Abstract:This paper presents a numerical study on suspensions of monodisperse non-Brownian grains in a Couette flow. The fully resolved coupled smoothed particle hydrodynamics and discrete element method is employed to model the motion of arbitrarily shaped grains in a viscous fluid. The numerical method is benchmarked against its capability in accurately handling grain–fluid hydrodynamics and inter-grain collisions. It is then used to simulate suspension flows of varying particle Reynolds and Bagnold numbers subjected to different shear rates, solid concentrations, and solid-to-fluid density ratios. A special focus is placed on the effect of grain shape with different aspect ratios and convexities on the flow behavior. Both the inertia and the grain shape are found to affect the grain–fluid and inter-grain interactions and uniquely contribute to the overall shear stress and the rheology of the suspension. The local profiles of solid concentration suggest the presence of grain layering near the boundary walls, which becomes more pronounced with higher solid concentration and inertia, and increased non-circularity in grain shape. A further examination of the pair distribution function and average particle rotation reveals a strong correlation between suspension viscosity and grain microstructure and kinematics.
Correction to Doi type models for suspensions

Abstract:Starting from microscopic $N$ particle systems, we study the derivation of Doi type models for suspensions of non-spherical particles in Stokes flows. While Doi models accurately describe the effective evolution of the spatial particle density to the first order in the particle volume fraction, this accuracy fails regarding the evolution of the particle orientations. We rigorously attribute this failure to the singular interaction of the particles via a $-3$-homogeneous kernel. In the situation that the particles are initially distributed according to a stationary ergodic point process, we identify the limit of this singular interaction term. It consists of two parts. The first corresponds to a classical term in Doi type models. The second new term depends on the (microscopic) $2$-point correlation of the point process. By including this term, we provide a modification of the Doi model that is accurate to first order in the particle volume fraction.

Abstract:This work is devoted to the large-scale rheology of suspensions of non-Brownian inertialess rigid particles, possibly self-propelling, suspended in a Stokes flow. Starting from a hydrodynamic model, we derive a semi-dilute mean-field description in form of a Doi-type model, which is given by a 'macroscopic' effective Stokes equation coupled with a 'microscopic' Vlasov equation for the statistical distribution of particle positions and orientations. This accounts for some non-Newtonian effects since the viscosity in the effective Stokes equation depends on the local distribution of particle orientations via Einstein's formula. The main difficulty is the detailed analysis of multibody hydrodynamic interactions between the particles, which we perform by means of a cluster expansion combined with a multipole expansion in a suitable dilute regime.
