Abstract:Lack of nonreciprocity is one of the major drawbacks of solid-state acoustic devices, which has hindered the development of microwave-frequency acoustic isolators and circulators. Here we report giant nonreciprocal transmission of shear-horizontal surface acoustic waves (SH-SAWs) on a LiTaO3 substrate coated with a negative-positive magnetostrictive bilayer structure of Ni/Ti/FeCoSiB. Although the static magnetic moments of two layers are parallel, SH-SAWs can excite optical-mode spin waves much stronger than acoustic-mode ones at relatively low frequencies via magnetoelastic coupling. The measured magnitude nonreciprocity exceeds 40 dB (or 80 dB/mm) at 2.333 GHz. In addition, maximum nonreciprocal phase accumulation reaches 188° (376°/mm), which is desired for an effective SAW circulator. Our theoretical model and calculations provide an insight into the observed phenomena and demonstrate a pathway for further improvement of nonreciprocal acoustic devices.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses how to achieve significant non-reciprocal transmission of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) using positive-negative magnetostrictive heterostructures. In the study, the authors used a negative-positive magnetostrictive bilayer structure composed of Ni/Ti/FeCoSiB and found that SAWs can excite optical mode spin waves rather than acoustic mode spin waves at relatively low frequencies through magnetoelastic coupling when the static magnetic moment is parallel. This configuration greatly enhances the non-reciprocal transmission of SAWs. The experimental results show that at 2.333 GHz, the non-reciprocal magnitude exceeds 40 dB (or 80 dB/mm), and the non-reciprocal phase accumulation reaches 188° (376°/mm), which provides possibilities for effective SAW circulators. The authors established a theoretical model to explain the observed phenomena and proposed approaches to improve non-reciprocal acoustic devices. The paper also points out that compared with electromagnetic waves, sound waves have significantly shorter wavelengths, making SAW devices compact and high-quality factor, which is advantageous for RF signal processing. However, in previous studies, SAWs have large insertion losses due to the weakness of spin wave non-reciprocity and the magnetic damping effect. The negative-positive magnetostrictive structure proposed in this paper can achieve large non-reciprocity at lower frequencies without requiring precise thickness control of synthetic antiferromagnetic structures. In addition, the paper analyzes the influence of different magnetization angles on the non-reciprocity of spin waves and optimizes the structure by changing the layer thickness and reducing the Gilbert magnetic resistance of the magnetic layers to further improve non-reciprocity and reduce insertion loss. These findings provide new insights for the development of efficient and stable microwave SAW isolators and other non-reciprocal devices.
