Abstract:The paper computes the Witt-sheaf cohomology rings of partial flag varieties in type A in terms of the Pontryagin classes of the subquotient bundles. The proof is based on a Leray-Hirsch-type theorem for Witt-sheaf cohomology for the maximal rank cases, and a detailed study of cohomology ring presentations and annihilators of characteristic classes for the general case. The computations have consequences for the topology of real flag manifolds: we show that all torsion in the integral cohomology is 2-torsion, which was not known in full generality previously. This allows for example to compute the Poincaré polynomials of complete flag varieties for cohomology with twisted integer coefficients. The computations also allow to describe the Chow-Witt rings of flag varieties, and we sketch an enumerative application to counting flags satisfying multiple incidence conditions to given hypersurfaces.

Abstract:Witt rings for nondegenerate forms $\varphi$ of degree $d$ over a field of characteristic 0 or greater than $d$ were defined by Harrison and Pareigis. We revisit and discuss their definition as well as some special cases, classify the $H$-forms employed in their definition, and define Witt rings of diagonal forms of degree $d$. We also define two new Witt rings for nondegenerate forms $\varphi$ of degree $d$.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to prove some results on the existence of an integral extension domain of a complete local Noetherian domain in mixed characteristic $p>0$ having certain distinguished properties with respect to the Frobenius map. We prove the main results by constructing required extension domains via Witt vectors and the method of maximal étale extensions. It is worth remarking that the resulting algebras have deep connections with the homological conjectures and the rings in $p$-adic Hodge theory.

Abstract:We obtain exhaustive classification of inequivalent realizations of the Witt and Virasoro algebras by Lie vector fields of differential operators in the space $\mathbb{R}^3$. Using this classification we describe all inequivalent realizations of the direct sum of the Witt algebras in $\mathbb{R}^3$. These results enable constructing all possible (1+1)-dimensional classically integrable equations that admit infinite dimensional symmetry algebra isomorphic to the Witt or the direct sum of Witt algebras. In this way the new classically integrable nonlinear PDE in one spatial dimension has been obtained. In addition, we construct a number of new nonlinear (1+1)-dimensional PDEs admitting infinite symmetries.

Abstract:We give a universal property of the construction of the ring of $p$-typical Witt vectors of a commutative ring, endowed with Witt vectors Frobenius and Verschiebung, and generalize this construction to the derived setting. We define an $\infty$-category of $p$-typical derived $\delta$-Cartier rings and show that the derived ring of $p$-typical Witt vectors of a derived ring is naturally an object in this $\infty$-category. Moreover, we show that for any prime $p$, the formation of the derived ring of $p$-typical Witt vectors gives an equivalence between the $\infty$-category of all derived rings and the full subcategory of all derived $p$-typical $\delta$-Cartier rings consisting of $V$-complete objects.

Abstract:We give a direct construction of the ring spectrum of spherical Witt vectors of a perfect $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebra R as the completion of the spherical monoid algebra $\mathbb{S}[R]$ of the multiplicative monoid $(R,\cdot)$ at the ideal $I = \mathrm{fib}(\mathbb{S}[R] \to R)$. This generalizes a construction of Cuntz and Deninger. We also use this to give a description of the category of p-complete modules over the spherical Witt vectors and a universal property for spherical Witt vectors as an $\mathbb{E}_1$-ring.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an arbitrary infinite field. The cohomology group $H^2(SL(2,K), H_2\,SL(2,K))$ contains the class of the universal central extension. When studying representations of fundamental groups of surfaces in $SL(2,K)$ it is useful to have classes stable under deformations (Fenchel--Nielsen twists) of representations. We identify the maximal quotient of the universal class which is stable under twists as the Witt class of Nekovar. The Milnor--Wood inequality asserts that an $SL(2,{\bf R})$-bundle over a surface of genus $g$ admits a flat structure if and only if its Euler number is $\leq (g-1)$. We establish an analog of this inequality, and a saturation result for the Witt class. The result is sharp for the field of rationals, but not sharp in general.

Divided powers in the Witt ring of symmetric bilinear forms

Abstract:The Witt ring of symmetric bilinear forms over a field has divided power operations. On the other hand, it follows from Garibaldi-Merkurjev-Serre's work on cohomological invariants that all operations on the Witt ring are essentially linear combinations of exterior powers. We find the explicit formula for the divided powers as a linear combination of exterior powers. The coefficients involve the ``tangent numbers'', related to Bernoulli numbers. The divided powers on the Witt ring give another construction of the divided powers on Milnor K-theory modulo 2.

Abstract:The main scope of this short paper is to provide a modification of the axioms given by Messmer and Wood for the theory of separably closed fields of positive characteristic and finite imperfectness degree. The original axioms failed to meet natural expectations, and therefore a new axiomatization was given (i.e. Ziegler's one), but the new axioms do not follow the initial idea of Messmer and Wood. Therefore, we aim to give a correct axiomatization which is more similar to the original one and which, as the original axioms,involves only one Hasse-Schmidt derivation, this time based on the iterativity conditions corresponding to the Witt group.

Abstract:Our main goal in this paper is to prove results for Witt vectors in the almost category. To do so, we spend the first section developing almost ring theory, as detailed in Gabber and Ramero's book on Almost Ring Theory. We have tried to keep the exposition linear and digestable in order for the reader to grasp necessities and appreciate their usability. We finish with an application to almost purity, in particular offering a new proof for perfectoid rings with a rank one valuation.

Abstract:The purpose of this this paper is to generalize the functors arising from the theory of Witt vectors duto to Cartier. Given a polynomial $g(q)\in \mathbb Z[q]$, we construct a functor ${\overline {W}}^{g(q)}$ from the category of $\mathbb Z[q]$-algebras to that of commutative rings. When $q$ is specialized into an integer $m$, it produces a functor from the category of commutative rings with unity to that of commutative rings. In a similar way, we also construct several functors related to ${\overline { W}}^{g(q)}$. Functorial and structural properties such as induction, restriction, classification and unitalness will be investigated intensively.

Abstract:The Witt group of skew hermitian forms over a division algebra $D$ with symplectic involution is shown to be canonically isomorphic to the Witt group of symmetric bilinear forms over the Severi-Brauer variety of $D$ with values in a suitable line bundle. In the special case where $D$ is a quaternion algebra we extend previous work by Pfister and by Parimala on the Witt group of conics to set up two five-terms exact sequences relating the Witt groups of hermitian or skew-hermitian forms over $D$ with the Witt groups of the center, of the function field of the Severi-Brauer conic of $D$, and of the residue fields at each closed point of the conic.

Abstract:This paper is a direct generalization of Baker-Bowler theory to flag matroids, including its moduli interpretation as developed by Baker and the second author for matroids. More explicitly, we extend the notion of flag matroids to flag matroids over any tract, provide cryptomorphic descriptions in terms of basis axioms (Grassmann-Plücker functions), circuit/vector axioms and dual pairs, including additional characterizations in the case of perfect tracts. We establish duality of flag matroids and construct minors. Based on the theory of ordered blue schemes, we introduce flag matroid bundles and construct their moduli space, which leads to algebro-geometric descriptions of duality and minors. Taking rational points recovers flag varieties in several geometric contexts: over (topological) fields, in tropical geometry, and as a generalization of the MacPhersonian.
