Abstract:Lee model is commonly accepted for modelling the mass transfer processes subject to both evaporation or condensation. However, the mass loss or mass excess always exist due to the mismatch of condensation and evaporation coefficients. Rare study focused on the proper ratio of them in closed systems. In present study, a dynamic correction model (named mass-conservation model) against to the condensation time relaxation coef-ficient is proposed, which can adjust the condensation coefficient in each time step considering the mass con-servation between the initial state and the current state. Three typical closed structures are introduced for model validation in which severe mass loss and temperature prediction deviation are recognized. Result shows that the mass variation calculated by present dynamic correction model is less than 0.5% while the maximum mass loss with other models could reach 48.31%. Meanwhile, the prediction error of the three Cases calculated with the present model is the smallest, with the maximum decrement of 29.73% compared with other models. It is also realized that the insufficient heat release and the mass non-conservation are the key factor resulting in the temperature prediction deviation, which is well solved by present correction model on condensation time relaxation coefficient.

Abstract:Evaporation is a key process in a wide range of industrial applications. To gain a better insight into this process, investigation on the evaporation model is an important aspect. In the present study, it is found that the computation with the Hertz-Knudsen-Schrage model is not easy to converge in the numerical simulation of the evaporation with multicomponent gas. The reason for the divergence is that the Hertz-Knudsen-Schrage model will lead to an improper vapor mass fraction which is much larger than the saturated vapor mass fraction in the iterations. To improve the convergence performance, an improved model for evaporation with multicomponent gas is proposed. In the improved evaporation model, when the predicted vapor density is larger than the saturated vapor density, a strategy that calculates the volumetric mass transfer rate with the difference between the saturated vapor density and the current vapor density will be implemented. As a result, the vapor density is bounded by the saturated values and no improper large vapor mass fraction arises in the iterations. The improved evaporation model shows much better convergence performance. In the case of the present study, the improved evaporation model can converge with the time step of 5×10 −6 s, while the original Hertz-Knudsen-Schrage model cannot converge with the time step of 5×10 −9 s. The improved evaporation model is also compared with the empirical correlations and shows a good agreement.

Abstract:Droplet nucleation and evaporation are ubiquitous in nature and many technological applications, such as phase-change cooling and boiling heat transfer. So far, the description of these phenomena at the molecular scale has posed challenges for modelling with most of the models being implemented on a lattice. Here, we propose an {off-lattice} Monte-Carlo approach combined with a grid that can be used for the investigation of droplet formation and evaporation. We provide the details of the model, its implementation as Python code, and results illustrating its dependence on various parameters. The method can be easily extended for any force-field ({e.g.,} coarse-grained, all-atom models, and external fields, such as gravity and electric field). Thus, we anticipate that the proposed model will offer opportunities for a wide range of studies in various research areas involving droplet formation and evaporation and will also form the basis for further method developments for the molecular modelling of such phenomena.
