Abstract:This article studies the significance of Zheng He's voyage on Sino - African relations from three perspectives, Sino - African relations before Zheng He's voyage, the linkage between the event and Sino - African relations , and some questions remained unresolved about his voyage to Africa. Although there had been a long history of the Sino -African contact, yet Zheng He carried it to the most significant stage. The author discusses the beginning , sea route, result, impact and significance of the voyage, and lists six questions about Zheng He's voyage to Africa that have not been answered.

Abstract:There are at least 15 temples of Zheng He and nearly 30 legends about Zheng He in Southeast Asia. These temples and legends reflect the early life of Chinese immigrants in Southeast Asia, their intermarriages with local women, the characteristics of their religions and their important roles in cultural exchange between China and foreign countries. The commemorative activities of Zheng He by the ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia are combined with carrying forward Chinese cultural traditions and assimilating local cultures, with propagating the friendship between the homeland and the host countries, with developing the pioneer spirit of overseas Chinese, and with striving for the just rights and interests of the ethnic Chinese, promoting the national concord and flourishing the local economy. Although the impact of Zheng He is significant in Southeast Asia, the understanding of Zheng He is very limited. Thus, thoroughly introducing Zheng He's contribution to the rest of the world remains an imminent and challenging task.

Abstract:Zheng he was born in a Muslim family and participated in various Islamic activities in China. There have been a number of historical records and folk tales documenting Zheng He's activities of spreading Islam outside China. However, these activities could not be found in Chinese historical records. This paper intends to introduce relevant overseas literature in the context of the social background of Southeast Asian, and analyzes the possible reasons for very limited research on Zheng He's spreading Islam outside China. It argues that it is reasonably possible that Zheng He was involved in spreading Islam overseas during his seven voyages to the West. Despite that the overseas historical records remain to be verified more thoroughly, they provide valuable and helpful sources for comprehensive research on Zheng He's voyages to the West, particularly, their impact on the development of Islam in Southeast Asia. Provided that these historical records are genuine, the impact of Zheng He on Islam in Southeast A-sia can also constitute a component of the cultural exchange between China and Southeast Asian.

Abstract:In recent years, China has sought to extend its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) from Central Asia and Southeast Asia to Africa. This article argues that Chinese officials, aided by Chinese maritime archaeologists, journalists and researchers, have used discourses of heritage and history as a form of soft padding to justify China's infrastructure projects in Africa. Zheng He, a Ming dynasty admiral, who had allegedly visited East Africa in four of his seven famous voyages across the Indian Ocean, is particularly important in China's narrative of its historical relations with Africa. The details of Zheng He's engagement with Africa remain contested by historians, especially those in Western academia. The Chinese government thus supports 'sub-initiatives' of heritage and history construction, namely maritime archaeology, travel journalism and student fellowships, to substantiate the legacy of Zheng He in Africa. By suggesting that China and Africa also share the legacy of having been exploited, humiliated and victimized by European colonial powers, Chinese intellectuals have fashioned the BRI into an anti-imperialist discourse for acceptance by their African counterparts.

Abstract:The expedition of Zheng He's fleet to the Western Ocean(1) in the first half of the 15(th) century is an important event in the history of navigation, which has attracted the broad attention of domestic and foreign scholars from different fields(2). This paper reveals the relation between Zheng He's voyages and the Asian Monsoon from a geographical perspective. Historical records show that Zheng He's seven voyages to the Western Ocean were precisely organized and successfully carried out due to careful consideration of the conditions and periodical patterns of the Asian tropical and subtropical monsoon. Details such as fleet routes, sailing schedules, wind-waiting points, divergent and rendezvous points were painstakingly planned and arranged in advance by the organizers of the expedition, who all paid close attention to the changing patterns of the Asian Monsoon.

The scholars in China have also discovered, within the study of Zheng He's maritime expeditions, the true aspects of their history that Chinese people can feel proud of. This article sifts through both the arguments and counterarguments as well as their respective evidence, and it pursues further textual research on relevant documents and materials for the purpose of examining the possibility for Chinese visits to the Americas before Columbus. Seen from the point of view of globalization, even if Zheng He's fleet or other Chinese people reached the Americas before Columbus, their journey (which awaits confirmation) could not have had as much influence on the links between the New and Old Worlds as did those of later explorers. In spite of this, the seven large-scale voyages of Zheng He's fleet in the Indian Ocean promoted maritime links within the Old World before Columbus's great voyages in the Atlantic, making contributions to the history of globalization that are as important as those made later by Columbus.

Abstract:The "Surrounding China seas" as a maritime cultural rim refers to the cross border East Asian sea-region surrounding China,in which developed one of the most prosperous maritime civilization in ancient world.The perspective of this "Surrounding China seas" refrains from wrong knowledge of maritime culture in the view of traditional "Chinese History" centralized on "Official Standard History" of ancient Chinese dynasties.The traditional "Chinese History" refers to Huaxia & Han centrism,advocating that ancient China had created its civilization on the base of inland agriculture culture of central plain,ignoring the key role of prehistoric indigenous maritime culture centralized in the southeast shoreline.The archaeological and ethnological investigation discovered that indigenous Baiyue had created a developed prehistoric maritime culture along the southeast shoreline of China and kept the maritime cultural interacted with Austronesian in Southeast Asia and pacific archipelogoes.This native cultural community of Baiyue and proto-Austronesian generated the earliest maritime civilization during the prehistory and early history of China.After then the Huaxia & Han ethnicity succeeded and developed "Sea Silk Road," "Maritime Ceramic Road" in "Surrounding China seas" after the Tang and Song dynasties.According to multidisciplinary investigation of history of ancient maritime ethnicities,seaports and local maritime cultures,the so called "Great Navigation Age" led by Han ethnicity had been inherited from indigenous maritime culture of Baiyue & Austronesian.

Abstract:The Hepu Han Tombs, located on the south coast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in southern China, bordering the Beibu Gulf, can date back to the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), when Hepu was an important international trade port of the maritime Silk Road, spreading strong and persistent cultural influence to neighboring countries from ancient China, and also connecting China with African, European and other Asian countries in national migration, religious communication, political, trade, technical and cultural exchanges, and so on. The research of the Hepu Han Tombs can offer opportunities to understand the burial customs and the Han culture in the Chinese Han Dynasty. With the aim of detecting the location, depth and geometry of two burial mounds at Jinjiling Site of Hepu Han Tombs, an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey was performed in cooperation with archaeological team to calibrate the results with detailed information from the limited drillings in the area. Besides, series of 2-D ERT sections, acquired above the larger mound, were combined into a “Pseudo 3-D” volume, and iso-resistivity surfaces were further calculated to emphasize the location and lateral variations within the data volume, expected towards a more detailed and quantitative interpretation. Both the 2-D and 3-D resistivity imaging gave a clear evidence of structural details of the burial mounds. The results have shown a general consistency between the geophysical work and traditional archaeological drilling explorations, improving our knowledge on the un-excavated mounds, and allowing detailed pre-excavation plan at the Hepu Han Tombs.

Abstract:The Great Geographical Discovery is a specialized concept with specific time and content stipulations.It presupposes two conditions: one purpose is conquer;the other purpose as well as the result is open up new commercial sea-lanes.Any voyage that isn't in accordance with the aforementioned conditions should not be put into the domain of the Great Geographical Discovery.Neither the purpose and content nor the result of Zheng He's voyage to the western ocean agrees with these two conditions,so it is only a heroic undertaking in the navigation history.It is unrelated to,let alone preludes the Great Geographical Discovery.

Abstract:In 1992 a group of ?ve deity images was unearthed in the Daoist Xianying Temple in Xianqi village, Zhanggang township, Changle, Fujian province. Located on the spirit altar on the right side of the Front Hall of the temple complex, the group of coloured figures was dubbed “The God Officials who Patrol the Oceans”. Since their excavation, the theory has prevailed that this group represents Zheng He but there has been no research to back up this claim and no researcher has elucidated when these figures were carved and in what historical context. The author looks firslyt at ritual conventions governing the clothing worn by of?cials in the Ming Dynasty and draws on ?ve illustrated works of the period for this preliminary work. This attention to the details of apparel enables the author to con?rm that the ?gures do indeed depict Zheng He. The author then examines the sculptural pieces themselves, and this research also con?rms the identi?cation. This then makes these sculptural pieces the ?rst discovery to the present day in China of any sculptural images of Zheng He, and they are also the oldest sculptures of Zheng He found anywhere in the world.

Abstract:From ancient times the main means of human contact was by land. Zhang Qian of the Western Han dynasty reached the Western Regions by Silk Road, where thus the civilization of the East and West converged. In the early 1500s Zheng He went on sea voyage seven times, marking the turning from land to sea and finally the whole globe was formed by sea, Zheng He marked the beginning of navigation that was both the end of the old period and the beginning of the new. His navigation changed the direction of human history.

Abstract:The Roman maritime explorations toward the Orient, which were supported by the Roman Empire's prosperity,in most cases, conducted from the Red Sea,which had been a base for the Roman oriental seafaring from the beginning. By the 1st century A. D. the Romans noticed the existing trade between China and India. By the 2nd century A. D. they extended their activities to the eastern coast of the Bay of Bengal and the whole Indo-China Pen.,and reached China by both the land and the sea route,thus establishing direct trade relation and widening up their knowledge about Chia. From the end of the 3rd century on,with the decline of the Roman Empire,especially the rise of the Islamic Arabia,the maritime explorations to the Orient by the Romans and even all Europeans were on the whole intercepted. The unique role should not be ignored of the Romans in opening the relationship with the Orient along the Sea Silk Route.

Abstract:The extensive cemetery at Hepu in southern China represents one of the best-preserved tomb complexes of the Han period. It contains many elaborate tombs with exotic luxury materials that testify to the status of Hepu as the home port of the maritime Silk Road. This trading network carried Chinese products (notably silks) by sea to kingdoms and communities of South and Southeast Asia, and was the southern counterpart to the more famous overland Silk Road through Central Asia. The materials found in the Hepu tombs demonstrate the range and geography of contacts, including semi-precious beads from India and ceramics from the Parthian empire. This far-flung trade network had major impacts both on southern China and on the other regions that it connected.

Abstract:Pieces of charts of sea area in Zhoushan from 1933 to 2004 are studied.Digital evaluation model(DEM) of different period is established based on GIS.By superposing the different DEM,the erosion and deposition in waterway of Ma′ao port,longitudinal profile and anchorage is calculated.It is shown that,in general,the erosion and deposition is balance and the seabed is stable in this sea area.The deposition is little in front of the dock,which is good for the depth maintaining.

Abstract:In modern popular literature, blogs on the Internet and other media aimed at the mass reader one is more and more likely to find an assumption that the famous Chinese admiral of the Ming dynasty, Zheng He (1371—?), could be the prototype of the legendary Arab merchant and traveler Sinbad, whose seven fantastic voyages were subsequently included in the collection of folktales “One Thousand and One Nights”. This article analyzes the historical, textual and linguistic arguments for and against such a presumption from both the Chinese and Arab-Persian sides. The first part presents a general criticism of this hypothesis, after which the three main arguments of its supporters are examined separately. The author comes to the following conclusions: it is most likely that the cycle about Sinbad was formed much earlier than the expeditions of Zheng He on the basis of various myths and a self-sufficient Arab-Persian geographical and nautical tradition; the generally accepted statement that both personalities made seven voyages is in fact very controversial; Sanbao was the name given not only to Zheng He, but also to other officials at the Ming court, including those who were in no way connected with the expeditions to the Western Ocean, and the history of the appearance and use of this expression is very vague. Thus, the desire to see Zheng He as a source of inspiration for the creation of the character of Sinbad the Sailor seems groundless, and the arguments in its favor do not stand up to scientific criticism.

Abstract:The “Silk Road” is a focus of historical and archaeological research that explores the ancient routes of transportation between the East and West. Most academic scholars in the last few decades have assumed that the Maritime Silk Road emerged much later than the one on land and was part of the Silk Road’s broader geographic shift from land to sea. However, according to recent investigations of southeast China’s cultural heritage in prehistoric archaeology and ethno-archaeology, the maritime transportation known as the “Four Oceans” Navigation system has in fact existed since the Neolithic Age, when the prehistoric ancestors of indigenous Yi (夷) and Yue (越) peoples of coastal China began navigating between mainland and offshore islands. Thus, the development of the maritime Silk Road in the southeast of China and Asia occurred no later than the land Silk Road of the inland northwest areas of China and inner Asia. The prehistoric Yue ethnicity and proto-Austronesian peoples in mainland southeastern China initiated first nautical techniques with simple sailing devices, compound canoes and celestial navigation. These developments thousands years ago became the fundamental building blocks for the development of the Maritime Silk Road during the late historical period. As a result, the Maritime Silk Road was not, as previously assumed, the product of cultural change in the land Silk Road or the shift of ancient China’s economic center from north to south.
