Abstract:Lack of nonreciprocity is one of the major drawbacks of solid-state acoustic devices, which has hindered the development of microwave-frequency acoustic isolators and circulators. Although the static magnetic moments of two layers are parallel, SH-SAWs can excite optical-mode spin waves much stronger than acoustic-mode ones at relatively low frequencies via magnetoelastic coupling. The measured magnitude nonreciprocity exceeds 40 dB (or 80 dB/mm) at 2.333 GHz. In addition, maximum nonreciprocal phase accumulation reaches 188° (376°/mm), which is desired for an effective SAW circulator. Our theoretical model and calculations provide an insight into the observed phenomena and demonstrate a pathway for further improvement of nonreciprocal acoustic devices.

Abstract:Nonreciprocity of propagation of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in the microwave frequency band can be achieved using the magnetoelastic interaction of SAWs with spin waves (SWs) propagating in magnetic heterostructures. Recent works have shown that the ultimate isolation of a counterpropagating hybridized SAW/SW is achieved in heterostructures consisting of a synthetic antiferromagnet—a ferromagnetic (FM) bilayer with antiferromagnetic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interlayer coupling—placed on top of a piezoelectric acoustic waveguide. In this work, we study in detail a more practical and technologically simpler system based on an FM bilayer, where layers are coupled by only dipole-dipole interaction, and having noncollinear magnetizations of the FM layers. A weak in-plane anisotropy with noncollinear easy axes in the layers is shown to be the only essential factor for the realization of strongly nonreciprocal propagation of a hybridized SAW/SW. We formulate requirements for the relative orientation of the layer's magnetizations and wave propagation direction necessary to realize an efficient SAW isolator, and demonstrate examples of SAW transmission characteristics which prove the possibility of achieving an isolation exceeding 50 dB for a submillimeter-long FM bilayer with insertion losses of just a few decibels more than those of a pure SAW device. Abstract:Strong magneto-optical effect with low external magnetic field is of great importance to achieve high-performance isolators in modern optics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a significant enhancement of the magneto-optical effect and nonreciprocal chiral transmission in low-biased gyrotropic media. A designer magneto-optical metasurface consists of a gyrotropy-near-zero slab doped with magnetic resonant inclusions. The immersed magnetic dopants enable efficient nonreciprocal light-matter interactions at the subwavelength scale, providing a giant macroscopic nonreciprocity and strong robustness against the bias disturbance. Microwave measurements reveal that the metasurface can act as a chiral isolator for circular polarization, with extremely weak intrinsic gyromagnetic activity. We also demonstrate its capability of signal isolation for circularly polarized antennas. Our findings provide an experimental verification of nonreciprocal photonic doping with low static magnetic fields.

Abstract:We have studied the transmission of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in ferromagnetic/non-magnetic/ferromagnetic tryilayers. The SAW scattering matrix is studied for devices with various non-magnetic spacer thickness, which defines the strength of the interlayer exchange coupling. We find the SAW transmission amplitude depends on their propagation direction when the two ferromagnetic layers are coupled antiferromagnetically. The degree of such SAW nonreciprocity increases with increasing exchange coupling strength and reaches 37 dB/mm for a device with the thinnest spacer layer. These results show the potential of interlayer exchange coupled synthetic antiferromagnets for viable acoustic nonreciprocal transmission devices, such as circulators and isolators.

Abstract:The coupling between surface acoustic waves (SAWs) and spin waves (SWs) in piezoelectric/magnetic heterostructures holds potential for the realization of novel microwave devices. Since SAWs are inherently reciprocal, the nonreciprocity arising from magnetoacoustic interaction is of particular interest. Large nonreciprocal SAW transmission in a limited frequency range near the intersection point of the SAW and SW dispersions has been recently reported in several studies. Here, we demonstrate that the nonreciprocal SW dispersion of a CoFeB(16 nm)/Ru(0.55 nm)/CoFeB(14 nm) synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) can be adjusted to match the linear dispersion of the SAW in a wide range of frequencies f. Therefore, the SAW transmission is nonreciprocal for 2.8 GHz < f < 7.0 GHz with low losses (<0.08 dB) mediated by SAW-SW interaction in the forward direction and large attenuation (>5 dB) in the reverse direction. These results hold great potential for the realization of devices allowing wide-band nonreciprocal signal transmission.

Abstract:Acoustic waves are versatile on-chip information carriers that can be used in applications such as microwave filters and transducers. Nonreciprocal devices, in which the transmission of waves is non-symmetric between two ports, are desirable for the manipulation and routing of phonons, but building acoustic non-reciprocal devices is difficult because acoustic systems typically have a linear response. Here, we report non-reciprocal transmission of microwave surface acoustic waves using a nonlinear parity–time symmetric system based on two coupled acoustic resonators in a lithium niobate platform. Owing to the strong piezoelectricity of lithium niobate, we can tune the gain, loss and nonlinearity of the system using electric circuitry. Our approach can achieve 10 dB of non-reciprocal transmission for surface acoustic waves at a frequency of 200 MHz, and we use it to demonstrate a one-way circulation of acoustic waves in cascading non-reciprocal devices.
Symmetry and nonlinearity of spin wave resonance excited by focused surface acoustic waves

Abstract:The use of a complex ferromagnetic system to manipulate GHz surface acoustic waves is a rich current topic under investigation, but the high-power nonlinear regime is under-explored. We introduce focused surface acoustic waves, which provide a way to access this regime with modest equipment. Symmetry of the magneto-acoustic interaction can be tuned by interdigitated transducer design which can introduce additional strain components. Here, we compare the impact of focused acoustic waves versus standard unidirectional acoustic waves in significantly enhancing the magnon-phonon coupling behavior. Analytical simulation results based on modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert theory show good agreement with experimental findings. We also report nonlinear input power dependence of the transmission through the device. This experimental observation is supported by the micromagnetic simulation using mumax3 to model the nonlinear dependence. These results pave the way for extending the understanding and design of acoustic wave devices for exploration of acoustically driven spin wave resonance physics.

Abstract:We reveal the cooperative effect of coherent and dissipative magnon-photon couplings in an open cavity magnonic system, which leads to nonreciprocity with a considerably large isolation ratio and flexible controllability. Furthermore, we discover unidirectional invisibility for microwave propagation, which appears at the zero-damping condition for hybrid magnon-photon modes. A simple model is developed to capture the generic physics of the interference between coherent and dissipative couplings, which accurately reproduces the observations over a broad range of parameters. This general scheme could inspire methods to achieve nonreciprocity in other systems.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal magnon propagation has recently become a highly potential approach of developing chip-embedded microwave isolators for advanced information processing. However, it is challenging to achieve large nonreciprocity in miniaturized magnetic thin-film devices because of the difficulty of distinguishing propagating surface spin waves along the opposite directions when the film thickness is small. In this work, we experimentally realize unidirectional microwave transduction with sub-micron-wavelength propagating magnons in a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film delay line. We achieve a non-decaying isolation of 30 dB with a broad field-tunable band-pass frequency range up to 14 GHz. The large isolation is due to the selection of chiral magnetostatic surface spin waves with the Oersted field generated from the coplanar waveguide antenna. Increasing the geometry ratio between the antenna width and YIG thickness drastically reduces the nonreciprocity and introduces additional magnon transmission bands. Our results pave the way for on-chip microwave isolation and tunable delay line with short-wavelength magnonic excitations.

Observation of nonreciprocal diffraction of surface acoustic wave

Abstract:Rectification phenomenon caused by the simultaneous breaking of time reversal and spatial inversion symmetries has been extended to a wide range of (quasi)particles and waves; however, the nonreciprocal diffraction, which is the imbalance of upward and downward deflections, was previously observed only for photons and remained to be extended to other (quasi)particles. In this study, we present evidence of the nonreciprocal diffraction of surface acoustic wave (SAW) utilizing a magnetoelastic grating on a SAW device. Asymmetric diffraction intensities were observed when the ferromagnetic resonance was acoustically excited. Based on a theoretical model, we attribute the microscopic origin of this phenomenon to the resonant scattering involving ferromagnetic resonance excitations. The novel property may pave an avenue to further development of SAW devices for various purposes, including microwave communications and quantum engineering applications.

Abstract:We propose a novel concept of nonreciprocal devices in acoustics, illustrated by the design of an acoustic diode, or isolator. A boundary control strategy was previously shown to provide direction-dependent propagation properties in acoustic waveguides. In this paper, the boundary control is reinterpreted as a source term for the inhomogeneous wave equation, in a purely 1D model. Nonreciprocity is then obtained using a distributed source that replaces the non-standard boundary condition where the normal velocity at the boundary is a function of both pressure and its tangential derivative. Numerical simulations are carried out to validate the theoretical model, and the scattering matrix of the device is retrieved to investigate the nonreciprocal nature of the system. Results show that the proposed device can lead to an efficient, ultra-broadband, sub-wavelength, acoustic isolator. Finally, the effects of actual, finite-sized transducers on the performance of the acoustic isolator are discussed.

Abstract:Synthetic magnetism has been recently realized using spatiotemporal modulation patterns, producing non-reciprocal steering of charge-neutral particles such as photons and phonons. Here, we design and experimentally demonstrate a non-reciprocal acoustic system composed of three compact cavities interlinked with both dynamic and static couplings, in which phase-correlated modulations induce a synthetic magnetic flux that breaks time-reversal symmetry. Within the rotating wave approximation, the transport properties of the system are controlled to efficiently realize large non-reciprocal acoustic transport. By optimizing the coupling strengths and modulation phases, we achieve frequency-preserved unidirectional transport with 45-dB isolation ratio and 0.85 forward transmission. Our results open to the realization of acoustic non-reciprocal technologies with high efficiency and large isolation, and offer a route towards Floquet topological insulators for sound.

Abstract:Surface acoustic wave (SAW) can carry phononic angular momentum, showing great potential as an energy-efficient way to control magnetism. Still, out-of-plane phononic angular momentum in SAW and its interaction with magnetism remain elusive. Here, we studied the SAW-induced magnetoacoustic waves and spin pumping in Ni-based films on LiNbO3 with selected SAW propagation direction. The crystal inversion asymmetry induces circularly polarized phonons with large out-of-plane angular momenta so that up to 60% of the SAW power attenuates nonreciprocally controlled by the out-of-plane magnetization component. The SAW propagation direction dependence of the nonreciprocity verifies the crystal origin of the phononic angular momentum, and a chiral spin pumping demonstrates that the circular polarization can control the spin current generation efficiency. These results provide an additional degree of freedom for the acoustic control of magnetism and open an avenue for applying circularly polarized phonons.

Abstract:We predict that surface acoustic waves are generated preferentially in one direction in a heterostructure of a thin magnetic film on a non-magnetic substrate. The non-reciprocity arises from magneto-elastic coupling and magneto-rotation coupling, the former being dominant for YIG/GGG heterostructures. For YIG films thinner than about 100 nm, the surface acoustic wave amplitude is nearly unidirectional at certain angles of the in-plane equilibrium magnetisation. We compute the full magnetic field dependence of the effect for a selected device.

Abstract:With the advent of the 5G era, surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices with a larger bandwidth and better temperature stability are strongly required, meanwhile the dimensions of devices are continuously scaling down. In this work, a new layout of ZnO/SiO2/Al2O3 SAW devices with embedded electrodes was developed, and with the help of the finite element method (FEM), the propagation characteristics were simulated. Through adopting embedded electrodes, a large electromechanical coupling coefficient (K2) of 6.6% for the Rayleigh mode can be achieved (5 times larger than that of the conventional ZnO/Al2O3 structure), feasible for wideband SAW devices, and a low acoustic velocity (Vp) of 2960 m/s is exhibited simultaneously, which benefits the miniaturization of SAW devices. The dramatic enhancement of K2 is mainly attributed to the more efficient excitation of SAW in piezoelectric films. Furthermore, a SiO2 overlay is added on the top of the structure to gain an excellent zero temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF). Experimentally, we successfully fabricated SAW one-port resonators based on the proposed structure and good characteristics of high K2, low Vp, and small TCF as simulated were confirmed. Our results show that the proposed structure provides a viable route to design SAW devices with a large bandwidth, small size, and robust temperature compensation for practical use.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
