Abstract:In this paper, we develop a structure theory for generalized spectral sequences, which are derived from chain complexes that are filtered over arbitrary partially ordered sets. Also, a more general construction method reminiscent of exact couples is studied, together with examples where they arise naturally. As for ordinary spectral sequences we will see differentials and group extensions, however the real power comes from the appearance of natural isomorphims between pages of differing indices. The constructions reveal finer invariants than ordinary spectral sequences, and they connect to other fields such as Fary functors and perverse sheaves. They are based on a natural index scheme, which allows us to obtain new results even in the standard case of Z-filtered chain complexes, e.g. a useful criterion for a product structure for Grothendieck's spectral sequences, and news paths to connect the first or second page to the limit. This turns out to yield the right framework for unifying several spectral sequences that one would usually apply one after another. Examples that we work out are successive Leray--Serre spectral sequences, the Adams--Novikov spectral sequence following the chromatic spectral sequence, successive Grothendieck spectral sequences, and successive Eilenberg--Moore spectral sequences.

Quillen's Fundamental Spectral Sequences Revisited

Abstract:Quillen's fundamental spectral sequences relate André-Quillen homology and cohomology to Tor and Ext functors. The five-term exact sequences arising from these spectral sequences are leveraged to characterize regular and complete intersection local rings. Despite their immense importance in the theory of André-Quillen homology and cohomology, these spectral sequences are not treated in the literature as they merit. A sketchy argument with gaps for a special case of the first spectral sequence appears in an unpublished manuscript of Quillen, while the second spectral sequence is only stated without proof in another paper of Quillen. A rigorous proof of the spectral sequences requires a delicate investigation of the subtle structures involved. The goal of this expository article is to present a comprehensive and detailed proof of Quillen's fundamental spectral sequences in a readable and well-structured manner.

Abstract:We consider Rumin's filtration on the de Rham complex of a Carnot group. Although Pansu pullback by a Sobolev map is filtration preserving, it need not be a chain mapping. Nonetheless, we show that Pansu pullback induces a mapping of the associated spectral sequences. This gives an alternate interpretation of the Pullback Theorem from our previous paper.

Abstract:Let X be a simplicial complex on vertex set V of size n. Let X(k) denote the set of all k-dimensional simplices of X, and deg_X(σ)=|{η∈ X(k+1):σ⊆η}| denote the degree of σ∈ X. A missing face in X is a subset σ of V such that σ∉ X but τ∈ X for any proper subset τ of σ. Let d denote the maximal dimension of a missing face of X, and μ_k(X) denote the k-th spectral gap of X, i.e., the smallest eigenvalue of the reduced k-dimensional Laplacian of X. In [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 169 (2020) 105127], Lew established a lower bound for μ_k(X): μ_k(X)≥ (d+1)(min_σ∈ X(k)deg_X(σ)+k+1)-dn≥ (d+1)(k+1)-dn, and further conjectured that if μ_k(X)=(d+1)(k+1)-dn for some k, then X≅ (Δ_d^(d-1))^*(n-k-1)*Δ_(d+1)(k+1)-dn-1. In this paper, we confirm Lew's conjecture.

Abstract:This paper is a compilation of well-known results about Zadoff-Chu sequences, including all proofs with a consistent mathematical notation, for easy reference. Moreover, for a Zadoff-Chu sequence $x_u[n]$ of prime length $N_{\text{ZC}}$ and root index $u$, a formula is derived that allows computing the first term (frequency zero) of its discrete Fourier transform, $X_u[0]$, with constant complexity independent of the sequence length, as opposed to accumulating all its $N_{\text{ZC}}$ terms. The formula stems from a famous result in analytic number theory and is an interesting complement to the fact that the discrete Fourier transform of a Zadoff-Chu sequence is itself a Zadoff-Chu sequence whose terms are scaled by $X_u[0]$. Finally, the paper concludes with a brief analysis of time-continuous signals derived from Zadoff-Chu sequences, especially those obtained by OFDM-modulating a Zadoff-Chu sequence.

Abstract:With the aim of understanding Morel's result on the $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy sheaves over a field, one extends the theory of unstable spectral sequences of Bousfield and Kan in the $\infty$-categorical setting. With this natural extension, parallel to the classical formalism of 'cohomology theory with supports', we introduce the notion of 'cohomotopy theory with supports'. We extend the Bloch-Ogus-Gabber theorem for Cohomology theory with supports to that of unstable setting, to obtain unstable Gersten (or Cousin) resolutions associated to the coniveau filtration, under suitable assumptions. We apply this theory to motivic homotopy, Nisnevich-local torsors, and Artin-Mazur étale homotopy type.

Abstract:We present a proof that the operator norm of the commutator of certain spectral projections associated with spin operators converges to $\frac 1 2$ in the semiclassical limit. The ranges of the projections are spanned by all eigenvectors corresponding to positive eigenvalues. The proof involves the theory of Hankel operators on the Hardy space. A discussion of several analogous results is also included, with an emphasis on the case of finite Heisenberg groups.

Abstract:Using Morse-Bott-Floer spectral sequences, we describe a filtration by ideals on quantum cohomology for symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action that extends to a pseudoholomorphic $\mathbb{C}^*$-action. These spaces include all Conical Symplectic Resolutions, in particular all Quiver Varieties. Our Morse-Bott-Floer spectral sequences give explicit descriptions of birth-death phenomena of the barcode of the persistence module associated to the $\mathbb{C}^*$-action, defined in our earlier paper. This paper contains the foundational work to rigorously construct a filtration on Floer complexes, announced in that earlier paper. We also include a substantial appendix on Morse-Bott-Floer theory, where a large part of the technical difficulties of the paper are dealt with. We compute a plethora of explicit examples, each highlighting various features, for Springer resolutions, ADE resolutions, and several Slodowy varieties of type A. We also consider certain Higgs moduli spaces, for which we compare our filtration with the well-known P=W filtration.

On multiplicative spectral sequences for nerves and the free loop spaces

Abstract:We construct a multiplicative spectral sequence converging to the cohomology algebra of the diagonal complex of a bisimplicial set with coefficients in a field. The construction provides a spectral sequence converging to the cohomology algebra of the classifying space of a topological category. By applying the machinery to a Borel construction, we determine explicitly the mod $p$ cohomology algebra of the free loop space of the real projective space for each odd prime $p$. This is highlighted as an important computational example of such a spectral sequence. Moreover, we try to represent generators in the singular de Rham cohomology algebra of the diffeological free loop space of a non-simply connected manifold $M$ with differential forms on the universal cover of $M$ via Chen's iterated integral map.

Abstract:We prove an abstract index formula about Sinnott's symbol between two different lattices. We also develop the theory of the universal distribution and predistribution in a double complex point of view. The theory of spectral sequence is used to interpret the index formula and to analyze the cohomology of the universal distribution. Combing these results, we successfully prove Sinnott's index formula about the Stickelberger ideal. In addition, the {1, -1}-cohomology groups of the universal distribution and the universal predistribution are obtained.
