Abstract:In this paper, a new Morse index theory for strongly indefinite functionals was developed via Gălerkin approximation. In particular, the abstract theory is valid for those kinds of strongly indefinite functionals corresponding to wave equation and beam equation.

By using the approximation method of finite element, we show that bounds on solutions of the restriction functional onto finite dimensional subspace are equivalent to bounds on their relative Morse indices. The obtained results can be used to establish a Morse theory for strongly indefinite functionals with superlinearities.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the Morse index theory for strongly indefinite functionals developed in [Nonlinear Anal. TMA, in press], we compute precisely the critical groups at the origin and at infinity, respectively. The abstract theorems are used to study the existence (multiplicity) of nontrivial periodical solutions for asymptotically wave equation and beam equation with resonance both at infinity and at zero.

Abstract:The basic results in Morse theory are the Morse inequalities and the Morse handle body theorem. They are established on the Banach Finsler manifolds or on the Hilbert Riemannian manifolds in Section 4. The tool in this study is the deformation theorem, which is introduced in Section 3. Some preliminaries on algebraic topology and on infinite dimensional manifolds are reviewed in Sections 1 and 2 respectively. Readers who are familiar with the background material may skip over these two sections. Gromoll-Meyer theory on isolated critical points plays an important role in the applications of Morse theory because the nondegeneracy assumption in the handle body theorem might not hold for concrete problems. Section 5 is devoted to introducing Gromoll-Meyer theory systematically and examines the splitting lemma, the homotopy invariance theorem, the shifting theorem, and the Marino Prodi approximation theorem. The rest of the chapter consists of the extensions of the basic results of Morse theory in different directions: in Section 6.1, to the extension to manifolds with boundaries as well as to the functions satisfying certain boundary value conditions, in Section 6.2, to the extension from manifolds to the locally convex closed subsets; and, in Section 7, to functions with symmetry under a compact Lie group action.

Abstract:Reference [1] established an index theory for a class of linear selfadjoint operator equations covering both second order linear Hamiltonian systems and first order linear Hamiltonian systems as special cases. In this paper based upon this index theory we construct a new reduced functional to investigate multiple solutions for asymptotically linear operator equations by Morse theory. The functional is defined on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space, is twice differentiable and has a finite Morse index. Investigating critical points of this functional by Morse theory gives us a unified way to deal with nontrivial solutions of both asymptotically second order Hamiltonian systems and asymptotically first order Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:Furthering the development of Da Lio-Gianocca-Rivière's Morse stability theory (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.03124" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.03124">arXiv:2212.03124</a>) that was first applied to harmonic maps between manifolds and later extended to the case of Willmore immersions (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.04608" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.04608">arXiv:2306.04608</a>-04609), we generalise the method to the case of (intrinsic or extrinsic) biharmonic maps. In the course of the proof, we develop a novel method to prove strong energy quantization (in the space of squared-integrable functions that corresponds to the pre-dual of the Marcinkiewicz space of weakly squared-integrable functions) in a wide class of problems in geometric analysis, which allows us to recover some previous results in a unified fashion.

Abstract:In the study of closed geodesics, Marston Morse developed his theory on the calculus of variations in the large. The Morse inequalities, which link on one hand, the numbers of critical points in various types of a function, and on the other hand, the topological invariants of the underlying manifold, play an important role in Morse theory. Naturally, they provide an estimate for the number of critical points of a function by using the topology of the manifold. Hopefully, this topological method would deal with the existence and the multiplicity of solutions of certain nonlinear differential equations. However, in this theory, the manifold is compact, and the functions are assumed to be C2 and to have only nondegenerate critical points; all of these restrict the applications seriously. In contrast, Leray-Schauder degree theory has become a very useful topological method. In 1946, at the bicentennial conferences of Princeton University, there was much discussion of their contrast. M. Shiffman hoped that the two methods could be brought closer together “so that they may alter and improve each other, and also so that each may fill out the gaps in the scope of the other” [Pr]. Since then, great efforts have been made to extend the Morse theory. We only mention a few names of the pioneers as follows: R. Bott, E. Rothe, R. S. Palais, S. Smale, D. Gromoll, W. Meyer, A. Marino, and G. Prodi.

Abstract:We show that in viscous approximations of functionals defined on Finsler manifolds, it is possible to construct suitable sequences of critical points of these approximations satisfying the expected Morse index bounds as in Lazer-Solimini's theory, together with the entropy condition of Michael Struwe.

Abstract:The classical theory of attractive central force problem on the standard (flat) Euclidean plane can be generalized to surfaces by reformulating the basic underlying physical principles by means of differential geometry. Attractive central force problems on state manifolds appear quite often and in several different context ranging from nonlinear control theory to mobile robotics, thermodynamics, artificial intelligence, signal transmission and processing and so on. The aim of the present paper is to analyze the variational properties of the circular periodic orbits in the case of attractive power-law potentials of the Riemannian distance on revolution's surfaces. We compute the stability properties and the Morse index by developing a suitable intersection index in the Lagrangian Grassmannian and symplectic context.

Abstract:We compute the Morse index of a critical submanifold of the energy functional on the loop space of a manifold with constant sectional curvature. The case of constant non-positive sectional curvature is a known result and the case of a sphere has been proved by Klingenberg. We adapt Klingenberg's proof of the case of a sphere to the case of constant sectional curvature, to obtain the possible Morse indices of critical submanifolds of the energy functional.

Abstract:Under a Morse index condition we prove symmetry results for solutions of a nonlinear mixed boundary condition elliptic problem. As an intermediate step we relate the Morse index of a solution to a mixed boundary condition linear eigenvalue problem for which we construct sequences of eigenvalues and provide variational characterization of them.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce Morse Lie groupoid morphisms and study their main properties. We show that this notion is Morita invariant which gives rise to a well defined notion of Morse function on differentiable stacks. We show a groupoid version of the Morse lemma which is used to describe the topological behavior of the critical subgroupoid levels of a Morse Lie groupoid morphism around its nondegenerate critical orbits. We also prove Morse type inequalities for certain separated differentiable stacks and construct a Morse double complex whose total cohomology is isomorphic to the Bott–Shulman–Stasheff cohomology of the underlying Lie groupoid. We provide several examples and applications.
