Abstract:In the late Qing Dynasty,being stimulated by the various factors geography was developing quickly.This paper presents a name list of 160 geographers in the Qing Dynasty,and suggests that the development of geography in the early and medium Qing Dynasty has laid a foundation for its modernization.It also makes a case study of some famous geographers such as Wei Yuan,Xu Jishe,Cao Tingjie,Zou Daijun and their achievements in world geography,geography of boarder area in China and cartology,etc..Furthermore,discussions are made concerning the rise of new geography's effects and influence in the modernization of sciences in China.

Abstract:The idea that the common ancestor of the human family originated on the African continent about 7 to 5 million years ago is not much disputed by the academic community. However, humans who originated from the same place are nowadays very different. Due to historical origins, customs and living environment, not only are there huge differences in skin color, physique and appearance, but also cultural differences. As the saying goes, one side of the land nurtures one side of the people, and the difference in the geographical environment makes people from different regions not only different from other regions in terms of physiology but also significantly different in terms of culture and psychology. In this paper, we start with the difference in the geographical environment and analyze its influence on the religious, written aspects and science of Eastern and Western cultures. Thus, the conclusion that geographical differences are the root cause of the cultural differences between East and West is drawn to promote economic and cultural exchanges between East and West, and thus better promote the development of world culture.

Abstract:The Enlightenment, usually taken to be an historical period and an intellectual movement of the “long” 18th century in Europe, is here examined as a geographical matter. Attention is paid to the different geographical and social scales of the Enlightenment, to the production, mobility, and reception of new geographical knowledge during the Enlightenment and to the nature of geography in the Enlightenment. Thinking geographically about the Enlightenment challenges that terms conventional, historical, and historiographical treatment displace simplistic notions of “origin,” “core,” and “margin” and emphasize the processes of the Enlightenment's making and movement. The Enlightenment is shown to have been crucially concerned with space and geographical variety, to have been different in its character and consequences over space and to have continuing consequences in understanding the human geography of the world today.

Abstract:It is very important for geographers to know and understand the history of geographical ideas.The relative research findings about the history of geographical thoughts are not enough in China, and it has been ignored for a long time.The scholars who study the history of geographical ideas should not only master and state the geographical ideas and knowledge, and the formation and evolution of them, but also by way of this knowledge accurately understand the nature of the geography.In his book, Geoffrey Martin holds that the difference of the Earth's surface is the keystone of geography, and the main task of geographers is to describe and explain it.The whole history of geographical ideas can be divided into two major phases:the classical and modern times.The demarcation between the first and the second stage is in 1859, because the founders of modern geography, Humboldt and Ritter died in this year.Although geography has common object and subject all over the world, geography of each country has its own tradition and characteristics in the different stages.Geographers should absorb experiences from the history of ideas and learn from the professional counterparts, and avoid the dualism.In the future, geography will focus on some major issues about the development of humanity in the 21st century.In order to know and understand the historical facts of the geographical thoughts, geographers should more profoundly understand "history" and "thought" in the end, and not be limited in a field of geography.For scholars who study the history of geographical thoughts, they should combine tightly geography with history and thought, achieve the final goal that theorizes those historical facts of geographical thoughts.After all, geography is a kind of philosophy, because all geographers are influenced by some philosophical ideas.Judged by the level of philosophy and theory, the work of Martin's is traditional, broad and meticulous, but not enough deeply concerned with theory and philosophy and modern thoughts.

Abstract:THE second title is more descriptive than the first, which suggests a much more ambitious scheme than the author had before him. This little book makes no claim to originality in matter or method. It is a compilation from accessible sources, and, so far as it goes, is a piece of careful and conscientious work. It is neither critical nor learned, and it would be unfair to review it as if it pretended to such distinction. The chapters are concerned mainly with the history of discovery under the titles of ancient geography, the early Christian ages, the crusading impulse, early and mediæval maps, Henry the Navigator, aids to geographical expansion, and Magellan. The statements of generally acknowledged facts are accurate as a rule, and controversial matters are usually excluded. Mathematical and physical geography do not receive adequate notice, even for so small a scale as is employed.

Abstract:During the first few centuries CE, the centre of the known world gradually shifted from Alexandria to Constantinople. Combined with a societal shift from pagan beliefs to Christian doctrines, Antiquity gave way to the Byzantine era. While Western Europe entered an extended period of intellectual decline, Constantinople developed into a rich cultural crossroads between East and West. Yet, Byzantine scholarship in astronomy and geography continued to rely heavily on their ancient Greek heritage, and particularly on Ptolemy's Geography. Unfortunately, Ptolemy's choices for his geographic coordinate system resulted in inherent and significant distortions of and inaccuracies in maps centred on the Byzantine Empire. This comprehensive review of Byzantine geographic achievements -- supported by a review of astronomical developments pertaining to position determination on Earth -- aims to demonstrate why and how, when Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453 and the Ottoman Empire commenced, Byzantine astronomers had become the central axis in an extensive network of Christians, Muslims and Jews. Their influence remained significant well into the Ottoman era, particularly in the context of geographical applications.

Progress in Human Geography

Abstract:Traditional Chinese historical geography is closely related to yange dili. Concepts relating to man-land relations are the underlying theories. The Yugong Society played a key role in the transformation of the Chinese historical geography from yange dili to modern historical geography. In the second half of the twentieth century, Chinese historical geographers made substantial contributions. Two main themes are the geographical change through time and the reconstruction of past geographies. Major research topics include changes of national territories and administrative divisions, changes of physical environments, urban geography, population, agricultural geography, social and cultural aspects, general and regional geographies, historical cartographics, and other aspects. Chinese historical geography is indigenous, but with western influence. Nevertheless, the Chinese historical geography is still very much descriptive and lags behind the west in theoretical research. Most Chinese historical geographers are originally trained historians. Hence they are more interested in studies of changes through time than in researches of spatial variations. Chinese historical geography is maturing as a respected field of study.

Abstract:As a certain type of literature expression, travel writing is a project of translating an actual travel into a written record which takes both historical and geographic value meriting from its temporal and spatial bearings. To excavate the history of geographical thoughts within this kind of literature, this paper presents a qualitative content analysis of the Chinese versions of three travel writings, namely, The Travels of Marco Polo, The Voyage of the Beagle,Diary of Christopher Columbus's First Voyage to America. The three writings were finished respectively during the 12th century, 14th century and 18th century, and presented a significant change of the westerners’ recognition in global space, economic geography and political geography. Through comparative and semantic approaches, the study finds out three significant transformations of western geographic thoughts: the extension of recognition of global space, the substitution of liberal trade by mercantilism, and the rise of political concept "eurocentrism".

Progress in Human Geography

Abstract:In the midst of what has been termed the ‘urban age’, two divergent approaches to understanding life in cities have emerged. In this first of three urban geography progress reports, I engage these two strands of urban theory, identifying key differences in their intellectual, political and geographical genealogies, and consider their political and epistemological implications. Borrowing from Chakrabarty’s concept of History 1 and History 2, I name these approaches ‘Urbanization 1’ and ‘Urbanization 2’. Urbanization 1 is exemplified by the planetary urbanization thesis that posits the complete urbanization of society, whereas Urbanization 2 is characterized by a more diverse set of interventions, united by a political and epistemological strategy of refusing Eurocentrism and ‘provincializing’ urban theory.

Abstract:The understanding of“oriental”peoples and civilizations in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations shows a pronounced Orientalism. The separation of the orient from the occident is foreshadowed in Homer's epic record of the Trojan War. After the Persian War, the Greeks gradually imagined the orient, symbolized by Persia, as a model of“the barbarian”. With Persia as the archetype, they created an abstract image of“barbarians.”A discourse of“others”as opposed to Western civilization took shape. By the later stages of the Classical period, the Greek discourse of the“otherness”of the“Orient”to a certain extent encouraged and legitimized Alexander's eastward expedition. As Rome turned from a republic to an empire, the Romans accepted and utilized the Greek discourse of Orientalism to realize their rule over the Orient. Orientalism is a deeply rooted and long-standing idea and discourse tradition in Western civilization.

Abstract:Biogeography has been consistently well represented in the Annals throughout the Association of American Geographers' first century. This sample of biogeographic research effectively illustrates the persistent questions explored by the subdiscipline as well as changes in the intellectual perspectives taken on them. Four fundamental issues occupied biogeographers throughout this period (spatial pattern and process, landscape change, human modification of biotic communities, and linking physical and biological systems), but shifting research emphases show clear parallels to the major paradigmatic trends of 20th‐century geography, including environmental determinism, regionalism, positivism, and postmodernism. These shifts define a number of fairly distinct periods of research activity: an early (1904–1927) focus on equilibrium environmental control of biotic communities and their dynamics, regional analysis and vegetation mapping (1942–1966), an increasing emphasis on methodological sophistication that prompted emphasis of environmental variability (1967–1987), and a recent (1987–present) reexamination of landscape dynamics with a concern for heterogeneity in space and time.

Abstract:The ascendancy of the Western Zhou in Bronze Age China, 1045–771 BC, was a critical period in the development of Chinese civilisation and culture. This book addresses the complex relationship between geography and political power in the context of the crisis and fall of the Western Zhou state. Drawing on the latest archaeological discoveries, the book shows how inscribed bronze vessels can be used to reveal changes in the political space of the period and explores literary and geographical evidence to produce a coherent understanding of the Bronze Age past. By taking an interdisciplinary approach which embraces archaeology, history and geography, the book thoroughly reinterprets late Western Zhou history and probes the causes of its gradual decline and eventual fall. Supported throughout by maps created from the GIS datasets and by numerous on-site photographs, Landscape and Power in Early China gives significant insights into this important Bronze Age society.

From the center of the Earth, Dante and Virgil came to the Antipodes: eventually, their existence was accepted. Among the others, we will discuss the works of the Venerable Bede and Sylvester the Second.

Abstract:By extracting information from various original materials and using geography departments, curricula, and faculty as indicators, this paper contributes to the discussion of the development of geography in higher education in China from 1904 to 1949. Four mutual connections are outlined. First, the development of geography in higher education is inextricably linked to social and political changes. Second, geography in higher education during the period concerned progressed in fits and starts, which affected its distribution. Third, geography departments were split into two categories according to the type of higher educational institution, which created differences in the tasks, curricula, and faculty of these departments. Fourth, faculty were trained in both domestic and foreign universities, and Western universities made an obvious contribution to the growth of qualified academic faculty. Simultaneously, universities where qualified academic faculty were trained were centralized both in domestic and foreign aspects. The special role of geographers returning from overseas study, the particularity of geography in higher education in China, and the connection between Chinese and foreign geography are also discussed in terms of geography departments, curricula, and faculty.

Abstract:The “cultural landscape” has been a fundamental concept in geography and was first defined as “landscape modified by human activity” by the German geographer Friedrich Ratzel in 1890. It was introduced to American geography in the 1920s by Carl O. Sauer (American geographer). Since the 1960s, the concept has been widely used in human geography, anthropology, environmental management, and other related fields. One of the major factors that contributed to the recent popularity of its use, on a global scale, was the adoption of cultural landscapes in the International Convention for the World Heritage Convention by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1992. In this chapter, the basis of this concept, its emergence, and its relationships with other scientific disciplines, particularly geography, will be discussed. Moreover, the place of cultural landscapes within protected areas and UNESCO world heritage sites will be more specifically addressed.
