Abstract:
Inspired by the promising prospects of in-depth profile control technology in low-permeability reservoirs, a series of experiments were conducted to investigate the compatibility between the profile control agents (PCAs) and the dominant channels, which are the major target of PCAs in low-permeability reservoirs. Three types of frequently used PCAs and three levels of dominant channels represented by their permeabilities were examined. An optimized coreholder was designed to simulate actual field injection. Nanosphere suspension, poly(ethylene glycol) single-phase gel particle (PEG) and cross-linked bulk gel & swelling particle (CBG-SP) were investigated in core flooding experiments. The results revealed that with excellent in-depth mobility, nanosphere was applicable in low- and medium-permeabiliity dominant channels, which represented the small and medium channels. 100 nm nanosphere injected at 0.35 mL/min could achieve a top-notch performance among all PCAs in 50-500mD cores, while 300 nm nanosphere was highly adaptable to medium channels. The plugging rate difference between pressure taps reduced with the increase of injection volume and concentration (IVC). PEG performed well mainly in the medium and large channels, where the pressure at the back section exceeded the front section, indicating a smooth migration into the depth. According to the injectivity tests, the injection rate of nanosphere and PEG is influential in improving its in-depth plugging. The overall plugging performance of CBG-SP was above 80% when the channel permeability was higher than 1300mD. Limited injectivity of PCA makes it more suitable for large-channel blocking near the borehole. Considering the dual-zone permeability differences, systematic criteria were proposed to optimize slug configuration and engineering parameters with the comparison of PCA results. Based on the principle "blocking, controlling and displacing", reference was provided for the PCA screening and parameter selection of field implementation.
