Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove a new and general version of the Morse index theorem for heteroclinic, homoclinic and halfclinic solutions of general Lagrangian systems. In the last section we compute the Morse index of some heteroclinic and halfclinic solutions of some classical mechanical systems like the mathematical pendulum, the Nagumo equation and a competition-diffusion system in dimension 4.

A Morse index formula for periodic brake orbits of reversible mechanical Lagrangian systems

Abstract:It is well-known that fixed energy solutions of a reversible autonomous Lagrangian system are up to time reparametrization geodesics of the Jacobi-Maupertuis metric, which degenerates at the boundary of the Hill's region. In a recent paper, Montgomery proved that geodesics hitting the boundary at a regular point always contain pairs of focal points, and hence in particular cannot be minima of the energy functional. Starting from this, we provide a precise Morse index formula for periodic brake orbits of a reversible autonomous Lagrangian system by computing the local contribution to the Morse index provided at each brake instant. We finally discuss an application to a doubly coupled harmonic oscillator.

Abstract:We compute the Morse index of a critical submanifold of the energy functional on the loop space of a manifold with constant sectional curvature. The case of constant non-positive sectional curvature is a known result and the case of a sphere has been proved by Klingenberg. We adapt Klingenberg's proof of the case of a sphere to the case of constant sectional curvature, to obtain the possible Morse indices of critical submanifolds of the energy functional.

Abstract:We are concerned with Liouville-type theorems for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with on , where . Here, , , and is a positive real parameter. We prove the nonexistence of weak sign-changing solutions which are stable or with finite Morse index, possibly unbounded. The main ideas we use here are integral estimates, a Pohozaev type identity, and a monotonicity formula.

Abstract:The classical theory of attractive central force problem on the standard (flat) Euclidean plane can be generalized to surfaces by reformulating the basic underlying physical principles by means of differential geometry. Attractive central force problems on state manifolds appear quite often and in several different context ranging from nonlinear control theory to mobile robotics, thermodynamics, artificial intelligence, signal transmission and processing and so on. The aim of the present paper is to analyze the variational properties of the circular periodic orbits in the case of attractive power-law potentials of the Riemannian distance on revolution's surfaces. We compute the stability properties and the Morse index by developing a suitable intersection index in the Lagrangian Grassmannian and symplectic context.

Abstract:Under a Morse index condition we prove symmetry results for solutions of a nonlinear mixed boundary condition elliptic problem. As an intermediate step we relate the Morse index of a solution to a mixed boundary condition linear eigenvalue problem for which we construct sequences of eigenvalues and provide variational characterization of them.

Abstract:This is an expository paper devoted to the Morse index of Chaperon's generating families of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. After reviewing the construction of such generating families, we present Bott's iteration theory in this setting: we study how the Morse index of a critical point corresponding to an iterated periodic orbit depends on the order of iteration of the orbit. We also investigate the precise dependence of the Morse index from the choice of the generating family associated to a given Hamiltonian diffeomorphism, which will allow to see the Morse index as a Maslov index for the linearized Hamiltonian flow in the symplectic group. We will conclude the survey with a proof that the classical Morse index from Tonelli Lagrangian dynamics coincides with the Maslov index.

Abstract:We prove stability results of the Morse index plus nullity of Yang-Mills connections in dimension 4 under weak convergence. Precisely we establish that the sum of the Morse indices and the nullity of a bounded sequence of Yang-Mills connections is asymptotically bounded above by the sum of the Morse index and the nullity of the weak limit and the bubbles while the Morse indices are asymptotically bounded below by the sum of the Morse index of the weak limit and the bubbles.

Abstract:For Hill's equations with matrix valued periodic potential, we discuss relations between the Morse index, counting the number of unstable eigenvalues, and the Maslov index, counting the number of signed intersections of a path in the space of Lagrangian planes with a fixed plane. We adapt to the one dimensional periodic setting the strategy of a recent paper by J. Deng and C. Jones relating the Morse and Maslov indices for multidimensional elliptic eigenvalue problems.

Abstract:We give a Morse-theoretic characterization of simple closed geodesics on Riemannian $2$-spheres. On any Riemannian $2$-sphere endowed with a generic metric, we show there exists a simple closed geodesic with Morse index $1$, $2$ and $3$. In particular, for an orientable Riemannian surface we prove strong Morse inequalities for the length functional applied to the space of simple closed curves.

Abstract:In the regularity theory of solutions to elliptic partial differential equations often the concept of stability plays the role of a sufficient condition for smoothness. It is a natural question to ask if this holds true for nonstable but finite Morse index solutions. We provide a negative answer showing the existence of sequences of solutions with radial Morse index equal to 1 for which regularity estimates can not be satisfied.
