-hydrogen products from DADB can be effectively suppressed by milling with MgH(2).
Hydrogen evolution reaction of ammonium borane at bimetal atoms supported by porous g-C 3 N 4 surface: Mechanistic insights from theoretical studies

Abstract:In this study, we employ density functional theory (DFT) to explore the structural properties of g-C 3 N 4 and its bimetallic modified catalysts by introducing the bimetallic atoms (Rh@Pt, Ru@Pd, Pd@Pt, Ru@Pt, Ph@Pd) to the g-C 3 N 4 surface. In addition, we explore three potential reaction pathways catalyzed by these six catalysts for the dehydrogenation reaction of ammonia borane. We find the optimal reaction pathway by comparing the activation energy of the rate-limiting steps in several reaction paths. Our findings demonstrate that bimetal Rh@Pt, Ru@Pd, Pd@Pt, Ru@Pt, Ph@Pd supported by g-C 3 N 4 can enhance catalytic activity of ammonia borane hydrogen evolution. We also investigate the reasons contributing to the improved catalytic activity of these five modified catalysts and find that Rh@Pt supported by g-C 3 N 4 exhibits the best catalytic performance. Additionally, we study the band structure and density of states (DOS) of six catalysts and observe an increased degree of metallicity in the modified catalysts. Overall, we establish the correlation between the reaction activities of ammonia borane hydrogen evolution and the physical properties of the catalysts. This work is intended to provide a theoretical basis for optimizing catalysts for the dehydrogenation reaction of ammonia borane.

Abstract:The dynamic mechanisms involved in the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane are investigated using quasi-classical trajectory simulations. The effects of solvent and nuclear motion yield qualitatively different results compared to simulations where these considerations are neglected. Not only are rate-limited barriers substantially different from the gas to solvent phase, trajectories leading from transition states branch to different products depending on the presence or lack of solvent. In addition the formation of the diammoniate of diborane is shown to be noncompetitive in the gas phase due to the presence of lower-barrier dehydrogenation pathway. The first comparative analysis of the pathways leading to the thermolysis of ammonia-borane is presented herein.

Abstract:The heat effect of ammonia borane decomposition at 357 K under atmospheric pressure in glass and copper cells has been determined by calorimetry. The enthalpy of BH3NH3 heat-induced decomposition in glass ampoules is of–24.8±2.3 kJ/mol; this value includes the structural reorganization into diammoniate of diborane of–4.0±2.8 kJ/mol and the thermal effect of decomposition into polyamidoborane of–20.8±1.6 kJ/mol. In the case of experiments in copper cells a much higher (–47.6±8.3 kJ/mol) heat evolution is observed. The solidstate 15N and 11B NMR analysis of samples after the calorimetric experiment has shown that partial oxidation of the sample into boric acid occurs in copper cells.

Abstract:This paper introduces a confinement approach to enhance solid-state hydrogen storage by designing a nano-tubular and nano-fibrous structured boron-based storage medium. We detail the preparation of the confinement matrix, emphasizing its nanotubular and microfibrous structures provided by activated halloysite and sepiolite clays to achieve suitable confinement for ammonia borane (NH3BH3, AB). The thermolysis characteristics are thoroughly investigated in a lab-scale hydrogen reactor, elucidating the activation effects (thermal, acid, and both thermal-acid) on confinement and hydrogen generation performance. The resulting composite exhibits improved thermal stability and controlled hydrogen desorption characteristics, offering great promise for safe and efficient hydrogen storage applications. This research underscores the potential of tailored nanomaterials in advancing hydrogen storage technologies, with significant implications for clean energy solutions and the sustainable transportation sector. AB confined in acid-activated nano-tubular clay has shown improved hydrogen generation features at 120 °C, resulting in the highest improvement in H2 equivalent per AB mole (98 %) and the initial hydrogen generation rate (233 %) while minimizing induction time up to 90 %.
