Abstract:This paper studies the contributing factors of maritime piracy by analyzing previous incidents that have been reported to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Part of the analysis is to filter those ship types that are particularly vulnerable to piracy attacks. The paper also introduces the guidelines developed by the IMO and the industry envisaging to minimize the risk to ships that are exposed to attacks from pirates. It further describes the initiatives taken to develop a sustainable mechanism in the high-risk area (HRA)(1) to suppress piracy and other maritime crimes. This study reflects the fact that maritime security and piracy issues' importance has been increasingly recognized in the 40 year history of Maritime Policy & Management.

Abstract:This volume is the outcome of an international workshop held at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna in November 2014. Since the first use of the term ‘Sea Peoples’ (People’s de la Mer) 1867 by French Egyptologist Emmanuel de Rougé, the topic has not lost its popularity, with plenty of attention in recent years, including now published workshops at Louvain-la-Neuve (in 2014) and Warsaw (in 2016). The present volume wanted to go beyond the information provided by the texts and aimed at presenting new archaeological data and their analysis, covering a wider geographical region and implying a more holistic approach than ever before. As the subtitle indicates, the specific aim of the volume is to study the various political, economic, social and cultural transformations in the Eastern Mediterranean from the 13th to 11th centuries BC that can be connected to the Sea Peoples phenomenon.

Abstract:The "Surrounding China seas" as a maritime cultural rim refers to the cross border East Asian sea-region surrounding China,in which developed one of the most prosperous maritime civilization in ancient world.The perspective of this "Surrounding China seas" refrains from wrong knowledge of maritime culture in the view of traditional "Chinese History" centralized on "Official Standard History" of ancient Chinese dynasties.The traditional "Chinese History" refers to Huaxia & Han centrism,advocating that ancient China had created its civilization on the base of inland agriculture culture of central plain,ignoring the key role of prehistoric indigenous maritime culture centralized in the southeast shoreline.The archaeological and ethnological investigation discovered that indigenous Baiyue had created a developed prehistoric maritime culture along the southeast shoreline of China and kept the maritime cultural interacted with Austronesian in Southeast Asia and pacific archipelogoes.This native cultural community of Baiyue and proto-Austronesian generated the earliest maritime civilization during the prehistory and early history of China.After then the Huaxia & Han ethnicity succeeded and developed "Sea Silk Road," "Maritime Ceramic Road" in "Surrounding China seas" after the Tang and Song dynasties.According to multidisciplinary investigation of history of ancient maritime ethnicities,seaports and local maritime cultures,the so called "Great Navigation Age" led by Han ethnicity had been inherited from indigenous maritime culture of Baiyue & Austronesian.

Abstract:The Roman maritime explorations toward the Orient, which were supported by the Roman Empire's prosperity,in most cases, conducted from the Red Sea,which had been a base for the Roman oriental seafaring from the beginning. By the 1st century A. D. the Romans noticed the existing trade between China and India. By the 2nd century A. D. they extended their activities to the eastern coast of the Bay of Bengal and the whole Indo-China Pen.,and reached China by both the land and the sea route,thus establishing direct trade relation and widening up their knowledge about Chia. From the end of the 3rd century on,with the decline of the Roman Empire,especially the rise of the Islamic Arabia,the maritime explorations to the Orient by the Romans and even all Europeans were on the whole intercepted. The unique role should not be ignored of the Romans in opening the relationship with the Orient along the Sea Silk Route.

Abstract:Seagoing at 1 mya to Flores, and sea gaps of >50 km crossed by 47 kya to Sahul, are evidence of earlier maritime migration in the western Pacific than anywhere else. Current opinion attributes the latter to the influence of anatomically modern human cultural complexity on seagoing technology and practice, together with the impetus of serial resource depression. It is argued here that seagoing was unusually advantaged in the western Pacific by a fortuitous conjunction of the warmest seas with a ready availability of large-diameter bamboo that occurred as natural rafts, and which could also be constructed into rafts large enough to transport viable colonizing groups from island to island across Wallacea to Sahul. The geography of Wallacea allowed migration solely by drifting, and exploratory landscape learning might have produced landfalls on Sahul sooner than is implied by subsistence forcing of mobility. Seagoing by drifting raft was much harder from Sahul to the east because of the virtual absence of large-diameter bamboo and longer distance to fewer or small islands; colonization occurred much later.

Abstract:Influenced by the geographical environment, economic demand, nautical equipment and technology, some ancient countries developed sea power earlier, some became maritime empires, and some developed sea power slowly. The geographical environment of Ancient Greek Poleis made them develop sea power and expand their living space. Even Sparta, which was developed in agriculture, had become a maritime power in the fight for hegemony. The Persian Empire had the strength to build warships, but it didn’t have its own naval talents, so it didn’t have enough strength to occupy Greece. Rome defeated Carthage with its own navy and became a maritime power in its aggression and expansion. Ancient Chinese dynasties took agriculture as the foundation, and its geographical environment always led to the invasion of nomads in the northwest. Therefore, the main energy of unifying the country was used to resist the strong enemies in the northwest. All the operations at sea were aimed at conquering adjacent regions, not for the purpose of economic plunder. In Song Dynasty, there was a trend to develop sea power, and after Song Dynasty, there was an economic foundation to do so. However, the implementation of the ban on maritime trade in Ming and Qing Dynasties stagnated the momentum of ancient China’s development of sea power.

Abstract:Abstract An understanding of human mobility and cultural connectivity requires an accurate conception of that which facilitates maritime movement: the sea. The theory of “maritime cultural landscapes” has sought to address these questions from a landscape approach, and it is perhaps the most influential theory in maritime archaeology over the last thirty years. However, recent developments in philosophy challenge the cognitive-landscape theory underpinning the paradigm. This article examines these philosophies, the “flat ontologies” of Speculative Realism and Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) and argues that they can be used to understand the sea as a new type of entity—a hyperobject. In this approach, the sea is not a landscape or facilitator of human activity but an entity of vast geographical and temporal scale that possesses agency. It argues for moving beyond idealist philosophies, such as cultural landscapes, toward the realist philosophy of OOO, including understanding the sea as a hyperobject.

Abstract:Interdisciplinary study of coastal archaeological sites provides a wealth of information on the ecology and evolution of ancient marine animal populations, the structure of past marine ecosystems, and the history of human impacts on coastal fisheries. In this paper, we review recent methodological developments in the archaeology and historical ecology of coastal regions around the world. Using two case studies, we examine (a) a deep history of anthropogenic effects on the marine ecosystems of California's Channel Islands through the past 12,000 years and (b) geographic variation in the effects of human fishing on Pacific Island peoples who spread through Oceania during the late Holocene. These case studies—the first focused on hunter-gatherers, the second on maritime horticulturalists—provide evidence for shifting baselines and timelines, documenting a much deeper anthropogenic influence on many coastal ecosystems and fisheries than considered by most ecologists, conservation biologists, and fisheries managers.

Abstract:According to some authors, the Messinian salinity crisis was ended by a giant waterfall or megaflood 5.33 million years ago, when the Atlantic Ocean reconnected in a catastrophic way with the desiccated Mediterranean, creating the Strait of Gibraltar. An erosional surface deeply cutting upper Miocene or older rocks and sealed by lower Pliocene sediments is the geological feature that inspired this fascinating hypothesis. The hypothesis, which recalls several ancient myths, is well established in the scientific community and often considered to be a fact. However, several studies are suggesting that the Atlantic–Mediterranean connection through the Strait of Gibraltar was probably active before and during the entire Messinian salinity crisis. This allows us to consider the possibility that long-lived, more gradual physical processes were responsible for the evolution of the strait, opening the idea of a nondesiccated Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract:Historical traces of organisms on the seafloor, such as shells and tubes, constitute the ecological memory of ancient benthic assemblages and serve as an important resource for understanding the assembly of modern communities. Archeological shipwrecks are particularly interesting submerged substrata for both their archeological and biological implications. For the first time, we studied the species composition and life-history traits of dominant organisms in the benthic assemblage on a bronze Carthaginian naval ram, which sank more than two thousand years ago in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea. By comparing the species composition of the ram assemblage with those of the surrounding habitats, we inferred possible colonization patterns for the ram and discussed the informative role of the shipwreck as a proxy of marine biodiversity. The ram assemblage was rich in species, including both sessile (bryozoans, serpulid polychaetes, and few bivalves) and motile (gastropods) species. Sexual reproduction with free-spawning fertilization and long-duration larvae characterized most species. The long submersion time of the ram, together with the reproductive strategies, growth forms, and motility of the dominant species were key factors shaping the community of the ram. The ram itself offers an archeological artifact of inestimable value, but our analysis revealed it to be an effective collector of fauna from the surrounding seabed. The ram community hosted species from a range of nearby natural habitats (mostly coralligenous, detritic bottoms, and zoosteracean meadows) and thus served as a proxy for marine biodiversity on the surrounding seabed. We conclude that the presence of many species on the ram that commonly occur in adjacent habitats of great environmental value was informative and highlight the important marine biodiversity in the area of the Aegadian archipelago.

Abstract:Long considered a cultural contact zone, the Mediterranean has become a weaponised border zone keeping refugees from Africa and the Middle East away from 'Fortress Europe'. The Mediterranean has become excessively dangerous to cross, leading many commentators to call this maritime space a 'massive graveyard'. The widespread indifference and enmity towards migrants in Europe is, amongst other things, countered by documentary and commemorative projects by artists drawing attention to the suffering of drowned refugees. In this paper, I zoom in on documentary and memorial artistic projects by Mimmo Paladino, Jason deCaires Taylor, Christoph Büchel, Ai Weiwei and Đỉnh Q. Lê. In the frequent absence of dead bodies and specific grave sites on the 'high seas', they make claims regarding the humanity, singularity and memorability of the human lives of refugees drowned at sea. Based on a description of the artworks and their public, I make two interlinked theoretical arguments. First, the commemorative materialisations by contemporary artists are temporal claims to constitute the cultural heritage of the future. Second, given the sea's aquatic materiality, the commemorative claims of these art projects require that commemorative materialisations must spatially move from the flux of the sea to the fixity of the land.
