Abstract:In this paper, we prove that entropy degeneracy and entropy explosion happen in the flow constructed by Ohno. We also construct a flow which has the only one invariant and ergodic measure supporting at a fixed point. This flow is no entropy explosion.

Abstract:We introduce a concept of measure-theoretic entropy for flows and study its invariance under measure-theoretic equivalences. Invariance properties of the corresponding topological entropy is studied too. We also answer a question posed by Bowen-Walters in [3] concerning the equality between the topological entropy of the time-one map of an expansive flow and the time-one map of its symbolic suspension.

Abstract: Given any $K>0$, we construct two equivalent $C^2$ flows, one of which has positive topological entropy larger than $K$ and admits zero as the exponential growth of periodic orbits, in contrast, the other has zero topological entropy and super-exponential growth of periodic orbits. Moreover we establish a $C^{\infty}$ flow on $\mathbb{S}^2$ with super-exponential growth of periodic orbits, which is also equivalent to another flow with zero exponential growth of periodic orbits. On the other hand, any two dimensional flow has only zero topological entropy.

Abstract:In discrete dynamical systems topological entropy is a topological invariant and a measurement of the complexity of a system. In continuous dynamical systems, in general, topological entropy deflned as usual by the time one map does not work so well in what concerns these aspects. The point is that the natural notion of equivalence in the discrete case is topological conjugacy which preserves time while in the continuous case the natural notion of equivalence is topological equivalence which allow reparametrizations of the orbits. The main issue happens in the case that the system has flxed points and will be our subject here.

Abstract:Motivated by an extension to Gallavotti–Cohen Chaotic Hypothesis, we study local and global existence of a gradient flow of the Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen entropy functional in the space of transitive Anosov maps. For the space of expanding maps on the unit circle, we equip it with a Hilbert manifold structure using a Sobolev norm in the tangent space of the manifold. Under the additional measure-preserving assumption and a slightly modified metric, we show that the gradient flow exists globally and every trajectory of the flow converges to a unique limiting map where the SRB entropy attains the maximal value. In a simple case, we obtain an explicit formula for the flow's ordinary differential equation representation. This gradient flow has close connection to a nonlinear partial differential equation, a gradient-dependent diffusion equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a countable partition $${\cal A}$$ for flows with hyperbolic singularities by introducing a new cross section at each singularity. Such partition forms a Kakutani tower in a neighborhood of the singularity, and turns out to have finite metric entropy for every invariant probability measure. Moreover, each element of $${{\cal A}^\infty}$$ will stay in a scaled tubular neighborhood for arbitrarily long time. This new construction enables us to study entropy theory for singular flows away from homoclinic tangencies, and show that the entropy function is upper semi-continuous with respect to both invariant measures and the flows, provided that the limiting measure satisfies μ(Sing(X)) = 0.

Abstract:Katok [Lyapunov exponents, entropy and periodic points of diffeomorphisms. Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 51 (1980), 137–173] conjectured that every $C^{2}$ diffeomorphism f on a Riemannian manifold has the intermediate entropy property, that is, for any constant $c \in [0, h_{\mathrm {top}}(f))$ , there exists an ergodic measure $\mu $ of f satisfying $h_{\mu }(f)=c$ . In this paper, we obtain a conditional intermediate metric entropy property and two conditional intermediate Birkhoff average properties for basic sets of flows that characterize the refined roles of ergodic measures in the invariant ones. In this process, we establish a ‘multi-horseshoe’ entropy-dense property and use it to get the goal combined with conditional variational principles. We also obtain the same result for singular hyperbolic attractors.

Abstract:We use entropy theory as a new tool to study sectional hyperbolic flows in any dimension. We show that for $C^1$ flows, every sectional hyperbolic set $\Lambda$ is entropy expansive, and the topological entropy varies continuously with the flow. Furthermore, if $\Lambda$ is Lyapunov stable, then it has positive entropy; in addition, if $\Lambda$ is a chain recurrent class, then it contains a periodic orbit. As a corollary, we prove that for $C^1$ generic flows, every Lorenz-like class is an attractor.

Measure of maximal entropy for finite horizon Sinai billiard flows

Abstract:Using recent work of Carrand on equilibrium states for the billiard map, and bootstrapping via a "leapfrogging" method from a previous article of Baladi and Demers, we construct the unique measure of maximal entropy for two-dimensional finite horizon Sinai (dispersive) billiard flows (and show it is Bernoulli), assuming that the topological entropy of the flow is strictly larger than s_0 log 2 where 0<s_0<1 quantifies the recurrence to singularities. This bound holds in many examples (it is expected to hold generically).

An entropic understanding of flow maldistribution in thermally isolated parallel channels

Abstract:Flow across heated parallel channel systems exists in many applications. The performance of such systems experiencing multiphase flow could suffer from the deleterious effects of flow non-uniformity or maldistribution. Modeling the behavior of such systems is challenging due to the inherent non-linearity associated with the multiphase flow and the difficulty in determining the actual flow among several possible flow distributions. This study addresses the challenge by analyzing the entropy production in such systems. Using experiments on two thermally isolated, nominally identical, and externally heated parallel channels, we quantify irreversibility in the resulting multiphase flow by evaluating the entropy generation rate. Our experiments reveal that certain flow conditions result in severe maldistribution (flow ratio > 10) in the channels, associated with a sharp rise in entropy production. Such an increase is not predicted for uniform flow distribution across parallel channels, making maldistributed flow a thermodynamically favored state over equally distributed flow. We extend this understanding to non-identical parallel channels as well. With entropy analysis providing additional insight besides the fundamental equations governing mass, momentum, and energy conservation, this approach is valuable in predicting and controlling flow distribution in parallel channel systems.

Abstract:We prove the equivariant divergence formula for the axiom A flow attractors, which is a recursive formula for perturbation of transfer operators of physical measures along center-unstable manifolds. Hence the linear response acquires an `ergodic theorem', which means that it can be sampled by recursively computing only $2u$ many vectors on one orbit, where $u$ is the unstable dimension.
