Abstract:The western region of Mongolia is characterized by an arid climate and a fragile ecological environment. It is a sensitive zone in response to global climate change and one of the major sources of dust globally. This region is home to numerous lakes, and their dynamic changes not only reflect global climate variations but also have implications for the global ecological environment quality. In this study, Landsat images were used as the data source, and Google Earth Engine (GEE) was employed to extract lakes with an area larger than 1 km2 from 1992 to 2021. The spatiotemporal characteristics of lake water area (LWA) changes were analyzed, and a structural equation model was applied to attribute the lake changes. The results indicate an overall trend of increasing lake area followed by a decrease in the study area. Specifically, lakes in the provinces of Khovd and Gobi-Altai exhibited a decreasing trend followed by an increasing trend, while lakes in the provinces of Uvs and Zavkhan showed an increasing trend followed by a decreasing trend. Three typical types of lakes, namely, alpine lakes, throughflow lakes, and terminal lakes, all exhibited a trend of increasing area followed by a decrease. The analysis of driving forces behind lake area changes reveals that climate change and human activities primarily exert indirect influences on the lake area changes in each province. Specifically, climate change and human activities lead to changes in soil moisture, which have a significant explanatory power for lake area changes. Regarding the typical types of lakes, climate change serves as the primary driving force for alpine lakes, while human activities are the main driving forces for throughflow lakes and terminal lakes.

Abstract:Due to the lack of outlets, inflowing pollutants are often deposited in an endorheic lake, posing potential pressure on the environment. With climate change, extreme weather is expected to be more frequent and will contribute to the release of carbon and nutrients buried in the lakebeds. However, the distribution of sedimentary organic carbon and nutrients and the mechanisms that control the distribution are not fully understood, despite their significance to environmental development in endorheic lakes being widely recognized. In this study, the mechanisms controlling the sedimentary organic carbon and nutrient distributions in endorheic lakes were examined based on the analysis of an endorheic lake in the semiarid area of the Mongolian Plateau. The field survey results indicate that the concentrations of sedimentary organic carbon (TOC) and nutrients (NH3-N and TP) on the lakebed have significant correlations and present spatial heterogeneities. To further study the distribution mechanisms, numerical models were established to calculate the age of the water discharged from the rivers around the lake, and satellite remote sensing data were applied to examine the external source of organic carbon and nutrients and the factors influencing their movements to the lake. Based on the distribution of the water age, the water flow and mass transport trends in Lake Hulun were determined, and the time scales of the environmental processes were compared with those of water circulation. Further analysis indicates that the water circulation in the lake favors the accumulation of sedimentary organic carbon and nutrients in the northwestern part of the lake, and the organic carbon produced in the lake is transported to this region within an ice-free period. Satellite remote sensing data indicate that the region on the northwest bank of the lake experiences a larger terrestrial slope and better vegetation coverage than that on the southeast bank, which corresponds to a higher concentration of sedimentary organic carbon and nutrients in the northwest of the lake. This suggests that the sediment quality is closely related to the environment around the endorheic lake, and the larger slope and better vegetation coverage are significant factors for the high concentration of sedimentary organic carbon and nutrients on the lakebed under the conditions of scarce precipitation and low temperature. This study provides a theoretical basis and direction for further protection and management of the ecological environment of endorheic lakes.
The glacial–terrestrial–fluvial pathway: A multiparametrical analysis of spatiotemporal dissolved organic matter variation in three catchments of Lake Nam Co, Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is a sensitive alpine environment of global importance, being Asia's water tower, featuring vast ice masses and comprising the world's largest alpine grasslands. Intensified land-use and pronounced global climate change have put pressure on the environment of the TP. We studied the tempo-spatial variability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to better understand the fluxes of nutrients and energy from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems in the TP. We used a multiparametrical approach, based on inorganic water chemistry, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics (chromophoric DOM, fluorescence DOM and δ13C of DOM) in stream samples of three catchments of the Nam Co watershed and the lake itself. Satellite based plant cover estimates were used to link biogeochemical data to the structure and degradation of vegetation zones in the catchments. Catchment streams showed site-specific DOM signatures inherited from glaciers, wetlands, groundwater, and Kobresia pygmaea pastures. By comparing stream and lake samples, we found DOM processing and unification by loss of chromophoric DOM signatures and a change towards an autochthonous source of lake DOM. DOM diversity was largest in the headwaters of the catchments and heavily modified in terminal aquatic systems. Seasonality was characterized by a minor influence of freshet and by a very strong impact of the Indian summer monsoon on DOM composition, with more microbial DOM sources. The DOM of Lake Nam Co differed chemically from stream water samples, indicating the lake to be a quasi-marine environment in regards to the degree of chemical modification and sources of DOM. DOM proved to be a powerful marker to elucidate consequences of land use and climatic change on biogeochemical processes in High Asian alpine ecosystems.

Abstract:Geomorphological (landform) aspects have long been known to control groundwater conditions in an area. Thus, combining the hydrogeological and geomorphological aspects (lithology, genesis, and morphology) becomes a prospective approach for understanding and delineating the hydrogeochemical processes in an area. The idea is then applied in Kulonprogo, Java, Indonesia, that consists of several landforms with minimum anthropogenic influence, in order to identify and quantify the hydrogeochemical processes that are responsible for hydrogeochemical facies changes in each landform. The groundwater facies based on Kurlov classification in each landform are strongly influenced by the water–rock interaction process as it presented in the Gibbs curve. The magnitude of saturation indices and mass transfer is also diverse that caused a distinction of hydrogeochemical facies and processes in each landform. For instance, the evolution of groundwater in the denudational hill to the fluviomarine plain occurs from Ca–HCO3 to Na + K–Ca–HCO3. The analysis of Durov diagram and inverse modeling—using PHREEQ—reveals that the hydrogeochemical processes that occur in most of the landform are ion exchange, weathering or dissolution, and precipitation. Further, oxidation–reduction and mixing only occur in few landforms. The further investigation from mass balance calculation that constructs from inverse modeling reveals some interesting findings and hypotheses, such as the construction of gypsum probably found in the deeper layer on swale as a result of pyrite dissolution of 1.074 × 10−3 mmol, and it is responsible in escalating Ca2+ and SO42−. Another finding is that although the calcite mineral mostly related to the past-marine environment, such as in the east denudational hill, the calcite in the west part is formed as a breakdown of 3.225 × 10−3 mmol anorthite.

Abstract:Climate, topography, and rock conditions in Indonesia are relatively diverse, both physical and chemical, these conditions can cause adverse consequences such as floods, landslides, forest fires, and droughts. The Information from Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation on Monday, July 13, 2020, flash floods and flow of debris due to landslides have occurred in Masamba and Baebunta, North Luwu, South Sulawesi Province. The purpose of this paper is to map the distribution of landslide susceptibility area using remote sensing and GIS data. The Method used to analyze the landslide susceptibility estimation model refers to the Indonesian Center for Agricultural Land Resources Research and Development (ICALRD). The parameters used in this model are rainfall, soil type, rock type, slope, land use, and land movement. The ICALRD Landslide Susceptibility Estimation Model in study area shows that there are three classes of landslide susceptibility, such as low, medium, and high susceptibilities. There are six subdistricts which are in medium to high landslide susceptibility, and the others are low to medium landslide susceptibility. The locations of landslides and flash floods that occurred in Masamba and Baebunta indicate areas with medium to high landslide susceptibility.

Abstract:Lakes are widely distributed on the Mongolian Plateau and, as critical water sources, have sustained Mongolian pastures for hundreds of years. However, the plateau has experienced significant lake shrinkage and grassland degradation during the past several decades. To quantify the changes in all of the lakes on the plateau and the associated driving factors, we performed a satel-lite-based survey using multitemporal Landsat images from the 1970s to 2000s, combined with ground-based censuses. Our results document a rapid loss of lakes on the plateau in the past decades: the number of lakes with a water surface area > 1 km(2) decreased from 785 in the late 1980s to 577 in 2010, with a greater rate of decrease (34.0%) in Inner Mongolia of China than in Mongolia (17.6%). This decrease has been particularly pronounced since the late 1990s in Inner Mongolia and the number of lakes > 10 km2 has declined by 30.0%. The statistical analyses suggested that in Mongolia precipitation was the dominant driver for the lake changes, and in Inner Mongolia coal mining was most important in its grassland area and irrigation was the leading factor in its cultivated area. The deterioration of lakes is expected to continue in the following decades not only because of changing climate but also increasing exploitation of underground mineral and ground-water resources on the plateau. To protect grasslands and the indigenous nomads, effective action is urgently required to save these valuable lakes from further deterioration.

Abstract:Ultramafic complex in Sulawesi have many potential from mining to environmental aspects. The process of weathering and tectonic is a key factor in understanding how to utilize these potential. Tectonic geomorphology by using morphometric indices and field observation has proven to be a beneficial method in distinguishing the topography and morphogenetic development of a region due to the complex interaction between erosional processes and tectonic movements. IAT measurement of 71 sub-basins shows that tectonic activity in the research area are divided into 4 classes with values ranging from 1,5 – 2,6. Field observation shows that morphologically the research area are faulted hills consist of peridotite, dunite and pyroxenite with various degree of weathering. The effect of weathering also reveal on the shape of sub-basins and drainage density in the research area. Tectonic activity present in the form of intensive joint on some parts, with no clear correlation with IAT Class. keyword: tectonic geomorphology, carbon capture storage, ultramafic, east Sulawesi ophiolite, morphometric indices

Abstract:Indonesia has many environmental problems, especially those related to mining. It becomes essential to provide environmental education to the younger generation. However, the environmental education curriculum has not been explicitly found in the body of formal education in Indonesia. The study area is in Gunungkidul Regency, Indonesia where the limestone mining industry has expanded in almost all areas. The purpose of this study is to assess the environmental impacts of limestone mining activities and align the possible integration of environmental education in the study area. To gather data about the environmental impacts of limestone mining activities, a desktop study, field investigation, and interviews with local communities were conducted. Analysis of the Indonesian curriculum and interviews with elementary school teachers were conducted to align the possible integration of environmental education. The environmental impacts of limestone mining activities in the study area include air pollution, water contamination, drought, soil erosion, and road damage. We provide some suggestions for learning materials including an Introduction to environmentally friendly mining activities (Science subjects, grade 4, thematic 3), an Introduction to air pollution impacts in the mining area on human breathing (Science subjects, grade 5, thematic 2), and Introduction about mining activities impacts on the air, water, and soil (Science subjects, grade 5, thematic 8). It is recommended that teachers not only teach theory but also practice and environmental observation.

Abstract:Karst of Batumilmil comprises many unique geomorphological features such as caves, rivers, and mountainous ranges. Situated at the outskirt of the Biosphere Reserves of Leuser National Park, this area is wide open for geotourism development. This paper aims to study the potencies from Karst of Batumilmil to be developed into geotourism. Using data obtained from field surveys and visualized by Geographic Information System, we can find and design the recreational resources and formulate the development strategies toward them. Our study finds six caves as the main geotourism sites for activities like cave exploration and combined with the jungle tracking and river tubing as the secondary or supporting tourism attraction. Each cave has its characteristics that determine the geotourism activities and the carrying capacity. We also discover that each cave provides high scientific values, showing how the geological process of uplifting to form three cave levels. We conclude that Karst of Batumilmil has huge potential to be developed as geotourism destination with the strategy for this development consists of satisfying sustainability, serving educational purposes, and also balancing environmental, physical, and mental health.

Abstract:Lake Towuti is a tectonic basin, surrounded by ultramafic rocks. Lateritic soils form through weathering and deliver abundant iron (oxy)hydroxides but very little sulfate to the lake and its sediment. To characterize the sediment biogeochemistry, we collected cores at three sites with increasing water depth and decreasing bottom water oxygen concentrations. Microbial cell densities were highest at the shallow site-a feature we attribute to the availability of labile organic matter (OM) and the higher abundance of electron acceptors due to oxic bottom water conditions. At the two other sites, OM degradation and reduction processes below the oxycline led to partial electron acceptor depletion. Genetic information preserved in the sediment as extracellular DNA (eDNA) provided information on aerobic and anaerobic heterotrophs related to Nitrospirae, Chloroflexi, and Thermoplasmatales. These taxa apparently played a significant role in the degradation of sinking OM. However, eDNA concentrations rapidly decreased with core depth. Despite very low sulfate concentrations, sulfate-reducing bacteria were present and viable in sediments at all three sites, as confirmed by measurement of potential sulfate reduction rates. Microbial community fingerprinting supported the presence of taxa related to Deltaproteobacteria and Firmicutes with demonstrated capacity for iron and sulfate reduction. Concomitantly, sequences of Ruminococcaceae, Clostridiales, and Methanomicrobiales indicated potential for fermentative hydrogen and methane production. Such first insights into ferruginous sediments showed that microbial populations perform successive metabolisms related to sulfur, iron, and methane. In theory, iron reduction could reoxidize reduced sulfur compounds and desorb OM from iron minerals to allow remineralization to methane. Overall, we found that biogeochemical processes in the sediments can be linked to redox differences in the bottom waters of the three sites, like oxidant concentrations and the supply of labile OM. At the scale of the lacustrine record, our geomicrobiological study should provide a means to link the extant subsurface biosphere to past environments.
