Abstract:In recent years, significant breakthroughs have been made in the exploration of deep to ultra-deep oil and gas reserves onshore in China. These conventional deep to ultra-deep reservoirs are typically buried at depths exceeding 4500 m, with bottom-hole temperatures surpassing 150 °C. The high temperatures at the bottom of the well are more likely to cause deterioration in drilling fluid properties, altering its rheological properties and reducing cutting transport efficiency, which can lead to wellbore cleaning issues. In this paper, the numerical simulation method is used to analyze the influence of cutting particle size, drilling fluid flow rate, drill pipe rotation speed, and drill pipe eccentricity on the annular cutting concentration under different wellbore drilling fluid temperature conditions. The results show that at the same cutting particle size, as the drilling fluid temperature increases, the cutting concentration in the annulus increases sharply. The increase is the largest when the particle size is 3 mm, and when the drilling fluid temperature is 220 °C, the cutting concentration increases by 79.7% compared to at 200 °C and by 279% compared to at 180 °C. When the flow rate increases from 0.5 m/s to 1.0 m/s, the annular cutting concentration at drilling fluid temperatures of 220 °C and 200 °C decreases by 70.5% and 50.4%, respectively. The higher the drilling fluid temperature, the better the cutting removal effect when increasing the drill pipe rotation speed. However, when the rotation speed exceeds 120 rpm, the change in cutting concentration with increasing rotation speed becomes insignificant. When the drill pipe eccentricity is small, an increase in drilling fluid temperature leads to a significant rise in annular cutting concentration. However, when the drill pipe eccentricity is large, changes in drilling fluid temperature have a smaller impact on cutting concentration. The research findings can provide engineering guidance and theoretical support for the design of drilling fluid hydraulic parameters for cutting transport and rheological parameters in high-temperature wellbores.

Energy Sources Part A Recovery Utilization and Environmental Effects

Abstract:The shale gas resources found in deep formations are abundant and represent a crucial area for current and future shale gas development. However, as shale gas exploration and development intensify in China, an increasing number of high-temperature formations are being encountered during drilling, presenting significant challenges to drilling engineering and severely constraining the development of deep shale gas exploration. In this study, the stability of PCM (phase change material) combined with drilling fluid as a coolant was discussed, and the influence of PCM on wellbore temperature field in drilling fluid was considered. A calculation model of temperature field of drilling fluid containing PCM was established, the cooling characteristics of PCM under the influence of different parameters were simulated, and the cooling effect of PCM integrated with drilling fluid on ultra-deep and high-temperature Wells was analyzed. The investigated PCM has a phase change temperature range of 120 ~ 130°C and a latent heat of 264.15 ~ 265.53 kJ/kg. Our results showed that the cooling impact of PCM exhibits an upward trend as the quantity of PCM utilized increases. Assuming the drilling temperature limit is 135°C, after adding 5% PCM to the drilling fluid, the drilling length of the horizontal section increased by approximately 500 m. With 15% PCM added, the horizontal section could be extended by about 1000 m. We conducted a simulation analysis on a well in southern Sichuan, and found that adding 12% PCM had the best cooling effect, reducing the bottom hole temperature by 12.3°C and extending the horizontal section by 700 m. Compared with conventional drilling fluid cooling methods, incorporating PCM as cooling agents within the drilling fluids provided better cooling effects. It effectively addressed the problem of excessive bottom-hole temperatures in deep wells, extended the drilling length of horizontal sections, and prolonged the service life of downhole instruments. Our research lays the groundwork for the future investigation of cooling techniques for high-temperature deep well drilling fluids.

Abstract:Abstract The introduction of low-temperature fluid into boreholes drilled in ice sheets helps to remove drilling cuttings and to prevent borehole closure through visco-plastic deformation. Only special fluids, or mixtures of fluids, can satisfy the very strict criteria for deep drilling in cold ice. The effects of drilling fluid on the natural environment are analyzed from the following points of view: (1) occupational safety and health; (2) ozone depletion and global warming; (3) chemical pollution; and (4) biological pollution. Traditional low-temperature drilling fluids (kerosene-based fluids with density additives, ethanol and n-butyl acetate) cannot be qualified as intelligent choices from the safety, environmental and technological standpoints. This paper introduces a new type of low-temperature drilling fluid composed of synthetic ESTISOLTM esters, which are non-hazardous substances. ESTISOLTM 140 mixtures with ESTISOLTM 165 or ESTISOLTM F2887 have an acceptable density and viscosity at low temperature. To avoid the potential for biological contamination of the subglacial environment, the borehole drilling fluid should be treated carefully on the surface.

Abstract:This paper proposes a model for determining deformation in the upper 50% of an ice borehole. Based on this model, the borehole deformation of DK-1 at Dome A was studied. Furthermore, the effects of surface temperature, temperature gradient, surface snow density, and drilling fluid density on borehole deformation were investigated. The results showed that borehole shrinking, expansion, and mixed existence occurred simultaneously in DK-1. Borehole deformation increased with increasing surface temperature, while temperature gradient had a minimal effect. Borehole deformation also increased with increasing surface snow density and decreasing drilling fluid density when the borehole shrank; however, the situation was reversed when the borehole expanded. The influence of ice temperature was dominant in deformation. However, when depth exceeded 1200 m, the sensitivity of ice borehole deformation in the direction of the minimum principal stress increased with an increase in drilling fluid density. This study provides meaningful guidance for polar-drilling engineering.

Abstract:High-strength carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have become popular materials to be utilized in the aerospace and automotive industries, due to their unique and superior mechanical properties. An understanding of cutting temperatures is rather important when dealing with high-strength CFRPs, since machining defects are likely to occur because of high temperatures (especially in the semi-closed drilling process). The friction behavior at the flank tool-workpiece interface when drilling CFRPs plays a vital role in the heat generation, which still remains poorly understood. The aim of this paper is to address the friction-induced heat based on two specially-designed tribometers to simulate different sliding velocities, similar to those occurring along the flank tool-work interface in drilling. The elastic recovery effect during the drilling process was considered during the tribo-drilling experiments. The drilling temperatures were calculated by the analytical model and verified by the in-situ experimental results gained using the embedded thermocouples into the drills. The results indicate that the magnitudes of the interfacial friction coefficients between the cemented carbide tool and the CFRP specimen are within the range between 0.135⁻0.168 under the examined conditions. Additionally, the friction caused by the plastic deformation and elastic recovery effects plays a dominant role when the sliding velocity increases. The findings in this paper point out the impact of the friction-induced heat and cutting parameters on the overall drilling temperature.
A Locally Boron-Doped Diamond Tool for Self-Sensing of Cutting Temperature: Lower Thermal Capacity and Broader Applications

Abstract:Accurately measuring the cutting temperature in micro cutting zone is crucial for characterizing and optimizing the cutting status during ultra-precision machining. This work proposes an innovative method for self-sensing of cutting temperature using a locally boron-doped diamond tool. A longitudinal layered deposition synthesis methodology, instead of the traditional growth method under high temperature and high pressure conditions (HTHP), was developed to enable the fabrication of the locally boron-doped diamond tool. The doping contents, lattice integrity, and electrical properties of the diamond were characterized. Owing to the inherently low thermal capacity and quick carrier migration induced by the thin-layer structure for sensing temperature, the diamond tool has the advantages of rapid response and enhanced sensitivity, compared with traditional cutting temperature measurement technologies. An insulated diamond tool edge without boron doping enables to accurately measure cutting temperature for various conductive materials in ultra-precision cutting processes. The locally boron-doped diamond tool was employed for in-process monitoring of the temperature in micro cutting zone during ultra-precision machining processes. The experimental results demonstrated the capabilities of in-process cutting temperature monitoring of conductive materials using the diamond tool, as well as the high-sensitivity identification of micro/nano morphologies and defects on machined surface based on the measured temperature. It provides a potential approach for advanced status analysis and diagnosis in the process of ultra-precision machining.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the experimental parameters of polar permafrost formation, the mathematical module, solid mechanics module, and Darcy's law module of COMSOL Multiphysics software are used to realize the coupled solution of partial differential equations of temperature field, moisture field, and stress field considering the ice-water phase transition and moisture convection, and the relationship between the permafrost moisture convection and temperature change is analyzed by using the heat-flow-solid-moisture mutual coupling, which reveals that The law of action of low-temperature intrusion into rock formation by polar drilling.

Abstract:As oil and gas exploration extends into ultra-deep land and sea environments, developing accurate and efficient hydraulic computation models is essential for improving safe and effective drilling techniques. This paper presents a non-isothermal transient hydraulic computational model developed in MATLAB, which integrates the wellbore temperature and flow fields to simulate temperature, pressure, and phase distributions during gas-liquid-solid three-phase flow in deep wells with large annular ratios. Through example calculations, we examine the effects of the annular ratio and convective heat transfer coefficient on wellbore flow. Results indicate that increasing the annular ratio decreases bottom-hole temperature and pressure; specifically, increasing the annular ratio from 1.5 to 3.5 results in approximately a 10% reduction in pressure and a temperature drop of over 50 K. Additionally, when considering convective heat transfer in the drilling fluid, wellbore temperature increases gradually with depth, peaking at about 1/8 of the total well depth. These findings provide theoretical guidance for designing drilling programs and selecting well control strategies for ultra-deep wells.

Abstract:In the assembly process of aerospace parts, drilling is essential for carbon fiber-reinforced materials. However, due to the extreme thermal sensitivity of these composites, continuous drilling often leads to irreparable defects such as hole wall burns and exit delamination caused by concentrated cutting heat, resulting in the scrapping of parts. To address this issue, this paper explores the impact of temperature characteristics on drilling quality, providing guidance for optimizing the composite drilling process. A simulation model for single and continuous drilling was established to analyze the temperature distribution on the tool surface during drilling. A drilling temperature measurement system based on thin-film thermocouple technology was developed, enabling real-time online temperature monitoring. Continuous drilling experiments were conducted, analyzing the correlation between maximum drilling temperature and hole quality. Results show that temperatures from −25.75 °C to −9.75 °C and from 182 °C to 200.75 °C cause significant exit damage, while optimal hole quality is achieved between −1.25 °C and 168 °C.

Abstract:When drilling into subglacial bedrock, drill operators commonly encounter basal ice containing high concentrations of rock debris and melt water. As such conditions can easily damage conventional ice drills, researchers have experimented with carbide, diamond, and polycrystalline diamond compact drill bits, with varying degrees of success. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between drilling speed and power consumption for a carbide drill bit penetrating debris-rich ice. We also assessed drill load, rotation speed, and various performance parameters for the cutting element, as well as the physical and mechanical properties of rock and ice, to construct mathematical models. We show that our modeled results are in close agreement with the experimental data, and that both penetration speed and power consumption are positively correlated with drill speed and load. When used in ice with 30% rock content, the maximum penetration speed of the carbide bit is 3.4 mm/s with a power consumption of <= 0.5 kW, making the bit suitable for use with existing electromechanical drills. Abstract:The excessive working temperature of the TBM disc cutter is one of the problems that cannot be ignored in tunnel construction. The high temperature will accelerate the disc cutter ring wear, shorten its service life and increase construction costs. Predicting its working temperature to guide the selection of suitable excavation parameters and provide cooling methods suggestions under different geological conditions can extend the excavation distance and improve efficiency. In this study, the finite element model was used to study the thermal behavior of the disc cutter from the two aspects of heating and heat dissipation. The simulation results showed that the temperature change with the excavation parameters. The maximum temperature of the disc cutter under water cooling is 81.0% lower than without cooling. The results of the orthogonal analysis showed that the cutting depth and cutterhead rotation speed had the most significant effect on temperature. According to the experiment of the similar cutter, the maximum difference between the simulation and the experiment is 18.5%. The accuracy of the simulation results was verified.

Abstract:In the freeze coring process, the core tube is subjected to cutting heat, frictional heat with the coal wall, and refrigerant action, which causes the temperature of the coal core to be different at different positions and at different times. The equivalent average temperature is proposed to represent the change law of the whole temperature of the coal core and to provide the temperature boundary condition for calculating gas loss. Relying on the self-developed simulation platform for the freezing response characteristics of gas-containing coal, a temperature change simulation test of the freezing core under different external heat conditions was carried out, and the freezing core heat transfer model was constructed with the help of COMSOL to analyze the coal core radial temperature changes during the freeze coring process. Because the drilling sampling time of the freeze coring process is short and there is a thermal isolation device between the drill bit and the core tube, the influence of cutting heat is ignored when the model is established, and only the coal core diameter is studied. The results show that the law of equivalent average temperature of the coal core with time is consistent with the experimental law, which is divided into three stages: rapid decline, slow decline, and relative stability. The temperature drop amplitude and rate of the equivalent average temperature of the coal core decrease with increasing external heat temperature. For example, when the external temperature is 60, 70, 80, and 90 °C, the limit temperatures of the equivalent average temperature of the coal core are -36.301, -30.358, -23.956, and -18.899 °C, respectively.

Abstract:The ultra-high temperature characteristics of ultra-deep formation pose a serious threat to the safety and efficiency of drilling. In this paper, we proposed a novel method of dual-channel drillpipe for drilling ultra-deep formation. A transient heat transfer model of dual-channel drillpipe drilling was established considering the different heat transfer mechanisms of different regions, combined with technological characteristics of dual-channel drillpipe drilling as well as the variable mass flow of fluid at the dual-channel valve. The validity of the model has been indirectly verified by the measured temperatures of a real case. Numerical simulation results showed that, compared with conventional drilling method, the dual-channel drillpipe drilling could reduce the bottom hole pressure to lower extent and reached a stable state in shorter time. Meanwhile, the insulation effect of the auxiliary fluid could slow down the reduction in the temperature of injected drilling fluid and the increase in the temperature of the returned fluid above the dual-channel valve. Furthermore, the formation transferred less heat to the wellbore than conventional drilling. Therefore, dual-channel drillpipe drilling has the potential to become an effective method for drilling in ultra-deep formation at ultra-high temperature.

In order to improve the drilling performance of polycrystalline diamond compact bit and prolong its service life during drilling in coal rock under the action of wind cycle, the theoretical calculation model of polycrystalline diamond compact bit cutting teeth temperature was derived based on the theory of tribology and heat transfer. The theoretical temperature field of polycrystalline diamond compact bit-cutting teeth was analyzed. Using the joint simulation of EDEM–FLUENT, the temperature variation law of polycrystalline diamond compact bit cutting teeth under the thermo-fluid–solid coupling was analyzed to verify the validity of the theoretical calculation model of polycrystalline diamond compact bit cutting teeth temperature. By building a rotary drilling test platform and conducting drilling experiments on polycrystalline diamond compact bit under different drilling parameters respectively, the correctness of the theoretical model and the simulation data were verified. In addition, a response surface analysis model was established to study the influence of different drilling parameters on the polycrystalline diamond compact bit cutting teeth temperature during drilling in coal rock. The analysis results show that the influence degree of various drilling parameters on the polycrystalline diamond compact bit cutting teeth temperature from large to small is drilling pressure, drilling speed, coal rock properties, and wind speed. Compared with the working condition without wind cycle, the drilling efficiency of polycrystalline diamond compact bit can be increased by 14.38% and the temperature is reduced by 8% when it drills in coal. The drilling efficiency of polycrystalline diamond compact bit can be increased by 17.79% and the temperature is reduced by 10.5% when it drills in coal gangue.

Abstract:To address the two critical issues of evaluating the necessity of implementing cooling techniques and achieving real-time temperature control of drilling fluids underground in the current drilling fluid cooling technology, we first established a temperature and pressure coupled downhole heat transfer model, which can be used in both water-based and oil-based drilling fluid. Then, fourteen factors, which could affect wellbore temperature, were analyzed. Based on the standard deviation of the downhole temperature corresponding to each influencing factor, the influence of each factor was quantified. The influencing factors that can be used to guide the drilling fluid's cooling technology were drilling fluid thermal conductivity, drilling fluid heat capacity, drilling fluid density, drill strings rotation speed, pump rate, viscosity, ROP, and injection temperature. The nondominated sorting genetic algorithm was used to optimize these six parameters, but the optimization process took 182 min. Combining these eight parameters' influence rules with the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm can reduce the optimization time to 108 s. Theoretically, the downhole temperature has been demonstrated to increase with the inlet temperature increasing linearly under quasi-steady states. Combining this law and PID, the downhole temperature can be controlled, which can reduce the energy for cooling the surface drilling fluid and can ensure the downhole temperature reaches the set value as soon as possible.

Abstract:Summary In deep well drilling, rock breaking has some problems, such as low rock breaking efficiency, serious thermal wear of cutters, short service life, and high cost. It is noticed that the application of CO2 drilling fluid in the oil and gas underbalanced drilling is an efficient approach to achieve the reduction of CO2 emissions. Thus, based on the rock-breaking advantages of CO2 jetting, a new rock-breaking method of combing high-pressure CO2 jet and polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) is proposed in our study. The cooling mechanism and influencing during rock breaking by using the high-pressure CO2 jet-PDC are conducted. With the test system during composite rock breaking of the high-pressure CO2 jet-PDC, the composite rock-breaking experiment of the high-pressure CO2 jet-PDC was carried out. In the experiment, the comparison of the CO2 jet, N2 jet, water jet, and without a jet was conducted and analyzed. And based on the numerical simulation analysis, the intense cooling mechanism was expounded. In the process during composite rock breaking of the high-pressure CO2 jet-PDC, the intense cooling mechanism was mainly attributed to three main reasons: the thermal effect of the jet flow, the expansion endothermic effect of the jetted flow, and the phase transformation cooling effect of the CO2 jet. The effects of rock samples, jet temperatures, jet flow pressures, and rock temperatures on the cutting temperature were experimentally explored, and finally, the intense cooling rules of composite rock breaking were obtained. The experimental results showed that the CO2 jet had a stronger cooling effect on granite than that of the sandstone. In a certain range, jet pressure was positively correlated with the cutting temperature, whereas jet temperature and heating time were negatively correlated with cutting temperature. The study provides the theoretical support for the CO2 application as a drilling medium in underbalanced drilling.

Abstract:Drilling fluid is the blood of drilling engineering. In the polar drilling process, the ultra-low temperature environment puts high demands on the rheological performance of drilling fluids. In this paper, the effects of temperature, ice debris concentration and weighting agent on the rheological properties of drilling fluids were studied. It was found that the lower the temperature and the higher the ice debris concentration, the higher the drilling fluid viscosity, but when the ice debris concentration was below 2%, the drilling fluid rheology hardly changed. Secondly, the low temperature rheological properties of drilling fluid were adjusted by three different methods: base fluid ratio, organoclay, and polymers (dimer acid, polymethacrylate, ethylene propylene copolymer, and vinyl resin). The results showed that the base fluid rheological performance was optimal when the base fluid ratio was 7:3. Compared with polymers, organoclay has the most significant improvement on the low temperature rheological performance of drilling fluid. The main reason is that organoclay can transform the drilling fluid from Newtonian to non-Newtonian fluid, which exhibits excellent shear dilution of drilling fluid. The organoclay is also more uniformly dispersed in the oil, forming a denser weak gel mesh structure, so it is more effective in improving the cuttings carrying and suspension properties of drilling fluids. However, the drilling fluid containing polymer additives is still a Newtonian fluid, which cannot form a strong mesh structure at ultra-low temperatures, and thus cannot effectively improve the low-temperature rheological performance of drilling fluid. In addition, when the amount of organoclay is 2%, the improvement rate of the yield point reaches 250% at −55 °C, which can effectively improve the cuttings carrying and suspension performance of drilling fluid at ultra-low temperature.

Abstract:Measurement while drilling (MWD) plays an important role in controlling well trajectory, improving drilling efficiency and saving drilling cost. In recent years, a large number of high-temperature wells have appeared, which makes the traditional MWD instruments no longer applicable. So far, no active cooling method has been successfully applied to MWD instruments for high-temperature oil and gas wells. This paper presents a new active cooling method for air drilling by utilizing the throttling and cooling of drilling gas, and the cooling system is designed. An axisymmetric numerical model of internal fluid is established, and different drilling gas flow channel design methods are discussed. The research results indicate that the wall temperature of the cooling section is much higher than the center fluid temperature, but lower than the ambient temperature, and can be used for active cooling of downhole drilling instruments. Compared with other design methods, the supersonic nozzle designed using the Bezier method has better parallelism of the gas in cooling section. The diffusion capability of straight wall diffuser is better than that of curved wall diffuser, and it can withstand greater back pressure. For straight wall diffuser, increasing the throat length and reducing the contraction and expansion angle can improve the diffusion capacity, but they also lead to a longer diffuser.

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed thermal simulation analysis of the drilling process for icy soil in the lunar polar region. The aim is to investigate the temperature changes that occur in the debris removal area during the drilling process. We developed a multi-level particle size simulation model that includes a thermal sieve based on geometric constraints to evaluate the influence of specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity on particle temperature. Using the central composite design method, we carried out the simulation test design and analyzed the average temperature difference of particles within and outside the range of the thermal sieve. The parameters of the discrete element model were determined by comparing the temperature of the debris removal zone in the lunar environment with the temperature simulated by the discrete element method. The results show that the thermal conductivity of the sieve ranges from 100 to 400 W/m, and the average temperature inside the thermal sieve is negatively related to the specific heat capacity. The temperature deviation of the chip removal area is ±10 °C, which is consistent with the temperature deviation observed in the lunar environment and the lunar icy regolith drilling test. Furthermore, the addition of the thermal sieve to the multi-stage particle size simulation modeling significantly reduces the calculation time by 86%. This reduction in computational time may potentially increase the efficiency of drilling operations in the future. Our study provides insights into the thermal behavior of lunar icy regolith during drilling, and proposes a numerical model of heat transfer with a thermal sieve that can effectively reduce computational time while ensuring accurate temperature calculations.

Abstract:The deep strata in the Ordos Basin exhibit characteristics of high temperature and high stress. Conventional methods for assessing drillability (normal temperature and pressure) fail to accurately understand the drilling resistance characteristics of deep rocks in this region, leading to improper guidance for selecting formation drilling tools and prolonging drilling cycles. This study employs physical experiments and numerical simulations to conduct drillability tests on core samples taken from the region under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, simultaneously simulating the rock breaking process under different temperature and pressure conditions. The study investigates the variation patterns of rock drillability grade values and von Mises stress values during rock breaking under single-factor and multi-factor analyses of temperature and pressure conditions. Combining these variation patterns, an optimization analysis of the back rake angle of PDC drill bits used in drillability experiments is conducted to guide the selection of drill bits on site. The results indicate that the variation patterns of von Mises values from finite element simulations are consistent with the drillability grade values under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. Under single-factor conditions, von Mises stress and drillability grade values generally increase with rising temperature before decreasing, while they increase with increasing confining pressure. Under multi-factor conditions, confining pressure is the primary influencing factor within the range of 0 to 50 MPa, while the influence of temperature becomes prominent between 180 °C to 200 °C, with a weakening effect of confining pressure. Model application: Selecting a back rake angle of 30° for PDC drill bits yields optimal rock-breaking results. The research findings hold significant implications for understanding the low rock-breaking efficiency of deep strata, optimizing drill bit parameters, and enhancing drilling efficiency.
