Abstract:Raw materials are fundamental to the economy, and hence to growth and jobs, and they are essential for maintaining and improving our quality of life. Securing reliable, sustainable and economic access to certain ‘critical’ raw materials is of growing concern around the globe. But it is as well a priority to acquire detailed information about the distribution of PTE and POP both at regional and local scales for environmental issues. The latter are of fundamental importance for environmental risk assessment and analysis that have a crucial role in the evaluation of human health risk, especially in mining and intensive urbanized areas. In addition, geochemical knowledge of the territory and mostly of top soils, where the main agricultural products grow, to become the foods for citizens, may be useful for land-use planning. Geochemical exploration methods are widely used to manage, visualize, analyse and interpret data for further identifying geochemical anomalies, for both the discovery of new ore bodies and for environmental purposes.

Abstract:Exploration success relies heavily on the data obtained, but, significantly on the type of analytical methods deployed and the interpretation reached. A poorly analyzed data may obscure the true reflectivity of the data, and thus, compromised the decision made. A combined data processing approach of descriptive statistics, enrichment-depletion data normalization, geospatial elemental distribution, and stacked overlayed comparison of elements have been used in this study. The prime purpose was to demonstrate potential elemental anomalies, and predict areas of higher degree of confidence for subsequent exploration and mineral resource evaluation. One-hundred and sixty-six stream sediment samples from the Dodoma Region of the Tanzania Craton have been examined; to reveal potential elements or mineral commodity that warrant further exploration. Forty-three elements of target were examined, as this craton is globally known for its rich earth mineral commodity. Our result indicates an enrichment of transition metals (TMs) (Cu, Ni, Co, Cr, Mn and Zn), High Field Strength Elements (Y, Th, U, Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta and Pb), Large Ion Lithophile Elements (Ba and Rb) and Rare-Earth Elements (La and Ce), Platinum Group Element (Pd and Pt) and other metals (Au, As, Bi, W, Mo and Li). Obtained results point to a likely poly-metallic sources and processes; as the underlain geology is marked largely by pegmatite and migmatites, and moderate proportion of fine clastic sedimentary rocks, and minor volcanic rocks mostly to the northern domain. Theoretically, the Large Ion Lithophile Elements (LILEs), Rare-Earth Elements (REEs) and Platinum Group Elements (PGEs) are associated with felsic rocks or variable stages of plutonic granitization. Although, the TMs are often associated with mafic-ultramafic rocks, the linkage of such metals with organic-rich shales been reported elsewhere. These rocks may equally contribute to the occurrence of other metals as stated in this paper. Its intriguing to note a strong positive correlation of Li with TMs, possibility of Li control by mafic minerals in pegmatite bodies. This work proposes a polymetallic enrichment controlled by the area geology. To suggest an alluvial mining potential of the above elements in the area, resource evaluation is a requirement. The geospatial maps reveal areas worth focusing for subsequent exploration. The adopted geostatistical methods and other approach utilized in this research are effective, indicative of handling bulk exploration data for decision and subsequent exploration.
Leveraging Domain Expertise in Machine Learning for Critical Metal Prospecting in the Oslo Rift: A Case Study for Fe-Ti-P-Rare Earth Element Mineralization

Abstract:Global demand for critical raw materials, including phosphorus (P) and rare earth elements (REEs), is on the rise. The south part of Norway, with a particular focus on the Southern Oslo Rift region, is a promising reservoir of Fe-Ti-P-REE resources associated with magmatic systems. Confronting challenges in mineral exploration within these systems, notably the absence of alteration haloes and distal footprints, we have explored alternative methodologies. In this study, we combine machine learning with geological expertise, aiming to identify prospective areas for critical metal prospecting. Our workflow involves processing over 400 rock samples to create training datasets for mineralization and non-mineralization, employing an intuitive sampling strategy to overcome an imbalanced sample ratio. Additionally, we convert airborne magnetic, radiometric, and topographic maps into machine learning-friendly features, with a keen focus on incorporating domain knowledge into these data preparations. Within a binary classification framework, we evaluate two commonly used classifiers: a random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM). Our analysis shows that the RF model outperforms the SVM model. The RF model generates a predictive map, identifying approximately 0.3% of the study area as promising for mineralization. These findings align with legacy data and field visits, supporting the map's potential to guide future surveys.

Metallogeny and Mineral Exploration – Some Personal Reminiscences

Abstract:The following personalised narrative aims to document the highlights of my involvement in some of the ground breaking developments in Economic Geology and their direct application to mineral exploration and discovery over the past half century. The story begins with my introduction to geology at secondary school and university, followed by doctoral research based on fieldwork in the Andes of South America. Then, as an employee of the Chilean Geological Survey, I got my introduction to porphyry copper deposits before returning to the UK to take up a post-doctoral research fellowship. This formative period concluded with my starting out as an independent geological consultant to the global exploration and mining industry. These early years happened to coincide with the plate tectonics revolution and its radical implications for metallogeny. I realised that porphyry copper and related deposits are integral parts of volcano-plutonic arcs generated during subduction of oceanic lithosphere, and volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in ophiolite complexes must have formed at oceanic spreading centres. At approximately the same time, application of K-Ar dating to copper deposits led to definition of metallogenic belts and corresponding epochs in the Andes, and then established the timing of their economically important supergene oxidation and enrichment. Subsequently, using more modern and precise U-Pb zircon and Re-Os molybdenite methods, collaborative attempts were made to determine porphyry copper deposit lifespans and ages of various copper belts, deposits and prospects around the world, including the Zambian Copperbelt. The focus on porphyry copper deposits led first to an appreciation of the linkage between them and subaerial volcanism and the importance of potassic alteration as a major host of hypogene copper mineralisation, and then to geological characterisation of the increasing number of gold-rich examples. Appreciation of the importance of hydrothermal breccias in porphyry copper deposits, including recognition of mineralised diatremes, resulted in a classification scheme for breccias that may be extended to related deposit types. Extensive fieldwork showed that zones of advanced argillic alteration, termed lithocaps, constitute the shallow parts of porphyry copper systems. The role of tectonic uplift in both porphyry copper formation and subsequent supergene modification was also charted. The end result of this body of work was a porphyry copper model that can be used as a basic exploration guide. In response to a marked increase in the world gold price in the late 1970s, more effort was devoted to gold concentrations in magmatic arc terranes, commencing with epithermal gold deposits in the shallow lithocaps of porphyry copper systems. This led to an input to classification schemes for epithermal precious metal deposits and, eventually, to assignment of the three main epithermal types to specific tectono-magmatic settings. After years of speculation, porphyry gold deposits were recognised for the first time in northern Chile, followed by definition of a new gold deposit class in association with relatively reduced granitic intrusions. A magmatic-hydrothermal origin for Carlin-type gold deposits was steadfastly supported over many years, notwithstanding its unpopularity until relatively recently, culminating in a proposal for modern analogues. For decades, metallogenic provinces and corresponding epochs have been widely appreciated, but debate concerning their origin(s) persists. The nature of accompanying magmatism could well provide an adequate explanation for at least some provinces (e.g., tin, molybdenum and possibly silver), but precursor metal enrichment in the lowermost crust and/or subcontinental lithospheric mantle may well be required in the case of gold and copper provinces. The story concludes with brief commentary on mineral exploration, which has been my lifelong (pre)occupation. Requirements for success in mineral exploration are discussed, based primarily on familiarity with the circum-Pacific region, followed by analysis of the types of companies and individuals involved and the burgeoning challenges to the exploration process, which, if not remedied, will have dire consequences for future metal production and global plans for the energy transition. My involvement as a lone practitioner in both mineral exploration and metallogenic research probably says something about my independent character traits, but nonetheless has been largely unstructured and certainly unplanned. I have no hesitation in recommending a similar career path for any recent graduate who relishes adventure and is prepared to endure significant work-life imbalance.

Isotope spatiotemporal analysis and prospecting indication based on GIS in Tibet

Abstract:Tibet has received much attention as a pivotal area to explore the genesis of ore deposits. So far, a large number of researchers have conducted a lot of discussions on the geological conditions, genesis, distribution and scale of ore deposits in Tibet, and accumulated a plenty of isotopic test data. Isotopic data can reveal the geological changes of an area and analyze the metallogenic regularity. In this paper, combined with GIS (Geographic Information System) spatiotemporal analysis technology, Hf and Nd isotopic data mapping analysis has been carried out in Tibet. The mapping shows high zircons εHf(t) value and high whole rock εNd(t) value and low TDMc value on both sides of the Eastern Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone and the Western Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone. It indicates that the terranes in these two areas are relatively young and have typical characteristics of Cu and Au mineralization, which are favorable areas for the prospecting of Cu and Au. Combined with the geological fault characteristics of Tibet Plateau, the influence of terrane boundary on the deposit and the relevant characteristics of geochemical elements, three favorable targets for Cu and Au prospecting in Tibet Plateau are delineated by GIS analysis. The results show that the characteristics of isotopic data in Tibet Plateau are quite different in disparate terranes, and the isotopic analysis can quickly delineate the strategic prospecting targets. Therefore, using GIS technology for isotope analysis and metallogenic prediction provides important guiding significance for scientific prospecting.
