Abstract:The aim of this paper is to extend the Morse theory for geodesics to the conical manifolds. We define these manifolds as submanifolds of $\R^n$ with a finite number of conical singularities. To formulate a good Morse theory we must use an appropriate definition of geodesic. The main theorem of this paper claims that, although the energy is nonsmooth, we can find a continuous retraction of its sublevels in absence of critical points. So, we can give a good definition of index for isolated critical values and for isolated critical points. We prove that Morse relations hold and, at last, we give a definition of multiplicity of geodesics which is geometrical meaningful.

Abstract:We compute the Morse index of a critical submanifold of the energy functional on the loop space of a manifold with constant sectional curvature. The case of constant non-positive sectional curvature is a known result and the case of a sphere has been proved by Klingenberg. We adapt Klingenberg's proof of the case of a sphere to the case of constant sectional curvature, to obtain the possible Morse indices of critical submanifolds of the energy functional.

Abstract:We give a Morse-theoretic characterization of simple closed geodesics on Riemannian $2$-spheres. On any Riemannian $2$-sphere endowed with a generic metric, we show there exists a simple closed geodesic with Morse index $1$, $2$ and $3$. In particular, for an orientable Riemannian surface we prove strong Morse inequalities for the length functional applied to the space of simple closed curves.

Abstract:We prove that a free boundary curve shortening flow on closed surfaces with a strictly convex boundary remains noncollapsed for a finite time in the sense of the reflected chord-arc profile introduced by Langford-Zhu. This shows that such flow converges to free boundary embedded geodesic in infinite time, or shrinks to a round half-point on the boundary. As a consequence, we prove the existence of two free boundary embedded geodesics on a Riemannian $2$-disk with a strictly convex boundary. Moreover, we prove that there exists a simple closed geodesic with Morse Index $1$ and $2$. This settles the free boundary analog of Grayson's theorem.

Equivariant Morse index of min-max $G$-invariant minimal hypersurfaces

Abstract:For a closed Riemannian manifold $M^{n+1}$ with a compact Lie group $G$ acting as isometries, the equivariant min-max theory gives the existence and the potential abundance of minimal $G$-invariant hypersurfaces provided $3\leq {\rm codim}(G\cdot p) \leq 7$ for all $p\in M$. In this paper, we show a compactness theorem for these min-max minimal $G$-hypersurfaces and construct a $G$-invariant Jacobi field on the limit. Combining with an equivariant bumpy metrics theorem, we obtain a $C^\infty_G$-generic finiteness result for min-max $G$-hypersurfaces with area uniformly bounded. As a main application, we further generalize the Morse index estimates for min-max minimal hypersurfaces to the equivariant setting. Namely, the closed $G$-invariant minimal hypersurface $\Sigma\subset M$ constructed by the equivariant min-max on a $k$-dimensional homotopy class can be chosen to satisfy ${\rm Index}_G(\Sigma)\leq k$.

Abstract:We prove upper bounds for the Morse index and number of intersections of min-max geodesics achieving the $p$-widths of a closed surface. A key tool in our analysis is a proof that for a generic set of metrics, the tangent cone at any vertex of any finite union of closed immersed geodesics consists of exactly two lines. We also construct examples to demonstrate that multiplicity one does not hold generically in this setting. Specifically, we construct an open set of metrics on $S^2$ for which the $p$-width is only achieved by $p$ copies of a single geodesic.

Abstract:In this note we prove that any minimal $2$-torus in $S^4$ has Morse index at least $6$, with equality if and only if it is congruent to the Clifford torus in some great $S^3\subset S^4$.For a minimal $2$-torus in $S^n$ with vanishing Hopf differential, we show that its index is at least $n+3$, and that this estimate is sharp: the equilateral $2$-torus fully embedded in $S^5\subset S^n$ as a homogeneous minimal surface in $S^n$ has index exactly $n+3$.

Abstract:We prove results for free-boundary hypersurfaces in the upper unit hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}_{+}$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$. First we show that if the norm squared of the second fundamental form is constant, the Morse index of a free-boundary minimal hypersurface $\Sigma\subset \mathbb{S}^{n+1}_{+}$ equals: $1$ if $\Sigma$ is a totally geodesic equator, $n+1$ if $\Sigma$ is half of the Clifford torus, or it is at least $2(n+1)$ when $\Sigma$ is not totally geodesic. Next we prove an estimate for the first eigenvalue $\lambda_1$ of the second variation's Jacobi operator, and show that $\lambda_1 \leq -2n$ if $\Sigma$ is not totally geodesic, with equality iff $\Sigma$ is half of the minimal Clifford torus. Furthermore, $\lambda_1 = -n$ iff $\Sigma$ is totally geodesic. Finally, if $\Sigma$ is not totally umbilical the Morse index is at least $n+1$, with equality precisely when $\Sigma$ is the upper $\mathrm{H}$-torus. For totally umbilical hypersurfaces the Morse index is $1$. We also prove an upper bound for the first eigenvalue of free-boundary $\mathrm{CMC}$ hypersurfaces, where equality corresponds to totally umbilical hypersurfaces.

Abstract:We give a description of the structure of finite Morse index solutions to two free boundary problems in $\mathbb{R}^2$. These free boundary problems are models of phase transition and they are closely related to minimal hypersurfaces. We show that these finite Morse index solutions have finitely many ends and they converge exponentially to these ends at infinity. As an important tool in the proof, a quadratic decay estimate for the curvature of free boundaries is established.

Abstract:Comparing invariants from both topological and geometric perspectives is a key focus in index theorem. This paper compares higher analytic and topological torsions and establishes a version of the higher Cheeger-Müller/Bismut-Zhang theorem. In fact, Bismut-Goette achieved this comparison assuming the existence of fiberwise Morse functions satisfying the fiberwise Thom-Smale transversality condition (TS condition). To fully generalize the theorem, we should remove this assumption. Notably, unlike fiberwise Morse functions, fiberwise generalized Morse functions (GMFs) always exist, we extend Bismut-Goette's setup by considering a fibration $ M \to S $ with a unitarily flat complex bundle $ F \to M $ and a fiberwise GMF $ f $, while retaining the TS condition. Compared to Bismut-Goette's work, handling birth-death points for a generalized Morse function poses a key difficulty. To address this, first, by the work of the author M.P., joint with Zhang and Zhu, we focus on a relative version of the theorem. Here, analytic and topological torsions are normalized by subtracting their corresponding torsions for trivial bundles. Next, using new techniques from by the author J.Y., we excise a small neighborhood around the locus where $f$ has birth-death points. This reduces the problem to Bismut-Goette's settings (or its version with boundaries) via a Witten-type deformation. However, new difficulties arise from very singular critical points during this <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://deformation.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> address these, we extend methods from Bismut-Lebeau, using Agmon estimates for noncompact manifolds developed by Dai and J.Y.

Abstract:In [2], <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://N.Dutertre" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and T. Fukui used Viro's integral calculus to study the topology of stable maps $f:M\rightarrow N$ between two smooth manifolds $M$ and $N$. They also discussed several applications to Morin maps. In particular, in Theorem 6.2 [2], they show an equality relating the Euler characteristic of a compact manifold $M$ and the Euler characteristic of the singular sets of a Morin map defined on $M$. In this paper we show how Morse theory for manifolds with boundary can be applied to the study of the singular sets of a Morin map in order to obtain a new proof of Dutertre-Fukui's Theorem when $N=\mathbb{R}^n$.
