Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys containing coherent L12 nano-precipitates at different temperatures, as well as the interactions between the dislocations and nano-precipitates within the nanotwins. The simulation results demonstrate that both the yield stress and flow stress in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates decrease as the temperature rises, because the higher temperatures lead to the generation of more defects during yielding and lower dislocation density during plastic deformation. Moreover, the coherent L12 phase exhibits excellent thermal stability, which enables the hinderance of dislocation motion at elevated temperatures via the wrapping and cutting mechanisms of dislocations. The synergistic effect of nanotwins and nano-precipitates results in more significant strengthening behavior in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys under high temperatures. In addition, the high-temperature mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates is sensitive to the size and volume fraction of the microstructures. These findings could be helpful for the design of nanotwins and nano-precipitates to improve the high-temperature mechanical properties of NiCo-based alloys.

Abstract:The conversion efficiency (zT) of thermoelectric (TE) materials has been enhanced over the last two decades, but their engineering applications are hindered by the poor mechanical properties, especially the low strength at working conditions. Here we used density functional theory (DFT) to show a strength enhancement in the TE semiconductor InSb arising from the twin boundaries (TBs). This strengthening effect leads to an 11% enhancement of the ideal shear strength in flawless crystalline InSb where this theoretical strength is considered as an upper bound on the attainable strength for a realistic material. DFT calculations reveal that the directional covalent bond rearrangements at the TB accommodating the structural mismatch lead to the anisotropic resistance against the deformation combined with the enhanced TB rigidity. This produces a strong stress response in the nanotwinned InSb. This work provides a fundamental insight for understanding the deformation mechanism of nanotwinned TE semiconductors, which is beneficial for developing reliable TE devices.

Abstract:Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) based thermoelectric (TE) materials have been commercialized successfully as solid-state power generators, but their low mechanical strength suggests that these materials may not be reliable for long-term use in TE devices. Here we use density functional theory to show that the ideal shear strength of Bi2Te3 can be significantly enhanced up to 215% by imposing nanoscale twins. We reveal that the origin of the low strength in single crystalline Bi2Te3 is the weak van derWaals interaction between the Te1 coupling two Te1-Bi-Te2-Bi-Te1 five-layer quint substructures. However, we demonstrate here a surprising result that forming twin boundaries between the Te1 atoms of adjacent quints greatly strengthens the interaction between them, leading to a tripling of the ideal shear strength in nanotwinned Bi2Te3 (0.6 GPa) compared to that in the single crystalline material (0.19 GPa). This grain boundary engineering strategy opens a new pathway for designing robust Bi2Te3 TE semiconductors for high-performance TE devices.

Abstract:An innovative concept of twin-enhanced thermoelectricity was proposed to fundamentally resolve the high electrical resistance while not degrading the phonon scattering of the thermoelectric nanoassemblies. Under this frame, a variety of highly oriented and twinned bismuth antimony telluride (BixSb2-xTe3) nanocrystals were successfully fabricated by a large-area pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) technique on insulated silicon substrates at various deposition temperatures. The significant presence of the nonbasal- and basal-plane twins across the hexagonal BiSbTe nanocrystals, which were experimentally and systematically observed for the first time, evidently contributes to the unusually high electrical conductivity of similar to 2700 S cm(-1) and the power factor of similar to 25 mu W cm(-1) K-2 as well as the relatively low thermal conductivity of similar to 1.1 W m(-1) K-1 found in these nanostructured films.

Abstract:The dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) in bismuth antimony telluride (BiSbTe) bulk alloys has remained around 1 for more than 50 years. We show that a peak ZT of 1.4 at 100°C can be achieved in a p-type nanocrystalline BiSbTe bulk alloy. These nanocrystalline bulk materials were made by hot pressing nanopowders that were ball-milled from crystalline ingots under inert conditions. Electrical transport measurements, coupled with microstructure studies and modeling, show that the ZT improvement is the result of low thermal conductivity caused by the increased phonon scattering by grain boundaries and defects. More importantly, ZT is about 1.2 at room temperature and 0.8 at 250°C, which makes these materials useful for cooling and power generation. Cooling devices that use these materials have produced high-temperature differences of 86°, 106°, and 119°C with hot-side temperatures set at 50°, 100°, and 150°C, respectively. This discovery sets the stage for use of a new nanocomposite approach in developing high-performance low-cost bulk thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Bismuth antimony telluride (BiSbTe) composites are the most studied thermoelectric materials around room temperature. However, the extension of commercial applications is mostly restricted by its inferior conversion efficiency and mechanical stability. In this work, we report that the introduction of nano-sized ceramic titanium carbide (nano-TiC) can achieve a high dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) value up to 1.3 at 400 K and an increment in hardness over 37.93% at room temperature in Bi0.3Sb1.7Te3 (BST) composites. On one hand, nano-TiC creates BST/TiC interfaces so that total thermal conductivity is reduced. Meanwhile, the Seebeck coefficient increases due to the scattering of carriers through the TiC-driven energy filtering effect. On the other hand, the hardness increases substantially with the addition of TiC resulted from the pinning effect induced hardening by grain boundaries and secondary phases. The results indicate that nano-TiC dispersion into BST matrix is effective for the enhancement in both thermoelectric performance and mechanical properties, which is favorable to practical applications. Moreover, the method of introducing nano-sized ceramic materials can also be extended to other thermoelectric systems.

Abstract:Decoupling of interdependent thermoelectric parameters was considered as a crucial strategy to enhance the thermoelectric performance of bulk materials. Here multi-scale microstructural effects have been introduced by a simple hot deformation process to obtain high-performance n-type bismuth telluride based alloys. Highly preferred orientation enables a significant improvement in in-plane electrical conductivity. The donor-like effect (an interaction of antisite defects and vacancies), which can be adjusted by varying hot deformation temperature, was also considered responsible for the remarkable enhancement in power factor. Besides, the in-plane lattice thermal conductivity was greatly reduced by in situ nanostructures and high-density lattice defects generated during the hot deformation process. The present study experimentally demonstrates a successful combination of microscale texture enhancement, atomic scale lattice defects and donor-like effect and recrystallization induced nanostructures as a new approach to improve thermoelectric properties. These effects led to a maximum ZT of 0.95 for the Bi2Te2Se1 sample hot deformed at 823 K, about 80% improvement over that without hot deformation.

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials have potential applications in energy harvesting and electronic cooling devices, and bismuth antimony telluride (BiSbTe) alloys are the state-of-the-art thermoelectric materials that have been widely used for several decades. It is demonstrated that mixing SiC nanoparticles into the BiSbTe matrix effectively enhances its thermoelectric properties; a high dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) value of up to 1.33 at 373 K is obtained in Bi0.3Sb1.7Te3 incorporated with only 0.4 vol% SiC nanoparticles. SiC nanoinclusions possessing coherent interfaces with the Bi0.3Sb1.7Te3 matrix can increase the Seebeck coefficient while increasing the electrical conductivity, in addition to its effect of reducing lattice thermal conductivity by enhancing phonon scattering. Nano-SiC dispersion further endows the BiSbTe alloys with better mechanical properties, which are favorable for practical applications and device fabrication.

Abstract:The zone-melted Bi2Te3 based alloys with excellent near room temperature figure-of-merit have dominated the field of commercial thermoelectric materials for many years. However, the poor mechanical strength restricts their application on the hot emerging miniature TE devices. Herein, we adjust the Bi/Sb ratio of the nanotwins strengthened Te-deficient Bi0.4Sb1.6Te2.98 alloy, obtaining a mechanically robust p-type Bi2Te3 based alloy with a high peak zT of 1.33 at 150 °C and an eminent zTave of 1.16 over 30 to 250 °C. Then, taking this alloy and Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 as the p-type and n-type legs respectively, a module possessing high conversion efficiency of ∼4.8% at a temperature difference of 270 °C is fabricated, which paves an effective way to develop robust miniature (Bi, Sb)2Te3-based TE devices.
High Thermoelectric Power Factor in Cu–Ni Alloy Originate from Potential Barrier Scattering of Twin Boundaries

Abstract:Constantan alloy (Cu–Ni) has been known for a long time in thermocouples due to its thermal power property. In this study, we show an enhancement in thermoelectric performance of Cu56Ni42Mn2 alloy by introducing nanoscale twins into its microstructure. Comparing to arc-melted ingot (without nanoscale twins), the ball milled and hot pressed (BM–HP) samples with twinning showed a higher Seebeck coefficient of ~−72.5μVK−1 (an increase of ~12% at 873K), a larger power factor of ~102μWcm−1K−2 (an increase of ~21% at 873K), and hence a higher ZT of ~0.19 (an increase of ~34% at 873K). A high output power density of ~53.4Wcm−2 is calculated from the high power factor even though the conversion efficiency is lower than 3% due to the low ZT. TEM characterization shows there is a large quantity of nanoscale twins with spacing of 50–200nm. It is very likely that low-energy carriers are selectively scattered by the twin boundaries (i.e., potential barrier scattering) thus lead to enhanced Seebeck coefficient. The improved thermoelectric performance of nano-twinned Cu–Ni alloy suggests constantan could be promising in thermoelectric power generation where the power output density is more important than the conversion efficiency.

Abstract:Thermoelectric effects enable direct conversion between thermal and electrical energy and provide an alternative route for power generation and refrigeration. Over the past ten years, the exploration of high-performance thermoelectric materials has attracted great attention from both an academic research perspective and with a view to industrial applications. This review summarizes the progress that has been made in recent years in developing thermoelectric materials with a high dimensionless figure of merits (ZT) and the related fabrication processes for producing nanostuctured materials. The challenge to develop thermoelectric materials with superior performance is to tailor the interconnected thermoelectric physical parameters — electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity — for a crystalline system. Nanostructures provide a chance to disconnect the linkage between thermal and electrical transport by introducing some new scattering mechanisms. Recent improvements in thermoelectric efficiency appear to be dominated by efforts to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity through nanostructural design. The materials focused in this review include Bi–Te alloys, skutterudite compounds, Ag–Pb–Sb–Te quaternary systems, half-Heusler compounds and some high-ZT oxides. Possible future strategies for developing thermoelectric materials are also discussed.
Enhancing thermoelectric performance of n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 through the incorporation of MnSb2Se4 nanoinclusions

Abstract:Bi2Te3-based alloys are the state of art thermoelectric materials for near-room temperature applications. However, the figure of merit, ZT, of n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 (BTS) is not large enough to its wide applications, and previous studies seldom involve incorporation of Mn-based alloys in BTS-based composites. Here, we show that through dispersion of transition-metal selenide MnSb2Se4 (MSS) into BTS can simultaneously increase the power factor (PF) and reduce lattice thermal conductivity (κ L ) greatly. Experimental evidences show that increased PF comes from enhanced thermopower due to energy filtering effect; while the reduced κ L originates mainly from intensified phonon scattering by the MSS nanoinclusion and dislocations. As a result, a large ZT max = 1.23 (at 345 K) and an average ZT ave ∼ 1.15 (300 K-473 K) are achieved for BTS/0.50 wt% MSS sample, which is respectively ∼ 48% and ∼ 42% larger than those of pristine BTS. In addition, this sample shows better mechanical properties with its Vickers hardness being increased by 17%. Present results demonstrate that incorporation of transition-metal selenides, such as MSS, is a promising way to improving thermoelectric performance as well as mechanical properties of BTS.

Abstract:The rational design and fabrication of nanostructures has become a fashionable strategy for pursing high thermoelectric performance in solid-state materials. Here we report nanostructured Te-Sb2Te3 composites with significantly enhanced thermoelectric performance through a scalable bottom-up method followed by a rapid sintering process. The power factor along with the carrier concentration could be significantly enhanced by increasing the number of point defects of Sb'(Te). Meanwhile, a great number of boundaries and hetero-interfaces between the Te and Sb2Te3 nanoparticles could play an important role in blocking phonons, resulting in the evident suppression of lattice thermal conductivity. Ultimately, a highest zT value close to 1.0 could be achieved at 623 K in samples with components of 2.6 mol% Sb2Te3 and 97.4 mol% Te. Such a peak zT value is comparable to that of doped Te materials synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction process. This work reveals that high thermoelectric performance could be realized in an intentionally designed nanocomposite by synergistically improving the power factor and suppressing the lattice thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Microstructure manipulation plays an important role in enhancing physical and mechanical properties of materials. Here a high figure of merit zT of 1.2 at 357 K for n‐type bismuth‐telluride‐based thermoelectric (TE) materials through directly hot deforming the commercial zone melted (ZM) ingots is reported. The high TE performance is attributed to a synergistic combination of reduced lattice thermal conductivity and maintained high power factor. The lattice thermal conductivity is substantially decreased by broad wavelength phonon scattering via tuning multiscale microstructures, which includes microscale grain size reduction and texture loss, nanoscale distorted regions, and atomic scale lattice distotions and point defects. The high power factor of ZM ingots is maintained by the offset between weak donor‐like effect and texture loss during the hot deformation. The resulted high zT highlights the role of multiscale microstructures in improving Bi2Te3‐based materials and demonstrates the effective strategy in enhancing TE properties.
