Abstract:James Rennell (1742–1830) could be claimed as the father of historical geography. After a long career at sea and in India, during which he had learned surveying and cartography, he returned to England, and entered the circle of Sir Joseph Banks, who encouraged him to widen the his interests to include the geography of the ancient world. This two-volume work was published posthumously in 1831: Rennell had been working on the topic for many years, and had published a part of his findings in 1814, as Observations on the Topography of the Plain of Troy, also reissued in this series. The area covered in the treatise is a wide one, from Egypt to the Danube and from the Aegean to the Caspian Sea. In Volume 1, Rennell lays out his geographical findings, and begins to discuss the relations of the modern to the ancient world.

Abstract:Through nearly 30 years of efforts, a four-volume History of Greek Philosophy written by three generations of Chinese scholars has been completed. The newly published volume focuses on Greek and Roman philosophy after Aristotle, including Stoicism, Epicureans, Skepticism, Neo-Platonism and the early Christian thought influenced by Greek philosophy. Based on the studies of western scholars, the history writing of late Greek philosophy with the characteristics of Chinese cultural background should straighten out the following problems or relations: 1. late Greek philosophy and the context of Mediterranean culture; 2. schools of philosophers and philosophy beyond school; 3. late Greek philosophy and the former two phases; 4. Electicism and the features of Roman culture; 5. oriental civilization and its reversed impact on Greek and Roman culture or the contention between "Athens and Jerusalem"; 6. interpretation of the late Greek philosophy against the background of Chinese culture.

Abstract:THE second title is more descriptive than the first, which suggests a much more ambitious scheme than the author had before him. This little book makes no claim to originality in matter or method. It is a compilation from accessible sources, and, so far as it goes, is a piece of careful and conscientious work. It is neither critical nor learned, and it would be unfair to review it as if it pretended to such distinction. The chapters are concerned mainly with the history of discovery under the titles of ancient geography, the early Christian ages, the crusading impulse, early and mediæval maps, Henry the Navigator, aids to geographical expansion, and Magellan. The statements of generally acknowledged facts are accurate as a rule, and controversial matters are usually excluded. Mathematical and physical geography do not receive adequate notice, even for so small a scale as is employed.

Abstract:It is very important for geographers to know and understand the history of geographical ideas.The relative research findings about the history of geographical thoughts are not enough in China, and it has been ignored for a long time.The scholars who study the history of geographical ideas should not only master and state the geographical ideas and knowledge, and the formation and evolution of them, but also by way of this knowledge accurately understand the nature of the geography.In his book, Geoffrey Martin holds that the difference of the Earth's surface is the keystone of geography, and the main task of geographers is to describe and explain it.The whole history of geographical ideas can be divided into two major phases:the classical and modern times.The demarcation between the first and the second stage is in 1859, because the founders of modern geography, Humboldt and Ritter died in this year.Although geography has common object and subject all over the world, geography of each country has its own tradition and characteristics in the different stages.Geographers should absorb experiences from the history of ideas and learn from the professional counterparts, and avoid the dualism.In the future, geography will focus on some major issues about the development of humanity in the 21st century.In order to know and understand the historical facts of the geographical thoughts, geographers should more profoundly understand "history" and "thought" in the end, and not be limited in a field of geography.For scholars who study the history of geographical thoughts, they should combine tightly geography with history and thought, achieve the final goal that theorizes those historical facts of geographical thoughts.After all, geography is a kind of philosophy, because all geographers are influenced by some philosophical ideas.Judged by the level of philosophy and theory, the work of Martin's is traditional, broad and meticulous, but not enough deeply concerned with theory and philosophy and modern thoughts.

Geographical Thoughts Presented in Western Travel Writings during Pre-classical Period: A Review of Marco Polo, Columbus and Darwin’s Travel Notes

Abstract:As a certain type of literature expression, travel writing is a project of translating an actual travel into a written record which takes both historical and geographic value meriting from its temporal and spatial bearings. To excavate the history of geographical thoughts within this kind of literature, this paper presents a qualitative content analysis of the Chinese versions of three travel writings, namely, The Travels of Marco Polo, The Voyage of the Beagle,Diary of Christopher Columbus's First Voyage to America. The three writings were finished respectively during the 12th century, 14th century and 18th century, and presented a significant change of the westerners’ recognition in global space, economic geography and political geography. Through comparative and semantic approaches, the study finds out three significant transformations of western geographic thoughts: the extension of recognition of global space, the substitution of liberal trade by mercantilism, and the rise of political concept "eurocentrism".

Abstract:This article first discusses the classifications of ancient Chinese architectures made by researchers with different cultural backgrounds.Then it reviews the classification criteria in Ji Cheng's"Yuan Ye"and examples of how ancient architectures was named by literati of various dynasties by differentiating and analyzing the relationships of"making the use of borrowed scenery"and"complementation"between buildings and landscapes in Chinese gardens.On this basis,the article explores the different tendencies between the East and the West when addressing issues in respect of classification.The west puts more emphasis on the static"entities",while the east focuses more on the dynamic"relationships".Finally,the article describes how the"cultural ethnocentrism"in the West was formed and what influence it had brought to China.

Abstract:In the 1960s, geology was transformed by the paradigm of plate tectonics. The 1965 paper of Bullard, Everett and Smith was a linking transition between the theories of continental drift and plate tectonics. They showed, conclusively, that the continents around the Atlantic were once contiguous and that the Atlantic Ocean had grown at rates of a few centimetres per year since the Early Jurassic, about 160 Ma. They achieved fits of the continental margins at the 500 fathom line (approx. 900 m), not the shorelines, by minimizing misfits between conjugate margins and finding axes, poles and angles of rotation, using Euler's theorem, that defined the unique single finite difference rotation that carried congruent continents from contiguity to their present positions, recognizing that the real motion may have been more complex around a number of finite motion poles. Critically, they were concerned only with kinematic reality and were not restricted by considerations of the mechanism by which continents split and oceans grow. Many of the defining features of plate tectonics were explicit or implicit in their reconstructions, such as the torsional rigidity of continents, Euler's theorem, closure of the Tethyan ocean(s), major continental margin shear zones, the rapid rotation of small continental blocks (Iberia) around nearby poles, the consequent opening of small wedge-shaped oceans (Bay of Biscay), and misfit overlaps (deltas and volcanic piles) and underlaps (stretched continental edges). This commentary was written to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.

Abstract:The understanding of“oriental”peoples and civilizations in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations shows a pronounced Orientalism. The separation of the orient from the occident is foreshadowed in Homer's epic record of the Trojan War. After the Persian War, the Greeks gradually imagined the orient, symbolized by Persia, as a model of“the barbarian”. With Persia as the archetype, they created an abstract image of“barbarians.”A discourse of“others”as opposed to Western civilization took shape. By the later stages of the Classical period, the Greek discourse of the“otherness”of the“Orient”to a certain extent encouraged and legitimized Alexander's eastward expedition. As Rome turned from a republic to an empire, the Romans accepted and utilized the Greek discourse of Orientalism to realize their rule over the Orient. Orientalism is a deeply rooted and long-standing idea and discourse tradition in Western civilization.

Abstract:Ancient Chinese civilization was deeply rooted in a profound understanding of the environment. This understanding formed the primitive worship and unique culture of mountains and rivers, which found expression in both official and folk contexts. This essay delves into the significant influence of mountains and rivers on the site selection, positioning, and composition of ancient Chinese settlements. Through an in-depth analysis of cases, this study demonstrates that iconic mountain and river elements served as the foundation for determining the spatial locations of ancient Chinese settlements and the core references for designed landscapes. The settlement and surrounding mountains and rivers form a well-conceived integrated spatial composition, which threads the whole planning and construction process. As the determining factors for the spatial axes and forms of settlements, mountains and rivers also became the central objects of the feng shui theory. Therefore, the human geography of ancient China is not only a reflection of functions but also the result of the builders' diligent pursuit of spatial and cultural layouts. The study of the cultural genes allows for a deeper understanding of the cultural landscape of ancient China, leading to a commitment to protecting traditional settlements and their intact environmental systems.

Abstract:Great changes of fashion in late Ming Dynasty turned traveling a serious business. It was then quite popular that lots of literators were keen on traveling around famous mountains and rivers or having a look into the social phase. Many people had written to describe natural and human landscapes. Among them, those who did good job became great travelers and those especially preeminent ones distinguished themselves as geographers. Through a roundly research on the anthologies of the Ming literators, this paper demonstrates how traveling became a common practice in late Ming in view of the quantity of the traveling notes and the knowledge-accumulated records. In addition, it also analyzed the historical background when geography surfaced as a independent discipline by breaking from history.

Abstract:Classical Antiquity is strongly present in youth culture globally. It accompanies children during their initiation into adulthood and thereby deepens their knowledge of the cultural code based on the Greek and Roman heritage. It enables intergenerational communication, with the reception of the Classics being able to serve as a marker of transformations underway in societies the world over. The team of contributors from Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand focuses on the reception of mythical creatures as the key to these transformations, including the changes in human mentality. Abstract:While landscape can be explored through the discourse of language and materiality, the enchantment of landscape remains ambiguous. In trying to unconceal the magic of landscape, this paper turns to the connection between Heidegger’s phenomenology and Chinese Daoism through the concept of landscape as the painted picture. Using the literal meaning of the Chinese landscape as the ‘scene of the wind’, or rather the scene of the invisible, I explore how landscape can be understood through the combination of Heideggerian hermeneutics and Chinese Daoism as the literal and metaphorical Void between mortality and divinity, earth and sky. Traditional Chinese landscape painting, as the Daoist philosophy in portraying the essence of truth in nature and life, is contrasted with Western Romanticism and Ruskin’s ideals of art as truth. Through the disturbance of what is subject and object, as well as what is visible and invisible in the perception of landscape, I conclude that the magic of landscape lies in the paradox: the between state where logic is inversed, where the Void is nothingness, where truth is sought and where belief is magical.
