Abstract:Tailoring the morphology and composition of Pt-based nanostructures is crucial to design high-performance electrocatalysts for direct methanol fuel cells. In this work, we propose a facile strategy to fabricate one-dimensional PtM (M = Co, Ni) mesoporous nanotubes (PtM MNTs), in which F127 and Te nanowires facilitate the formation of mesoporous exteriors and cannular interiors, respectively. Owing to the structural advantages of bimetallic mesoporous nanotube architectonics, the PtM MNTs exhibit superior electrochemical performance for the oxygen reduction reaction and methanol oxidation reaction. The proposed dual-template strategy is highly promising for designing active Pt-based mesoporous nanotubes with desired composition toward various electrocatalytic fields.

Abstract:Tailoring the morphology and composition of platinum-based electrocatalysts is of significant importance for the development of highly efficient direct methanol fuel cells. Herein, we report a dual-templating method for the design of hollow PtPd nanorods with mesoporous shells (mPtPd HNRs). We found that F127 micelles favored the formation of mesoporous structures and that SiO2 nanorods served as a hard template for the creation of cavities. The well-developed mesopores, hollow structures, and bimetallic composition of the mPtPd HNRs afforded a sufficient number of active sites to facilitate the electrochemical oxidation of methanol, thereby leading to enhanced activity and stability. This strategy allowed for the reliable preparation of mesoporous hollow platinum-based electrocatalysts with desired compositions and morphologies for catalytic applications.

Abstract:For most core-shell nanostructured Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts, the local environment and configuration of surface Pt layers are randomly generated, which would hinder the further improvement of the utilization, activity and stability of Pt atoms. Herein, we have selected AuCu alloys with different structural ordering as substrates and deposited a Pt shell on their surface via the precise control of replacing Cu with Pt atoms. Various physical and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the structural ordering of an AuCu core could influence the distribution of surface Pt atoms due to the rearrangement of surface atoms. After optimization, the obtained catalysts displayed a high mass activity (0.75 Amg(Pt)(-1)) and specific activity (0.491 mAcm(Pt)(-2)) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which were nearly 7.5 times and 3.6 times those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. In addition, the catalysts could also exhibit a high stability with a negligible activity decay after 10,000 cycles of accelerated durability tests (ADTs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the precisely controlled Pt local environment could lower the Gibbs free energy barrier for the rate-determining step of ORR more than a random distribution could, thus enhancing the catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts.

Abstract:Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au50Pd50, Au60Pd40 and Au-66 Pd-34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au66Pd34@Pt, Au60Pd40@Pt and Au50Pd50@Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au75Pd25@Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au-60 Pd-40@Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C. Abstract:Bimetallic nanocrystals with a branched shape have received great interest as catalysts due to their unique structures and fascinating properties. However, the conventional synthetic approaches based on the island growth mode often lead to the dendritic nanostructures with inhomogeneous and uncontrolled branches. Here precise control over the number of branches has been realized in the deposition of Pt on Pd seeds through the Stranski-Krastanov growth mechanism. Based on such a growth mode, Pd@Pt core-shell hexapods and octapods have been generated by a seeded growth with Pd octahedra and cubes as the seeds, respectively. We found that Pt atoms are initially deposited on the side faces of Pd seeds through a layer-by-layer epitaxial growth in the presence of oleylamine (OAm), leading to a local strain focused at their corners. These strain-concentrated sites promote the subsequent island growth of Pt atoms at the corners of the Pd seeds, resulting in the Pd@Pt core-shell hexapods or octapods. Both the Pd@Pt core-shell hexapods and octapods exhibit the substantially enhanced catalytic properties in terms of activity and stability towards a methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) relative to the commercial Pt/C. Specifically, the Pd@Pt core-shell hexapods show the highest specific (1.97 mA cm(-2)) activity and mass activity (0.52 mA mu g(Pt)(-1\)) for the MOR, which are 5.8 and 2.6 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C, respectively. This enhancement can probably be attributed to their unique structures and the synergistic effect between Pt and Pd.

Abstract:Alloyed nanoparticles with core-shell structures provide a favorable model to modulate interfacial interaction and surface structures at the atomic level, which is important for designing electrocatalysts with high activity and durability. Herein, core-shell structured Pd3M@Pt/C nanoparticles with binary PdM alloy cores (M = Fe, Ni, and Co) and a monolayer Pt shell were successfully synthesized with diverse interfaces. Among these, Pd3Fe@Pt/C exhibited the best oxygen reduction reaction catalytic performance, roughly 5.4 times more than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst used as reference. The significantly enhanced activity is attributed to the combined effects of strain engineering, interfacial electron transfer, and improved Pt utilization. Density functional theory simulations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis revealed that engineering the alloy core with moderate lattice mismatch and alloy composition (Pd3Fe) optimizes the surface oxygen adsorption energy, thereby rendering excellent electrocatalytic activity. Future researches may use this study as a guide on the construction of highly effective core-shell electrocatalysts for various energy conversions and other applications.

Abstract:To find a low-Pt electrocatalyst that is functionally integrated and superior to the state-of-the-art single-Pt electrocatalyst is expectedly a challenge. We have in this study found that the reactivity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes (viz., four half-cell reactions), can be modified and greatly enhanced by the electronic and/or synergistic effects of a low-Pt octahedral PtCuCo alloy. For the ORR, the mass activity (MA) of Pt0.23Cu0.64Co0.13/C in an acidic or alkaline electrolyte was 14.3 or 10.7 times that of the commercial Pt/C. For the MOR, the MA of Pt0.23Cu0.64Co0.13/C in an acidic or alkaline electrolyte was 7.2 or 3.4 times that of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, Pt0.23Cu0.64Co0.13/C exhibited an increased durability and CO tolerance, as compared with the commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the PtCuCo(111) surface can effectively optimize the O* binding energy. This work has successfully shown an example of how both acidic and alkaline ORR and MOR activities can be significantly synchronously enhanced.
Self-Assembly Intermetallic PtCu3 Core with High-Index Faceted Pt Shell for High-Efficiency Oxygen Reduction.

Abstract:Rational design of well-defined active sites is crucial for promoting sluggish oxygen reduction reactions. Herein, leveraging the surfactant-oriented and solvent-ligand effects, we develop a facile self-assembly strategy to construct a core-shell catalyst comprising a high-index Pt shell encapsulating a PtCu3 intermetallic core with efficient oxygen-reduction performance. Without undergoing a high-temperature route, the ordered PtCu3 is directly fabricated through the accelerated reduction of Cu2+, followed by the deposition of the remaining Pt precursor onto its surface, forming high-index steps oriented by the steric hindrance of surfactant. This approach results in a high half-wave potential of 0.911 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, with negligible deactivation even after 15000-cycle operation. Operando spectroscopies identify that this core-shell catalyst facilitates the conversion of oxygen-involving intermediates and ensures antidissolution ability. Theoretical investigations rationalize that this improvement is attributed to reinforced electronic interactions around high-index Pt, stabilizing the binding strength of rate-determining OHads species.

Abstract:A core-shell structured low-Pt catalyst, PdPt@Pt/C, with high performance towards both methanol anodic oxidation and oxygen cathodic reduction, as well as in a single hydrogen/air fuel cell, is prepared by a novel two-step colloidal approach. For the anodic oxidation of methanol, the catalyst shows three times higher activity than commercial Tanaka 50 wt% Pt/C catalyst; furthermore, the ratio of forward current I-f to backward current I-b is high up to 1.04, whereas for general platinum catalysts the ratio is only ca. 0.70, indicating that this PdPt@Pt/C catalyst has high activity towards methanol anodic oxidation and good tolerance to the intermediates of methanol oxidation. The catalyst is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The core-shell structure of the catalyst is revealed by XRD and TEM, and is also supported by underpotential deposition of hydrogen (UPDH). The high performance of the PdPt@Pt/C catalyst may make it a promising and competitive low-Pt catalyst for hydrogen fueled polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) or direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications. Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of monodisperse core/shell 5/1.5 nm Au/CuPt nanoparticles by coreduction of platinum acetylacetonate and copper acetylacetonate in the presence of 5 nm Au nanoparticles. The CuPt alloy effect and core/shell interactions make these Au/CuPt nanoparticles a promising catalyst for both oxygen reduction reaction and methanol oxidation reaction in 0.1 M HClO4 solution. Their specific (mass) reduction and oxidation activities reach 2.72 mA/cm(2) (1500 mA/mg Pt) at 0.9 V and 0.755 mA/cm(2) (441 mA/mg Pt) at 0.8 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode), respectively. Our studies show that the existence of the Au nanoparticle core not only minimizes the Pt usage but also improves the stability of the Au/CuPt catalyst for fuel cell reactions. The results suggest that the core/shell design is indeed effective for optimizing nanoparticle catalysis. The same concept may be extended to other multimetallic nanoparticle systems, making it possible to tune nanoparticle catalysis for many different chemical reactions.

Abstract:A simple method for the preparation of PdCo@Pd core-shell nanoparticles supported on carbon has been developed using an adsorbate-induced surface segregation effect. The stability and electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction of PdCo@Pd nanoparticles was enhanced by a small amount of Pt, deposited via a spontaneous displacement reaction. The facile method described herein is suitable for large-scale lower cost production and significantly lowers the Pt loading and thus cost. The as-prepared PdCo@Pd and Pd-decorated PdCo@Pd nanocatalysts have higher methanol-tolerance for the ORR when compared to Pt/C, and are promising cathode catalysts for fuel cell applications.

Abstract:Two dimensional (2D), ordered intermetallic and core/shell architectures are highly desirable structural features for promoting electrocatalysis on Pt-based nanocrystals in terms of activity, durability, and cost. However, it is currently an extreme challenge to achieve all these features in a single catalytic nanostructure. Herein, we report a new class of 2D nanoplate catalyst composed of intermetallic hcp-PtBi core and ultrathin fcc-Pt shell synthesized by a facile one-pot wet-chemical approach. The unique structural features of PtBi/Pt core/shell nanoplates make them exhibit the highest oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in all the reported PtBi-based catalytic systems and 5 times more active than commercial Pt/C catalyst for ORR. Abstract:The development of cost-effective Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is crucial for the application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this work, by using density functional theory calculations, we show that the Pt-M@Pt core-shell alloy (M = Co, Ni, Cu, with Pt-M alloy as the pseudo-Pt core and Pt as the shell) gives significantly higher ORR activity than pure Pt and common Pt-M alloys. Through structural and electronic analyses, we suggest that this is mainly caused by the asymmetric strain modulation effect of the pseudo-Pt core on the Pt shell and the interfacial charge transfer, which leads to a significant downward shift of the d-band center (epsilon d) and alters the bonding mode between the metal d orbitals and the adsorbed oxygen (O) p orbitals from equal contributions of the five d orbitals to dominant contributions of d(xy) and d(x2-y2) orbitals, thereby weakening the adsorption strength of O. Notably, the PtCo@Pt(111) surface with a suitable compressive strain and appropriate interfacial charge transfer exhibits the highest ORR activity and the corresponding overpotential is 0.38 V lower than Pt(111).
The facile synthesis of core–shell PtCu nanoparticles with superior electrocatalytic activity and stability in the hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:A series of PtCu bimetallic nanoparticles with different Pt/Cu ratios was synthesized via a facile synthetic strategy to optimize the utilization of Pt atoms. Pt 1 Cu 3 /CB showed excellent HER performance under acidic and alkaline conditions.
